"Like this?" Zhol asked, his fingertips massaging gently at the muscle knots and tension beneath the oil-softened skin, cautiously exploring the curves of the body that lay beneath his touch.

The Inarta - he hadn't taken the time to learn her name - responded slowly, and simply, well aware that the horse boy couldn't understand much more than small words. "Yes," she replied with contented enthusiasm, clearly pleased with how compliant Zhol was being with her instructions. "But harder."

Harder? Zhol obeyed, but not without reservation, well aware of how delicate the parts beneath his hands were. No small amount of thought was spared for what Khara's feelings in all this would be; but the Inarta had said harder, and so harder was what Zhol's hands performed. His fingers dug into a particularly tangible bundle of tension, the muscles between her shoulder blades stressed and twisted from the efforts of archery. Carefully his fingertips unravelled the knot, tracing spirals across the intoxicatingly smooth and supple skin.

An involuntary groan of satisfaction emerged from her, and Zhol felt a smile tug at the corner of his mouth, his efforts persisting, his hands progressing upwards to her shoulders, kneeding the tension away, before trailing off down her body, following the shape of her back and her hips, and then briefly further, a mere moment spent with his hands somewhere they weren't supposed to be. That fleeting contact was over in an instant though, his hands progressing back up her body. He'd heard different explanations of what massage was supposed to do - the practically minded said that it was to encourage blood flow, to guide the body's attention to the parts where it was needed; the more spiritual said that it aided the flux and flow of djed within the body, and had all manner of other effects that Zhol could neither recall or comprehend. It didn't matter to him what it did though; all he cared about was whether or not it felt good.

As his hands ran upwards again, his head lowered, a gentle kiss placed between Khara's shoulder blades. He could feel the stern look from the Inarta whose name he hadn't learned, but he didn't care. Zhol had brought Khara here for her benefit, a way to help her relax, and unwind, and relinquish some of the stress and tightly-wound anxiety that the last few days had instilled in both of them; not to mention the toll that both their lives up until now had taken. Eighteen days, and their marriage already had enough ups and downs to last a year; Zhol was determined to ensure that if Wind Reach insisted on throwing badness their way, he would utterly drown it out with good times and happiness, so that neither of them could remember a single dark thing.

That had been the plan, at least; a plan that he had foolishly saved as a surprise. Had he not, Khara might have said something. Failing that, her hesitance would have reminded him of the problem; reminded him of the way she flinched away from even the most fleeting of contacts with anyone else. He would have realised that a strange place, with a strange person's hands on her would have dredged up the very memories that Zhol wished he could reach in and incinerate from her mind. Had he told her where they were going, he wouldn't have had to see that momentary look of horror in Khara's eyes as they'd walked through the door, nor feel the gut-twisting guilt at all the things he'd utterly failed to consider.

Fortunately, his mind had acted quickly, and stumbled upon a solution: and so here they were, Khara's husband following the instructions of the masseuse, trying desperately to echo even a fraction of how it was supposed to feel, and make amends for his oversight.

"Is this okay, my love?" Zhol asked, his voice a whisper, his lips lingering close enough to Khara's skin to grace it with another gentle kiss.

The Dreaming Lady was one of the places in Wind Reach that Khara never really had expected to ever find herself. She had often heard from others about it's wondrous offerings, but in Khara's mind they had always seemed the sort of thing that weren't exactly proper for anyone but the Avora and Endal. There were no rules that said that Chiet couldn't go, but it was the sort of luxury that she had never felt really comfortable with. Zhol had always been brilliant at making her question those sorts of ideas, but this? This felt too good to be anything but above her.

She had almost protested, almost said it was okay if someone else touched her as the complete discomfort she would have felt would have evened things out, but she knew Zhol couldn't bear to see her in such a state and so his offer had accepted. If nothing else, it meant that this could happen in the privacy of their own home instead if it were ever to happen again. Never mind the fact that there was no possibility of her even being capable of voicing dissent in that moment; aside from the small voice that insisted on reminding her of propriety, her entire body and mind had gladly succumbed to the sensations that came from her husband kneading away every ounce of tension within her.

"It is perfect," she replied softly and it was the only thing that could be forced to leave her aside from the occasional soft sounds that came out of reflex to what his hands were busy doing.

Maybe it was silly to have denied herself this sort of thing. The attendant had spoken of all the various benefits there were - not that Khara had particularly paid attention to them, but the woman had spoken for quite some time so there must have been a lot. One thing was for certain, Khara was convinced that if she had been any more relaxed she very well may have begun to melt like overheated glass. The thought seemed particularly appropriate when she let her mind idly compare Zhol to fire in that instance.

A playful smile crept across her features and her eyes opened just a crack, not that she could muster the energy needed to actually lift her head to look at him right then. "You are quite good at this, I think. I would joke and say this should be your job but I think I rather you did not do this for others."

A little colour flushed to Zhol's cheeks at the compliment, but it was that possessive comment, that implication that Zhol should do this to no one but her that his mind fixated upon. It happened rarely, but it overwhelmed him every time; he liked it when Khara asserted herself, when she insisted that he was hers and hers alone. He was completely and utterly hers, and there was not even the faintest shadow of doubt about that; but when Khara said things like this, it reminded him of just how wanted he was. For about the thousandth time today, Zhol realised that this perfect woman, this wonderful person, this beautiful Khara, was his wife; and the eruption of joy within him made him feel as if he could reach down and lift up the entire mountain.

A playful hand trailed it's way back down Khara's body, creeping slowly lower and lower, ignoring the confines of where they were supposed to be, and trespassing into places where only his hands were allowed to be. For a moment he entirely forgot about the Inarta masseuse observing him; and by the time he realised, his fingers had already strayed beneath the edge of the modesty towel thrown across Khara's lower body for him to abort now. Instead he let his hand settle into place, wrapped around the curve of her hips just above her buttocks.

"If we get back to our room quickly enough," he whispered, barely more than a breath, a tremble of apprehension and guilt and defiance clawing at the edges of his words, "Maybe I can carry on, and do this to the rest of you."

For the most part - Khara had to give herself some credit - she had been perfectly at ease once she had discovered that Zhol would be the one touching her and administering the massage. Her moments of slight embarrassment had been kept to a minimum and for the most part her thoughts had been focused towards trying to relax as much as possible -it was the reason they were there, after all. Zhol's comment, however, caused her to blush suddenly and try to hold in the shy bit of laughter that tried to leave her.

One day she wouldn't be caught by surprise by a flirtatious comment from Zhol. Today was not that day. Without really moving much more than to turn just slightly so she could look over her shoulder at Zhol. "Then maybe you should finish," she replied, not quite a smoothly or confidently as she would have liked to.

The masseuse rolled her eyes, not bothering to hide the display. Khara saw it out of the edge of her vision and it only made her blush further. A timid smile was offered but didn't seem to help matters much. It wasn't that Khara was ashamed of how her and Zhol could be, they were happy together. Rather, she felt that maybe they were taking up more of the woman's time than was normal. She had seemed patient enough when explaining the basics to Zhol, but now that the two of them were turning to more flirtatious manners, she seemed quite finished with the both of them.

"Come on," Khara began as she sat up from the table slowly. "You can keep practicing once we are home."

Zhol had waited patiently while Khara had dressed herself. Part of him wanted to offer his assistance, but he knew that his help would likely be more of a disruption than anything else, and that the putting on of clothes probably wouldn't feature all that extensively in the process. Instead he'd spent the time trying to scrub the massage oil out of his palms, but try as he might the scent of it still remained, even though the glistening residue had gone. He couldn't place the fragrance, but guessed it must have been some flower, or fruit, or plant, or something native to this part of the world. He hadn't thought to ask, and unless he planned on spending the rest of his natural life wandering around the wilderness sniffing at everything, he realised that it was a mystery he'd have to learn to live with, for now at least.

With the Dreaming Lady now behind them, and it's heady vapours subsiding from their minds, Zhol had found something else to occupy his hands. It was the simplest of things, and should not have been as enjoyable as it was; and yet every time Khara interlaced her fingers with his, every time she clung to his arm to be a little closer to him, it filled an emptiness that Zhol only ever seemed aware of after it had vanished. When they were apart, he didn't miss it, it wasn't the same feeling of missing as when he found himself lying in bed without her curled against him, or the longing that persisted from the moment she left until the moment she returned; it was more of a finishing touch, the flourish that turned complete into perfect.

They walked in contented silence, weaving their way back and forth through the warrens, meandering slowly back towards their room. Zhol made a few wrong turns, leading them on a course that was longer than it needed to be, but if Khara minded she didn't let it show, just nuzzled her head against his shoulder as they walked, and made him increasingly sure that he was the undeniable luckiest man alive.

"I love you," Zhol said, speaking past an utterly untameable smile. "Have I told you that yet today?"

"Maybe once or twice in the last bell," Khara teased and gently nudged at Zhol's arm with her body.

It was the sort of thing she probably wouldn't have done if there had been others around, but this particular section of the warrens that Zhol had lead them to was blissfully empty. They'd return to their rooms eventually and for now they had plenty of time to simply aimlessly wander Wind Reach. She'd intervene if they ended up straying too close to the deep warrens or anywhere else they shouldn't be, but until then Khara was perfectly happy to see exactly where Zhol would lead them; maybe he had more surprises in store and while she sometimes didn't react the best to them at first, they always ended up being something enjoyable.

A few more twists and turns were sauntered through before Khara finally lifted her head from Zhol's arm and a questioning look tugged at her features. She could hear something in the warrens beyond, but it wasn't a noise she was familiar with. It almost sounded like moving water in a way, but far higher in pitch; maybe more like crickets, but only if the caverns were entirely filled with them.

She didn't expect Zhol to know what the sound was, but couldn't help pulling away from him just enough so her curious gaze could level on him to see if he had any ideas; even if it was just to see if he rather they turned and went back the way they came rather than find out what was creating such a sound.

Whatever it was, however, wasn't giving them much of an option. In the few ticks that they had stopped walking the sound grew louder as it came closer, a clearer flapping noise adding to it. Realization came upon Khara all too late as she turned back towards curve in the warrens ahead of them just in time to see everything suddenly turn dark as the tunnel was suddenly filled with numerous bats.

Zhol was not a fearful person; not really. He was afraid of things, true, but those fears were usually rational - fear of harm, fear of falling, fear of those he cared about being hurt. He'd come face to face with dangerous predators. He'd fought giant hulking beasts. He'd fought with people that had every intention of ending his life. He wasn't reckless, and he wouldn't even have described himself as courageous, but he certainly wasn't fearful; not usually.

But there was one thing, one shameful secret, one thing that terrified him beyond all reason and logic and sense. He knew when it had begun: he had been young at the time, barely half the height he was now, left alone in the pavilion while his mother and sister ran an errand that involved girl things or some such, minding his own business and enjoying a late spring breeze that wafted through the open canvas of their home. All of a sudden, a dark shape had swooped into the pavilion: a monstrous bird as big as a wolf, as far as his terrified memory was concerned, one that had flapped and fluttered around frantically, desperate to escape from the cage it had trapped itself in, but unable to discern where the exit was. The cacophony of noise it had made had curdled his blood, and it was all he could do to cower in a corner until someone came and drove the flapping monstrosity away.

Ever since, Zhol had been wary of just about anything with wings. The smaller they were, the worse it was. A wind eagle, or the birds of prey that the hunters back in Endrykas sometimes used, those were large, and mostly slower and more graceful. They were dangerous, yes, but there was intent to what they did, and very little suddenness, especially in the case of the wise birds of Wind Reach, and the expertly trained falcons from his former home. Smaller birds, though? The ones that hopped around seeming innocent enough, and then would suddenly explode into noise and flight without the slightest warning? The bees and wasps that darted back and forth, no warning as to when their path of flight would change, no predicting where they might eventually go? The moths and insects that snuck into the pavilion at night, fluttering at candles, crashing drunkenly into his skin - his face even - as he tried to read? Zhol loathed them. Detested them. The merest sight of such a thing filled his veins with ice; the only recourse was the brutal annihilation of such a creature - for it was far worse to ignore it and then loose sight of it, unsure of when and where it might reappear.

It was that fear that gripped him as the fluttering wave of darkness burst around the corner and surged towards them like the explosion of a waterfall that had just been unleashed by a broken dam. His eyes instantly closed, arms rising to shield his head, his body hunched and scrunched in an attempt to wrap himself in an impenetrable shield against winged incursions. Even still, he felt them around him, not quite touching him, but the breeze from their wings brushing disconcertingly against his skin. Get away, he implored silently, as if sheer force of will would somehow protect him. Get away get away get away get away get -

"Away!" he snapped suddenly, lashing out with one of his arms as a bat came a little too close for comfort, a waft of it's motion breezing against his cheek. He'd expected to achieve nothing, to flail uselessly through the air and do nothing but make his shoulders ache and let his anger simmer down into futile seething, but the sheer volume of the bat swarm played unexpectedly to Zhol's advantage; or disadvantage, depending on your point of view. His skin crawled as his hand brushed against furry flesh and leathery wings. He wasn't sure how many he actually hit, but one in particular seemed displeased by Zhol's actions. Instead of evading - perhaps too surrounded by it's peers to do so - it lunged for the fleshy outer edge of Zhol's hand, tiny claws and needle-like teeth sinking themselves into Zhol's skin, and clinging on for dear life.

The tiny stab of pain was almost nothing, but the sight of it, and the fear that followed froze Zhol into a staring, horrified statue, and forced the tiniest pathetic yelp from his lungs.

It was hard not to feel intimidated by the sight of goddess knew how many bats flying directly towards you. Khara wasn't afraid of the creatures, not in the slightest, but it was hard to fight the natural instinct to try and shoo them away as they flew towards you. Bats weren't stupid creatures, though, or clumsy as far as Khara knew. She had watched them in the summer evenings darting about in the air in search of insects and perform sudden maneuvers that even some birds weren't capable of. Despite stories of their supposed blindness, Khara had long learned that the creatures were more than capable of handling themselves. It wasn't like you randomly came across bats that had run themselves into trees and the like.

At first she closed her eyes, a small smile playing on her lips as she felt them fly past her, their closeness only betrayed by the rush of air she felt against her skin. The sound was more frightening than anything else but like all things, Khara took the experience for what it was. She wasn't going to get hurt, after all, and in a moment of bravery she opened her eyes and watched as the animals came towards them, her smile broadening as she could barely make out the quick movements that kept the animals from colliding with her. All she had to do was remain still and she could stand witness to an amazing display of Caiyha's creatures' abilities.

It was Zhol's shout that disrupted the strange almost meditative thrill that was coming over her. She glanced over in time to let out a slight gasp of surprise as he flailed his arm. Before she could tell him to stand still, though, chaos erupted and one bat in particular clung on. Well, if nothing else, the shock of it seemed to do the trick into convincing Zhol to do what her voice couldn't suggest.

As the bats thinned, Khara tried her hardest not to let out a slightly amused laugh at Zhol's situation and instead slowly took the step back close to him and attempted to help both him, and his unexpected enemy, out. The poor creature was nearly as terrified as the boy as it bit down into his hand again as Khara gently wrapped her hands around it's squirming body and pinned it's wings against itself. Her hope was that the hold would keep the animal from hurting itself, but it didn't seem too pleased with her efforts. No sooner had both her hands gingerly taken hold of it than it turned on her next, sinking it's tiny fangs into the part of her nearest to it's head, her right thumb.

"Hey," Khara chided at it, whispering to the creature softly in what was hopefully a calming manner. "No need for that."

After spinning on her heel away from Zhol she half released half tossed the bat into the air, grinning as she watched it take flight and frantically flap after it's brethren. She only hoped the cloud could manage to make it to an opening that would release them outside without further incident.

With Zhol's assailant taken care of, Khara turned back to her husband, her smile faltering a bit as she realized that he wasn't exactly faking being terrified of the creatures. Ignoring the small bleeding bite mark on her own hand she quickly grabbed his where the bat had clung to and examined the jagged little tear in Zhol's skin.

"Nothing too serious, I think. We can bandage it when we get back to our room," Khara idly spoke as she turned Zhol's hand over in hers. A small tug of worry formed at her brow and she looked up to him. "I did not know those things troubled you so, I am sorry I was unable to warn you they were coming."

As the anger, and fear, and everything else began to drain away from Zhol, his body felt empty in it's wake, and he could feel himself beginning a slight tremble, his skin tone turning a few shades paler. Khara had extracted the bat from him like it was nothing, and she was chirpy and cheerful as ever. The utter terror that he had felt was entirely his own and, if Khara's nonchalant nature was anything to go by, utterly foolish. True, Khara had no shortage of bravery, especially when it came to danger and wild animals - she ventured into the Unforgiving almost every day, after all - but even so, the smile that she wore and the cooing tone with which she'd spoken to the bat, it was as if she were him, and he were some timid child frightened of the horses. How nonsensical must he seem to her now? How preposterous and naive? The fool outsider, fearful of something harmless. Poor stupid horse boy.

The colour that had faded returned with a vengeance. He could feel the shame beating down upon him like the merciless sun on a hot summers day, his face and his shoulders all burning with embarrassment. Here he was, the man who had vowed to protect her for anything, and he couldn't even keep himself calm in the face of a few harmless bats. He couldn't even look at her, and then she made it worse, apologising as if this was something she should somehow have known to prevent.

He tried to speak, but so addled and muddled was his brain that even words of Common proved a struggle for his lips to find, the sentences emerging clunky and struggled. "I am more sorry," he said quietly, his whole posture slumped; he felt so small and frail and useless that it was almost as if he'd shrunk down to Inarta size. "I am not much brave when it is things that fly. It is..."

His voice trailed off, the tremble in his extremities finding it's way to his throat. "It is lucky that they did not want to harm you. I would not have been much able to keep you safe then."

The worry she felt only increased as Khara watched Zhol slump in reaction to what had happened. A thought occurred to her and before she could tame it and silence the thing it escaped, chirped out in confusion. "Do you think I think less of you for it?"

A slight laugh left her, not exactly of amusement, more an exaggerated breath that left her just before Khara's arms were flung around her husband.

"You have nothing to be sorry for, silly. You are still brave to me. We cannot control the things we are scared of sometimes. I have met those who are frightened of the night time or spiders or even..." She hesitated and felt her cheeks growing a shade redder as she added her own irrational fear to the mix, even if it wasn't an outright confession. "Loud storms."

Her hands slowly slid from where they had grasped hold of each other behind his back and gently found his arms. The touch was gentle as her fingertips softly traced down until they met Zhol's hands and took hold. A smile wasn't entirely forced but still came hesitantly in the aftermath of what happened.

"It does not change who you are or the things you can keep me safe from. There is no shame in such things, there is only shame if you do not accept them. Sometimes it helps to just know you are scared and know you cannot do anything about it." Khara paused and shrugged her shoulder, a nervous nibble at her lips accompanying the forceful tug she did mentally as she swerved back towards the storms she had mentioned. "When I was younger, I used to be very scared of Zulrav's storms. They are so loud and sometimes it seems like they will make the entire mountain come down. But... They are just storms and it is just thunder. It still makes me uncomfortable, I am sure you have seen, but I have to accept that and it makes it so that I am not any less scared but I can be okay with being scared."

A small pout formed on her lips as her eyes fell away and one of her hands dropped from his in suit. "If that makes sense. I do not know if it does. All I know is that I do not think less of you for being scared of flying things, it is just another thing to know about you to me. If you wanted, I could try and help you learn to accept your fear like I did mine. But if you do not want to, that is okay too. You will still be my protector and you will still be my husband."
