Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

[Sanctuary] The Spirit of a Shield

24th of Spring, 515 AV
Mid-Morning

Touching a hand to the smooth stone of the Sanctuary’s walls, Aoren considered the work before him. Without hesitation he drew upon his djed pushing it outward to flow over the surface of the stone. It came easier to him than it had in the past. He knew the foundations of what he wanted to achieve which made the task simpler. As with the beginnings of his project he pushed enough djed outward to slide all the way up to the top most edge of the wall. When he had finished giving of himself to weave the rudimentary layer of protection over the wall he stepped back examining the Shield. The basic weave was relatively sound. It would serve its purpose well enough. The Drykas touched both hands to the djed willing the clumps of power to even themselves out. He spread the Shield over the wall as even as he could.

Block fire.

Absorb djed.

The two tasks that he had instilled in all of the Shields that he’d created. That was the extent of what he could presently do although he desired to do more. He’d attempted to piece in other tasks with his previous Shields but found that in doing his initial ones were overridden or the idea simply didn’t stick. Aoren knew that he had come a long ways in his abilities with Shielding but there was more yet that he needed to accomplish.

Nevertheless he was not disheartened. The work he did was merely laying the foundation for work that would follow over time. As with his other Shields he stepped over to the border between the Shield that he’d already erected and his newly created one. Reaching across the gap he added djed to the weave of both Shields bringing the two together. It was slow work that was taking many days to accomplish but the process of building the overall Shield in sections, then weaving them together to form a single seamless one was a safer route.

He examined the strength of his work closely before giving a satisfactory nod. While that particular facet of the Shield was complete there were other things he wanted to experiment with. He would have to do it on a smaller scale however. Making his way back through the Sanctuary he passed through the courtyards and down to the Within. Once there he made his way to his room going to where he kept his armor neatly awaiting the chance to be worn. Aoren ran a hand over the night leather. The black material was polished and reasonably well maintained. He took hold of the bracers picking them up. He had worn them several times since purchasing them back in the Fall. They’d served him well. There was a measure of protection that he could offer them that others couldn’t however. Grabbing one of the iron daggers that rested nearby, Aoren took a seat on the floor of his room.

[Sanctuary] The Spirit of a Shield

Drawing upon the powers of auristics he peered into the depths of the iron dagger. The structure of the iron was made clearer to him. He saw within the blade the details of iron’s djed. At least he saw the details of refined iron. Touching the bracers with his vision he studied the makeup of the leather as well comparing the two of them side by side. Through auristics he could feel the cold sharpness of the dagger. He was given insight into how the blade was weighted given the miniscule fluctuations in its form. The surface was smooth with trace smells of wet earth, like rain touched soil. The leather felt sturdy. From it he gained a sense of stalwart immovability brushed with smells of blood and sweat.

Releasing his hold on his auristics, Aoren grasped another form of his magic. He drew upon his djed pushing it outward from his fingers to flow over the leather bracer. With his fingers he spread the djed out evenly over the surface of the bracer. As he worked he pushed pieces of the Shield into the crevices of the leather compelling the djed of his Shield to cling to the djed of the leather. The whole process didn’t take long. He rotated the bracer in his hands searching for hole or clumps of djed that needed to be smoothed out. When he was satisfied the Seer took hold of the understanding of iron that he’d gained from studying the dagger. He grasped the concepts of its structure, of its sharp coldness and the idea of its djed instilling those concepts into the Shield that he’d woven over his bracer.

Block iron.

When he was certain that he’d given the Shield enough mental prodding to nudge it toward the intended task he set the bracer on the floor. Picking up the dagger Aoren touched the blade to the bracer. He watched as the Shield glowed softly standing resolute against the iron of the dagger. A smirk tugged at the corners of Aoren’s mouth.

“Well, progress is progress. No matter how small.”

The Seer grabbed his other bracer spinning djed over its surface, pushing it into the crevices of the leather, until he was confident that it was efficiently covered. As with the initial bracer he instilled in the Shield the idea of pushing back against iron. When he was certain that it would hold up successfully against a test he rest the blade of his dagger against the bracer. The Shield illuminated where the blade touched repelling the iron. Satisfied, Aoren wove into each Shield the potential to absorb djed and spin it into its weave as opposed to just blocking it. He hadn’t truly considered the idea of completely walling off his armor to certain things. It would only make going into any sort of hostile situation that much safer. Protection was the only purpose of Shields. It only made sense to add them to the mundane protection offered by wearing armor.

Aoren slipped on the leather bracers testing their flexibility. Aside from the fact that he could see the Shields resting over the leather they felt no different than before. He briefly considered applying this particular type of Shield to the whole of his armor but quickly decided against it. In the event that he prepared himself for true combat he would be wielding weapons made of iron. It was better to make the Shield encompass a specific part of his armor to minimize the chance that one of his own weapons would bounce against the Shield in an unwanted way. Properly placed, Aoren believed that this facet of his Shields could yield a great deal more protection to the Sanctuary. Slipping off the bracers he set them back in their resting place.

The Seer reflected on the armor that rest before him. He considered notions of protection and the need for them. There things that steel plates and thick leather could deflect. There were things that they couldn’t. As ran his fingers through his hair making his way out of his room and toward the kitchens. He did not often visit the kitchen. He wasn’t much of a cook when all things were considered. He had enough skill at a stove or a fire to not burn something but it wouldn’t be gourmet eating by a long shot. Once he arrived to the kitchens he searched for three ingredients.

He found soft cheese easily enough. Not knowing his way around the kitchen it took him a moment or two to find the flour. Lastly he took hold of a few eggs that had been freshly gathered. He set the flour and cheese into the bowl then cracked the eggs depositing the yolk and whites over both. Deciding against splitting open his own hand in the place where the denizens of the Sanctuary’s food was made, Aoren picked up the bowl, a second one and made his way back to his room.

“Alright, let’s see if I can do this correctly.”

It wasn’t the most difficult of things to perform, the creation of soulmist. Still, it took focus to instill the concept of djed, the potential to be a piece of the puzzle needed to complete the recipe, into his blood. Aoren grabbed one of his daggers. He sat on the floor with the bowl resting in front of him. He brought his hand over the bowl containing the ingredients resting the point of the dagger on his wrist. The sting of the blades bite received a flinch from him, a slight tightening of his jaw as he slashed it open. He concentrated on the concept of djed, the essence of himself, as he let the blood fall into the mixture sitting in the bowl. When he felt that enough had fallen into the would-be soulmist, Aoren closed his eyes. He opened himself up to the power of Rak’keli touching his wrist letting the healing power flow through him. Aoren watched as the laceration upon his wrist knit itself back together.

[Sanctuary] The Spirit of a Shield

Postby Aoren on May 23rd, 2015, 6:23 pm

Placing his hands in the bowl he began mixing the ingredients focusing on the soulmist that he wanted to create. Aoren was not a powerful Spiritist by far. He had only been introduced to the magic a few seasons ago. He was not exceptionally well practiced at it. In spite of that however he was confident that he at least had the concept of how to create soulmist down. The mixing was almost meditative in nature. It required him to focus on the intent of what he wanted to create. He kept his mind turned to the potential of interacting with ghosts, the dead made to live again. His hands were sticky with the film of the rudimentary dough. That stickiness faded however as the dough began to take shape. He continued mixing until the cheese, eggs, flour and his blood was blended together as seamlessly as he could manage.

When the dough was complete, Aoren grabbed a pinch of it rolling it into a ball testing the consistency with his fingers. Sighing he braced himself for the unpleasant taste popping it into his mouth. The iron tang of blood mixed with the raw blandness of dough made him wrinkle his nose. He moved beyond that though focusing on instilling within the dough the potential to become soulmist. The concentration took a few chimes before he recognized the chilling touch of success. Aoren spat out the soulmist observing it quietly for a moment. It was lightweight, cold to both look at and touch. The ethereal appearance was always a curious facet to him. He was not overly fond of ghosts. In his life he had met a few of them. Only one of them had been pleasant. He had met a handful of undead. None of them had inspired much admiration. He had always walked away feeling unclean or worse…afraid.

He set the newly created soulmist down into the second bowl grabbing another pinch of the dough that he’d mixed. He placed it in his mouth repeating the process of concentrating to create the soulmist. While he would have liked to have been able to work more quickly through the creation process, such was not possible given the slow pace at which the soulmist formed in his mouth. It required largely concentrated effort on Aoren’s part to go through the process uniformly. Even then he could tell that what he was creating wasn’t the best.

In short order he had created a decent amount of soulmist though not all of the dough he’d formed was utilized.

He was well aware that the soulmist that he made would deteriorate relatively soon. Aoren looked around his room for something he might proceed to weave his experiment over. He looked down at the dagger just within his reach. He had been using it extensively thus far, he saw no reason for that not to stop now. Picking it up he grabbed a pinch of soulmist spreading it out over the blade. He was careful not to cut himself on the edge. The soulmist did not rub into the blade readily. The Seer drew upon his auristics extending his aura to spread over the influence of that of the blade’s and the soulmist. As he gained further insight into the structure of the blade, Aoren moved to rub the tool of his Spiritism into those areas he perceived as most susceptible to the soulmist.

[Sanctuary] The Spirit of a Shield

Postby Aoren on May 23rd, 2015, 6:24 pm

In short order the soulmist had been absorbed by the blade. Through his auristics, Aoren found that the blade adopted some of the properties of the soulmist though there were only the barest traces of it. It was as if the blade had only been coated instead of being completely absorbed such as with his teacher’s soulmist. A thought occurred to him then. Drawing upon his djed, Aoren pushed a small pool of it out of his left hand. He set the blade upon it rolling it carefully over the djed willing the foundations of a shield to coat the metal. What did not adhere to the iron through the exertion of his will, he spread thin over the blade with his fingers.

Grabbing another pinch of soulmist, Aoren kept a hold of his auristics as he pressed the ethereal substance to the shield. There was no reaction at first. The djed of his shield did not seem to interact with the soulmist in any manner. Aoren frowned setting down the dagger that he might work with both of his hands.

He touched his fingers to the streams of power within the flow of the shield. Slowly, deliberately he began feeding bits of soulmist into the djed of the shield. As he worked he imbued the shield with the idea that it should repel that which was ghostly and undead. Pieces of the soulmist simply evaporated as he worked. Some of it fell away, the djed of his shield rejecting the concept. Still, pieces of the soulmist began to weave into the fabric of the shield in a patchwork layout. When Aoren was finished he had worked through half of the soulmist that he had created just to create a trace presence of its properties in his shield. Even then the miniscule presence of the soulmist being woven into the shield began to dissipate in short order.

“Well, at least I know it can possibly be done.”

It was a start. Aoren knew that he would have to become intimately more familiar with the concepts of Spiritism in order to blend it with Shielding. Still, he believed he had a solid foundation for what could theoretically be achieved. It would merely take more practice. He could have been wrong though. It might have been that it simply wasn’t possible. The shield might have continued to reject the soulmist in conjunction with its own djed. He would simply have to do more experimenting to see whether or not it was truly possible. That meant he would need to become more familiar with Spiritism. It was a road he had walked before, the exploration of magic. He did not imagine it would be quick work but then again, nothing of worth was ever easily obtained.
