the Drunken Fish

X

It was late, perhaps one bell past midnight. Residential areas of Sunberth lay quiet and sleeping, the occasional owl hoot or fox screech to penetrate the night. Around the docks, the sea too was silently sighing on the shore, the breath of the sea rising and lowering the waves like Laviku silently sleeping. Yet even in the soft darkness of late summer, early autumn, the bars, taverns and inns of Sunberth were glowing with energy and raucous humanity.

And it was in one of those taverns that Baran was blinking, slowly and stupidly as the beer and ale sloshed in his system. He was drunk as a skunk, as many of the people around him were too. Stacked on the table in front of him were innumerable tankards. One should note that they were empty, but to give fairness to the man, not all were his. No, some of them belonged to the man's newfound friends of the evening, a group of sailors hailing from goodness knows where. All of them were drunk, to varying degrees. But they were having a great time.

The man looked with blurry vision at the tankard in front of him. He sloshed it from side to side. Empty. With a muttered, "Petch it", under his breath, he got up and staggered over to the bar. He'd knocked into multiple people on the way over, yet it wasn't until he'd actually reached the bar that he'd managed to actually knock someone over completely.

Being completely inebriated didn't help as he tried to pick the person, the woman off the floor. It took a couple of tries, as he repeatedly told her he was sorry, in varying degrees of semi-understandable, alcohol-garbled Common. Whether she could understand him, or his actions was another story, but he felt like he was being helpful.

As soon as he'd got the woman up, he grinned at her like he'd personally saved her life. "Sorry 'bout that!!!" Leaning forwards, he patted her shoulder with more force than he meant to, and inclined his head towards the bar. "Y-wanna drink?" Whether she said yes or no, the man was already ordering two mugs of their 'finest' ale. When he had them, he pushed one over to his new friend.

The season had been a long one for the man, one of the reasons he was getting completely hammered now. Although he hadn't taken part in the madness going on around him, it was hard not to notice the disease that had taken people over, the sickness, irritability, and rouge gang members scattered throughout the streets. It was also the reason why there were so many people in the tavern, even this late at night. Unnecessary hardship would always need to be medicated with the world's best medicine- beer.

OOCThe woman he knocked over can be you if you want it to be, or someone else if you had a different idea of how you wanted the two to meet. :) PM if there's anything you wanted changing in this opener!

Deliath Telori

~
Deliath had arrived at the tavern earlier in the evening with the intention of making conversation with the sailors that were notorious for visiting the bar. She had wanted to hear their stories, to learn about the rest of the world that she hadn't yet ventured to.
And it had proved fruitful. She'd had heard plenty of stories from beyond Syliras, although most were about the women, or particularly gruesome fights that these men had been in, which were often the most entertaining of the stories of course.

She had enjoyed the evening so far, but not had anywhere near as much to drink as the others in the bar, due to her taking thrice the time to drink just one tankard, but it did mean that, although she was very much 'tipsy', she could still see properly, and that when she finally decided to leave she wouldn't be the easiest target for any gangs that may stand between the tavern and her home

Grinning, she had made her way to the bar and was about to get herself another drink when somebody crashed into her, knocking her off her feet and causing her to clumsily flop to the floor. Whilst down their, she looked about dazed for a moment before the culprit began trying to help her to her feet, several times, while apologising in what sounded like alcohol fuelled common, and she couldn't help but break out into laughter at the sound.

When finally on her feet, she managed to compose herself a bit more, but kept finding herself quietly chuckling under her breath.
"It's a'ight." she responded, slurring slightly although not as much as her new acquaintance, before she felt him pat her shoulder quite roughly and she almost found herself tripping, before the man offered her a drink and she couldn't help but grin at the offer, opting to nod furiously before opening her mouth again. "A drink wou' be grea'!" she declared joyfully before giving the man a few glances.

She couldn't deny that he was fine specimen, but she wasn't sure whether that was her view, or the alcohol.
"So, wha' do you call yourself? I'm Deli- Delia... I'm Del!" she asked before slurring at her attempts to give him her name, before giving up and giving the nickname that she tended to go by.
Grinning again, she extended her hand to shake his in a friendly exchange, although she wasn't sure whether his coordination would allow such a gesture to again.
She was hoping that he would tell her his stories and entertain her for a while. He looked that he could have a few interesting stories, although she wasn't sure whether he was in a state to tell her any of them in a way that was understandable

It was fortunate for the man, really, that the woman he'd so ungraciously knocked over was not some harsh fishwife, or ragged cutpurse. At least, she didn't appear to be on first glance. A beautiful, blonde-headed woman with eyes of some colour that was probably nice. He blinked at her stupidly whilst trying to clear his head somewhat. "'Ere!" He pushed the drink over to her, and leaned his hand back to rest on the bar. Unfortunately for him, he missed and half-stumbled down to the ground similarly to how she had just fallen. If it hadn't been clear just how drunk he was until now, then she'd be left in no confusion from the current state of affairs.

As if suddenly remembering, he grinned an equally cheery smile towards her. "Del's pretty name." With an exaggerated gesture, he pointed to himself. "I'm Baran." With a ferocious nod, he grabbed his drink and took a glug, enjoying the way the alcohol slipped down his throat and wetted his lips. Some sense of guiltiness echoed through his head though, and he placed a more gentle hand on the woman's arm. "You sure you're okay? I didn't mean to knock y'over there! Anyway, what is a pretty lass like you doin' here?"

The question wasn't posed in a way that made her seem like she shouldn't be there- natural curiosity was all that was on the man's mind. Also, talk of ships and sailing was all well and good, but soft-spoken words from a woman's lips was more appealing to the ear, and plus she seemed like someone he'd get along with. Along with the face that the man felt worried, in a way. Worried and slightly excited about the ongoing events in Sunberth. He was a man of adventure, but perhaps this kind of adventure was a little too much.

Either way, he smiled and chinked his tankard with hers, before taking another measured sip. As the beery smells of a group of men washed over them, he frowned and talked loudly over the din. "Gods it'sa bit busy in here today!"

Deliath Telori

~
Deliath accepted the drink and took a swig of it, allowing it to flow down her throat before she saw him fall over and she couldn't stop herself laughing again. She couldn't help it, and she gathered that she became a merry, giggly drunk

Then found herself grinning even wider as the man said that Del was a pretty name before he gave his name.

She carefully looked his face over as he gave her his name, trying to commit it to her memory along with his name, although in her state she probably would have very little memory of him when she sobered up.

"Baran? I've neve' me' anyone with tha' name before! Tis nice! Suits ya!" she exclaimed, before taking another swig.

"Am fine, am fine! I've 'ad worse lad!" she grinned widely, tilting her head clumsily to look at him from another angle. "An' to ge' drunk of course! An' listen t' stories! A like the stories. How do they tell them so well?" she rambled clumsily, rocking back and forth on her heels before taking another drink. "I can' tell stories. No' the way other people do. How 'bou' you? You a regular?"

She asked, taking yet another drink and finding herself reaching the bottom of the tankard far quicker than she ever had done before.
Had she been sober, she'd probably have stopped herself from drinking, but she was far from sober. Instead she caught the bartenders attention and dropped four copped Mizas onto the bar for another ale. To her it seemed like a good idea, but she would probably have the roughest headache, since she had first arrived in Sunberth, the next morning.

"Tis! Bu' busy times are best times!" she declared, quite liking the amount of people there was in the tavern, all merrily drunk, for now, and all having a good time. "Do you prefer it quie' or busy, lad?"

She watched him through her slightly blurred vision, her hand on her fresh tankard of ale but not taking a drink from it yet. She was saving it for a short while, realising that she hadn't brought much money with her and that she shouldn't attempt to down the drink if she wanted to stay until closing time.

"Eeeeh, I don't mind it so much, just to hear your dulcet tones." He winked. He was absorbing the woman's happy countenance like the alcohol that was rapidly causing his drunkenness. He really did enjoy smiles over frowns, and decided there and then that Deliath was his new friend. "Aye, I.. regular? Well..." He flapped his hands dramatically. "Not a regular but not irregular!" With a hearty guffaw, he glanced over at Del again, only just noticing her slight hump-back. It wasn't mentioned though. Even in his state, he still retained some manners.

A sudden flash of inspiration hit him, and he gasped audibly. "Del, Del! Wanna play a game? A drinkin' game?" He would gaze at her and smile with a barely suppressed chuckle, because he knew what the game was and it was to him quite an amusing one. Perhaps it was quite childish to think of playing games, but he was used to pranks and oddities. In truth, he had hardly grown up, still preferring to be jolly and fun, rather than sombre and boring. In a way, it was his greatest fear to grow old and crumbly, to forget the pleasures of simply having a good time.

As he waited on her reply, he began collecting bits and pieces of detritus from the bar, bottle tops, crusts of bread, nut shells and other assorted unknowns. He was focused for a few chimes as he wove awkwardly between patrons, lean over shoulders to get what he was looking for. When he returned to where Del was standing he deposited his spoils on the table, and waited for her verdict.

OOCSorry it's short!

Deliath Telori

Deliath found herself grinning even wider as the man described her voice as 'dulcet tones', before she tilted her head and listened more to him. Then he asked if she wanted to play a drinking game and her eyes immediately brightened.

She was about to respond before he disappeared and she shrugged her shoulders, before grabbing the attention of the bartender.
"Can I ge' cider please?" she said, her words slurring together as she handed over a few copper miza, before being handed a mug of the two berry cider that was renowned throughout Sunberth.
As she turned back around to look for Baran, she found the man reappearing with a bunch of things that he must have found throughout the tavern.
She found herself tilting her head and wondering what his drinking game was before grinning widely.

"A drinking game? Why not!" she declared, not sure as to how the game would end, or what the rules were. She'd never really played any drinking games and had only heard of drinking games involving races or cards.
"How do we play this game then lad?" she asked, trying her hardest to keep her words understandable, despite them blurring together in a slur.

She glanced around the bar again, to see if she could spot anybody else that she knew, but it appeared that Baran was now the only person she knew the name of. The rest were just faces she'd seen in the streets, or helped out with a quick bandaging or treatment for an infected wound.

Then, with her face in a lopsided smile she looked back at Baran, waiting to hear how this drinking game was supposed to go. Either way, she was sure it would be fun, and a new experience for herself.
