Trivial Question on Mizaharian Equine Physiology

Postby Abashai on December 11th, 2009, 6:25 pm

I like to rp as realistically as one can in a completely original fantasy world. So, as if you all aren't busy enough, I have a trivial question...

Since it is Winter, do Desertbred horses living outside of Eyktol grow a winter coat of fur? :)

Well, lets think of it this way...

Arabians - who were born in the desert and designed to be hardy in really harsh conditions get as furry and such as the other horses who are from colder climates. The reason is the photoperiod (ratio of daylight to darkness) change in combination with temps and humidity cause hair growth. So... horses being horses, I suspect they'd shag out like the rest of them though I would think they would be more susceptible to winter cold than other animals more habitualness to it would be. Your poor desertbred would probably be freezing her rump off, sulky, and not loving the snow at all... though in the end she'd be fine with an extra blanket, and extra food to keep up with the energy she spends keeping her body warm.

Also, bear in mind, the desert can be exceptionally cold in the evening and there is actual sleet in Yahebah during the winter months. (This weather is based more on an ancient Palestine than Sahara model). So, while snow would be a bit stressful, cold is not unheard of.

Or what Goss said.
