80th day of Summer 512 AV
The people were getting restless. They were waiting for their knight. The knight to beat up, the knight to beat up on and the knight to take bets on like some fighting pug. Bob was foolish to start announcing that there was a knight accepting duels by anyone. Even more foolish to say that he knew the knight's reputation. An honorable knight that followed Tyveth? Hah! What a lie. Well Bob already knew for so long that knights were normally liars, like him but that was besides the point. He was not going to face the consequences for it. Not when the unranked knight deserved it more for preaching stupid things in Zeltiva. He would have preferred someone like the Grandmaster if it was really necessary.

So who was Bob to not oblige? He could not help himself. It was in his nature. Running back to camp where he knew the mercenaries and ex cons were he announced on the way "if you think that the knight's have wronged you, there is one willing to prove himself just outside the gates at noon today!' and "lets try to put the grief of those who were taken by the storm" which he means the knights. "behind us. All thanks to a knight that wants to give us the show we all want to see" which is the akalak getting beaten up again...and again...and again... If that did not persuade any of them, Bob would just put it bluntly. With a trailing laugh, the joke was that "a knight is going to get beaten today in his own game!" He already lost one, what was another?

Back at the camp, another audience, another hook. Bob thought the best way to get them to go is to say "its time to prove to those knights" who always thought that they were better than everyone else "that there are other people more skilled than them" and who was going to do it? Obviously them when "you gotta beat him in the duel for all of us!" Bob said looking to the biggest man in the place. If not then maybe "you...you...you..." which were the smaller people in succession. Heck if they do it right then "maybe you will prove yourselves to their superiors and..." dare he say it? "get a chance to take their place as a fully fledged knight!" Bob would not know why they would want that restrictive post but it has to come "complete with benefits" right? He was not making any promises but he was just voicing out what people should be thinking about the duel, or what he thinks that the people should be thinking.

"Sigh..." too many promises, none that can be kept especially when the knight was a no show. Maybe he skipped it altogether? Maybe he was laughing it out with his knight friends about how he beat the Zeltivans in his duel that never happened. Bob was not going to profit off anything if there was nothing to take bets on! Worse still if the ones he gathered decided that they needed an outlet and chose Bob to be it. He had to think, fast. What was he going to do now? Maybe he should just run...but his reputation will be ruined, or he could run and find another knight. Yes...another knight, thats it! Bob ran wildly around the camp after telling everyone that "I am going to fetch our star" and that would be "Marcus! How would you like to show everyone the skills of the best knight?" before dragging the knight along with him not wanting to give him a chance to think exactly what was going on and voice out any objections until they got to the gathering.

If Markus asked anything else on the way all Bob would tell him is just that "I know you are better than any unranked knight but I don't think anyone else cares" which was true. Bob would have more confidence in someone he knew than some idiot preaching on the street. All that will be seen at the grounds but unfortunately Bob was too worried to actually make sure. The akalak could be at any one of the entrances to Zeltiva but who needed him? Bob had Markus now.

Larknas had asked the priest for a favor to allow him to take at noon so that he would watch the duel he hoped it would be interesting it wasn't so often that a fight would break and one could watch it least not in the taverns he ussualy was at.

He ran a bit by the streets towards the gate.It was there he saw a couple of people had gathered hrm dint expect so many people would actually be here.
One the men there a burly looking thug spoke to him "Hey you the knight we waiting for?" asked one there "Idiot does he look like a knight all scrawny besides where the armor and sword" the other man laughed and Larknas wondered if he missed the punchline "sorry about that we just got a tiny itchy waiting for the knight some took bets on it wanna take one" Larknas smilled "Propably not i dont have much luck in gambling" the man shruged "Suit yourself i will be around here if ye change your mind".

Larknas wondered how much he would wait, but he knew that it should be worth it.....propably.

Showdown at high noon (Markus, Open to three)

Postby Markus Andres on August 25th, 2012, 10:23 pm

Markus was standing in the camp site, body covered in his knightly armor, except for his head. Eyes closed and his face looked intensely focused. His mind was set on moving djed around within him. His desire was not to expend it, but rather to hold on to it long enough for him to move it to a new spot in his body. The real test however, was to keep himself from getting too excited with the power he was willing around. The first part was relatively easy enough. Just took a little focus and ti- someone was dragging him. Markus opened his eyes and looked at the boy-man who was dragging him. Markus' brows furrowed as he looked at the midget. Instantly recognising him. For Bob was certainly unique in appearance... and mind. What was he even asking, display of skill? Markus shrugged.

'Why not'

"Errr, sure." Markus grabbed his shield as they passed by it. His sword was already sheathed at his side. "So, what is going on?" He said as he slid his left arm into the straps on the shield. He tilted his head a little at Bob's response. His pride swelled a little at the compliment to his skills, but Markus had a feeling Bob would say that to any man who was off to fight on his behalf. Markus eyes furrowed again when he considered the midget's words. Was he off to fight another knight? An unranked knight more specifically?

"I won't fight if I am facing another knight. If so, you will have to get out of your own mess." He said as he followed Bob. Confident that he could defeat whoever or whatever Bob had made a gamble with. For as Bob had said and Markus wholeheartedly agreed with: He was the best knight.

Showdown at high noon (Markus, Open to three)

Postby Imass on September 1st, 2012, 4:41 am

Imass stood at the gates of Zeltiva. He armored to the teeth and was ready for martial combat. His gauntleted hand rested on the pommel of his sword, which was still sheathed at his side. Fuming hatred escaped his body like an aura of pure aggression. His dark side had been cooped up for so long, that violent thoughts were the only ones that filled his mind. Nothing else mattered now. Bloodlust was all he thought of now.

People were already starting to gather, for the news had spread fast especially with his demonstration at the bar earlier. The first challenger approached. It was a grizzled sailor littered with tribal tattoos from a far away land.
Imass closed his eyes and breathed. A shiver went down his spine as the excitement cause by bloodlust went through his body. Raising both arms wide, he beckoned for all to gather, “No more words! Let’s let the swords decide our fates!”

The Akalak took another deep breath and settled into his fighting stance. He held his shield close to his heart and clasped his sword with all his might. He stared his opponent down with piercing eyes. The window’s to his soul where wide open, he would not let anyone best him in combat. Losing was not an option.

Imass circled the tattooed sailor and people formed a massive circle around them. Cheers and boos began to ring in his ears, but he ignored all of this. He was totally focused on the opponent in front of him. The sailor was wielding two cutlasses and grinning wildly. He would never win against Imass’ determination and discipline.

Holding his shield close to his ear, the Knight would use the round weapon to strike and cause openings for his sword. Imass pressed forward, one foot in front of the other. The sailor sprinted forward with reckless ambition. Imass planted his feet on the floor and established his base.

The fight begun. The sailor swung haphazardly at Imass’ sword arm shoulder. The Akalak took two horizontal steps to his right, but never clicked heels. He tried to keep his base. Leaning his broadsword against the rim of his shield, the cutlass smashed right into the juxtaposition of both weapons sending vibrations through his arm.

Imass instinctively tried to break the man’s attack by sliding his broadsword out and hacking at the man’s arm. The sailor had no choice, but to bring his second cutlass across his body to deflect the blow. Excited from his success, Imass swung the rim of his shield haphazardly only to find his attack dodged by the sailor, who had backpedaled out of the way.

The sailor was no coward though and swung at Imass’ shield arm. The Knight raised his shield in protest as he tried to reset his footwork. The sailor’s cutlass got caught on Imass’ shield boss, which would normally be a perfect opportunity for a rim bash, but before the Akalak could act the second cutlass was already being aimed at his shoulder. Imass raised the flat of his blade in defiance.

The two struggled in a dead lock for a moment, and then the Akalak was forced to break free. A sheet of sweat poured from his face as he began to circle his opponent again. His face was full of focus and demonic anger. It was a controlled angers though, not a roaring fire but white hot embers.
Suddenly, to everyone’s surprise including Imass, the tattooed sailor dropped his weapons on the floor and surrender, “I didn’t realize you were serious about fighting to the death. Screw this!”

Imass spat and snarled. He had no more words to say. Looking down the lane he saw Markus Andres walking towards the crowd gathered...

Showdown at high noon (Markus, Open to three)

Curse it all! Imass came too early and was already in the thick of things while Bob was bringing along Markus. Hopefully the gambler has not lost out on his opportunity because of the hotheaded akalak's display scaring the spectators from the rare chance to beat up on a knight. This along with the fact Bob could no longer rely on Markus to fight another of his peers even one causing problems far from home like Imass was a problem to Bob's plans. With no one to fight, how was he going to profit from the morning's event?! Nearing the center of the duel site Bob purposely slowed down his pace, not being sure if Markus would show any enthusiasm to challenge the akalak beating down on poor, innocent Zeltivans but hoping that allowing the knight to take in the scene would help. Would there actually be a way to change Markus' mind? Taking his time until he reached Imass, Bob made a show of looking past the imposing figure of the akalak while he surveyed the crowd suggesting that perhaps Imass meant nothing here. Why Imass when Bob had the privilege to introduce to the Zeltivan crowd, "a great knight and good friend of mine you've been waiting for, Ser Markus Andres!" after taking a deep breath to make sure his words will reach most if not the whole crowd.

Already during that time Bob was working to spin things to his favor. Realizing that the two were not going to fight, Bob was going to have to coax the intimidated crowd to try another challenge. From when he was preparing to introduce Markus earlier, Bob already started gathering djed into himself like the breath he needed to give his words strength to reenergize the crowd. That was what this crowd needed. Energy. Working on the pride of the Zeltivans he asked "I can't believe you lost to this..this akalak! How are you going to contest this great example of strength and honor?" gesturing to Markus. As he searched among the crowd for someone that has not already dissolved into a quivering mass of cowardice because of Imass, Bob gathered a little more djed into himself until what, he felt would be a comparable amount to match up with the big brutish sailor-thug-shipwright looking person he spotted. Asking randomly "you? You? Or maybe you?" until he settled on his target with a loud "how about you?!" Bob let the djed out together with his words to do its job, to give the man energy as it settled into his mind and hopefully ignited his spirit in a flash that the knights were going a little too far. Maybe it was too much energy as Bob found himself forced to stumble back when the man let out a roar. Continuing to lead him on Bob said "it looks like we have a true man here" slowly backing a safe distance away towards Markus.

Continuing to ignore Imass who dared have his fun so far without him, Bob told the pair to "go over the ground rules" since he was not too sure if Markus would have a duel to the death himself and headed into the crowd to work them over into a betting frenzy. The duel itself was not going to be important for him since all he needed was Markus to display enough strength to match himself up with Imass in the eyes of the crowd and get into the real betting. "The human or the akalak. Who do you think can beat more people before being taken down themselves?" Obviously Bob did not expect the men to risk themselves with fighting, not without some incentive and hinted that "there may be a prize at the end for the person who actually gets to beat one of them first" which might come from whatever money that Bob would be able to gain. After keeping some for himself and his partner of course but that would have to wait until later when he was sure about the results. While Bob had no doubts that Markus that was at least a real knight would win, there was something about the akalak's blood thirst that worried him a little. A little like Xalet on one of his bad days.

Nothing that Markus couldn't handle Bob assumed but he was disappointed when he took a glance back at the pair. Expecting them to actually go over the ground rules, Bob was not happy that Markus would take a place by the akalak at the center of the ring. After so much work trying to make it seem that they will be competing against one another Markus had to make it look like the two were buddies. The people were probably angry enough if they already heard about what Imass did in the morning. How much more angry would they be if they see the knights together like this or heaven forbid, the entire thing rigged by comrades in arms? Bob tried to calm himself down in his worries as he struggled to continue saying "ah...look at Ser Markus now. Even to an...opponent he will competing against, he is able to show respect and extend his hand in friendship. Such an honourable knight. An shining example indeed!" And then Bob thought to himself that this might actually work. Keep reminding the people Zeltiva about the knights and their precious honor and maybe, just maybe that reputation will overflow and extend over to him. An honor that will make people dismiss his attempts at trickery and subterfuge as this little game of his continues today and maybe even a little bit longer after he leaves Zeltiva.

However it was probably honor, specifically Markus' honor, that made Bob's jaw drop the moment he said it. It was all and good that the big guy Bob pinpointed with his hypnotism stepped forward but "a friend...a two on one...? I mean I know you're bu..." but what was Bob saying? He felt, no he knew his doubt would mean the end of it. Right now this provided a great opportunity for the man. One that would be a great gamble with a great reward if he did it right. Composing himself, he turned towards the majority of the crowd, the one behind the man that challenged Markus and said "I know you like a fair fight and all but are you sure you want to even it out this much? You might even lose this time you know" and while it seemed like what he said was directed to his friend, Bob had every intention of his words being overheard by the crowd and to stay in their minds once the fight began with one, two, three or however many opponents. Bob was already counting that time, the odds that he may use to sway the educated Zeltivans around. Considering the reputation of the knights, how Bob has compared Markus to Imass maybe a one on one should be a 17 to 1 odds. Actually given the size of the opponent, maybe 15 to 1. No point in questioning how Bob was actually doing the math in his head but he was thinking to himself. Multiplying by two should mean a division of two when it comes to Markus for a 8 to 1. 7, If Bob wanted to make sure he pays out less if Markus loses and...was there anything else to consider?

Nevertheless having done the calculations, the greedy Bob Barton left Markus to his battle as he set out for his own victory. Giving periodic remarks of the battle such as "look at the way they are sizing up one another" and "see just how Ser Markus prepares his strike" as well as "would you have thought the two of them would get into a flanking position against the knight? What an advantage!" Bob tried his best to narrate the fight to make it seem that both sides were pretty evenly matched despite how people saw it in front of them. Of course he was going to want more people betting against Markus and normally tried to slip in a comment or two as he was with them including the usual "didn't expect you to side with a knight after all they did the last few seasons" or "you call yourself a Zeltivan? Show some pride" and "thank the gods Markus is no Imass or we'd risk a mob again !" Fingering the money in his hands, Bob continued to coax the crowd into picking sides in the fight and with side being chosen maybe putting even more into the bets.

And at the end of it all, Bob gasped along with a few others as the men were on the ground. Bob was watching. Waiting to witness if Markus was truly as presented to the rest of the people. Whether he was more noble than Imass that has belittled an outstanding member of Zeltiva earlier in the day and when Markus sheathed the sword, Bob sighed in relief saying "give the man a hand. Really, Ser Markus showed us all today what a knight is" compared to the display in the morning. Going up to the two people that were on the round Bob gave them the directions to his Uncle Marny, one of Zeltiva's medical practitioners in case they wanted to use him and then headed up to Markus saying once again "Ser Markus Andres. The winner in today's contest because he beat not one opponent, but two and at the same time too! So let us all go back, have some kelp beer and celebrate on the victory of..." what did Markus admit earler when he was goading his two opponents on? Oh right, "...a fellow Zeltivan that has come home after successfully joining up with one of the more famous organizations in the region. He even got to show us a bit of his accomplishments!" Pretty much a good way to end the festivities as the knight called it. Bob got to make some mizas and maybe help the strained relationship between the two cities a little because of this new thing he found about his friend Markus. That Markus was from Zeltiva before he became a knight.

Showdown at high noon (Markus, Open to three)

Postby Markus Andres on November 2nd, 2012, 1:55 am

Markus' jaw tightened as he saw Imass on the field of battle they were headed for, he felt his eagerness to jump into battle. Had Bob dragged him out there to fight with Imass? Had it been any other knight, Markus would have declined beforehand. But Imass? Markus really wanted to test the mettle of the fellow knight. He had wanted to do that ever since the two had fought side by side during the attack of the Yukmen. But it appeared Imass was in his own struggle against some citizens of Zeltiva. Schooling them in the art of battle. Real battle. Not fighting as performed by brigands and pirate sailors. He seemed to be handling it fine by himself, Markus need not worry nor hurry to his aid. Probably a part of Bob's never ending schemes. But Markus was surprised by even this. How on earth had he managed to do this on such short notice.

Markus had probably played with many of these people when he had been a kid. A powerful primal rage surged within him at the sight of this. Many in the crowd seemed to be in the same age group as himself. Although they looked a little older. A little more withered from a tougher and less nourished life. Markus took pity on the miserable lot. Been unlucky to not escape Zeltiva for a better life with the knights. Like he had. He cast a glance over his shoulder. Watching the city. Would be better off if it was subjugated to Syliras rather than under its own incompetent rule. Petty mages and greedy merchants. Hardly fit nor honourable enough for self-rule. The guidance of Sylir and the Windoak would be to their benefit, no doubt.

"Well met Ser Imass!" Markus said loudly as he got closer. "I see you have started the festivities without me." A confident grin on his lips, but he stared hard at every man present. Markus felt certain he could handle each and every one of these miserable curs. He hesitated a step. Surprised at his own loathing for the city and her citizens he had left all those years ago. It felt as if every honourable notion withered in light of his burning hatred. He felt like the uncontrollable chaos he had been back in his childhood. But he shrugged it away, or tried to, as he continued into the ring. Looking at the challengers. Those who wished they could best the knights. Not even on his worst day would they dare dream of such glory. Markus snorted at the cowards who dared not challenge him. Markus back was straight, he was standing as tall as he could. But beside the Akalak... They had seen the Akalak in action and Markus surely looked less impressive and capable standing next to the tower of an Akalak. But it looked like some reacted to Bob's goading and although Markus did not show it outwardly, he was mightily pleased with the publicity the midget was bringing him. His pride and ego so easily sated. A brave man stepped forth to challenge Markus.

The large warrior turned to scrutinize the challenger. He had more spine than his friends, that much was certain. Long and wild black hair. Thick. His beard full and his eyes bloodshot. He was big for his size, Markus would give him that. He was tall and burly, muscles from hard work toiling. Judging from his choice of weapon, cleaving wood for Zeltiva. His left held a crude axe of some sort. It looked worn from years of use. But the man held it comfortably. What a fine warrior Bob had goaded into fighting him, this man would certainly be a challenge for the young knight, if the knight in question was sleeping. Markus saw past the man, saw a equally pissed looking man, equally eager to fight. Markus motioned for him to join his friend.

"Why don't you have a friend help you. Make this a little more exciting. You heard me boys, two on one. With Sylir and Wysar as my witnesses, I promise that proud ser Imass will not intervene." Markus boasted. Confident with himself. The two would not stand a chance against the well-trained knight. They exchanged glances and seemed to be hesitating. Markus could not have that! "I offer a two against one, and no one steps out? I thought the city I once called home produced braver men." It had been too long since Markus had let his mouth run. Let his anger flow freely as he spoke. It felt liberating. It had the desired effect.

The other brute appeared beside the first one, goaded by Markus' taunting. Markus tilted his head. Neither of the men were as tall as he, but they were as large physically. No doubt those two were used to intimidating people with their huge size. Had Markus not smiled as much as he did, people would be as frightened of him, for his size, as regular folks were of those two. Markus contemplated raising the stakes by adding another enemy, but something about the newcomer had Markus worried for a moment. The way he held an equally worn axe. Woodcutters axe. There was a world of difference between their grips. The second one might actually know how to use the axe for more than chopping wood. Markus would not be surprised if two were brothers. Or at least related by blood somehow. Markus' last long battle had been against the Yukman horde on the way to the city. Although he did not think highly of these curs, he knew they would provide more of a challenge than mere Yukman ... At least they wouldn't be saying Yuk all the time. Already a huge improvement there.

"The name is Markus Andres, Syliran knight." Neither of the men responded. Probably a clever move to not identify themselves to a knight.

Markus noticed something as the two advanced, their courage bolstered by numbers, but he noticed that they both were left handed. That was odd. Very odd. Markus had fought a couple of left handed people. It had always been quite interesting experience. Fighting two of them at the same time? Excellent! Markus' grin betrayed his eagerness for this battle. Markus hand went down to his hilt and he drew the bastard blade and rolled with his shoulders. Loosening them up for the battle. His right foot slid back. Left side leading. Shield protecting his left side. But Markus knew from experience that fighting a left handed man, often meant that his shield was used more for offensive purposes than defensive. Markus' legs were slightly bend. Muscles tense. Waiting for the opportune moment to strike at the dynamic duo. He held his sword in a semi high guard. Ready to chop at the first person who got within range. But the two knew a little about tactics. At least more than Markus would have credited them with a moment earlier. They split up and carefully sidestepped each their way around him. Keeping their axes in a defensive posture. It was quite odd to see them advance so defensively with a weapon... tool... that Markus considered purely offensive minded. Against the far more versatile bastard sword. Markus recognized their tactic right away, as a somewhat competent tactician himself he considered their strategy good. Flank him and force him to either turn his back to one, or constantly fight on both angles. A shame Markus would not himself get trapped in such an unfavourable position. Even more unfortunate that he wasn't the defensive type of fighter who might allow them to put him in that situation. Markus' feet suddenly pushed off, his entire body seemingly moving in the direction of the one on the right. His sword down by his side, ready to stab. The man reacted by stepping back, create room so he had more time to react to Markus' attack.

An attack that would never reach him.

Markus' body suddenly lunged in the opposite direction. The second fighter having thought Markus' back wide open had stepped forward to capitalize on the defenceless knight. But nope. Markus' feign was a success. Pleased that his misdirection had worked so excellently, Markus had trouble hiding his smirk. The man's eyes went wide with surprise when he suddenly was facing the knight directly. His raised axe tried to descend on Markus, but Markus was too close, having not wasted the initiative, he had covered the distance. Markus' powerful left arm slammed his shield upwards. Directly into the elbows of the man. A howl of pain escaped the man's lips. His arms thrown up above his head and the axe almost left his grip. Impressive that he managed to hold onto the farmers tool. In almost perfect timing, Markus' sword hand flashed forward, exploiting the gap his shield created. Working in almost perfect unison his shield and sword. The cold steel connected with the man's exposed ribcage. The man would let a curse escape his lips as well as a lung's worth of air. Probably having thought himself impaled upon the bastard. Not so, Markus had subtly reversed his grip when he had turned to face the second man. It was the pommel of his blade he had carefully jabbed into the man's ribs. Those ribs were probably broken. Markus felt no remorse. For he could not linger, there was a foe more he had to deal with, but he had to finish this man for good. He hammered the shield forward. Knocking the man further back and onto his bum.

Markus spun around to his left. Shield leading. Surprised to find he didn't knock aside an attack. The man had apparently not expected Markus to incapacitate his friend so quickly and brutally and had not been so eager to go into a duel with the knight. Not alone at least. Markus advanced on the man and he stepped back and tried to get some distance between the two. The man looked desperate, but did not flee. That impressed Markus and redeemed these men in his eyes. Holding his axe over his head. Ready to chop. It would be easy to make this man make his move. Easier to read his attack. Markus lunged forward. The man defended himself quite well with an overhead chop at Markus' frame. The axe never made it to Markus. His sword was raised and knocked it aside with seemingly ease. The axe stopped a couple of inches above ground as the man finally managed to stop its momentum, by then he tried to retreat. Markus would not wait for the man to get ready again. Markus stepped forth. His shield struck the man hard on his shoulder and face as he foolishly turned to look at his shield. The man stumbled back and finally fell to the ground. Markus looked at the pair of men. He outclassed these two 'fighters' by several leagues. As he had expected. Those men had relied on their large stature to win. He would probably have been like these men had his father not signed him up with the knights.

... It would have been a wasted life.

"Sorry boys, it was not your day." He said as he sheathed his sword. "You should see to your friend. I think I might have broken a couple of his ribs. Should get him to a doctor or a healer. Whatever this city got." Markus might have been angry with this city for reminding him of a past he'd rather forget, but he was not unkind nor was he cruel of nature. But he did not feel any remorse for his actions, the men had been eager to fight him. But still, he reached into a pouch on his belt and produced a silver Miza. "I hope this helps to persuade a healer. I should not have been so rough." Markus said with a small bow of his head to the two men. Although they did not seem pleased to have been defeated, their glares were not as hard as before. Even though he'd much rather have the men flee in terror before him. He was a knight and he could not have people think of their order as arrogant and mindless brutes. They had an honourable reputation to uphold. He looked around at the crowd, many of them had lost their lust for fighting Markus. Some looked to Imass to have their lust for fighting sated. Markus pondered why they were so eager to fight the knights. Even after seeing Markus tear those two apart. Why were they so angry? ... It was rather strange.

For now he would stand back and let Imass have some fun. He might get to see a good fight or two.

Larknas :
Your ledger is not up to date, update it and PM me for your grade.

Notes :
Don't sweat the NPCs Markus, the thread happened a long time ago and you didn't appear to use them more than necessary. I'm more of a magic guy myself but I'll tell you that your combat descriptions absolutely took my breath away. Its enough to cause me to get interested in teaching my PC a physical combat skill and that is saying something. :)

Shame the thread was never finished.

If you have any comments/questions/concerns about your grade please PM me and we will work something out.

Keep on writing!
