Day 32 of Fall 515AV

The clouds hung overhead threateningly, a dark grey that blocked the sun. They were huge, those clouds, and though fluffy looking, their color did not bode well for the weather the coming days. If this had been an ordinary Fall season, Brandon would have put his money on heavy rain coming down somewhere in the near future, but this time around... Snow, he thought, definitely snow. Usually, if anyone told him at the start of Fall that it would be snowing the coming days, Brandon would have laughed, but not now. It had snowed already after all, and it was colder than usual.

He sighed deeply, feeling the fresh mountain air flow through his nostrils and fill his lungs. Snapping out of his thoughts, the bat shifted his gaze back to the surface instead of the sky, then starting to walk again. As per usual around Wind Reach, the terrain was difficult to traverse, steep slopes alternating flatter surfaces, though all were rocky, and riddled with indentations and bumps. Even for someone well versed in the ways of keeping once balance, the underground proved to be hard to battle. Despite the efforts of the terrain, Brandon wasn't easily tripped, and he was able to cross to the hut he'd been looking for.

A wooden construct far larger than the bat had been expecting, the Greco Hut laid before him, sitting at the foot of the mountain the Inarta called home. Took far longer than it should have, the Kelvic grumbled in his mind, knowing fully well it was his own fault for walking too far onto the Sanikas Road, lost in thought. Ah well, it was a good stroll; he'd done far too few of those lately. Out in the open air, with only the sky above his head... A gloved hand came up to rub his brow; this was why he needed more of these strolls, he'd be less distracted.

Focusing, the thief stepped onto the porch, ears catching the almost-quiet creak of the protesting wood. Brandon frowned, one hand on the knob of the door. For all the information he'd been given when asking how to get to this place, the bat did not know what was waiting beyond. He had however picked up on some rumors. Gossip that told about the resident of the Hut laying in ambush while waiting for his students to enter. Whether that was more than just a rumor or not was yet to be seen of course, but the bat had spotted some windows embedded in the walls, so it was possible the so-called master swordsman had seen him coming. Hmmm. What to do? Brandon's breathing was becoming faster, his heart starting to beat more violently. The hand on the knob was starting to sweat. This feeling...! One of the rare moments he'd felt this in Wind Reach, even though it wasn't even close to the real deal. Still though, to feel this kind of thrill again... It was different though, it was more oriented towards self-preservation and less towards trespassing. Still, it felt good.

What do I do? he wondered, eyes having confirmed the door opened inwards. Logical too, a door that opened to the outside was a bad place for an ambush. If someone opened a door that opened to the inside, they usually stepped right into the room at the same time as they opened the door. When you had to pull the door open though, you did not, thus getting a view of what laid beyond. But, was someone really laying in wait here? Brandon frowned, not hearing any breathing over his own. Holding it in did not help much, as it was now his own heartbeat getting in the way. I need more practice.

Obviously, there was another way to uncover the truth here; peeking through the windows. Naturally, the one closest to the door wouldn't do at all, so another had to do the job. Relinquishing his hold of the knob, Brandon lowered his center of gravity, crouching to get around more quietly. True, that wouldn't have been necessary at all; he could just have walked around -even if he was just as loud as an ordinary person- throw a glance through the window and be sure once and for all. But Brandon was enjoying this way too much. He wanted to see through the ambush -if there was one- in a stealthy fashion. The swordsman did not need to know he had walked around the Hut. For all he cared the man was allowed to believe he'd been standing there the whole time. This was a challenge, a game to outwit the other.

Moving quite swiftly while crouching, the bat quietly made his way to another side of the Hut, easily finding another window to peek through. Silently he moved his face to the side until one eye had reached the glass, glancing inside. The inside of the Hut was surprisingly unique, though not really worth his valuable time. The area around the door was though, and there was indeed someone there, eyes fixed on the doorway, back pressed into the wall, some sort of long staff in hand. An ambush it was, good old caution always paid off. Well then, Brandon grinned as he removed himself from the glass, being careful to stay out of view, now it was time to come up with some countermeasures for that swordsman. How to avoid being caught into the trap was easy, but the question was what to do next...

A Lesson In Defense

As quiet as he could possibly be, Brandon stealthily crept back to the door, carefully placing down his feet. The foot he moved always first tested the spot he'd place it on, his ears providing great aid in detecting the silent creaks that would point out a noisy surface. Wood was not the best underground for a thief, especially if said wood was placed outside. Thankfully though, for one seasoned as Brandon it did not prove to be that much of a problem. The bat managed to reach the door easily enough, but the question remained; what would he do next?

Opening it was not the problem; he could just push his foot against the door and turn the knob. It would swing open immediately, while Brandon could step back. But what would the swordmaster do? Would he stay hidden and wait for the bat to enter? Or would he admit defeat, unhitching from the wall and coming to greet him? If it was Bran doing the simulation, he'd keep laying in ambush, making the other think they were wrong. Stepping out of the door wouldn't do him much good then. It would just elongate the stalemate. Maybe the purpose of this scenario was just to test one's abilities? A test to see whether they could make it inside without being hit? Well, that made things easy.

Again he placed a gloved hand on the knob, the toes of his boot pressing into the wood of the door, his foot only touching the floor with its heel. The Kelvic took a deep breath in, and slowly let it escape. Okay, he was ready. Quickly, the thief turned the knob, swiftly stepping back as the door swung open, but no swordsman came out. As expected, this was a challenge to see whether he could get in or not. Not too difficult, all the more so since the bat knew the man was waiting for him. Brandon had the element of surprise, he had the advantage.

Immediately, not wanting the swordsman too much time to prepare himself, the bat took a step forward, diving to the quadrant of grass, straight through the open portal. Somewhere along the way he curled up into a ball, minimizing what could be hit, as well as helping him roll away, gaining some extra distance between himself and the other man. Brandon got to his feet fast, unfurling quickly, and stepping back some more. No unnecessary caution, it seemed, as the end of the staff hit the ground where he'd be standing rather violently. “Not bad,” a comment came, the man who'd spoken loosening up, getting out of his fighting stance. However, that was just how it appeared to be, in truth, the man kept his weapon at the ready, and his weight was mostly supported by one leg. Brandon's eyes darted over the man's body for a swift moment, then doing the exact same thing.

Brandon raised an eyebrow, and the staff-wielding swordsman made a brief humming sound, one corner of his mouth raising ever so slightly. “Not bad at all,” he spoke again, this time actually relaxing. “I see you're not inexperienced like most who come here are.” The Kelvic gave a slight grin, “I take it you're Archeron, yes?” The man gave a curt nod. “Indeed. What can I do for you?” What indeed. Brandon hadn't really been thinking about that yet. A sparring match had been his original objective when he set out, but it was obvious this man was on a whole different level than the endal. Perhaps he could really learn something from this guy; he was rumored to be an excellent teacher when it came to close combat weapons after all. From the looks of it that wasn't just some baseless rumor; there was a whole wall of daggers, swords, and whatnot ready for use. Hm, yes, his skill with the dagger wasn't really great yet, perhaps Archeron could help with that.

“I'd like some tutoring on using daggers, if possible,” Brandon spoke, unsheathing the one on his thigh, pulling out of its hiding place. “Dagger training? That'll be three pinions.” Three? That was rather expensive... That was almost just as much as his weapons had cost him... Though, if this guy was to teach him, it probably would be worth it. Brandon swiftly fished the money out of his pocket, handing it over to the swordsman. “Good. What's your name?” The last bit came out rather bluntly, but Brandon didn't really mind; he hadn't really introduced himself yet. “Brandon Blacking. Unarmed Combat teacher,” he spoke, and Archeron looked mildly surprised, though only by the “teacher” part. “Well well, a colleague,” he muttered as he strode to the other room, placing his staff against a wall. Glass chimed twice briefly, and then the sharp, scratchy sound of writing utensils scraping over paper resounded, as well as the swordsman's voice telling him to take a look at the wall full of practice weapons and find himself a dagger to use for the session to come.

A Lesson In Defense

While the daggers themselves weren't that difficult to find, choosing one was rather hard. There were lots to choose from, and while Brandon did know that it didn't quite matter which of the blunt replicas he picked, he still had trouble deciding. Mostly because the hilt felt wrong. Perhaps it was all in his mind, but it didn't sit all that good in his hand. All of them were that way, and Brandon wondered if it was because the balance was off. It would explain why he wasn't able to find one he could just grab without being mildly annoyed.

Eventually he just took one when Archeron returned, still not too happy with the weapon, but he guessed he'd just have to ignore his annoyance. “Daggers are swift blades,” the swordsman started lecturing, “they are small and easily concealed. You can draw them quickly, and they weigh practically nothing. Compared to other weapons, of course.” Brandon nodded, that much he knew. “The downside of a dagger is that while its strikes are swift, they do not cut all that deep. To give an opponent a deep wound you need to stab them. And with the limited reach a dagger has, you're at a disadvantage when facing enemies wielding a sword.” More things Brandon already knew, but he was patient, there was no real benefit in wanting to be too fast.

“So, if you're going for the kill with a stab attack, you have to get close. Long-bladed weapons are good for keeping you at a distance, so you have to be able to slip past their blade, and into the area they can't reach. Which means getting really close.” Again, Brandon nodded, starting to see where this was headed. Archeron would be helping him practice getting up close and personal. “But before that comes defense. As I said-” the swordmaster spoke, “-you are at a disadvantage due to the dagger's length. Therefor it is likely you'll be forced on the defensive in a fight. If you cannot defend yourself, there's no way you can win. First defense, then offense.” Well, that did make sense; the reason Brandon had originally bought daggers was to be able to defend against people with swords and the lot after all.

As Archeron grabbed a sword from the wall, Brandon got into position on a spot the swordsman had pointed at. “Okay, let's start by seeing what you can do already. Try to block everything I throw at you.” Another nod from the bat, and and the swordsman let loose already, sword sweeping through the air, aimed at Brandon's right side. Immediately the Kelvic felt a surge of adrenaline, and he swung the arm that held the dagger -his right- towards the speeding sword, forcing the two weapons to collide with an audible clang. Despite the wildness of his swing though, Brandon's arm was forced back by the impact, whereas the sword continued along its path, albeit slower. “Daggers are lighter than swords, so a swing of a dagger isn't as powerful as that of a sword, remember that.”

The sword was retracted then, though it quickly returned, this time intent on taking a bite out of Brandon's left side. The motion was executed swiftly, with no hesitation or unnecessary movements. It was beautiful, and deadly, but also extremely fast. The Kelvic quickly stepped backwards, knowing fully well that even if he tried his best, he wouldn't be able to switch hands fast enough to block. His control over the dagger was still lacking too much for that. “Good judgment,” Archeron grunted as his sword only struck air. He stepped in quickly though, his last attack being woven into a new one, once more hungering for Bran's right side of his body, though it was lower this time, going for his thigh.

His response was fast, dagger switching to a reverse grip, tip pointing down. The blades clashed again, but this time Brandon pushed his free hand against the one holding his weapon, adding more force and resistance. It seemed to help, halting Archeron's sword's progression, and as it was being retracted, the Kelvic countered instinctively, stepping in and pivoting on one foot while the other sped through the air, close to the ground. Somewhere midway Brandon had lowered himself into a spinning crouch, his foot sweeping at the swordmaster's.

Quick as he was, Brandon's sweep kick connected before Archeron could react properly. The swordmaster fell to the ground as the bat flick-flacked back, creating some space between the both of them. Of course, this would have been the perfect opportunity to get close and point his blade at the foreigner's throat, but this wasn't supposed to be a spar, and besides, the swordsman recovered fast, preventing himself from slamming into the ground, though getting up took some time. “Well, I suppose I should have seen this coming,” the Sylirian man gruffed, dusting off his shoulder. “Muscle memory kicked in before I realized it,” Brandon spoke, though he wasn't really apologizing. Archeron grunted, however it wasn't really in an angry manner. Quite the opposite in fact. “Good. Muscle memory is half of what you need to be effective in a fight.” The Kelvic nodded in agreement.

“Though it was uncalled for here,” the Sylirian half-scolded, only earning a shrug in return. “...I suppose that does mean you felt threatened...” he pondered, and Brandon did not deny it. Truth had been spoken; he had indeed felt threatened by the swordmaster's display of skill. Though the fighting style was completely different from the Shinya's , Brandon's body had not been thinking of it that way. The only time he'd been this pressured with swordplay was when facing one of Lhavit's guards after all. Despite the incident they continued though, and soon enough both men had retaken there positions, getting ready for more.

Archeron gave Brandon some pointers on his form and technique, stating it was best only to block what he couldn't dodge -at least for now. According to the swordmaster, there was a technique that made it possible for daggers to block more effectively, though it required using two blades instead of one. “And for now I believe it would be best not to fight holding two weapons, you'll use only one, and only use the other when you need to block. It's limiting your options of attack quite a bit.” He was right of course, if Brandon had one hand free he could still use it, but if he held two daggers, he'd just be favoring one over the other. That wasn't the best scenario.

Despite Archeron's words, the two of them still practiced blocking, as being capable of doing that was important. The swordsman, now having told Brandon how to actually defend himself, worked in sets, attacking with one particular motion many times, then moving to another, and another. Slashes aimed for Brandon's side were up first, a barrage of assaults thrown at the bat, which he somehow managed to defend against quite well. Archeron was holding back of course, but still Brandon did not have a whole lot of time to react. If this had been a real fight, he'd have been ripped to shreds -though in a real fight Brandon wouldn't be solely relying on his daggers. As per Archeron's instructions, Bran moved his weapon in the right position to parry, slamming it into the blade of the Sylirian tutor, then returning to his neutral stance, ready to do it again. And again. And again.

Steel clashed with steel for long periods of time, first only on Brandon's left side, then his right, and then things were mixed up a bit, making things even more difficult. Left, low left, low right, high left, right, high right, right, right, right, low left, right, stab, high right, downward slash. Brandon whipped arm to and fro, intercepting and blocking those he could catch, moving his blade in position, pushing the unfriendly weapon away, then moving to the next targeted spot. The difficulty laid in Archeron no longer telling him what he was going to do, instead forcing Brandon's body to remember, forcing his eyes to read his motions. Thankfully he'd been working with the swordsman for a bell or so now, so he had gotten used to the motions he ran through while striking, but the Sylirian's mastery of the sword left him with very little time indeed. That the man threw in some trick moves did not make thing easier either.

However, both the stab and overhead attack were dodged rather easily, as they were by far the slowest attacks Archeron threw at him. Nevertheless, there was not much space between the bat's boy and the blunted sword when he evaded. More slashes came, and again Brandon blocked, having no time to think, merely acting on feeling and instinct alone, letting his body take over.

A Lesson In Defense

Postby Brandon Blackwing on September 27th, 2015, 6:19 pm

Salty beads of sweat sat on his forehead as the lesson went on, starting their descent only when they grew large enough. Then they pearled down, rolling down Brandon's face, falling down his jaw or chin. Archeron was shining with a sweaty sheen too, though he wasn't perspiring as much as Brandon was. Not too surprising as the man had more experience with wielding weapons than the Kelvic had. Though the fact that Brandon had to focus rather intensely had something to do with it too. Archeron just kept on aiming various blows at the bat, slightly speeding up, increasing the difficulty each time Brandon started thinking he could begin to relax a little.

Each time Brandon felt as if he got the hang of it, as if he got the timing of Archeron's attacks down, the man increased the speed of his assault, forcing Brandon to do the same, or risk getting smacked in the ribs, thigh, head or wherever with a blunted, though still very damaging, longsword. Slowly but surely the pressure was building, and the Kelvic started to back off, desperately parrying every blow. Each time felt as if he was closer to getting hit though, and while that was enough motivation to move faster and more accurately, it also meant that Archeron was starting to become more and more serious about this. Of course, Brandon did know that he was only getting to the point where he was as fast as he would be if he was serious, but that did not mean he would start using his complicated techniques. All things considered, Archeron would be only half serious, while Brandon had to be fully focused to remain unscathed.

It came to a point where it became impossible for the bat to block everything, the Sylirian swordmaster's skill with his weapon, of choice far outclassing Brandon's. However, in terms of speed, Brandon still had the advantage, having a lighter frame than the swordsman, as well as having less bulk. Everything that the bat judged impossible to block in time, he evaded, quickly stepping out of the way, realizing soon that there was no need to act that swiftly. As opposed to defending with a weapon, dodging and evading were embedded in his body's memory, explaining partly how the bat was able to move as fast as he did. The defensive dagger techniques were new to him though, and as a result, he was a whole lot slower.

Brandon decided to use the opportunity to fine-tune his movements when evading, minimizing the motions, though retaining his speed. It did not prove too difficult, though whether the same could be said when Archeron would become completely serious remained to be seen. As long as he had the chance though, the bat focused on actually using his blade, switching hands when necessary. In essence it was just parrying with the arm opposite to the side which was attacked, then grabbing the hilt of the dagger with both hands for extra power, and retracting the original hand as Archeron's sword did the same. Nothing too difficult, but nevertheless, it did require a certain amount of concentration. Sadly, that was the best he could do for the moment; no flashy switch from hand to hand, no juggling the dagger between right and left when the attack came from the off side.

It did the trick though, and while the one-sided dance of attack and defense continued for a couple more chimes, steel flashing and clashing high and low, Archeron's expression grew thoughtful, and his rain of slashes calmed down a bit. Enough for Bran to get a breather, though not so he could actually take things easy. Clearly Archeron's body was starting to act on its own, keeping up the offense, only slowed down momentarily. The tempo increased again then, going even faster than ever before. Too fast for Brandon's elementary use of the dagger to keep up. Too fast to pay attention to form and minimal movements. Sweat started flowing again, beads forming quicker, growing larger. Nevertheless, the Kelvic's footwork payed off now, allowing him to evade just about everything -although with only a split-tick to spare- and block the remained every so often.

A Lesson In Defense

Despite his best efforts, Brandon could not prevent being forced back; Archeron had started to move closer aggressively, pressuring the Kelvic. As the blademaster wove his attacks into a vicious assault, the bat weaved and bobbed, swiftly stepping back in an effort to stay just out of the sword's reach. He too sped up his movements, being compelled to go all out in his dodging. The longer it went on though, the clearer it became that the swordmaster was wide awake and not confined to his thoughts anymore, weaving complexer attacks, ones that were meant to confuse a foe, to make them prepare for one thing, while it actually was something else. Feints that led to or became devastating precise strikes.

Fortunately, Brandon's sheer speed proved to be enough to avoid getting hit, though he did not know just how long he'd be able to keep it up. His hands were starting to become slightly numb from absorbing all the blows when defending with the dagger. The bat reckoned if he'd been using only one hand instead of switching between the two, that one hand would have been unusable by now. There was very little time to think, but Brandon tried it anyway, attempting to split his focus between observation and defense. From what he could tell, Archeron was testing him, attempting to find out the extend of Brandon's skill. No doubt he'd noticed the Kelvic's maneuvers upon entering, and he'd seen the speed with which he could move, but that was not even close to being the only things that mattered in a fight.

Archeron was trying to find out how long Brandon could last, how long he could stay on top of his game. No doubt he also wanted to actually see if he could actually hit the bat, which he hadn't been able to as of yet. Petch! the bat screamed internally, falling into the trap Archeron had set up, too close to step out of his range, and too far to actually hit him before the swordsman did. Petch! Petch! Petch! Dodging was impossible, unless he threw himself on the floor... but that would leave him vulnerable, and would probably take too long. Wait...what was his arm doing? That attack, it had the same form as the normal side slash Archeron had used before... Brandon's arm was already coming up, pushing his dagger towards the sword, colliding violently, driven back by the impact. Brandon's feet pressed their heels into the floor, knees bending just a bit to give more stability. The other arm reached the first, hand over the other, supporting the dagger with enough strength to successfully stop the attack.

Quickly Brandon moved backwards, out of the reach of the blade once again, panting more than he had before that attack. The ground beneath felt weird though, not stable at all, shifting with every movement he made. Sand. Archeron charged again, his blade clashing with Brandon's time after time, the bat still being driven back. This needed to stop, no matter how thrilling this was. Brandon would prefer not getting hit by that blunted steel at all. Plus, his hands were starting to get really, really numb. The impact of the swordmaster's latest barrage was no joke, and perhaps the swordsman could carry on for a while longer, but Brandon certainly couldn't. Not after having been assaulted so viciously without having attacked himself. Another slash came, and the bat parried it, noting Archeron was starting to slow down. Was he getting tired too? Never mind that, the collision of steel on steel sent a shock through the bat's hand and wrist, and he felt his grip on the dagger weaken. He couldn't keep this up for much longer.

A last resort then. A plan to end this while he still had the chance. Distract, attack, disarm. Nothing too hard, though the problem lied in Archeron's skill. Would he see through it or not? Only one way to find out. Again the blades collided, again the bat managed to push the sword away, again a shock rippled through Brandon's forearm, and this time he dropped the dagger, half-intentionally. Archeron's eyes shifted to the falling blade momentarily, but that was enough of an opening for Brandon. With a powerful kick he dug the toe of his boot through the sand, sending it upwards, right into the swordmaster's face. The man yelped, and yanked his head back, his whole body following its lead.

There was no need to ask for more; this was quite a grand opportunity, one that could be exploited easily. And Brandon eagerly made use of it. He rushed in, closing the gap between himself and the swordsman from Syliras swiftly. The latter was flailing blindly, waving his sword around him with no real precision or goal. However, unpredictable as the pattern was, Brandon could not and would not allow himself to be surprised by it, keeping his guard up still. The sword came rushing towards him, though it posed no threat anymore; there was no technique involved, no precision. The deft swordsmanship was no longer applied to the sword, and due to the wild flailing motion, the only thing the blade had going for it was the strength of the man wielding it.

It was nothing Brandon couldn’t match though, as he swiftly drew and stuck his own weapon between his flesh and the steel of his opponent, the bat managed to not only stop the ‘attack’ with more ease than he had just a couple ticks prior, but he also succeeded in pushing the weapon away hard enough to throw his foe even more off balance, creating an even greater opening. Even without it he’d still have reached Archeron without too much trouble, though the bonus was welcomed. A hand quickly sheathed the dagger once more, then grappling the sword arm of the flailing man in an attempt to seal its movements. Another grabbed the man’s shoulder, and Brandon drew back his head for less than a tick, preparing to end it.

Though as he whipped his skull towards Archeron’s face, it was not the swordsman who felt a powerful blow sending him onto his knees, but Brandon himself. As his head sped towards its target, something smashed into his abdomen, knocking the wind out of him. Immediately the bat felt his grip weaken, and his body arched forward automatically. shyke… I was careless… his mind cursed as his mouth gasped for breath, seeing Archeron’s knee unbend, and his leg return to a standing pose. Then, a firm push against the bat’s own shoulder sent him tumbling down, into the sand. By then the bat was breathing again though, and he proceeded to get back to his feet, one hand reaching for the dagger he’d dropped earlier. Just when his fingers curled around it though, a blast of sand hit him straight in the face, not only entering his mouth but also his eyes, blinding him. “Always be prepared for cheap tricks,” Archeron’s voice came, as the Kelvic cried out in surprise and pain.

“Especially on sandy surfaces. Closing your eyes for a moment can be quite effective, though you have to see it coming first of course.” Archeron started walking away, his footfalls changing as he stepped onto different surfaces. Brandon coughed, sending most of the sand mixed with saliva back out of his mouth, though he didn’t feel much better. His eyes stung, and it became worse when he opened them. Not that he saw anything for the moment even with his eyelids not covering his orbs; tears were being mass produced, clouding and blurring his vision. Clattering of metal resounded, and then some more footsteps, first distancing themselves, then closing in. “Well. Let us continue,” Archeron spoke up again, “Defend yourself.” Protest bubbled up, and the Kelvic would have complained, if it would have helped one bit. Instead he scrambled to his feet, taking a defensive position, straining his ears to try and locate the swordmaster.

That was the easy part, the problem was defending himself. He couldn’t see a thing, and while his nose and ears were able to locate Archeron with relative ease, there was no way of telling what direction an attack would come from. Nevertheless, letting the Sylirian swordsman circle around him was not very beneficial for Brandon, so he turned around, continuing to face Archeron no matter what. It was quiet; no doubt Archeron wanted to use Brandon’s temporary blindness to the fullest, moving as silently as he could, breathing lightly. This of course aided Brandon greatly in locating the swordsman, as less noise meant less distractions, and his ears were sensitive enough to detect Archeron despite the man’s efforts. He was closing in, Brandon noticed the man’s scent becoming stronger, and his breathing sounded closer too.

The bat waited, a frown creasing his brow, certain he could do something else than just stand around guarding. Subtly he changed his stance, swapping stability for mobility as Archeron drew in even closer, now within striking range. A heartbeat passed and the bat exploded into action, one leg launching him at the position where the other man had to be, arm retracting quickly, then shooting forwards, the tip of his blunted dagger piercing the air in front of it. He didn’t hit anything though; footsteps coming from his right, as well as a waft of sweaty human-smelling air. Something swiped through the air, hitting him squarely between the shoulder blades, sending him down to the sand once again. His body reached out, reacting to the stimulus of the falling sensation, but even though his body knew how to avoid crashing into the ground, without his sight it couldn’t judge the distance very well, and the bat’s roll was only half-successful. He didn’t fall, but he didn’t quite roll as smoothly as he’d liked either. It was some kind of awkward summersault that launched him back on his feet.

Archeron was already charging in however, and Brandon cursed internally, wanting his eyes to clear soon so he could put up a decent fight. Sadly, that didn’t seem like it would be happening soon though.
