Lora wince at the loud squeak that came from her door as she pulled it opened. The door creaked opened to reveal what was going to be her new store. Like all business owners, she had been provided this shop by the knights. She was rather surprised by the way businesses worked in Syliras. It was nice that she didn’t need to buy the place but she didn’t know how she felt about having to give all her proceeds to the knights but at least she would get wages for it. She was mostly surprised by the fact that she didn’t know this was how businesses worked before. She had lived here for years and never known. At least she had been very young.

She stepped into the dusty room and was greeted with a cobweb in her face. She waved her arm frantically in front of her, trying to get the web off. She coughed as she took a large inhale of the dust filled air. Evidently, no one had been in this large one room shop for a long while.

There were four tables and one large desk sitting in the center of the room, left from who ever had worked here last. All of them were covered in a thick layer of dust.

Lora pulled her satchel off of her back and dumped it on the floor next to the door. Coughing again, she made her way over to the dirty window on the left wall. She shoved it open with one hand, the other hand was occupied by covering her mouth as she coughed. The window did not present a good view, it only showed the wall of the building next to her but she hoped the opened window would get some of the dust out of the air. The next thing she needed to do was get all the dust off of the tables in front of her.

Having brought nothing with her specifically for cleaning, Lora wasn't sure what to use. She considered using her hands but changed her mind, realizing that would be too messy. Pondering what to do, she wandered slowed back toward the open door. As she approached, her eyes drifted to her satchel. Noticing her blanket sticking out of the side of the bag, she got an idea. She reached into her satchel, which was stuffed full of things for her new shop. Grabbing it, she pulled out a large blue blanket. It was the blanket she had sat on to sell her wares back in Mura. She had taken it along more for sentimental reasons than anything else but now she was glad to have a use for it.

Walking quickly over to the nearest dusty table, Lora set the blanket down on one and and ran it along the smooth wood to the other end. It sent a plume of dust into the air. Lora immediately sneezed and then went into a coughing fit. When she was finally done coughing, she looked up to see that the table was mostly cleared of dust. Working back over it with the blanket, she clear off the remaining bits of dust that still clung to its surface. She could see the dust in the air through the streams of sunlight pouring into the room. Using only her hand, she tried to wave it towards the nearest door. When that didn’t work, she began to think of a new plan.

Lora placed her knuckles against her lips as she pondered what to do about the dust. She could see no immediate solutions so instead she just decided to stop herself from breathing all the dust up.

She unclasped her cloak from around her neck. Since it had been getting colder here, she had started to wear her cloak when ever she went anywhere. Now she was glad for it. She quickly tied the cloak around her face so that it covered her mouth and nose.

Once again grabbing her blanket, Lora walked over to the next table she needed to clean. Running the blanket along the table’s surface, she repeated the actions she had done on the last table. This time, she didn’t have the coughing fit and was able to work much quicker. Although the dust irritated her eyes somewhat, she grinned underneath the cloak. She was glad not to be choking on the dust.

She continued he process with all of the other tables and the desk. When she walked around the desk to clean it she noticed a short wooden chair behind it. She smiled and cleaned it too.

Placing her hands on her hips, Lora admired her work. Everything seemed cleaned and clear of dust. Well, at least the tables and desk. The ground was still rather dusty.

Lora kneeled down and began to rub the dust of the ground with the blanket. She began in the corner near the door and slowly began to make her way further into the room. When she got about to a third of the room she looked up and frowned at how long it was taking. Cleaning the rough wooden ground had not been nearly as easy as the smooth tables had been. The blanket kept getting snagged on the ground and seemed to be more pushing the dust around that really cleaning it. She looked over at the area she had dusted and compared it to where she still needed to complete. It was better but not by much.

Standing up, and leaving her blanket on the floor, Lora stretched and cracked her back. It felt nice after being crouched over for so long.

“I know! I will just push it around with my foot. That should get it done faster and it will do just about as good a job as I am doing now.” Lora announced to herself.

Placing her foot on the blanket, she began to drag it around over the floor. It still snagged on the ground but Lora found that if she went fast enough, the snags didn’t stop her. Before long, Lora was running all over the room with a blanket under one foot. At first she had started in an order but it only took a few moments before she was running around in random circles. It was rather fun. By the time she decided she was done, she was grinning and breathing hard.

The dusting job wasn’t great but no worse than when she had done it by hand. She was still smiling as she began to try to figure out what to do next.

Lora decided that next, she needed to try to get some of the dust that had collected onto her blanket off if it. She grabbed the bunched up piece of cloth and dashed into the street outside. The street had a number of people on it but not as many as there might have been. It was still fairly early in the morning and she assumed that was why there was a lack of people.

Turning herself parallel to the building as to not hit any of the passerbys, Lora spread the blanket out and shook it up and down in the air in order to get some of the dust off. She watched as dust flew into the air, revealing itself in the morning sunlight.

She continued to shake the blanket until she thoughts she had most of the dust off. She tried ignore the glances she was getting from people as they walked by, questioning what she was doing.

Tucking the blanket under her arm, Lora began to search the ground for a stick.

“A stick would take care of those spider webs. I just need to find one.” She muttered to herself.

There were no sticks in the immediate area around her new store so she ended up wandering into the alley next to it. That alley was dark, hidden in the shadow of he large building next to it.

“What is this building?” She muttered to herself, looking up the side of the large stone store. She made a mental note to find out what the store sold.

Suddenly, she heard the sound of wood against stone and felt something make contact with her foot. She looked down. Skittering across the ground in front of her was a large wooden stick. Lora scooped it up and happily skipped back to her store front.

Wielding the stick in her hand, she entered the building. Reaching toward the ceiling, she was glad to find that she could reach it without much difficulty. Carefully, she began to pull the spiderwebs off the ceiling and wrap them around her stick.

She slowly worked her way around the sides of the room until she got all if he webs down.

When she thought she was done, she looked around the whole room. Noticing the small remnants of a spider web left near the door, she made her way over to it. She quickly cleared it off.

Lora stood back and admired the whole room. Everything seemed considerably cleaner without all the dust and spiderwebs everywhere. Although the room still seemed rather empty.

She left the room and tossed the stick back into the alley. Then she untied the cloak from her face and reattached it around her neck. There was no need for her to have it covering her face any more, now that the dust was gone.

Setting Up Shop

Lora rushed back into the store. Now she needed to get things in order. She strode over to the nearest desk. It didn’t look too heavy, made of thin wood. She hoped she would be able to move it by herself because she didn’t know who she could get to help her. She didn’t know very many people around Syliras and she really needed to get her shop in order.

She walked to the end of the table nearest to the wall. Wrapping her fingers around either side of it, she shuttered at how cold the wood was. It seemed almost more chilled than the air around it. It wasn’t very cold out this early in the season but the small chill that was in the air seemed to have absorbed into the wood.

Ignoring the cold, Lora tried to lift the table. It raised a few inches off the ground. She then leaned back, pulling as hard as she could on the end of the table towards that nearest wall. The table resisted at first then it slid towards the wall with a loud creak as the legs that were still on the floor slid across it.

Putting the table back on the ground, Lora let out a breath. It was really heavy. In actuality, it might not have been that heavy off a table but because of her illness, she had never been able to build up much muscle and so even something that might not weigh that much to most people, seemed incredibly heavy to her.

The table was now almost parallel to the wall that it was eventually to be up against. Lora decided that the best way for her to get the table where she wanted it was for her to move one end of it toward the wall and then move the other end so that it was parallel to the wall and continue with that motion until she had the table in the correct position.

She moved to the other end of the table and prepared to lift it. Wrapping her fingers under the lip of the table, she braced her legs and then pulled up with all her strength. The table lifted off the ground. It seemed heavier than the last time. Lora frowned. She was already getting fatigued.

Pushing off the impending issue of her getting too tired to continue, Lora yanked the lifted end of the table towards the wall. Once again, the opposite side of the table’s legs squeaked as they pivoted on the floor.

Lora continued to move the table in the same way until it was to close to the wall to keep yanking it backward and she had to move to pushing it forward.

Once she had pushed it into place, she smiled and placed her hands on her hips, “There, I’ve done it.” She grinned to herself.

Then she turned and looked at the other tables. At the beginning it had seemed a daunting task to get them into place but as she had gotten into the swing of moving the tables, she had thought it was becoming easier. Before long all of the furniture was where she wanted it.

The four tables were set up with two against each of the side walls. The desk, with the chair behind it, was put in the back of the room, facing the door. She had decided that was where she would sit, for people to buy her art from her.

Now she only needed to set up her art and then she would be ready to start selling it

Setting Up Shop

Lora walked over to her satchel. It had contained her blanket but most of its space was occupied by a number of different sized canvases, each covered in with one of her paintings. She began pulling them out and setting them on the floor around her. Her satchel was big but it was not big enough to carry all of the art she had.

Although she had not been able to take all of her paintings from Mura with her, as she had quite a few of them, she had able take a great number of them. This meant she had plenty of painting to sell, more than could fit in her satchel so many of paintings were still sitting in her home.

These painting that depicted scenes of Mura seemed almost a pity to sell. They were her link to her previous home. When she was deciding what she could fit in her satch before coming here, she had left the most homely painting back in her room. Even now she wasn’t sure she wanted to sell them. They were the reminder of the home that she might never see again.

Lora considered going back to her room to pick up the paintings that she had left there, but she decided to keep them at least for the time being. She looked out over the painting that were laid out in front of her. she tried to decide how she wanted to organize them on the tables. when she was back in Mura she had never had to decide that because she just spread them out in a random order on her blanket. it seems like there should be some way she should I order them but she still felt like it would look best if she randomly separated them.

Despite how many pictures she had brought with her they're still didn’t seem to be enough painting to fill up the large amount of space that she now had. It was so much more room than she had had before on her blanket.

Deciding to randomly place paintings on the tables, she grabbed the paintings nearest to her and began placing them on the tables.

After she finished placing all the paintings, she looked over her work. The paintings were laying flat on the table while the ones closest to the wall were propped up against it so they could be scene from just looking around the room.

Lora wished she could have paintings on the wall or at least have them somewhere they could be more easily seen. With all of them sitting flat on the table, she thought the room could have looked much more appealing if the painting could be seen. She made a mental note to find some way to help the paintings to be show.

Suddenly, she realized that she should put her best paintings as the ones that are propped up. She rushed up to nearest table and began to organize them how she wanted them.

It was surprisingly difficult to do. She kept rearranging them but she couldn’t quite get them how she wanted them. Eventually, she just decided to stop changing them.

She smiled around at her new shop. It was finally all set up.
