Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Evening, 44th of Spring, 515AV

He’d been in Riverfall for a day and the city held endless delights. The air streamed with nearly tangible scents that drifted from the flowers and herbs and spices that bloomed practically everywhere. The Akalaks were practically everywhere, at least, comparatively speaking. It actually made it hard to see some of the other people scattered throughout the streets. The Akalaks always towered above everyone else, and their proud, and though Orin would never say this to anyone, haughty expressions were hard to ignore. The only exception to this was the rare woman who passed through, and for her it was like a sea parted. Orin didn’t really see what the big deal was, although if this was how all Akalaks treated women, it certainly explained why Aren seemed so devoted to Sayana and why the man was so infuriatingly overprotective of her. It wasn’t an excuse though and it certainly didn’t make Orin feel any more charitable towards the mercenary. They’d reached an uneasy truce before Orin left, and he figured that was as good as it was going to get.

Still, the day was too nice and Riverfall was too splendid and mysterious for Orin to get bogged down in grim thoughts for long. Although he would be more than content simply to wander around and take in the sights, he couldn’t. For one, he’d get lost immediately and was far too shy and intimidated to ask anyone here for directions. With their bearing and their rich clothes and dangerous qualities they seemed almost unapproachable. But the other, and far more important reason, was that Orin was on a mission. Before he’d left on this crazy and completely unplanned trip he’d started, in his own strange way, working on using a quarterstaff. He didn’t know why, but something about the weapon appealed to him. Maybe it was because the few times he’d seen someone using it in The Fighter’s Pits they’d taken on opponents that looked much larger and tougher than them and trounced them. So, in some strange way, the staff had become a weapon that Orin felt he could use to take on potential bullies. Maybe it was a stupid thought but it probably couldn’t hurt for Orin to pick up another weapon either. After all, while he was getting more comfortable with his daggers and throwing knives, he needed a weapon that had more range than his blades but he didn’t have to toss away to use. And the quarterstaff was perfect for that.

He’d gotten directions from one of the sailors who knew the city infinitely better than Orin himself did. As he mentally recited the turns he was supposed to take, he kept half an eye on his surroundings. He couldn’t get enough of the domes. They were quite unlike anything Orin had ever seen before. In Syliras, most rooms had either flat or peaked roofs, and although some cottages in Mithryn were round, they didn’t go anywhere near as high as the domes did. Nor did they have the elaborate artwork and carvings that these had, in a variety of geometric and artistic shapes. More than once Orin had been taken in by the swirls, curves, and lines they presented. Not today though, since his full focus was on making sure he got from the docks to the store without mishap. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity in the winding and unfamiliar streets, he arrived in front of what had to be the Arma’Drex Smithy. Despite the whitewash, the vents stained the walls black and gray with soot. Orin entered inside gingerly. There were two rooms, one on either side, each manned by an Akalak. The right side was filled with mannequins covered in scraps of armor of all kinds. The left though, was Orin’s destination. The glass counter held smaller weapons in its grasp, while the larger weapons lined the walls behind the giant blue man.

One more step took him over the threshold and into the lair of the weaponsmith. While Orin stood there just taking it all in, the Akalak spoke up, his voice gruff and unapologetic. ”Well boy? What’ll it be. I haven’t got all day you know.” Orin gulped, slightly terrified. He didn’t want to upset an Akalak in a room full of weapons though, so he quickly gave his request. ”I’d like some sheathes for my daggers, sir. And, if it’s not too much trouble, I’d like a staff.” The proprietor gave him a once over, then pulled a shelf out of his counter and set it before Orin. On it were all manner of scabbards for weapons of various sizes. Orin took his blades out, and started trying out the scabbards. Soon enough, he had something to hold both of his daggers and his throwing knives. However, he quickly realized he had a dilemma, since he had no place to attach them. Almost by magic, a belt appeared in the hands of the shopkeeper. ”Oh thank you!” Orin grinned as he slid the belt on, then attached all his brand new scabbards.

The Akalak didn’t seem to register his response as he kept his eyes on his weapons. Finally, he tugged down what looked like an iron bar from the wall, where it had been nestled between spears of various sorts. Orin immediately held up his hands in protest. ”No no, a quarterstaff. This is far too much for me.” The Akalak snorted, but didn’t make a move to grab another weapon. He simply did something to a chain that caused the dummy on the ceiling to lower. Orin sighed, but grabbed the iron staff regardless. When the dummy was on the right level, he lifted the staff and swung it at the straw man. Or at least, he tried to, but the weight of the staff was so heavy his arms burned and it barely connected. Setting the end of the staff on the ground, Orin turned back to the Akalak. It appeared that some serious bargaining was in order. ”There is no way I’m buying this. It’s not the right weapon and it’s not even well made!” Actually it seemed perfectly balanced and sturdy to Orin, but one of the first rules of haggling was to try and devalue the goods. And no matter how pretty it was useless for Orin’s purposes. Although, now that he was thinking about it, it would be good to train with a heavier weapon. He could use the extra strength and iron was a much sturdier material than wood. Still, Orin wasn’t going to let the Akalak push him around though. The Akalak, however, simply shook his head. ”Listen, I’m Haiduk, and I’ve seen a lot of fighters pass through this way. Trust me when I say this, but you’re taking that and you’re going to be happy. No arguments. That’ll be thirty two golden mizas and two silver ones.” Orin’s jaw dropped but when Haiduk refused to budge, he grudgingly counted out the money. He wasn’t quite sure how the haggling had gone so wrong, and now he was stuck with this giant and completely unfeasible iron staff. He was so angry with being outmaneuvered that he didn’t even register the unusual appearance of the front door until he burst through it.

And then he found himself not in the street he had just left, but another room entirely. He was so flabbergasted that all his annoyance fled away. He had absolutely no idea where he was.

Have a Nice Trip (Sezkero)

Postby Ssezzkero on June 14th, 2015, 3:39 am

"Oh!" Sezkero squeaked when she opened her front door. Maddox and Mason both darted out of her house before she even had the door open all the way. She had forgotten to leave the window open for the cats, but even if they had been trapped inside all day, there was no reason that they would run out so quickly...

Immediately, Sezkero's hackles rose. Something in her apartment had frightened the cats. Pulling her headscarf down from her face, Mayra stepped inside. Her shutters were closed on the other side of the room, leaving it dark. Perfect. The snake let her front door swing straight open, letting in as much light from the street as it would allow. The inside of her house illuminated enough for her to see no hulking figures. Nothing was immediately out of place, but that didn't mean something wasn't hiding. And where would it hide? Sezkero challenged herself, wide eyes scanned her bare living quarters a few ticks longer. With her heart running nearly twice as fast as usual, she ran into the room. The Iyvess immediately threw the shutters open when she saw them, letting the afternoon sun shine into her apartment. Spinning on hear heals with only the velocity of a dancer, Sezkero confirmed that nothing was in her apartment.

Except something was.

A door.

For a second, the snake only stared at it. The deep heavy wood door, not like any wood one would find in Riverfall, was positioned directly next to her front door. Something about the mysterious entrance gave her an impatient feeling, as if it was waiting for something. But waiting for what? Waiting for her?

"Thisssss isss the lasst thing I need." Ker sighed. It wasn't as if she could let this door just sit in her apartment. She just got home from the temple and she wanted to relax. But how could she relax with the possibility of someone walking into her apartment? It would have been a better idea to leave her house then. Walk to the Sanctuary or Alements and ask to spend the night with one of her friends, until the door disappeared of course. It would have been safer, for sure.

But ever since the plague, safety was not Sezkero's priority. She sighed again, defeated by her own thoughts, and moved her headscarf back over her head. Her hand flew to her waste, where she patted her flute to ensure she was armed, before heading forward. First she closed and locked her door, before moving to stand in front of the alien entrance.

A single hand fell on the cool metal knob, her heart exceeding its previous speed. She couldn't help it when she felt the rest pooling on her fingers. She glanced down to see the bronze liquid seeping from her pores. Oh boy. Sezkero squeezed the knob, turning it quickly and flinging it open. She did not wish to hold raw res longer than she needed to. If she was going to face something that required reimancy on the other side, she should get it over with. Closing her eyes a tick too long, Sezkero stepped through the door.

"What?" Ker glanced up. Torchlight illuminated her face. Immediately, she spun on her heals. The door was gone, but so was all life around her. No one was with her. Wherever she was.

Immediately, Sezkero looked up. She could see the evening sun far far above her, but she seemed to be in some sort of cave... no. There were spiraled stone stairs with multiple doors leading to the top, and... Armed men guarding each level.

What is my luck. Sezkero cursed herself, immediately running to the side of the circular pit she stood in. The spiral staircase had an overhang that successfully concealed her from the guards above, wherever she was. The res still pooled on her fingertips now, her body calling forth the djed defense. But she managed to concentrate well enough to stop the flow of res, looking to find a release for it. Her fingers were growing numb.

Suddenly, she heard a click to her left. Still under the staircase, Sezkero turned on the intruder. Suddenly, Sezkero stepped forward, placing her non-res-ed up hand near his mouth, two fingers just barely touching his lips. Quiet. She mouthed to him, before the human could make a noise. But before she could do more, she felt the prickles in her fingers. She had held the djed for too long, her hand was going to go numb, and who knew how long that would last. She pointed two fingers towards down and away from them, trying to disperse the air without the stranger noticing. He was not Akalak, that much most likely meant he was not with whoever was guarding wherever they were.

She stepped back from the man then, realizing she was far too close for strangers, but kept her scarf over her head. She took the few ticks to look at the human before her. She no longer thought about his height, but she focused on his features. His hair was tussled, likely from him running his hands through it, and his skin pale. Light eyes were clouded by the torchlight, not allowing her a clear view of their color, but his features were enhanced. Angular features were casting shadows across his face so that she could not tell whether he was a friend or foe, but the clear surprise that fell on his expression soothed Sezkero as she waited for any other reaction aside from shock.

Have a Nice Trip (Sezkero)

Orin gawked at the strange building he found himself in. He was staring unabashedly. If there was something even remotely similar to this in Syliras, he’d certainly never seen anything like it, although the knights might have something like it in the restricted sections of the city. Calling it a building was actually misleading. It felt more like a cave, albeit an obviously manmade one. But it had that peculiar damp underground smell, sort of a mix of mold and dust, that Orin associated with caverns even though he’d only been in them a few times in his life. His eyes ranged up until they disappeared in the distance. He could just make out the sky, tinged with the colors of sunset, brilliant with orange and red and pink. Sadly, it did little to illuminate his surroundings. A staircase wound around the curiously round room. If it had been aboveground Orin wouldn’t have hesitated to call it a tower. As it was, it was a strange mix of pit and building. The lighting was definitely poor this deep, but Orin thought he could see small openings scattered periodically throughout. Actually, now that he focused on them, there was a curious familiarity to them, as if the small darker patches that he was assuming were corridors of some kind, had been placed precisely the same distance from one another. If so, this entire structure was a remarkable piece of engineering and architecture. If only he had some small idea of what its purpose was. He could just make out a few figures of what appeared to be guards.

Biting his lip, Orin debated the wisdom of calling out to them. He knew how it might look though. If this area was under surveillance for whatever reason, calling attention to his intrusion was probably the least intelligent course of action. However, sitting in this hole in the ground until he was discovered or worse, until he starved, was equally unappealing. He groped blindly to the nearest wall, but it was completely solid, and he doubted that even if there was a tunnel or a hallway, it would lead him to anywhere safer than he was. It was a conundrum and Orin forced himself to quash the rising panic in the pit of his stomach.

He was about to take a step onto the stairs for lack of any better destination in mind, his doorway having disappeared as strangely as it had arrived, when a woman stepped from under them. Orin started, nearly crying out and alerting the guards to their presence, but the fingers she held to his lips silenced him. He was, however instantly wary, even more so than he usually was around strangers. Giving her a quick once over, Orin was more confused than ever. She was shorter, much shorter than he himself was. Her hair was covered with a scarf, for reasons Orin couldn’t even begin to guess, and in the low lighting it was impossible to tell the exact color of her eyes, beyond dark. If pressed, he’d say brown, but he had no idea what shade. He limbs were long, and her sharp cheekbones were softened by her chin.

She seemed as bewildered as he was by everything, but she had been here before him and perhaps even had been awaiting his arrival for reasons he couldn’t tell. He was about to demand an explanation when his brain nudged his eyes to refocus on her hands. And suddenly he realized what his subconscious had been telling him. Although it was different from what the other Reimancers had used, there was no mistaking the substance pooling around her. The bronze semi-solid material could only be this woman’s Res. Which meant he was in the presence of a mage of some sort. That in turn meant she might have actually brought him here in some arcane fashion. Although he’d never heard of a magic that could create doors in midair, it smacked of sorcery. And he had absolutely no defence against it. He’d never fought a mage for real before, only in training, and he had no idea what type of capabilities she might possess. Besides, she hadn’t done anything violent and he had no proof she was behind this. And Orin was an indifferent warrior at best. Much better to play along and see if he could make his escape from wherever this was.

Removing his hand from his dagger, where it had instinctively landed in his fear, Orin stepped back and jerked his head towards the staircase. ”Where are we and how do we get out?” His voice was as low and quiet as he could make it. With his luck today, anything above a whisper would echo and bring the whole lot of guards down on their heads. He tried to keep one eye on the figures above and one on the woman in front of him. He had no idea if either of them were actually a threat, but until he had a better grasp of the situation, he was going to treat them both with care. However, if this woman was on his side, perhaps a victim of the same prank or spell that had brought him here, it would behoove him to gain her trust. While he was terrified of battling a wizard, having one on his side in a potential fight was one of the best advantages he could have.

He lowered his barriers to here slightly, having to trust someone or else he'd go insane. "I'm Orin, and if this is how you welcome visitors in Riverfall I am not amused." He glared at the staircase, letting his eyes wander away from the woman for just a tick. "I don't know about you but I was just minding my own business when I ended up in here." He kept as quiet as he could, but as he spoke an anger grew to slowly replaced the terror that was making his heart pound in his chest. He didn't get mad often but whoever was playing games with him was in for a huge surprise.
