New Beginnings

Morning of the 5th of Fall, 516

The tent was lined with colors of varying brightness and hues. Scrolls holding past arts and portraits showed magnificent representations of local flora and fauna as well some unknown ones. If the outside of the tent was said to be beautiful, the inside needed a better word. Breathtaking maybe did the trick. It was a place where artists thrived and where there was pain, but it was pain with a reason and a purpose behind it. The result of said pain was always meant to be beautiful and worth all the receiver of it suffered.

“Hello, can I help you?” one of the workers in the tent grabbed Taurina’s attention away from one of the pieces of artwork she had been captivated by. She remembered what she had come here for and offered the man a smile as she collected her thoughts.

“Yes, I am Taurina and I am se-searching for job here,” the Ethaefal introduced herself in pavi that was layered with a thick common accent, “I not have much experience tattooing, but I have little and am wanting to learn. Someone told this was the place to look for that.” Taurina remembered very little of grassland sign, but she tried using it to convey feelings of searching and longing.

The man took a pause before looking the Eth over. Taurina knew she wasn’t much to look at right now. Her earthbound form was still worn from the journey here and her form carried little to none of the usual Drykas physique. Her hair was limp and tangled from the wind despite her combing through it this morning, a few knotted braids worked into it in an effort to at least try to fit in with her the people she now lived amongst. She was a poor example of the Drykas people right now, but she was trying. She was giving effort and she hoped to progress as quickly as one could expect her to.

There had been no magically revelation when Taurina reached the tent city. There was no feeling of this being her home. No divine impartation of her purpose in this life. There was nothing, truly nothing, besides the relief that she was no longer stranded out in the Sea of Grass with a handful of merchants just trying to survive and reach the tent city. It was disappointing to not suddenly have knowledge of what she was suppose to do or a guide to help her along the way, but she had sucked it up and this was the first step in getting herself set up among these people. Get a job, learn their customs, learn what was important to them, grow as much as possible. That was why she hadn’t waited long in seeking these people out, she wanted to get started.

“Well Taurina, I am Injal Lilacwind and I think we can work something out for you,” the Drykas man finally said with a smile on his face and signs of acceptance. He seemed friendly and looked past her broken speech which she was grateful for. That was another thing that needed some working on if she expected to truly find a home here. Taurina smiled, her hands struggling to convey her thankfullness. “I will not let you down,” was a promise she spoke and silently prayed that she would be able to keep.

New Beginnings

A bell or so later

Jarorra Lilacwind was the second person the Ethaefal was introduced to. The woman was vibrant with eyes that danced with amusement and playfulness. They didn’t know each other long and not much was discussed before Taurina was swept away to the artist’s sketching station and told to observe. A young Drykas male looking to get his windmarks inked upon his skin had entered and Jarorra was taking the consultation.

Taurina took a seat behind Jarorra and studied the client from where she sat. He was from the ruby clan, she could tell by the cloth of red intwined with his wild hair that hung down beneath his shoulders. His body was well built, but his face was young so Taurina guessed him to be in his teens. The smile on his face was kind and his eyes came alive as he was talking to Jarrora. The woman asked some questions, but mostly listened as she sketched on what had been a clean scroll at the beginning of the talk.

Taurina’s attention was drawn to the sketch Jarrora was creating. There were bold lines that came together and created a story told from different angles. The shading in the sketch was simple and basic, just enough to act as a guide for the tattoo artist. Still, the simple sketch captured the Eth’s attention. She had a lot to learn before she was at the level of the others who worked here.

The Drykas male staid until Jarorra was satisfied she had enough information. Taurina had listened and stayed out of the way while studying how Jarorra worked in her sessions. The young male was coming back in a day with some of his pavilion for the inking of the windmarks on his skin. Taurina didn’t know why so many were coming, but felt it foolish to ask while he was still there so she kept her mouth shut and just watched as he departed the tent.

“Why many come for him?” Taurina gathered the courage to ask Jarorra the question that she felt had been too foolish to ask while the male Drykas was still here. Question, confusion, desire to learn Taurina struggled to convey through the signs. Jarorra seemed to get the idea well enough and mercifully gave Taurina her answer without making any sort of deal over the nature of the question.

“Windmarks are a big deal in Drykas culture. It is common for friends and families to come. It actually is strange that he came alone for this part, usually many more come,” Jarorra explained, giving only minimal signs to accompany her speech. If the Eth had to guess, the woman had picked up on her lack of knowledge when it came to the language around here. Interest, understanding, and thankfulness was Taurina’s poor job at giving a reply.

It felt weird to the Eth not to rely just on words. After her fall the majority of her time had been spent with those who spoke common and relied more on their words more than most anything else. The mix of language and sign was a struggle to once more become accustom to.

“You will assist all three of us as we need you,”Jarorra explained details about what the Eth would be expected to do, “You will also have opportunities to learn if you wish for them.” Taurina nodded at that. Desire, longing, curiosity. Jarorra replied with acceptance and willingness. The use of words was unneeded it seemed as there was understanding between the artist and the new assistant.

New Beginnings

The next day, 6th of Fall 516

It got to the point where the body went numb from all the pain it was experiencing. The muscles still tensed with each prick but their was less of the forcing oneself from crying out. The person just grew used to the pain as it became the new normal. The young Drykas was handling it well. Taurina was impressed. She did not remember the creation of her own tattoos, but she guessed it had been something like this. Perhaps she had been like this Drykas or perhaps she had been weaker and needed the painkiller. She wasn’t sure and it didn’t matter at this moment in time. A job was needed to be focused on rather than her wandering thoughts and seemingly endless questions.

Jarrora was humming as she worked, calm and peaceful as she moved her tools with knowledge and art. The piece the Drykas male was having done was fairly large over the upper left part of his back that stretched around the shoulder and trailed down the muscles of his upper arm. The line work had been completed first and Jarrora was working on bringing the art to life as she filled it all in. She hummed her song and the Drykas male talked with his family that had gathered around for the momentous event. They had all been going at it for a couple bells by this point.

Taurina had been given the task of stretching the skin so that it remained taunt and smooth for Jarrora to work along. She did this by putting her hands to one side of where Jarrora was working and applying enough pressure that the skin became smooth. The Eth had to be careful to not pull the skin in an unnatural way or too tight that the tattoo laid strange when the pressure was taken off. Sometimes she used two hands on either side of the area Jarrora was working or both hands to one side. It helped that the Drykas male had developed muscles in the area they art was being applied so that the skin didn’t need much manipulating for it to be tight enough for the tattoo to be applied correctly.

The process of adding ink to the skin was painful, but it also was not very clean. With each mark formed by the chisel, blood would ease out and form beads along the skin. Taurina frequently took a clean cloth that had been doused with water and ran it over the newly marked skin to clean away the blood. This kept things cleaner so Jarrora could see what exactly had been done and still needed to be done.

The process of receiving windmarks took many bells. The young Drykas remained resilient through it all and talked throughout the process with the family that surrounded him and occasionally to the artist working on him and the assistant helping her. Taurina remained focused on her tasks, but listened with open ears. This was a way for her to learn about the Drykas people and what was important to them. It was a way for her to become familiar with the culture as well as the individual people she was living among.

The Eth understood now why the Drykas male had brought his family to be around him. Not only was this a grueling, painful process, but it was also a sort of spiritual representation of what had transpired. The bonding between human and strider, Taurina had been taught, is what makes a Drykas. One is not considered to be fully Drykas until the event had transpired and he or she had been chosen by one of the beloved horses. This male gaining his windmarks had transferred from just culturally being a Drykas to actually being one and Taurina was beginning to understand how big of a deal that was.

New Beginnings

Postby Taurina on October 20th, 2016, 9:48 pm

The young male Drykas was worked on for several more bells before Jarorra completed and was satisfied with her work. There was happiness and signs of enthusiasm from both the young Drykas and from his family. All seemed proud and excited that this event had transpired and the family embraced the young male with love and joy. The feelings in the air were contagious as even Taurina found herself excited for the male and her own small smile had formed on her lips as she was cleaning up.

It wasn’t long before the Drykas and his family said their goodbyes and left, all in a great celebratory mood that had taken ahold of all those within the Lilacwind pavilion. Even Keil, who Taurina found to be the most serious of the group shortly after meeting him, had traces of a smile on his lips. Injal was smiling as well, but that wasn’t uncommon. Even in the short time the Eth had known these people she had picked up on their different personalities and Injal was the most social and most likely to be found with a smile out of the group.

“So Taurina, tell us about yourself,” Injal asked as he sat down across from her and helped with the cleaning of Jarorra’s tools and the putting away of all the inks that had been used. Taurina was skeptical about giving details at first, but she had made a promise to herself. A promise to be transparent and not hide her true nature from those she met in Endrykas. It was only fair that her employers knew about her and she hadn’t revealed much the previous day so it seemed that now was the time.

Taurina focused on cleaning the tops of the jars that ink had been poured out of and securing them shut once more as she talked, keeping her hands busy as she spoke. “There not much to tell,” was her start, disinterest, “I’ve not been here long, but I want to get to know the culture here.” Desire and curiosity. “I know that I look like Drykas and I have the windmarks that tell I was,” she referred to the marks that had been inked upon her in a previous life, “but really I am Ethaefal. That is the reason behind my lack of knowledge.”

Taurina’s pavi was laced with the usual thick accent that the usage of common language gave her and there was a great lack in her signing. For the most part she didn’t use it. The Eth finished up with the jars and moved to put them away in their places. She was worried about how the others would react to her not really being Drykas. It was like she was, but she wasn’t really and she hadn’t much experience yet with people reacting to the news. Just a little from the few she met when first arriving in Endrykas not many days ago.

“Well, I guess things make sense now,” that was Jarorra’s voice accompanied by understanding that Taurina saw when she looked over. The female Lilacwind gave a knowing smile and an indifferent shrug. “Your broken pavi and the lack of knowledge on windmarks seemed to be too far off for a Drykas, but all has become clear now,” was Jarorra’s further explanation of her thoughts. Taurina gave a weary smile, glad Jarorra was accepting, but still worried if this would change things.

“As long as you pull your weight, don’t see why it matters,” was Injal’s response with a grin and his own sign of acceptance and understanding. Taurina was able to take a breath now and give a more genuine smile. She was glad for the relief acceptance gave her and pleased with the way things turned out. It would be alright here she was beginning to see. She would learn and grow and maybe one day everything would just fall into place. Maybe one day her purpose and reason for being here would become clear.

“Thank you,” Taurina told them both, a smile still lingering on her lips and a new light in her eyes. Excitement towards the future was beginning to take hold of her and there was a hope that she hadn’t had before began to break through. Even though the battle to figure everything out was long from over, the weight of it on her had been lightened and facing it didn’t seem as scary. For the time being at least.
