Day at the Commons

Postby Amilyn on January 10th, 2016, 8:14 pm

8th of Winter 515AV
The Castle Commons

The main problem with picking a busy day to scout out Castle Commons was that it seemed like everyone picked the same day to scout out Castle Commons. Which...made sense, when you considered how many more people were around and how much easier it tended to make things, but it was also a bit frustrating when you weren't as skilled as some of the others.

Amilyn leaned against the side of the Pig Foot's Tavern, trying to look nonchalant and not like she was searching for a mark. She probably wasn't doing a very good job from the way a nearby stall owner was eyeing her, but he hadn't told her to scram yet, so she remained where she was. Besides, she'd learned early on that stealing from food stalls was a big no-no. At least, until she was a lot better--and a lot quicker--than she'd been when she'd first gotten the idea several years ago.

The crowd was constantly shifting in front of her, making it difficult to pick out any one target, but Amilyn managed to catch sight of one particular thief successfully picking someone's pocket and walking away with their mark none the wiser. It wasn't until several moments later that the man even realized he was missing his coin, kicking up a brief commotion as he searched the crowd for a likely-looking scapegoat. Amilyn casually shifted her gaze towards someone else, so as not to catch the man's attention, and the man was quickly swallowed back up by the crowd.

Several chimes and the twelfth bell passed before she figured she should probably get down to business. She pushed off the wall and edged her way into the crowd, picking her path carefully and trying to stay aware of everyone around her so she wouldn't run into someone before she was ready. Or before someone decided she looked like a good target. Neither scenario had turned out very well for her before and she wasn't exactly looking forward to a repeat anytime soon.

Day at the Commons

It wasn't exactly easy to pick someone out of such a busy crowd, with people hurrying here and there to finish up getting what they needed, so they could retreat to their (relatively) warmer homes, but she managed marked a few as possibilities. One woman was clearly getting irritated at one of the stalls. A man was having trouble keeping his eyes on several kids as his probable-wife looked through another stall's inventory. A different man slouched dejectedly past Amilyn, hunched over with his head hanging and arms folded across his chest.

Amilyn considered the last man, who looked lost in his own world, and began slowly trailing after him. She couldn't tell whether he was native Sunberthian from behind, but there was no way he wasn't at least mildly aware of his surroundings because he hadn't managed to run into anyone yet. She was too slow in committing, though, as another person brushed right between them and Amilyn caught a momentary glint of coin in the person's hand. She sighed to herself and broke off the trail, once again scanning for possible marks nearby.

Immediately, now that she wasn't focused on her own target, she noticed the man who was deliberately walking straight towards her with the clear intention to either knock into her or just barely miss hitting her as he passed by. Amilyn was almost certain that this was another pickpocket trawling for coin on a busy market day, which made her glad that she didn't tend to carry much when she went hunting.

True to her thoughts, she felt grasping fingers on her empty hip barely a moment before the man rammed into her right shoulder, sending them both staggering away from each other. She, on the other hand, had managed to get a firm grip on the pouch at his hip and the force of their collision caused the strings to snap, without alerting the man somehow. Lucky.

They exchanged a brief wary glance before turning to continue on their ways and, as soon as the man's attention turned away from her, Amilyn ducked out of the crowd, slipping between two stalls to disappear off the main pathway. Out of sight, she spared a quick moment to check how much she'd managed to get and was unsurprised to see two Gold, five Silver, and eight Copper Mizas. The man couldn't be much better than her, if that was his method of pickpocketing people. He also had to be rather new around here because running into people like that was sure to cause a fight, especially if he picked the wrong mark.

Amilyn shrugged to herself and dumped her newly-obtained coin into her own money pouch. Oh, well. Wasn't her problem. The man would either learn or he'd be killed. She still had work to do.

Day at the Commons

She followed one of the back streets until it led back into the main area of the Commons and hovered near the mouth of it, scanning the crowds for her next target. A harried group of men passed by, loudly arguing about something or other, complete with wild gestures and rising voices, and somehow they all managed to miss the people that would trail behind them for a bit before disappearing back into the crowd. Amilyn watched them go, but didn't bother following; at the rate the other pickpockets were going, if those men weren't broke yet, they'd be soon.

She slipped into the crowd the moment she caught sight of the woman haggling with one of the stall owners. They'd both probably be too busy to notice her, as long as she just sidled up on one side of them and took a moment to glance over the wares. Vegetables, it looked like, and Amilyn caught the owner shooting her a brief look before dismissing her and turning back to the woman determinedly trying to bring his prices down. With her left hand, Amilyn carefully slipped her hand into the woman's pocket, grabbed what she could, and pulled her hand back out, all while pretending to look at some carrots that happened to be between the two haggling. The nearby hired help gave her a suspicious once over when Amilyn passed behind the woman to leave, but he didn't stop her as she walked with the flow of the crowd.

She took her time circling back to the Pig Foot's Tavern, idly looking for someone else to pickpocket, but she didn't see any targets she was willing to risk. She deliberately sidestepped the two kids who ran past her, watching them carefully for signs of sticky fingers, but they only scowled at her and continued on. One ended up colliding with a woman, knocking all of her purchases out of her hands, and while that one apologized, the other filched some of the apples that had rolled behind the woman. Just as she figured.

The Pig Foot's was well within sight when a man suddenly staggered out of it, turned into an alleyway, and began retching. Amilyn blinked and glanced back at the entrance to the tavern, expecting to see someone follow the man, but a full two chimes passed without anyone else showing. By the next chime, the previous sounds had been replaced by...either snoring or wheezing, she wasn't quite sure.

Amilyn took a deep breath before glancing around the corner and spotting the man in a heap against the tavern's wall. He was lying on his side and his chest rose evenly and regularly, so she figured he'd fallen asleep. All the better for her.

Day at the Commons

Amilyn held her breath and carefully picked her way over to the man's side, making very sure to sidestep the splattered ground and not inhale. Unfortunately, it seemed like the man had fallen asleep on his right side, which was where most people tended to tie their money pouches, but she checked his exposed hip anyway, just to be sure. No such luck.

If only the man hadn't fallen asleep with his back to the wall; it would've made things a whole lot easier for her, Amilyn thought as she eyed the man's current position and tried to ignore the...stuff stinking up the middle of the alley. Just one simple push and he'd be on his back, she'd have her coin, and she'd be out of this alley, counting up her earnings for the day, instead of trying to figure out whether he'd wake up if she tried to pull him onto his front.

Figuring she might as well try, she began straightening him out to make it easier to tip him over and tried not to exhale too quickly. This mainly consisted of pulling his legs out straight before pulling and pushing on his shoulder and back to lay him flat on his front. He barely even stirred at his change in position, though she had to take a moment to push down the urge to retch, breathing as shallowly as possible through her mouth. Amilyn only lifted his other hip long enough to ensure there was a coin purse present, unsheathe her dagger, and cut it loose. Once she'd gotten what she wanted, she let him lay in the dirt, practically threw her dagger back into its sheathe, and got out of there as quickly as she could.

Back in the streets, Amilyn waited until she was well on her way back to her rooms before she tentatively inhaled through her nose again, relief swamping her when the air was clear of the smell of sick. She ambled almost cheerfully back towards the Sunset Quarter with her hands in her pockets, loosely gripping the coin she hadn't yet had a chance to put away. Once back in her room, she dropped quietly to the floor and pulled out her newly-earned Mizas to count out what she'd gotten.

Two Gold, five Silver, and eight Copper from the other pickpocket. A Gold, six Silver, and three Copper from the lady. Eight Silver and two Copper from the drunk. All in all, three Gold, nineteen Silver, and thirteen Copper. It wasn't exactly a bad haul, but she'd probably have to head out again in a few hours.

Amilyn sighed as she tipped the Mizas back into her coin pouch. She wasn't entirely sure it'd been worth dealing with the drunk in the alley, but easy money was easy money. Maybe next time, she'd just take a risk on someone else instead.
