River Flower

Amunet had pulled the night shift. It happened in cycles as the staff was rotated through the night shift as the River Flower stayed manned all through the hours. It was late spring and they had a lot of refugees now. They also had a lot of pregnant women amongst the Pavilions who have started to congregate and move with Endrykas if nothing more than for the River Flower so their pregnant women can give birth with aid before they moved their pavilions and herds away to better grazing. This was the life of the Drykas and the flux of their city.

The night was rather quiet, she liked it. Drak slept off the way and towards the back with Camile and Leia stayed close to her. Shetanae was still recovering from the ordeal of the Bears. Her knee had over extended rather good. Gertrude and Gary, the two donkeys happily grazed with the opal clan herds. Not like anyone didn’t know they were her donkeys, being one of a very few who had pack donkeys. Amunet found them really useful in carrying her belongings. She provided them with care and love. Those two provided her with a service that was invaluable. The donkeys enjoyed a good life and didn’t complain too much. They did get stubborn to hoof trims and baths but all in all those two had it almost as good as any strider.

The red headed sister of Drak’s checked on the sleeping six year old before she made her rounds. The collar bone still ached a bit but the rounds were light duty. The girl was banned from heavy lifting for the first two weeks after the bear incident, but now she had snuck it in here and there lifting items that were not too heavy. The girl did pay attention to the slight twinge that told her body to stop or it was going to be a bad thing. It told her how far she was healing. The girl went to wash her hands well before starting to walk the run of tents that was referred to as the River Flower. The young lady kept her foot falls as light as she could manage. She thought maybe she should wear lighter slippers than her boots, but she was so used to boots that slippers seemed impractical in an odd sort of way.

The first patient was recovering from a near drowning. The patient had swallowed a bit too much water into the lungs. It was touch and go with this one. Her healing was mitigating some of the infection and teas where implemented to break up the building catarrh from the respiratory infection that resulted from water on the lungs. Nehrar said pneumonia most likely was the issue. Her hand went to his forehead as it felt a little warm. It seemed fevers liked to spike in the middle of the night. The compassionate girl went to the side table to spread the mint and eucalyptus ointment on the chest to help beathing. The herbs that Sadara had set out, she made a tea out of and gave it to the patient to drink. In the meantime, while the patient drank the tea, Amunet made sure the pillows were in a recline so that the patient could breathe easier. Nehrar and Sadara said that with this type of respiratory infection, a person can drown in their own fluids.

Once the sheet was folded on the chest and the patient was back to sleep, the red head moved to the next cot. She checked the bandages as it seemed time to change bandages. The girl moved the lantern closer to the cot. The patient woke up and smiled at her as she checked on him. Old warrior was injured on the last watch patrol. The girl patted the man’s hand as she went to get a couple of basins, bandages and items to change the bandages on his leg. Her little fingers was no nonsense as she folded back the sheet that covered him. He was a large man and like the rest of the watch he didn’t care to be still. This one had the grace to at least be tolerant of the medical ruling.

Amunet smiled at him as she sat on a stool next to the cot. She used scissors to cut the bandages along the ‘loose’ portion of the bandage. “This might sting but I will be as gentle as possible. “ The girl said softly to the warrior. The diamond nodded as he took a couple of practiced breaths. He was no stranger to pain but the red head felt it necessary to warn the older warrior. Very carefully she started to peel the bandage. The careful red head was as gentle as she possibly can as she removed the blood caked bandages from the wound. Her practiced eye looked at the wound. It was pinky and the signs of new flesh mending. “It is looking better.” The girl whispered as the soiled bandages were deposited on the ground.

A little bit of astringent was added to warm water as she used a linen cloth to gently pat the wound to moisten it. Ever so gently, the compassionate lady advanced the wet cloth across the wound to clean it. The dried blood bit by bit was cleaned up and the wound was looking less like a meat market on display and more like a nicely healing wound. The girl reached for the salve they used and spread it on the stitched up wound. The man lifted up his knee so she could get the new bandage wrapped around the thigh. It was good to see he was trying to move it, but she cautioned against sudden movements. “Its looking much better. Nehrar may let you go to your pavilion under the provision of light duty.” The girl whispered to him.

The man said his thanks and wondered why this compassionate healer who he himself had to fish out of the Grass on more than one occasion was still unmarried. The rumors were contradictory and certainly most of them didn’t fit as she cared for his wounds with a tenderness that was not common with their harsh way of life. Amunet finds that there isn’t enough tenderness or kindness. Quite possibly, that was what gave her the most trouble. Why did she think so differently? The girl changed the man’s sheets to something cleaner as the cleaning and the wound had seeped onto the ones he was on. He was partially ambulatory as the both of them were careful not to pop a stitch while she changed his bedding. Once the man was back into bed to rest, Amunet gathered the soiled bedding and items used to change the bandages to clean things up before moving on. The man squeezed her hand quietly and The healer/doctor patted his hand as she moved away.

The industrious girl moved to the ledger scroll to notate her treatment for the night and findings so the morning crew would know what had been performed already. The quill dipped into the ink and then she dragged the tip forward to deal with the excess before laying it to the parchment of the scroll. There was no need to hurry as her slight curved lettering jotted down her actions this evening. One of the attendants whispered into her ear as the healer/doctor nodded and put her quill down carefully so that it didn’t roll and streak the scroll. The attendant seemed to be urgent as they both hurried their steps along up to the front triage area. The flash of red hair was all some would see pass as the closer she got to where the emergency was at.

One of the watch had been ambushed by a night lion and thrown from his horse and into a deadfall. One of the branches had speared his leg. The others of his patrol took care of the night lion as the rest of that pride scattered. He was gritting his teeth at the pain and he was pale. The wound was not dripping as much as she thought it was upon first inspection which means he wasn’t loosing blood. “Alright get him into that room and someone go wake up Nehrar while I get started. I may need help with this. “

One of the attendants nodded and scurried out of the tent, while the other assistant started getting hot water, linen, astringents and other tools. It would be Nehrar’s call if this leg can be saved but Amunet would do everything she can right now. “easy. “ Her soft voice would slide along the pain and trauma filled eyes in a way that was like a gentle breeze on a heated stone. In those ticks that her gold shimmered light blue eyes met the watchman’s hazel eyes there was an easing there. “Relax as much as possible, we will do all we can. “ He was going to need something for pain.

‘Rak’keli, by the grace granted me, may it flow to this man.’ Her eyes had closed briefly as she prayed to her Goddess as she hoped fervently they can save this man. The girl took a deep breath as she focused on the protruding piece of wood from the man’s leg. It seemed to be dangerously near the main blood vessel on the inner thigh. Amunet went to grab one of Sadara’s mixes for pain. The dosage was written on the label as she carefully measured the herb mixture in a cup. The Healer knows it contains Valerain and that was about it. One of these days she would need to spend time with Sadara learning the herbalist knowledge. The hot water was added to the mixture and allowed to steep as the girl wanted this in the man’s system before they started working with his leg and that piece of tree jutting out of his thigh. It was soon down the man’s gullet and he was soon dozing off.

The red headed doctor/healer started to clean the thigh to see the entry and exit part. Using the help of the assistants, this may take a scalpel to get this limb out of his thigh. “He isn’t going to like this.” The girl mumbled. Not to mention, the amount of foreign debris they would have to clean out. “Do we have enough people to keep him pinned down?”

“I think so, why?” The assistant asked.

“This is likely going to need some muscle. Get a couple from his patrol to see if they can help hold him down. This is going to hurt worse than he already is.” This gentle girl went to the head to open his eyes and see how dilated they were and to check his breathing. This told her how much of a hold the drug in the tea had on the man. The others from his patrol came in, including his Travhek.

“How is he?” He asked cautiously.

“We gave him something for pain. “ The girl motioned to the side as he came over “Im going to straight out say this as directly as possible. The limb is entrenched so much in the muscle tissue that it will need to be cut out. If I pull it out, it may very well sever the artery there and the man will die or worse, lose his leg. “ Amunet knew enough about the watch to understand there were worse things than death itself.

The experienced warrior nodded, understanding what she was telling him. “What do you need from us?”

“To hold him down, the pain medicine we gave him wont be enough. Him thrashing around will cause similar issues as pulling the tree limb out. “ Her expression again was direct and kind. There was no gentle way around this.

“Lets do this then.” The warrior nodded and like most watchmen, wanted to get straight to work.
Nehrar had entered the scene and Amunet provided a succinct briefing as he nodded to her prognosis. The scalpel was in her hand. “It’s dangerously close to that vein there, if it hasn’t damaged it already. “ The elder Doctor sighed as the man may be lucky to have his leg after this.

Amunet sighed with relief as the knowledge of Nehrar was there. She didn’t want to think about circumstances if it wasn’t there. The watchmen took their positions to hold the man down as Amunet had the leg elevated up. The hope was to bring it out from its entry point. She paused a tick or two as she took a deep breath and then just as suddenly made the incision on the exit part. The skin had to be loosened in the caught up nubs and bark. The man came alive and screamed. Nehrar was on the good leg keeping it down a he nodded to the Healer. The healer knew she could mitigate the infection but the foreign object had to be removed.

She swallowed and took a tick to keep going as the wood was loosened from its hold on the exit wound. The assistant brought the leg up so she could cut at the underneath part. The man started screaming and trying to thrash as it took all of them to keep him reasonably still to cut the entry wound with enough incisions so she could start backing the limb out. The man kept screaming and straining against his fellow watchmen who were talking to him to hold his ground and other masculine things men needed to hear to work through the pain. Something like that. Amunet was not paying a whole lot of attention to it. The limb was slowly being brought out in a bloody mess cutting at muscle it hung up on as she went. Her little hands and fingers were used to advantage on this. There was a lot of blood.

Nehrar released the other leg as the man had passed out. He had his hands there to help stave the flow as he looked in it. “let’s irrigate the puncture wound, clean it as best as we can and tack stitches. It will need to be left to be able to drain. Any trapped fluid will be a breeding ground for infection. You will need to be on call for this one and im not even sure we can save the leg yet. “ The man said with a sigh as Amunet nodded and went to wash her hands of the blood that went from hand to forearm. The girl used her shoulder and upper arm to wipe her eyes and take a deep breath. The air smelt of fresh blood and it lingered in her nostrils as the assistants brought more water.

A basin was placed over the puncture wound as she poured clean water over it and into it to irrigate it. The Basin was emptied and replaced as the red head kept irrigating it. It seemed to become less bloody after several changes before she used an astringent in the last cleansing. The little lady took a moment to close her eyes and gather her composure before suturing tacks in both the entry wound and exit wound. Before she bandaged anything her hand went on either side of the wound and let the grace flow as the opalescent mark shimmered. It would help with pain and infection that would have been likely. It still could if there was any debris that didn’t come out with the irrigation. Thick linen was used to pad both entry and exit wound before it was bandaged thickly. The rest of the man’s upper armor and clothing was taken off to get him on a cot as he was not going anywhere. The girl left instructions to wake her in four hours so she could check on it. It would be a few days before it would be determined if the man’s leg could be saved or if he was going to get on a horse anytime soon.

Amunet went to scrub her hands and forearms. The shirt she was wearing had to come off. Blood soaked as it was, it would scare Drak if she went to bed with it on. The camisole was what revealed the lean muscular curvature of her form. Once she was relatively clean and didn’t look like a war zone, she went to a cot in the back near Drak and lay down to close her eyes. The uncertainty of the warrior weighed heavily on her heart.
