A Date With Ol' Queen Kova

NoteAll events that occur here are part of the build-up to the event on the 53rd that is present of the Sunberth calendar. They've all been approved and if they're not, I'm sure Royal will let me know.

10th Bell - 52nd of Winter - Suberth's Streets

The morning was overcast. Thick, furrowed clouds blanketed the sky as the Syna's influence was stifled and smothered; today was destined to be bleak. From the grey clouds above snow shimmered down to ground with no signs of stopping as the fat, fluffy flakes rested gently on each other, making the city that so resembled a patchwork quilt that had been sewn by generations bland and indistinct. A lone man stepped out of an alleyway, his leather boots sending up clumps of thick snow in the air as he left a trail of deep footprints that would soon be filled up once more. Snow settled on the shoulders of the man's thin coat that was wrapped tightly around his thin body, fending off a fierce winter breeze that whistled through the streets of Sunberth, left a cold burn on any exposed skin as it whipped up the man's long, snow strewn hair.

"The effin' fortune teller was right" Erik muttered to himself as brought a pair of raw red hands to his mouth, breathing deeply into them in the hope of giving them some much need warmth as his breath streamed visibly through his fingers. Winter had hit home and hit hard. Food shortages were once again rife, only somewhat alleviated by cull of the old, weak and homeless by the vicious cold. Now, more than ever money was important to Erik and he had been working extra hours when possible just to make sure he had firewood to burn and food to eat but it was taking its toll on man. He wasn't as young as he once was and between the dark, heavy bags that hung under his eyes, the constant shivering as soon as he stepped out of the door and his pale, lifeless skin that yearned for some real food and sunshine; he starting to break down.

Some wild yelling caught the man's attention as a group of men ran across the street from alleyway to alleyway, not stopping to explain their intentions as Erik stopped dead in the street, his head turning to follow their direction down the alleyway as he cocked a quizzical eyebrow at the scene. "We've got 'em"
"Corner 'em off"
"Quickly, before they get away"

The continued orders faded then grew again as the group ran wildly around the block, disappearing and reappearing from view, though this did little to aid Erik's understanding until he spied a young lad running down the street after them.

Erik reached out and grabbed him roughly by the arm, gripping him tightly to stop him both slipping from his grasp and on the snow. "What the fuck d'ya want?" The dirty ruffian asked indignantly, staring up the mercenary without a sliver of fear in his young eyes, a true ne'er-do-well of Sunberth.
"Tell me what the fuck they're doin'?" Erik demanded, trying to make his authority clear to boy though that seldom worked with the youth of Sunberth. Or the adults for that matter Erik thought with a hint of a smile touching his lips.
"Some drunk fellas found 'em carvin' those bleedin' symbol in the alleyways. They're crazies though, beat two of 'em before they told me to get 'em some help"
"They on the run then?"
"Nah, those morons are chasin' some tramps that were hagin' around nearby. I tried explain' but once they get goin', they can't bleedin' stop"
.

Erik paused for a moment, thinking about what to ask next. Part of him just wanted to get back home, crawl into bed and sleep for the next ten bells; most of him wanted that actually. But these symbols didn't feel normal, whether they were magical or just some new gang symbol had been the hot debate for days now and when Erik finally came to his own conclusion, he didn't like it one bit.

"Fine, tell me where the fuckers are!" He demanded.
"Over there" The boy said, sticking out his finger in a vagualy east direction "Three alleys down, you can't miss the yellin'. Now can a go?"
"Hold a moment lad"
He said, fishing three coppers out of his pocket before jamming them into the boy's hand as way of thanks as he had done countless times before for the ruffians of Sunberth.
"Cheers" The boy as he ran off but Erik had already dismissed him and set off in the opposite direction, ready if not eager to sort this situation out.

A Date With Ol' Queen Kova

Postby Erik Murphy on January 11th, 2016, 12:39 pm

Erik strode down the street, counting off the alleyways as he went when he heard the first animalistic bellow followed by a lot of foul cursing. Erik broke out into a run, following the sounds as he rested a steady hand on a familiar hilt. As he turned a corner, he came face to face with eyes that danced with an angry fire and a nose bleeding profusely. He reached for his blade, the steel glinting beautifully against the white snow as he prepared from any attack made by this madman.

"Woah, woah!" The man cried out suddenly, his eyes darting between the deadly weapon and serious mercenary before explaining "I ain't plannin' on attackin' you. It 'em mad freaks down their you want, it's 'em that gave me this bloody nose"
Erik looked over the man's shoulder, eyeing up the scene. There were a couple more blokes just like him, resting against the dank alleyway wall as they nursed bloody noses and swollen eyes, all the while cursing under their breaths. Further down led to a small opening right behind the Pig's Foot Tavern where a few more men were gathered round, clearly in the middle of some violent brawl.
"What's the situation?"
"I dunno, me an' a few fellas left the Trotter after a night of boozin'. We stepped behind to take a piss where we found 'em fuckers carvin' those bleedin' symbols. We confronted 'em and they started to attack us. They ain't tryin' to run but they're fightin' with some fire and spouting some crazy shit."

Erik had heard enough, he stepped around the man and strode quickly down the alleyway, making his way to the fight with his weapon drawn and ready to defend himself.

As a one of the combatant's was knocked back Erik spotted one of the crazies. Draped in dirty rag, his eyes were red, sore and aglow with rage and soon as he spotted Erik he charged towards him like a bull spotting a red rag. He swung wildly at Erik who stepped backwards and watched the clenched fist fly about a foot off its target. Erik, while curious, did not complain at the poorly executed attack and instead pushed forward and raised his blade high upwards before striking down hard on the man's temple with the hilt of his weapon.

The man stumbled backwards, bloody dripping from his bald, peeling forward before screaming out and charging once more at him.
"Sunberth will crumble once more!" He bellowed at Erik with all the strength in his lungs before swing once more at Erik with his other hand. His punch was explosive, not the sort belonging to Erik or a homeless mad man but a champion of cage fighting, it blasted all the air out of Erik's lungs and forced him to double over, spluttering in pain. The madman then locked his finger together, as if over some imaginary hilt and drove it down into the back of Erik's skull, knocking him face first into the cold snow. The second blow however did not have quite the same impact as the first and while Erik was in considerable pain from the first blow the harshness coldness of the snow invigorated him and so he reached out, tugging of the frail legs of the madman till he too was brought to the ground.

Erik clambered on top of him as the man thrashed around wildly like a freshly caught fish, they fought not as warriors but children rolling about on the floor over a toy or piece of food. Erik sunk his fist several times into the man, aiming for his balls, his kidney, his lungs; anything he could as he felt the man scratch his face, sinking his dirty yellow nails into Erik's cheeks as he felt bloody trickle down too his chin.

The man might have wriggled free if it weren't for the stranger he meet earlier, he pulled the madman's skinny arms back as Erik rested his knee on his skeletal chest.
"Hold the fucker down!" Erik yelled as he scrambled for his weapon that he had dropped in all the confusion.
"You don't need to tell me that" The man shouted back, struggling to restrain the physically weak yet rabid man.
" Sunberth will crumble again, we will seek our revenge" The madman repeated once more, frothing at mouth as his legs continued to kick out wild, eager to unseat Erik as he grasped his weapon by the hilt.

"Sunberth will crum-"
He was silenced mid-sentence by the sudden successive strike on his forehead as Erik rammed the hilt three times with all the force he could muster. On the third impact the man's head slumped back, his whole body relaxing as he was knocked out cold.
"Shut the fuck up..." Erik said in between deep breaths, his torso still shaken by the fierce punch. He looked up, quickly surveying the fight. The madman he had just fought wasn't the first to go down, a couple of sane drunkards had managed to overpower another but three still stood able to fight and with each man they had taken down they had become more aggressive and reckless.

A Date With Ol' Queen Kova

Postby Erik Murphy on January 12th, 2016, 4:16 pm

Erik climbed back up to his feet, his chest aching from the fight but he disregard the pain for now which no doubt would come back with a vengeance when he'd wake up tomorrow. The hung over group was starting to close in as the remaining crazies lashed out violently, pushing the group back before recoiling once more around the unfinished symbol.

As one man tried to charge through one of the women leapt forward and slashed viciously in retailition and screamed with her all her might "Sunberth will be nothing but rubble and ash, we will have vengeance!"
If she had a blade the man would have been struggling to keep all his organs in his chest but with no weapon she only tore the air asunder and little else. That didn't stop her following up with a brutal roundhouse kick to the man's vulnerable testicles though as he crumbled to the ground with a bright red face that was contorted in pain.

Fortunately his friends came to aid; they swarmed her quickly and grabbed her roughly before tearing her away from the protection of her group. They had been showed little mercy and she was shown none in return, no doubt many outsiders, who Erik had often to have a weak stomach, would have found her thrashing and screaming disconcerting as she was bound, gagged and punched to keep subdued.

With just two left Erik stepped forward to fill the gap. He sheathed his blade, instead raising his arms defensively if either of them were to lash out at him. We need them alive if we want get any sense from all this Erik thought to himself as the last man swung out at him, wielding some deadly yet fictional axe or mace, his precision was uncanny and his speed unnatural for a man with a straggly white beard and pasty, almost translucent skin that was stretched over little more than bone.

He stepped forward at the man lashed at him, Erik's own fist swung low before whipping back upwards quickly. He felt his fist sink into his chest before his knuckles struck his skeletal ribs and from there he pulled away and stepped back. While the madman's mind may be under the delusional it was in command of some hardened warrior his body was fragile and the blow knock some of the fight out of him but it was yet enough to make him stop.

"This city will be forgotten, it will turn to dust and scatter in the winds" He cried before swinging again at Erik. He was now certain these loonies truly believed they had weapons so he swung at Erik the mercenary instead of leaping back instead stepped forward, just out of reach of man as his arm arced round. Erik reached forward and grabbed the man by his rags, pulling him towards himself with ease thanks to the lightness of his pathetic frame. From there he threw him to the ground, his head cushioned by the thick snow but not by the onslaught of the group as the surround him like a swarm of piranhas as they kicked his feeble body with no restraint until the man could fight back no longer.

Only one woman remained, she had been the most reserved throughout yet her eyes told a very story. She bared her cracked, rotten teeth like a dog threatening to bite as she spat and cursed in Erik's direction, her body twitching and tensing with each step he took closer to her. He raised his left , his palm outwards as he prepared himself for any sudden attack on her part. She did nothing though until Erik was within a couple of arm's lengths but then her bared teeth opened and fire erupted from within.

A Date With Ol' Queen Kova

Postby Erik Murphy on January 13th, 2016, 3:25 pm

It appeared from nowhere. One moment all Erik could see was the blackened sides of her rotting mouth and the next a stream of flames were spat through the air right towards him. Their sudden appearance made the small stream off fire feel like it was a raging inferno that threatened to reduce everyone in the vicinity to ash.

Erik screamed out in pain, while the flames had falled just short of his face his raised arm was suddenly alit and the crippling pain that had erupted outward from his arm made it quite clear. The snow that already cover his coat sleeves did little to dampen the flames, with a heartbeat the flakes had been melted, heated and evaporated as wool burned quickly.

Erik crumbled over, rolling in the snow wildly as the flames were smothered and extinuisged by the thick snow that for once Erik was grateful for. As the mercenary screamed out in pain, the veins of neck bugling and he convulsed on the ground, the rest of thr group reacted. Some retreated in fear, to them the stories of mages had been just that; stories, they may have hated magic for the untold misery it had and continued to cause but they had yet to see it firsthand and so some stepped back with fear and awe in their eyes while a couple even ran, yelling the word "Witch" and "Magic" as loud as they could.

Others though reacted more violently, those that had lost friends, family and wealth to magic, and the charged forward as the mad women stepped back. They knocked her to the ground like stampeding animals and beat the shit out her, spitting foul word or just the fluid itself as they gave no care if she was taken dead or alive.

A strong hand held Erik still, letting the residual heat of the fire be quenched by the snow as he whimpered softly to himself in pain. "They've got 'er" The voice spoke out, the grating tone soothing Erik as he took pleasure in the woman's scream of pain and anger until she silenced by she force. He pulled to his feet by a couple of men as he looked over his left forearm. He could see the burnt flesh through holes in his now ruined coat, blotches of red and white that was horrible to look at yet impossible to stop. It would scar, with each movement in his hand he could feel the burnt skin stretch as pain continued to ripple outwards across his body, causing him to breath in sharply and clench his jaw in pain.

"You'll to visit the doctor" One man said, confirming a fact Erik knew already as he look around the clearing at the sea of bloodied and bruised faces then at the sight of the bound and unconscious madmen. "Aye, I'll take a trip to the doctor once were done with this scum" He said, his face contorting to even recognise the filth that he was surrounded by.

One man drew a dirty blade in response; he bent down to ground as rest the knife at one of bound men's throats. "No" Erik said sternly as some the men nodded in agreement with him, they knew what had to be done next "We take 'em to gallows. Tomorrow, they've got a day with Ol' Kova and the whole city will 'ave reminder of what we do to mages".
