Solo Training in Tight Spaces

The Mischief is two days away from Riverfall, and Karin takes a quiet night to practice.

Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

44th Spring, 516 AV,
The Middle Suvan Sea,
Roughly 2 days sailing away from Riverfall,
Late evening, close to the 22nd bell

A stiff breeze propelled the ship forward at an astonishingly speedy pace, but Karin had grown used to it by now, and simply stared out over the dark waters, eyes stinging and a yawn escaping her lips. The sails, currently illusioned into spirals of dark fabric, trailed and whipped behind the ship like streamers. Billowing, dark clouds were drawn like curtains across the moon that night, but she used the light of a bolted down lantern nearby to see her surroundings instead. There wasn't much to see- a coil of rope, the stern of the ship, the churning white waves below. That wasn't her interest tonight.

They were about two days away from Riverfall, and Karin's anticipation was slowly growing in the pit of her stomach. She had no way of knowing what she'd be greeted with once she got there, and the lack of control irked her more than it should. In all likelihood, it would be just another city, like Kenash, or Alvadas, but... she'd just have to wait and see.

She moved her attention to the matter in hand, the thing she'd stayed up late to do. The night was another in a long stream of nights, but in this one she had the quarterstaff she'd bought, all the way back in Alvadas. It seemed such a long time ago now, which in itself was odd. Her adventures of late had stopped her thinking about her old home, and truthfully, she didn't mind it, glad to be away, and most especially glad to be on the sea.

The wooden staff was warm, heated by her hand. It felt reassuring to hold it now. Before, it had felt unwieldy and strange, but now... Now it was normal. The space she stood in was just big enough for her to practice, if she positioned herself right and didn't flourish too much. That knowledge had come from a few days of blustering around, taking wild swings in the dark and getting tangled in various objects before finally adjusting to the part of the deck that she had.

Her training tonight was because of two things. She felt nervous of this new city that lurked in her future. And she felt uncomfortably aware of how little progress she'd gained from her previous practice sessions, despite her familiarity with the staff. Most of them had ended up being disrupted by others, sailors or performers. Karin didn't like practising in front of others, too resolute and stubborn to admit that she didn't exactly know what she was doing. Hence practising at night.

She would practise blocking tonight, she decided. But first... stretches. For five chimes, the girl rolled her shoulders, pulled her elbows, stretched her arms and legs, and massaged her neck. The sailors that manned the ship nearby didn't appear to either notice or care, which Karin was glad about. She was soon finished, and picked up the 'staff, long fingers wrapping carefully around the each end of the staff. Let's get started.

She imagined an enemy. Perhaps he was a pirate, or a thief. Sometimes, she imagined an Isur, but this evening was an exception. Karin didn't have enemies, but that wasn't to say that she couldn't form them. And she didn't have a hard time imagining them. Tonight, her imaginary attacker was a woman, who had once wronged Laviku. Not that the 'backstory' really mattered, but the girl had found that it helped.

The woman had a... sword, Karin decided. She wasn't sure how a staff would hold up against a sword in a real life fight, and vowed to not find out. If her opponent were real, the tactic she'd use would be a simple one, aim for the head and apply a sharp knock. But she had no such luxury, or rather, no such worry.

Karin brought her arms up sharply, blocking an imaginary attack, before turning both arms sideways to hold the staff vertically. She then jabbed it forwards. There, that's a rib knocked out of place, woman! She repeated the movement a few times, getting the feel of it.

Half-way through, she realised she was leaving a gaping hole where any manner of attacker could stab, smack, or bash her. She blushed to herself, feeling stupid. Karin thought for a moment, resting her staff on the deck whilst balancing her chin on the end of the stick. If she was defending herself (or someone else, came the unbidden thought in her head), what would she need to do, or look out for?

Obviously, she would need to see what the other person or thing was doing. She would need to be able to react. Or maybe even second-guess. With a shrug, the girl picked up the staff again, and gave it a swing. Thinking too hard meant she picked holes in her current training plan, of which there were many. When she felt better prepared, she would seek someone out to train against, properly. For now though? Solitary training was perfectly fine for her. Perfectly.

Karin gripped the staff with her left hand, and swung it by the end like a sword, aiming to block whatever attack would come from her side. Naturally, she fumbled it, and with a loud smack!, wood resounded on wood as she hit a crate. One of the sailors looked up with surprise, but then shook his head with a grumble when he realised it was only the crazy lady with the stick.

Karin blushed quietly in the dark, but abruptly stopped herself. The soft light of the lantern was flickering low, and she watched its flame fluttering behind the clouded glass, before picking up her staff again. She'd never formed a strong opinion of it, but the dark was becoming her friend. It was a place to hide herself, comforting and freeing.

She started practising lunging, cramped and not as energetic as she'd like in this space, but lunging all the same. The staff was pushed out in front of her, horizontally gripped in her hands. Abruptly, two things happened at once. First, the dimming light blew out, leaving the girl in three-quarter darkness. The second was that there was a splash above the other splashing of the bow. She carefully propped her staff against a crate and danced over to the edge of the ship, bouncing on her toes, feeling alive.

The sea glistened with the light of the gibbous moon, and the source of the splashing? Well, if it wasn't a pod of dolphins, swimming in the wake of the ship. Karin grinned in pure delight. She sat down, watching them playing, oblivious to their secret admirer. She gripped hold of a rope, and hung herself cautiously just over the edge of the ship to get a better view, and was glad of it as the wind swept through her hair and a fine sea spray settled over her face.

Her staff was forgotten for a while as she watched them. They truly were playful creatures, mischievous even. Quite fitting for a boat named the Mischief. The quiet laughing of the sailors over some joke brought her back to the present moment, and she wandered back over to where her staff was, picking it up and bringing it to the side of the ship.

There was probably less space here, but she didn't care. The presence of the dolphins was soothing and besides, she could feel that her practice session was cooling down. She'd stop soon, but for now she'd simply practise some blocking against the edge of the ship.

The pod of dolphins had swam away by the time she had finished, and she wiped her brow with a soft sigh. Tiredness crept like a lover, and she yawned and stretched, cat-like. Now was the time to stop. She strummed the edge of the ship with the tips of her fingers, and slowly made her way below deck.

It was much darker down there, and there was no light to guide her. She bumped into a few things before she found her way to her bunk, and fell into it with a sigh. Her room-mate's bed was occupied by her snoring self, but Karin ignored her as she deposited her staff under her bunk.

The covers were soon drawn over her form, and she stretched before rolling over, pondering the day's events and wondering what the next day would bring. They had been sailing near to the coast, but had navigated away for a couple of days due to a dangerous stretch of water. Tomorrow she'd probably see land again. That would be looked-forward to by the crew...

And before she'd even finished her musings, the girl was fast asleep.

This wasn't that bad, actually, if a little pedestrian when it came to descriptive language. By that I mean it seemed somewhat internal: you evoked Karin's feelings well, her doubts and frustrations, but painting the picture of her environment needs a little more work. Don't mistake me, I'm not asking for purple prose of Thomas Hardy-esque description of every little sodding thing, but don't be afraid to embellish a little.

As far as combat goes, those always work better with a partner, PC or NPC. However, I thought you did a good job of showing Karin being self-critical and eager to improve. One thing that always works for me is to make combat scenes (of any size or nature) split up into smaller sentences, almost like fragments. That way it reads faster and more frenetic... almost like a screenplay, I guess. That works for me, but you could ask guys like Skyard or Alexander Faircroft, who have a seen a lot of combat, too.

Oh, and please make sure you go back and edit your post in the Request Thread to reflect the fact this one is now done and dusted. PM me with any questions and later 'tater!
