As Sayana reached for her son, she felt exhausted. Yet she wanted to see him. She needed to hold him. But when Devi brought the pale blue form, such a tiny form, the last of her strength broke. Clutching the still babe, she wept openly yet silently. It was as if she no longer had the ability to express her emotions vocally since they were so overwhelming. She placed tender kisses upon the blue head and her eyes blurred with tears. They were a silent river, not to be stopped, and she almost felt as though she would betray the poor thing even if she tried.
The new would-be mother was far too distressed to notice anything that the doctor was doing. A few pinpricks and needlework where she had felt so much pain prior was hardly even worth noticing. Not when she was so consumed in her sorrow.
“I need, I need to keep him. Just… just a little while.” She managed to speak in a cracked voice. The Eypharian held her dead son close within layers of arms. She needed time to resolve her grief and she needed to be the one to put him to rest.
“Devi--” The Eypharian sat up quickly and gripped the doctor’s forearm with one of her hands. Sayana’s eyes were red and pain filled them. Something inside her said she should thank the doctor. She was alive when she might not have otherwise been. Yet the words wouldn’t come out. It was too hard. And with so much sorrow… The Eypharian gave a gentle squeeze of the doctor’s arm and then slumped back down upon the bed in exhaustion. The dead infant was still nestled in her arms and her eyes closed with only sleep to await her.
