3rd Day of Spring, 502 AV
Keiran raced up the mountain side trail, his long hair trailing behind him as him and the other youth competed to be the first to the top of the Suren Cliffs. his friends were all around him, climbing along the rocks, shifting their weights, pivoting their feet in precarious ways to get the best leverage to pull themselves up faster than anyone else. Calloused fingertips gripped the tried and worn places that had been used as holds since before they were born. Sweat beaded down the Yasi's backs as they focused their eyes towards their destination.

To Keiran and the other truly hopefuls, the task wasn't as hard as it was muscle memory. Like everything else in Wind Reach, it was how much you knew and how well you retained the knowledge. Like at the moment Keiran looked up just in time to see another young boy overextend his arm, causing his foot to slip from the hold he had, sending it straight for Keiran's face. Gritting his teeth, Keiran rolled his shoulder and locked his elbow into place while his right hand had a death grip on the small ledge it was holding. As the boy fell, Keiran wrapped his left arm around the boys waist, pushing off with his left foot to bring his falling momentum towards him instead. Letting his right arm rotate along his shoulder as he braced his side and pivot foot against the rock for balance.

Thankfully the boy immediately searched for another hand grasp nearby as the others below them stopped to wait, or moved around them. Inarta were such an impatient bunch. Keiran slowly return to his original position, taking a moment to shake out his right arm a bit.

"Watch yourself." Keiran said calmly but firmly. He didn't mind the pause in his own momentum, or even helping out the boy. There was however no excuse for letting your own shortcomings potentially hurt others when it is easily avoidable. "If you can't make a reach, take the slower route." The boy nodded, catching his breath. Keiran didn't wait for the thank you as he pushed forward. He knew the boy was thankful, but as it was, Keiran was just as impatient as the rest of them, if not more so.

As they reached the top of the diving cliffs, Keiran stood on the edge of the rock side. Peering down the 30 foot drop to the waters of the Twin Lakes below. They would be heading for the smallest of the two, but it was still a daunting experience. Standing at any height should strike fear, and any fear should be respected. Keiran remembered what his instructors spoke about fear, and recalled it to his memory.

Inarta without respect for fear will eventually fall victim to its everlasting presence. Fear is not evil, it shows you your weakness. Once you know your weakness, you can become stronger as well as kinder.

Keiran smiled a bit, stepping away to the edge as some of the Yasi began leaping from the cliff and into the water below. He studied each one as they fell, taking in the arches in their back, the way the kept their feet together or not. Arm and shoulder placement, the way they tucked at the high point of their jump. He did his best to take everything into account and figure out what worked and what didn't.

All the Yasi knew that the Wind Eagle's, even maybe some of the Endal themselves could have been watching. It wasn't unknown that Eagles would want to see how daring or courageous the new Yasi were. It could have been any of them, but it wasn't a matter of execution, but of purpose. As Inarta we are bred on purpose, that it lies within all things, and these kinds of tests are no exception.

As the number of boys began to dwindle, Keiran took up his spot in the center of the rock, preparing himself for the leap.

What is my purpose?[/i] he thought to himself calmly, taking in the air around him. At that height you could really see everything. The way the waves sparked, the trees in the distant shuddered at the sight, how the grass flowed like a stormy sea as if they were alive. Were they not?

Keiran took a deep breath and stole himself, setting his eyes on the exact point he would plant his feet before leaping into the air. To his right, a boy shuddered a bit, being his first jump it was only natural. He was a few years younger than Keiran who had just turned twelve last season. As the ticks turned into chimes, Keiran anxiously waited for his turn to jump. The first person on the right ran up and took the edge with a grace. The second hesitated for a moment as he reached the edge, obviously overcome by terror and practically fell off the edge. Keiran refused to laugh like the others as the boy fell.

Only one more to go until it was Keiran's turn, breathing in slow as he relaxed his body just enough to maintain power as well as balance. Using all the techniques he had learned to put purpose into every muscle of his being. He was ready, and the time was coming for him to jump.

Something was wrong, and no one else jumped. Instead, the boy to his right and the two other Yasi that were to his left were staring in shock upwards towards the peak of the volcano. Keiran followed their gaze, a small amount of panic arising in him as he was pulled out of deep focus by the curiosity. Rightly so, for just above them the rocks seemed to be coming to life. Shifting around where they had been so firmly held only chimes before. They had heard the warnings about the rocks being unstable, but youth and pride clouded their judgement until that moment. Before Keiran could react, the rocks fell.

Keiran screamed for the others to get out of the way, trying to project his voice over the rumble of cascading boulders heading towards them. Fear isn't evil, echoed in his mind as his teachers voice filled his thoughts. Acting quickly, Keiran grabbed the boy to his right and shoved him into a small depression in the side of the rock. Knowing the boulders would ricochet off the top edge of it keeping him safe.

"Stay down!" he ordered as he turned to the other two. One of them jumped on her own, screaming for the others still floating at the bottom to swim away. Keiran however, didn't have time to jump. He was to far back to clear the gap between the rocks and the water at the bottom and he knew it. This child was small, maybe seven at the oldest, and Keiran instantly understood he was frozen in terror. Keiran flinched as the first boulder his the platform they were standing on to his right, shaking the rock under their feet with its momentum. He had only ticks to act before the rest followed suit.

You will become stronger as well as kinder, echoed again and Keiran wrapped the boy in his arms. Throwing himself as far as he could off the rock side.

Keiran Scarlet
Keiran's feet hit the edge of the platform, tilting him further as his boots gripped to its rough surface. Head first, they were both headed straight for the platform at the base of the cliffs with a torrent of boulders close behind. Spinning as they fell towards their inevitable deaths, at least his own death.

As Keiran's back turned towards the cliff face, he used the momentum of the spin to launch the kid as far out of the way of the incoming boulders as he could. He did his best to aim for the waters there, but they were spinning, and it was all happening so fast. His only prayer was that he didn't miss as he slammed into the cliff wall from the action. Tumbling through the air only yards above the rocks at the bottom.

He was close enough to see the white of the bubbles in the gurgling waves as they splashed upon the surface of the rocks beneath him. He closed his eyes and waited for the coming pain, as quick or slow as it may be. He was afraid of the impact; but it didn't come.

Instead at the last second, so close that his shins still struck some of the rocks resting there, he was yanked away and upwards from death. Something sharp and hard pierced his shoulders before releasing him into the water. He tumbled beneath the waves for a moment, gasping without the chance to breath as water filled his mouth. He clawed for the light twinkling above him as the muffled sounds of boulders came in from his right. As he broke the surface of the lake, gasping for breath and choking out the water that had managed to penetrate his lungs, he searched for what had saved him. It didn't take but a moment to see the magnificent Wind Eagle standing perched on a half submerged rock jutting out of the cliff side.

He towered over Keiran, with deep amber eyes staring intently into his own. He brushed his long hair from his face and stared back in amazement.

"Why?" he asked allowed, followed by immediately covering his mouth in shock. He had meant to think it, but the rush of everything clouded his senses. Bowing his head as best one could while treading water in apology. The Eagle however did not seem perturbed by the notion.

I could ask you the same question. Keiran heard in his mind, clear and concise. The deep emotions that came with it felt amazing in his chest and he was instantly overcome with a greater understanding and respect for these noble creatures.

"Someone had to do something." he answered, and then immediately redirected his attention, urgently whipping around to the right to try and get a glimpse of everyone else. "I apologize! But please, do you know if the others made it?!" Keiran pleaded, hoping he did not come off as rude for changing the subject so abruptly.

The Wind Eagle seemed to chuckle into his mind, a soft vibration that almost made his spine rattle slightly. Everyone is alive. The little one you saved will have a broken leg I assume, but will manage. he responded, not kindly but not harshly.

Keiran smiled to himself, "Thank goodness." he murmured under his breath, pushing back his hair once again as he steadied himself to face the Wind Eagle once more.

The grand beast focused a great amber eyes upon Keiran, seeming to gaze straight through him to his very soul. He felt the emotions that he had experienced at first glance grow stronger with each passing tick. Were you not afraid of dying? he asked seriously, not removing his gaze as he waited for the answer.

Hesitant, Keiran returned the gaze as he recalled everything he had felt only chimes before. Recounting every moment he could to the very end. "I wasn't afraid," he started slowly, "I was terrified." He paused as he stole himself away for the second time that day. "But Fear isn't Evil. It shows us our weakness, and I will become stronger and kinder because of it. I will always act upon my fears, no matter how terrified I am because that kind of sacrifice and courage is what is needed to challenge what was once thought impossible." Kerian finished as bravely as he could, his pride welling up inside of him.

Again, the Wind Eagle seemed to chuckle inside his thoughts, but it was different. This time it was warm and respectful, even friendly. What is your name? he asked, and his amber eyes seemed to smile with a fiery gaze.

Keiran lost his breath for a moment, but then smiled. Truly smiled as he answered proudly, "Keiran."

The Eagle nodded his head in reply, Skalori.

At that moment, Keiran felt the emotions that had been building up in his chest explode. As if chains of invisible substance wrapped him and Skalori in an unbreakable hold; and Keiran smiled brighter than he ever had before. Even Skalori seemed to be happy with the choice of his bond.
