ImageFull Name: Zhol Emberwing (DetailsZhol usually does not refer to himself by his full name, as technically the Emberwing pavilion no longer exists, having been burned down in a reimancy accident. Members of the pavilion directly related to Zhol's father migrated to another pavilion, though some (including Zhol's mother) still use the name. Zhol initially abandoned the name during his exile, but began using it once again in 515 AV - partly so that his name would sound less unimpressive by comparison to Brandon Blackwing, and partly so that he could share his name with his beloved Khara.)
Nicknames: Horse boyIn Nari. Usually used as an insult by the Inarta; used as a term of teasing endearment by some others, particularly Khara., VersdaVersda is a Symenos word, meaning 'good brother', often abbreviated to Verda by Drusilla. She uses it to describe both Zhol and Turrin, both of whom she considers to be her brothers., My LethUsed (hesitantly) by Khara, in response to Zhol referring to her as "My Syna". Zhol feels that Khara brightens his day and lights up his life; Khara feels that Zhol brightens her night and watches over her while she sleeps. The two also use other sun/moon related nicknames for each other: Khara calls him her sunset, or moonrise; he calls her sunrise and dawn., More..."Emerald Eyes" - A nickname for Zhol used primarily by his mother, in reference to his green eyes. It is a nickname Zhol remembers fondly, as his eye colour was one of the traits that Zhol shared with his mother.

"Flint" - Used by members of the expedition Zhol travelled with from Alvadas to Wind Reach. A reference to flint and tinder or flint and steel: survival tools used to start a fire. Once the expedition learned of Zhol's reimancy, fire-lighting became his de facto role.

"Endrykas" - Used mostly by Vincent (NPC), a retired hunter and the merchant at the Bulls Eye market stall. Refers to the fact that Zhol is not a Drykas, but still from Endrykas.

.
Race: Human
Caste: Avora
Gender: Male

.
Age: 20, since Summer 515 AV
Birthday: 21st Summer, 495 AV
Birthplace: Endrykas

.
Employment: Skyhigh Stables, Horse TrainerZhol is primarily a Horse Trainer, and is paid an Avora wage. He is responsible for breaking in young horses, teaching them to be comfortable wearing tack and a saddle, to respond to rider commands, to perform jumps when instructed, and so on. Zhol also takes responsibility for ensuring that the horses are regularly exercised, and helps with breeding and rearing new horses for the stables as well. He does assist with training new riders (though he is not the most qualified for this), and will often do the beginner lessons before someone more skilled takes over. He also helps train Dek and Chiet in how to handle animals such as mules, if they are required to use them as part of their job.

.
Appearance
.
Zhol appears average and unremarkable for a human. His skin carries traces of the tan from his youth spent outdoors in Cyphrus, but it has mostly faded during his time in Wind Reach. Very little about his appearance reveals anything about his Drykas heritage: his hair has been cut short, and he had not earned any Windmarks by the time of his exile. His 6' height is tall compared to some races, though not exceptional among the Drykas; he is still shorter than his father, despite his age.
.
His only exceptional feature are his eyes, which are bright, piercing, and green, and always seem to display his emotions regardless of how hard he tries to conceal them. According to the members of his family, Zhol has his mother's eyes.
.
Aside from his hair and height, Zhol can easily be distinguished from an Inarta by his clothing. While at work, he feels that the typical loose-fitting clothes usually worn in Wind Reach are impractical; but even in his private life he prefers to avoid the shirtless fashion of the Inarta, and dresses much as he would have done in Endrykas.

.
Markings
.Image
Since the 47th Spring 515, Zhol has had a Chevas mark signifying his marriage to Khara. The Chevas mark is a stylised feather, which looks as if it is formed out of flame, reflecting Khara's Inarta heritage, and Zhol's affinity for fire reimancy. The mark has the metallic look of copper - which echoes the low opinion that both Zhol and Khara have of their personal value - which looks tarnished around the edges, but when it reflects sunlight it picks up a slightly more golden glow, emphasising it's fiery nature.
.
Zhol has a small scar on the inside of his lip where it was split open during a fight with an Endal in the Inclement Weather. The palms of his hands have a few faint burn scars from instances where he wasn't careful enough with his reimancy.
.
He has no gnosis marks, or other noteworthy marks or scars at this time.

.
Character Concept
.
Zhol is seeking redemption, having been "exiled" from his Drykas home and family. He shaved his head as a representation of his lost status and dignity, and has slowly been allowing it to grow back as he regains his honour. Since his lack of skill with magic was the route of his exile, he seeks to hone his skills to prevent such accidents from happening again.
.
He comes across as stoic and sometimes distant at times, not wanting to risk placing anyone in danger by letting them get too close; but he is a deeply empathetic individual who truly cares about the wellbeing of almost everyone (excluding himself), stranger or otherwise, and will go to great lengths to find a way to ease the mental, physical, or emotional suffering of others if he possibly can. He is also incredibly sensitive; certain things will bring him to anger quickly, especially when that anger is in defense of someone he cares about.
.
Merits: amiable, empathetic, loyal, perceptive, protective, selfless.
Flaws: hesitant, hot-tempered, opinionated, self-doubting.

.
.
.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

.
Quirks
.
Zhol is left-handed, and favours his left for most things including sword fighting and archery. He refers to himself as "backwards-handed".
.
Particularly at the baths, though also in general, Zhol is uncomfortable with how comfortable the Inarta are being unclothed around each other. Not only is he self-conscious about being seen naked or half dressed himself, he also becomes very uncomfortable in situations where he sees - or could see - others in a similar state. As a result, he usually visits the baths late at night, when they are as deserted as possible.
.
Because he was exiled from Endrykas on his birthday, Zhol not only does not celebrate his birthday but is also does not let anybody know when his birthday is. Currently, not even Khara knows his actual date of birth.
.
Zhol dislikes small, fluttery creatures, especially ones that get close to his face. He has a particularly strong dislike for moths and bats.
.

History

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

.
Endrykas
.
Zhol and his twin Dinah were born to the Ankal of the Emberwing pavilion, Dardanus, and his second wife. The Ankal had little specific interest in Dinah beyond her potential for marriage; as members of the Ruby Clan however, Dardanus expected his third son to either prove his worth as a craftsman, or better yet as a warrior.
.
Sadly, Zhol showed a complete lack of affinity for any of the skills he was introduced to; and too small to hold his own against his elder brother's rough-housing, Zhol's Darda (a family nickname for their father) had little hope for his combat prowess either. When Zhol reached marital age and had still yet to be chosen by a Strider, his father declare him a lost cause and relegated Zhol to the lowliest duties within the pavilion: in particular caring for the Striders of his "less disappointing" siblings, one of the only things he showed any real talent for.
.
Zhol's mother was not so quick to lose faith in her son however, and arranged for Zhol to undergo the initiation for Reimancy as his sister had already done. Unlike Dinah, who had already begun to hone her control of water, Zhol displayed an affinity for fire; and like the element his skills proved to be unpredictable and hard to control. While demonstrating his reimancy to Yahalla - his sister, by the Ankal's first wife - he attempted too much, and despite his attempts to subdue the fire he had created, he was unable to stop the fire spreading and consuming the entire pavilion.
.
With the Djed Storm and the return of Ivak still very much in everyone's minds, Zhol's acts were seen as the worst kind of bad omen, especially given the pavilion's name; Dardanus was all too willing to rid himself of such an omen, and his disappointment of a son in the process. Using his sword, Dardanus cut off Zhol's braids as a visual sign of his disgrace, and cast Zhol out, forbidding him to return to the family. To distance themselves from Zhol and the incident still further, the family even went so far as to abandon the name Emberwing entirely.

.

.

.
Wind Reach
.
Believing his entire family felt they were better off without him - and inclined to agree - Zhol made his way to Kenash, and from there onwards to Wind Reach, feeling that Ivak's former prison was the most appropriate place for a bad omen such as himself.
.
Shortly after Zhol arrived, Wind Reach suffered a severe winter and a brutal famine that led to violence between the castes, and ultimately riots. During those events he met and rescued Khara, a game scout, who became his first - and for a while only - friend in Wind Reach. Over the course of 514 AV, Zhol slowly began to try and integrate himself better into Inarta culture, attempting to learn archery, and struggling to learn the Nari language. He formed another close friendship with another outsider, Drusilla; and earned something of a nemesis in the form of the huntress Azira. His feelings for Khara gradually evolved well beyond friendship, but unaware that they felt the way they did about each other, their relationship went through some agonising difficulties - particularly after Khara became the victim of a sexual assault that Zhol felt he should have been there to prevent - until they finally admitted their mutual affection at the beginning of Winter.

.
Family
.

Dinah
ImageDinah Stormsinger is Zhol's twin sister. (PC)
.
Back in Endrykas, Zhol and Dinah were like two sides of a coin: similar and yet opposite, and almost completely inseparable. While Zhol was warm but with a fiery temper, Dinah was always cool and calm on the surface but in seething turmoil underneath. While Zhol failed utterly at becoming the craftsman his father wanted him to be, Dinah was a complete natural. When Dinah was initiated into reimancy, she had a natural affinity for water; the complete opposite of Zhol's fire. While Zhol was a hated disappointment for failing to live up to expectations, all of Dinah's successes went unacknowledged because their father wanted nothing from her except the dowry when he married her off.
.
When Zhol was forced to leave Endrykas - on their birthday - he wasn't even given the opportunity to say goodbye. He blames himself for what happened, for being made to abandon his sister, and sees himself as dangerous to those around him if Dinah isn't there to keep him and everyone else safe. She is the one thing about his past life that he misses, and he feels like only half a person now that she is no longer around.

Etha
Etha Emberwing is Zhol's mother. (NPC)
.
An outsider who married into Endrykas rather than being born there, Etha is an earth reimancer with connections to the Azenth. She initiated both her children into reimancy, as well as her step-daughter Lillah. She disappeared frequently from Endrykas durin the twins' childhood for unexplained reasons, and was on such a trip - missing her children's birthday in the process - when Zhol was exiled from the city by Dardanus.

Lillah
Lillah Emberwing is Zhol's elder half-sister. (NPC)
.
The first child of Dardanus by his first wife, Lillah was never all that fond of her father, and had a much stronger affinity to her step-mother Etha. Avoiding marriage and dedicating her life to magic, Lillah became an air reimancer, and later a Stormwarden. While her frequent absence from Endrykas meant that Zhol and Lillah were never particularly close, Zhol always had the utmost respect for her.

Yahalla
Yahalla Windchanger is Zhol's baby half-sister. (NPC)
.
The youngest child of Dardanus' first wife - and younger than Etha's twins as well - Yahalla was very young when her mother was killed in a fire, and was witness to it. The experience left her mind slightly broken, and her full siblings tended to avoid their oddity of a sister, but Zhol always had a soft spot and a fondness for her. It was Yahalla who asked Zhol to demonstrate his reimancy for her when he lost control; the fact that the fire he caused almost killed Yahalla the way one had killed her mother was the reason for much of Dardanus' anger.

Dardanus
Dardanus Windchanger is Zhol's father. (NPC)
.
Born into the Windchanger pavilion, Dardanus had ambitions to become a craftsman, and so left to establish his own pavilion - Emberwing - in the Ruby Clan. He had many children by his first wife, and also twins Zhol and Dinah by his second wife, Etha. Harsh, judgemental, and at times even cruel, Dardanus resented Zhol for his lack of affinity with crafting. When Zhol's attempts to pursue magic resulted in the Emberwing pavilion being burned down, Dardanus saw it as the final straw, and had his son effectively exiled from Endrykas.
.
Rather than rebuild the Emberwing pavilion, Dardanus abandoned the name entirely, and returned with his family to his father's Windchanger pavilion instead.

Avo
Avo Windchanger is Zhol's grandfather. (NPC)
.
Part of a long line of Stormwardens, Avo was the last member of his lineage to carry a gnosis of Zulrav; his son, Dardanus, had little interest in following the familial traditions, and little interest in any kind of magical occupation at all. The two were estranged for much of Dardanus' adult life, until the loss of the Emberwing pavilion forced Dardanus to return and rejoin the Windchanger pavilion along with his sons and daughters.
.
Avo (and his pavilion) is part of the Sapphire Clan. He is a skilled webber, reimancer, and practitioner of magic.

.

.
Relationships
.

Khara
Image Khara is Zhol's wife, and his favourite person in Wind Reach. (PC)
.
They met when he saved her from being attacked during the winter riots of 513 AV, and after an initial misunderstanding about his "intentions", the two became close friends. Because Khara was a Chiet, she was initially nervous and deferential around him; something that became particularly problematic when Zhol's affection for her deepened, and he realised that Khara might be forced to pretend to feel the same if he ever admitted his feelings. Matters became more complicated when Khara was sexually assaulted by an Avora blacksmith; something that Zhol blamed himself for not being there to prevent. When Khara made the first move and admitted her feelings for him, Zhol reacted with panic and pushed her away, but the two eventually reconciled.
.
With their feelings out in the open, Zhol and Khara have been an item since the start of Winter 514 AV, and are virtually inseparable; their work obligations are the only thing that has had any success keeping them apart for more than a few bells. Their relationship developed in the Spring of 515 AV, and after being stranded together in the Unforgiving as well as other developments, they decided they could not bear to ever be apart. After promising to be each other's forever, the two became marked by Cheva on 47th Spring.

Drusilla
Image Drusilla is one of Zhol's closest friends. (PC)
.
Zhol and Drusilla met in the autumn of 514 AV, when Drusilla found him in the midsts of an anxiety attack in the warrens. At the turn of the season in particular, Zhol's anxieties about being an outcast compounded themselves; Drusilla became an instant confidante, giving him someone to talk to who understood what it was like to be an outsider in Wind Reach, and forcing him to look at himself from other perspectives, instead of just his own negative viewpoint. Drusilla adopted him into her web, and began to refer to him as her verda - brother, in Symenos. The sentiment is mutual, and Zhol considers Drusilla to be part of his new Wind Reach family.

Azira
Image Azira is Zhol's self-appointed nemesis. (PC)
.
When Zhol was attempting to teach himself archery, his observation of Azira's technique was mistaken for more amorous glances, instantly earning her ire. Despite Zhol's efforts, their first meeting ended badly - and violently - and subsequent encounters have not gone much better. Fate seems intent on forcing the two into uncomfortable cooperation, and Zhol finds her to be a frustrating mystery, unsure whether she lashes out because she is an emotionally wounded animal, or purely because she is an evil, unlikeable monster. The situation is complicated by the fact that Khara has an unfortunate amount of respect and fondness for the huntress who, though harsh and unpleasant to her, has for the most part been as "nice" to Khara as Azira's nature allows.

Languages
.
  • Fluent: Pavi
  • Basic: Common
  • Poor: Nari
  • Other: Symenos
Living in Wind Reach, Zhol rarely uses Pavi, reserving it mostly for speaking to the horses at the stables, as he finds that the hand gestures that accompany the language are often reassuring to the animals. He will also often subconsciously sign when communicating in other languages as well, mostly as a nervous fidget that he is not consciously aware of.
.
Zhol knows a little Nari, but his understanding of the grammar and syntax is terrible; the sentences he strings together are usually broken, with incorrect tenses and occasionally misused words. As a result, he mostly communicates through Common: something he feels very self-conscious about around the Inarta, as he feels he is "forcing" them to accommodate him.
.
He has also picked up a few words of Symenos from his friend Drusilla, though not enough to hold a conversation.

.
.
.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

.
Religion
.
While Zhol will openly admit that he feels the gods have little or no interest in him personally, he does pray regularly: usually for the benefit of others. His life and abilities have never particularly required him to trouble Avalis or Rhaus, but frequently he will pray to the mother goddess Semele to watch over his family in Endrykas, especially his twin; Rak'keli for her aid in the recovery of a friend or loved one; and to Eryis to offer wisdom and insight to those faced with difficult decisions.
.
Since the riots during the Winter of 513, Zhol has also begun to pray to Ivak, to safeguard his new loved ones in Wind Reach, and to help them with their emotional struggles. He has also begun to pray to Priskil as well: the watchtowers have become an important element of his romantic relationship with Khara, and he occasionally prays to Priskil to watch over her and his other loved ones.
.
.
.
Zhol's Prayer :
Dear Syna: please watch over those I love who linger back in Endrykas: let your warmth shine on Dinah, on Lillah, on Yahalla, and on my mother; let them never feel that they are alone. Please watch over those I care for here in Kalea, and keep them safe as they stray beyond Wind Reach; most of all watch over Khara, who I love as much as you love the moon.

Dear Leth: please watch over my family also; keep them safe from harm as they sleep, and when the moonlight falls upon them, please whisper my undying love into their dreams.

Dear Semele: please watch over my family, my friends, and all those in Wind Reach who risk their lives so that I and the rest of the city can survive; let the ground be kind to them, and stay firm beneath their feet.

Dear Eyris: please watch over those who struggle with indecision; grant them the wisdom to make the right choices, and to know that they have done, so that they will not be plagued by doubt as they sleep.

Dear Priskil: please watch over me. Please guide my hand, and let my fiery nature bring warmth and hope to those I care for; let me be like your towers, bringing light, safety, and security into their lives.

Dear Ivak: let my love for Khara burn as hot and as eternally as yours for Kova, and grant me the strength to unleash an inferno of wrath against they who have done her harm.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

.
Magic
.
Many of the women in Zhol's family were magical. His mother was a geomancer; his half-sister Lillah a Stormwarden and aeromancer; and his twin sister gained water reimancy after she was initiated. Zhol's father wanted his son to follow in his footsteps however, and refused to let Zhol be exposed to magic for most of his childhood. His mother taught him the basics of glyphing, but it wasn't until Zhol's father had deemed him a lost cause that Zhol was able to be inducted into reimancy. He became a fire reimancer, and immediately began to have difficulty controlling his abilities, leading to an accident that burned down his family's home, and saw Zhol exiled from Endrykas.
.
In the years since, Zhol had viewed his magic as a liability and a curse, for a while avoiding it's use almost entirely. Recent events have made Zhol more reliant on his reimancy, for both practical and combat applications, and so he has sought to gain more control and precision. Through the study of meditation, and more frequent - if not always voluntary - practice at using his reimancy, he has managed to hone his skills to the point where he can now influence air in addition to fire; and can, with effort, combine the two.
.
Transcending beyond his "curse" has also made Zhol more open to exploring other aspects of magic. He is currently attempting to learn the basics of auristics and shielding.

The only possession of any real note that Zhol brought with him from Endrykas is a basket-hilted broadsword that once belonged to his father. The basket is adorned with an intricate knot pattern, and the blade has the name of his now-destroyed family pavilion - Emberwing - engraved on it.
.
This was the sword Zhol's father used to cut off his braids prior to expelling him from the family. His father threw the sword down in disgust when he left Zhol outside the camp; Zhol keeps and carries the sword as a reminder of how thoroughly his ties to his old life have been severed.
.
The basket hilt is asymmetric and designed for a right-handed individual, which presents minor complications when wielded in Zhol's left hand. As a result, his fighting style has evolved into something slightly unorthodox, with Zhol favouring strikes and blade angles that a right-handed swordsman would not ordinarily use.

Adornments
.
In Endrykas, Zhol wore braids in his hair to represent each of his "loved ones". After his hair was cut off, Zhol eventually started to wear bracelets of braided string around his left wrist, each one coloured differently to represent a different individual:
.
  • Blue - for his twin sister Dinah (to match her eyes)
  • Purple - for his web-sister Drusilla (to match her eyes)
  • Orange - for his baby sister Yahalla (to match her hair)
  • White - for his eldest sister Lillah (who was nicknamed Lily)
  • Green - for his mother Etha (to match her eyes)
  • Red - for his wife Khara (to match a scarf he gave her)
He also wears a length of red ribbon tied around the same wrist by Khara; as a game scout, Khara uses red ribbons to indicate safe havens.

Housing
.
A small, barely furnished apartment in the Darniva Commonrooms.
.
(20x20 single room (400 sq feet) with a hearth, bunk, chest, chair, and small table.)
.
Zhol has very few possessions, and having grown up in the mobile city of Endrykas he is used to travelling light and only carrying the essentials. His room is hardly decorated at all, and he lives out of bags and containers, ready to pick up and move on at a moment's notice.
