Day on the Town

38 Winter, 515
Early Afternoon

It wasn't unsual for the Kelvic to sleep well past the break of dawn. Today was one of those days, but luckily Syna had yet to reach her peak in the sky. It was before noon, but it was past the tenth bell of the day. As he lay on his couch, groggily falter between the realms of sleep and wakeness, his thoughts settled on his newfound love, Elann. The past few days had altered his fate forever, he felt. He hoped with all his might that it was for the better and not worse. Still, as Elann had voiced before, she seemed to be cursed with an eventual misstep regardless of how blessed she appeared to be. One thing could be going well, but then another, ill fated event would happen. He told her that they would face such ill fates together, with their gods backing them due to their devotion but, laying there, he couldn't help but let the doubts wallow.

While lying belly up on the couch with one arm hooked behind his head and the other dangling off onto the floor, he drifted again. He was woken by the chime of the eleventh bell resounding through the city. It was faintly heard through his apartment's walls, but it was enough to shake him from his light slumber. Reluctantly he sat up, sleep gripped eyes darting about the premises. He wiped them with the backs of his hands then swiveled on the couch until his barefeet touched the floor. The coolness of the stone sent a chill up his legs, making his hair stand on end. His hearth's fire had faltered in the night and he had been too lazy to restoke it. It would prove to be wasted effort, he planned to take Elann out today after all.

Unlike Noah, Elann was a homebody. She had no reservations about spending her entire day within the confides of her apartment. She always found something to occupy her time. He, on the other hand, had been so accustom to being active, it was hard for him to settle. She probably noticed as much; he would fidget if sitting still for too long, would pace aimlessly at times just to feel as if he was moving. It wasn't that he needed to be productive, per say, he just wanted to move, shirking responsibilities or not.

He stood, moving towards his bedroom. The door was cracked and had remained as such for more than a day now. For someone fortunate enough to have a home big enough for a front room and a bedroom, he rarely used the room for sleeping to its purpose. It was wasted space. The bed was still made from Elann's insisting, but everything else was how he liked it: ordered chaos.

Noah reemerged from his bedroom dressed and freshly shaven. He recalled Elann liking his clean shaven face, so he would keep it so. The fire in his hearth had smoldered entirely, but he stirred the embers just in case, making sure that the risk of a flame reigniting was null. Once satisfied he left his apartment, locking his door, and dropping the key in his trouser pocket. His newly purchased high, black leather boots carried him down the hall to Elann's apartment. When he arrived his knuckles rapped on the wooden structure. He never used the door's hammer, the wincing memory of when his finger was smashed in one as a child was still fresh in his memory.

Outside he awaited for her to answer. The dim light was enough to show the brightness of his white cloak which was draped over a dark blue, plain tabard. His hands were covered in leather, fur-lined gloves, and his trousers covered the highness of his boots. As usually he found his niche within the door's frame where his shoulder rested until she answered. He was somberly surprised that she had not called for him today already.

Elann had grown accustomed to people coming over to her home at random hours, especially on her days off. The peace of not having to worry about the babies had overtaken her, and where she was generally fully dressed and ready to go by midday, having already gone shopping for milk early in the morning, this day she was lazing in bed, carefully trying her best to write on the edge of her bed with her quill and ink without making a mess. The journal Morian had given her as encouragement had become a memoir of her own faith and walk with Yahal.

Beautifully warm underneath her new fur blanket, Elann had taken to carrying it around with her wherever she went in the apartment. She couldn't wait for spring, not just because of the warmth it provided, but because she had heard in brief that it was beautiful. All morning she had been either drifting into a much needed sleep, or toying with the artistic writing she had seen before. It wasn't that she couldn't write a letter, but to write beautifully was another.

Her distracted thoughts, remembering the pristine beauty that was Yahal, was interrupted by the rap at her door. Though he didn't notice, she could tell distinctly Noah's knock different from anyone else who ever knocked on her door. Excitement sprung up in her heart and the quill was set into the rest after being cleaned. Her stopper was quickly yet carefully placed into the ink bottle and then her journal was left open to let the ink heavy text to dry. Shooting up from the bed, Elann proceeded as quickly as she was able to throw on her tunic and barefooted, she headed for the door. She opened the door as she finished tying the ribbon her father had given her about her waist.

While she assumed it was Noah, she always answered the door with caution and curiosity. Her eyes were set to automatically connect to his from where he would commonly rest in her door's frame. Connect they did, and as her gaze connected with his, delight sprung up on her face, overtaking all caution. One could very easily venture a guess she hadn't started her day from the state of her clothing and hair, however her face was clean and wide awake.

"Noah," she said said lovingly and held open the door for him, mainly stating his name not out of shock or surprise, but as if she had desired him and had not had a chance to have him yet this day. Her toes curled on the smooth stone that was underfoot in anticipation for his drawing close to her and in preparedness to move should he want to come in.

Every time she saw him now, she felt that love in her heart for him, unsure if it stemmed from only her, from him, or both of them. Either way she knew love was there within for him and she really hoped he was not off on an assignment. He seemed fully clothed and ready for travel, somehow looking better than he did yesterday. She stepped aside to let him in.

"Come in. How are you doing? You look like you are going somewhere."

Patiently he waited to hear the latch of the door sound as it was unlocked, waited to hear the hinges creak in their slight way as the door was parted. The sounds didn't come as quickly as anticipated. He waned in his interest of the door, taking to glancing down the hall and about to the door across the hall from Elann's. There were few others that lived here in the Traveler's Row, he thought. He could not be sure without asking Matilda herself.

As the latch sounded Noah refocused his sights on the doorway as the it parted from the frame. Elann's head peeked through the widening crack. The strands of her hair were seen first followed closely by curious eyes. As if knowing to look for him, Elann's eyes found his relatively quickly and delight was instantly etched onto her face. He smiled back, soft and reserved. She spoke his name in greeting. "Hello," he replied. Before she continued talking she had already began widening the crack in the doorway.

In the same breath she invited him inside, asked his wellbeing, and took note of his attire. At the invitation he nodded, a silent proclamation that he wished to enter her home. As she stepped aside, opening the door enough for him to moved pass, he stepped forward. The chill of winter wasn't on him as he entered. Once inside he surveyed her apartment, as he always did. It was an all too familiar space by now, but his nature forced the action upon him. It was a feral habit placed into him due to his racial necessities.

"I'm all right," he finally said, breaking his silence. He hovered near the entrance of her home, letting his eyes rest in time on her furniture before he turned to face her. "Let's go out," he suggested with a small chirp. "I want to take you the Stallion again. There's usually a new soup around this time in Winter." He studied her face for a reaction. "How's that sound?"

His gear was similar to what he would wear outdoors and yet as he passed her, she could not smell the cold brisk air that would otherwise indicate that he had been out in the falling snow. He had come over dressed as having come from his apartment she figured. Closing the door behind him, she followed as he walked into the room, all to happy to be in his presence. As per normal he evaluated her room. When he turned on heel to face her, she brightened and nodded.

"Okay, that sounds fun! Let me get ready."

Elann had come to trust Noah's judgement of what a good time around Syliras was after their hunting trip. She even planned on going tomorrow to the store and see if she could find a bow or something that would enable her to hunt more effectively. If he wanted to take her out to try soup, she would lay her trust in him that it was worth trying, perhaps even liking. The Stallion. It was a place the two of them had gone together, and while at the time it had not crossed her mind of being anything romantic, now it was a sense of familiarity of the time they had spent developing their friendship with each other, which had ultimately led to where they were now.

Elann moved to her bedroom and taking her brush in her hand, she moved back out to her doorway to see him as she ran it through her hair. He had never seen her get ready, and her being in view of him was almost as if she was giving him access to see something more of her. Her hair had become wild from laying in bed all day, but as she brushed it, it smoothed and the familiar sheen began to return to it.

Calmly she asked him, "Did you sleep well?"

Normally it wasn't very customary for her people to care so much about trivial things like that, and in reality, marriage was just for procreation, but she loved him, cared for him, and for some reason felt inspired not just as a friend to ask him, but as his future bride. It was not even something she often would ask him as a friend, but now she seemed to hold more desire to know just how he felt.

"I've not even started my day. I've been laying in bed under that blanket you've given me. I think it really is the best gift I've ever been given."

Once she had brushed the tangles out of her hair, she went into her bedroom and slightly closed the door, yet did not close it all the way. Still she was hidden behind the door and it indicated she wanted privacy. There she changed into her dark red winter dress and tied the belt around her waist. She then proceeded to reopen her door and brush her hair more, getting it to a slightly wavy state but much straighter than it was.

Elann's acceptance of his suggestion was delightful. It showed, his calm face contorted into a smile accompanied by a nod. Quickly she moved from the front room to her bedroom where she disappeared only to reappear with a brush in hand. She ran it through her hair, wild in appearance compared to its usually tame state when he saw her. It did not phase him, however. She was in a natural state to him, wild hair or not. Her brushing, though, did make him want to better renovate his own hairstyle. It had been several weeks since he last got it cut. The brown strands still shone, though they appeared to be more of a small curly mop atop his head.

"Did you sleep well?" she asked, coursing the brush through her head.

"Yes," he responded, turning towards her hearth. He approached it, stood outside the firebox with his gloved hand curiously pecking at the baubles, jars, and trinkets. "Did you?" The question was asked with a slight turn of his head to view her out of his peripheral, enough to note her position as she remained within the threshold of her bedroom. She continued, stating that she had yet to begin her day. In resemblance to him, she remained in bed. He believed it answered his question satisfyingly.

He was glad to hear his gift to her, the blanket, was being used and that she thought it one of the best gifts she ever had received. Her eyes could no longer be felt on him. He turned on his heel, viewing the partially opened door to her bedroom. A signal for privacy. He yearned to pry further but withheld his inklings, turning instead to inspect the candelabra beside the hearth. By the time Elann came from her room, Noah was twirling the wick of one of the candles in his hand, testing its resistance against the foreign motion. His trial was effectively halted as the red dress was caught in his vision.

He stood straight and looked towards her, viewing her with a neutral expression that turned into an expression of pleasure. "You look nice," he confessed with his eyes following the brush in its motions against the strands of her hair. He canted his head marginally to the side and met her eyes. "Ready to go?" Red was a vibrant color on her. It seemed to accentuate her features. Though he could be biased in his opinion.

Cosmetology was not her strong suit, but she could manage looking a bit nicer for an outing than she was. He turned, and not only that, seemed to brighten upon seeing her. This certainly wasn't what her mother and father had. He never lit up when her mother would walk into the tent. If anything he seemed more frustratingly bossy than before. With Noah and his pleasurable delight in seeing her, gave her something she had never expected.

"Thank you."

He tilted his head slightly, asking if she was ready. While she was close, there were a few things she had to do still.

"Almost."

She moved back out of sight, this time leaving the door mostly open as she was already dressed. There in her room, she opened her drawer, pulled out the cloth her earrings were in and began to put them on. The familiar feel of them brushing up against her neck reminded her of the night he gave them to her and made her smile as she looked into her small mirror. She had seen the beauty of the women of Syliras and though she didn't have makeup, for his sake she now wished she had some. Still, she knew he adored her for who she was and after a light bit of rose water powder rubbed into her chest, she dusted off her hands and sought for her cloak and boots.

"Okay, I'm ready," she said after grabbing and putting them on. She then walked out into the living room. She had slipped on a cloak that was trimmed with fur that looked somewhat warm and then picked up her cowl that was hanging on a kitchen table's chair. After everything was on, she pulled her hair out so that it lay in front of her shoulders and yet behind her ears, and then moved to the door. There she found her money pouch and key and slipped them into a pocket.

"It's been a while since we've been to the Stallion," she voiced with interest to him after closing the door behind them. It was clear she was excited to go by the near spring in her step as they would head down the hall, but as they would eventually breach the door heading outdoors, she would completely change to a more huddled sort of creature; even going so far to seek Noah's arm to keep from slipping on any ice, snow, and to keep her warmer.

"Almost," she said. Patiently Noah nodded but moved to wait by the door. In so many layers - cloak, tabard, over and undertunic - he was getting hot, uncomfortably so. He pressed his shoulder into the wall beside the doorway and leaned. It didn't take long for Elann to finish preparing herself to face the wintry chill that awaited them on their walk to the Rearing Stallion. He drifted into the realm of imagination until he heard her footsteps on the floor. She was ready to go. Out in the hall she voiced that they hadn't been to the tavern in a time. That much was true.

"Not since the Summer," he replied."When you first arrived in Syliras." He remembered the time fondly as it was their first outing together. It was a surprising thing that it was one of many that would follow. "We went to the Welcome Home and played with the children. Then, we went to get something to eat there. You remember?"

Outside the Traveler's Row, cold air immediately met them. Elann's cheerful steps had been dashed away by the frigid, yet calm winds. It was cold and dreary outside, a white cloak of clouds overtook the sky and from them fell delicate flakes of snow. As they walked, Elann's presence crept on him until she could be felt at his side. She took to his arm, bundled herself there beneath his shadow. He slowed his stride at the insistence of his new anchor. There he glanced down at her, admiring her on his arm. He wondered, if their relationship had remained platonic, if she would've huddled there beside him or would she have bore the brunt of the chill a small distance away? It was an answer he would never know for their fates took a different turn.

Noah led the walk and kept to the right of the streets, making so that he walked on the side nearest the center of the roads and Elann walked on the side nearest the buildings. He was walking without a second thought and in quiet for a time letting his subconscious sense of direction guide him to where he wished to go. The traffic around them was light but heavier for instances depending on which intersections they passed through and what businesses occupied the corners. Overall, it was peaceful, to him at least.

"Elann," he spoke finally, turning to round a corner with her, "if I were Benshiran, how would our relationship work? Pretend that you were still with your family for a moment. You said that there would be a bethrothal? What does that mean? Your father would choose a man for you then you'd get married? Is that right?" He looked down at her brieifly before returning his sights and focus on the street and where he was going. There was a well he wanted to show her. He had observed people throwing miza coins in it, making wishes before they did so. He wanted to do that with her.

Did she remember? She remembered most of what was said and done that day. How he looked in the getup that the children dressed him in, children now who were very dear to her. As she walked with him down the steps, she answered. "I do. I even remember wiping makeup from you I believe."

She didn't want to bring up the fact she remembered the little spat they had in the Tavern. Still, it was on her mind. Instead of commenting on it, huddled close to him, loving that she could hold onto him and take what little heat his outfit provided him and use it to keep herself warm.

So it was that they traversed the hazardous snow banks and pathways that led between the buildings until they turned a corner. Down the street was the tavern. Everything was so much different now, and looking at the familiar sign from afar, she was glad they had returned to it.

Noah's voice eked out and he posed an interesting question to her. She had wondered when he would ask it, having even brought up the fact he didn't know much about her culture in one of their conversations. It seemed that the street they were on led them slowly away from the tavern and she wondered where he was leading her.

"My father would have spoken with another father of our same family, the Sons of Rapa, who are priests in our temple. Him and my mother would see whether or not he was good enough for me and would enter into negotiations. My father mainly would size up the man and see if he was strong enough and wealthy enough to provide for me. Then my mother would likely make sure the groom would be good looking enough." She gave him a little squeeze on the arm as if to say he was good looking, then she continued. "You would then give me a Thali...um...solid gold necklace with a golden ornament on the end. That says I am married. Then my family would give you at the least a cow, an ornate weapon of some sort, and a bit of fine fabric."

They moved closer to the well and could see people throwing coins into it. She would continue, but looked curiously to him.

"Why did we come this way? Isn't the tavern back that way?"

Day on the Town

Noah's sights found the well ahead. There was a small gathering around it, several children playing about in the snow. What he assumed to be their mothers were sat on a bench nearby, placed beside a gated, albeit dead, garden. The children perched their curious chins on the well and watched as one dropped a coin down it. Giggling loudly ensued as the coin clunked on the frozen bottom of the opening. A game of tag commenced, a girl shoved a boy into a drift of snow before taking off in the opposite direction. Their mothers seemed not to care, too consumed in their own conversations to react in anyway besides a sideways glance to make sure the boy was okay. When he rose from the pile of snow he patted the flakes out of his dirty blonde head and chased after the girl, whooping and hollering the entire way.

As he watched the game begin Elann's answer had come. The squeeze to his arm brought his attention back to her. He looked down, wondering why she had squeezed his arm so. Perhaps she was done talking? That was not the case. She continued on with the scenario, saying that Noah would gift her a Thani, a golden chain with an ornament attached. The mention of her family gifting him a cow made his snort air from his nose in laughter. It was funny to gift an animal another animal, a cow at that. He liked the idea of being gifted a weapon, however. The fabric was another unnecessary addition in his mind though.

Inquisitively she glanced upwards to him, asking the question as to why they had come towards the well and not turned towards the tavern. "Is it?" Noah asked mockingly. A smile painted across his face, hoping that she understood the sarcasm is his voice. "I hadn't noticed." He met her glance, showing the playful cheer in his eyes. He let her wallow there in the afterglow of his joke until they were closer to the well. The pair of children dashed about, others towing along in the game.

With the arm unheld by Elann he reached over and tapped her, pointing towards the well afterwards. "It's a wishing well. You take out a coin, make a wish, then throw the coin down the well." His eyes lingered on her before he reached for his coin purse, unstringing it from beneath his cloak. "I'll show you." Noah retrieved his arm from Elann's grasp then approached the well. From his coin purse he produced a copper miza which shone dully in the light. "Like this." He bobbed the coin in Elann's vision before muttering his wish then tossing the coin down the opening. He followed it with his eyes, going as far as leaning over the edge of the well's wall to view the miza before it eventually was hidden by darkness. A clunk resounded at the bottom. It was enough to satisfy him for he turned to Elann then gestured back to the well.

"Here," he started, reaching into his coin purse again for another copper coin. He extended the coin towards her. "You try it now."

Elann somewhat could see the children playing about, though her focus was far more upon Noah who was at her side. The children however reminded her of those who played in the orphanage. What would it be like to be the mother of children such as these ones? Would she be one to sit on a bench some day, speaking to someone elses wife? Noah played with her cautious nature, mocking her. A little smug grin passed over her face and she settled all the more closer to him. Strangely what he was doing seemed romantic to her.

As they approached, she looked away from him and instead watched the children jumping around in the snow, giving each other chase. As he tapped her, drawing her attention, she looked to him with brilliant eyes, wondering what he was going to tell her. A wishing well. This was something new to her, something that she understood simply only because of his explanation of it. If Elann had stumbled across it any other day and saw money being thrown down into it, she would have greatly been confused.

She felt the cold air rush between where their bodies had intermingled and she pulled her cloak tight as he showed her what to do. Curious, she too drew close to the wells edge, looking down into its darkness. He produced a single coin and by example, threw it down inside after muttering a wish.

He offered her a coin and she held out her hands for it. There was a bit of excitement on her face as she thought of what to ask for. Really there was so much that she couldn't think for a moment. Finally her mind set on something that brought a smile to her face. After a moment, she cautiously moved her hand out over the large hole and then turned it over, making it fall down into the darkness. When the coin sounded, she looked to him and curiosity came over her.

"What happens now? Do we wait? Do we have to tell what we wished for or is that a secret?"

She returned to standing by his side, close enough for him to easily wrap an arm around her should he wish to. There she wondered if some mystical even would potentially happen, but since she had not heard of the place, she doubted such an event would happen.
