Hollow Venture

oocI seem to have left this thread sitting overlong... so sorry for that!

The woman shot a second arrow to dispatch her quarry, then waded out into the lake, her splashing progress sending the ducks into a concerned flurry of movement -- not flight, but quick paddling to increase the distance between themselves and the now-revealed predator. She made her way back with an obvious air of satisfaction; well, it was merited.

As the stranger set about getting herself and her kill in order, Khida moved in closer. Not close, she wasn't there for the woman; she wanted a tree. Or shrub, as the case might be. One where she might rest her bow, and her quiver, and --

-- the other huntress' silhouette blocked out a stretch of light-gilded lake and blue horizon. Khida paused, blinking up at her, and blinked again to the woman's sign. Something about togetherness...

Khida cast another sidelong glance at the waterfowl upon the lake.

Yes, she signed to the woman, proceeding to slough off her vest and set it in the branches near the bow. You, below, she continued. I, above. Shoes and trousers followed in short order, and then -- without really even waiting for assent from her companion -- the woman was gone, her form dissolved into pinpricks of light which reshaped into something else entirely.

The falcon surged upwards on strong wingbeats, seeking to get above the tangled brush, where she had actual lines of sight to work with... not to mention lines of attack. Free of the trees, she climbed higher still, arcing around to put herself out over the water, the fowl now between her and the huntress on the shore. Having the sun more or less at her back was also a boon; though the falcon had to be mindful of where her shadow fell, the bright backlighting would make her difficult for the waterbirds to see. She could have descended upon them then and there -- would have, except the other had suggested together. So instead she left initiative to the woman, banking on an even better opportunity arising from her next actions.

This particular Drykas wasn't her rightful partner, but even if the woman just seemed menacing to the fowl, Khida fully expected to get mileage out of her presence.

And with just a bit of luck added in, perhaps she wouldn't be returning to Endrykas empty-handed either.

Hollow Venture

Postby Ashka Windrunner on April 2nd, 2017, 1:34 pm

The huntress had agreed to her offer, at Ashka's satisfaction; she had struck a lucky arrow today, but felt more confident hunting with someone with experience.

But the other had layed her bow and arrows down, against a low bush. Wouldn't she need them to pursue the hunt ?

You, below. I, above.

She watched, perplexed, as the dark-hair woman took off her clothes behind a shrub. What on Semele was she...

A sudden flash of lights, a swirl of colours, and the woman was gone.

A gasp of surprise choked in Ashka's throat. Never in her life had she witnessed a person, or anything else, vanishing into sparkles and thin air. The ""occurence left quite an impression on her; eyes wider than ever in astonishment, she had jumped and dropped her kill.
Now, in place of a Drykas woman was a bird. A bird of prey, it seemed, not an eagle judging by its size and colours, but she had seen falconers hunting with similar birds.
Ash did not have too much time to think or watch, the falcon already flying high, above the trees and bushes. Soon she was not able to follow its course, for Syna's bright rays blinded her eyes.

Shaking her head out of her surprise, she tried to recall what she knew about people shapeshifting into animals... Mages ? Witches ? No. She remembered a word... Kelvics. That's what they were. The name ''popped in her mind, reminiscing from old stories and conversations half-heard. A race of shifters, equally human and beast, able to take on one form or the other at will. Now that she remembered, Kelvics were not rare in Endrykas. She had probably met some without even knowing it. But it was the first time she saw the transformation happening, and it was a sight she knew she'll remember.

Once past her surprise, she picked up the duck she had dropped on the ground and attached it to her waist with a measure of rope. She understood the meaning of the woman's words now. But how does one hunt with a falcon for a partner ? Ash searched her memory for anything related to birds of prey. Her Pavilion mostly hunted with bows and spears, and Idathi's male Luvanor. However, she recalled the day her brothers and her crossed paths with an Emerald Clan hunting party, out with their birds. What had happened then ? Ashka's brows furrowed as she focused to bring the memories back.

The falconers and dogs had found prey, a flock of pigeons nesting on the ground, then removed the hoods from the birds' heads. Afterwards, they had unleashed their raptors to the skies. The birds had not seemed to need indications or orders; as soon as the pigeons entered their vision, they were rushing down on them, and soon it was over.

Her role would be similar, then. The preys were visible, in the open, somewhere between the falcon and her. She would just have to lead them towards her feathered hunting partner.

Focusing on her new task, the Drykas drew another arrow. If she spooked them into flying up a little, just a little further away, maybe the other would be able to swoop onto one of them, causing even more confusion, and maybe a chance for her to make a second kill. Ashka didn't know if her plan would work, but that was all she could think of while the peregrine swung its wings, getting closer to the ducks.

She faced the waterfowl, now too far away for an easy shot. Her arms tensed while she pulled back the arrow, fighting against the wood's curve. She brought the bow up, feather tickling her nose and left arm held straight out. Closing an eye to better her aim, she held her breath for a second, tried to keep her hands steady, and then... Released.
