A city floating in the center of a lake, Ravok is a place of dark beauty, romance and culture. Behind it all though is the presence of Rhysol, God of Evil and Betrayal. The city is controlled by The Black Sun, a religious organization devoted to Rhysol. [Lore]

The days grow shorter and little by little, one can sense an electricty in the air. A man's skin puckers beneath a sharp breeze and a woman's eyes squint as the illuminated orbs that light the skies seem to hang lower. The shadows are longer and the whispers are loudest at the beginning and end of the day in this false light of dusk and dawn.

Heavy questions burden the necks of those with responsibilities as rumors fly like the water gliders across a glassy lake. Life exists much as it has in seasons' past for Ravokians in their quiet city of steady jobs and stubborn pride. Yet, it's almost like the residents are holding their breath as if waiting for something to happen. The citizens of Rhysol's paradise are strong and vibrant people who often take the initiative to create, conquer or evolve but there seems to be a stagnation in the pool of progress.

A city seeks to rise above the moorings of a world gone soft. Fortune, glory and honor await those who have the heart to take hold of the future... but no one said it would be easy. It's time, brothers and sisters. So sharpen your weapons and your wits. Steel your wills and listen.

Rhysol is calling.

**Quest Etiquette by Gossamer** :
Quest Etiquette
The Player Section

Image

Quest Etiquette can be a real make or break thing in terms of a quest. Players sin and moderators sin. Sometimes I wonder if its because players have no idea what true quest etiquette is? Do moderators? From years of D&D tabletop I've formed what MY OPINION of quest etiquette is. I go by it now on Mizahar. Be sure you review this if your in one of my quests and try to adhere to the basic premise of this post. If your a moderator, make sure you are trying to enforce these things in your quests. Otherwise, your quest party is full of douchebags and you should just run their horses off a cliff and end the bad behavior once and for all.

  • Acknowledge the other people in a quest. Note their actions in your post by reacting to them even if its just a brief line or two. Don’t ignore their presence. It’s rude beyond belief to come into a quest and solo it without paying attention to the others in the party. The same thing is true if people break into subgroups and ignore the other subgroups. Subgroups are fine as long as everyone is a part of one and they note each other’s actions and include each other and everyone else in their posts.

  • Acknowledge the actions of others in the quest. You aren’t in a solo moderated thread. Note others actions as part of your response and put some opinion of the action in there. Do you approve? Are they being stupid? Make that part of your post. Argue with their action if you disagree or try to block it. That’s all part of the fun. Agree with it? Help them do the action! Step up and say great idea and lend a hand. The biggest crime in a quest thread is to ignore a fellow quester.

  • Establish what your PC is wearing/wielding/and has on their person. Magically appearing gear is annoying in any sort of quest. That goes double for the whole ‘its in my bag at all times things’. Please make sure in your initial post to establish to yourself and the others what your PC is wearing, holding, and carrying for the duration of the quest. If your allowed to take the time to ‘gear up’ then go get your full gear and re-establish what you have in a post following a ‘gear up’ session. That way one can avoid the magical bag of ‘everything even the kitchen sink is in here’ and yet your pc moves unencumbered through the quest.

  • Don’t poach information. If one character learns of something by their actions, its up to them to share that information with the party. If they don’t then you don’t know it. So long as they are paying attention to you and acknowledging your actions, its perfectly fine to withhold information.

  • Stick to the posting order. This goes along with information poaching. Try very hard to post in the order the original postings were made. This gives everyone an equal chance to post and react in the order they carried out actions and learned things. Skipping posting order is only okay if a moderator says it is or the moderator is tired of waiting for one slow poster to post.

  • Don’t stand and do nothing. No one likes a PC who’s in a quest just to observe. This is a huge waste of time too. Don’t do nothing and don’t actually join a quest thread if you think all you are going to do on your first post is observe. Moderators hate that and might get spiteful towards your PC if all you are doing is lookilooing the whole time. Perform actions, ask questions, and think heavily about what might be going on.

  • Do things you can do. Don’t do things you can’t do. Are you a fighter? Fight then. Are you a wizard? Perform magic. Healers can heal. Everyone can look and observe for things. But if your unskilled at something like say disarming traps, don’t try to disarm traps. You’re going to get your stupid ass killed and probably those around you. Quest parties form organically and come together in a way where everyone has a role. Play your role. Don’t suddenly think your superman when you’re a three inch pycon. Those roles don’t work. Play roles that work.

  • Make quest posting a priority. If you are in a moderated thread, post to that FIRST before you post to your solos or socials. They are important to the moderators and the players so be sure you make it a priority to yourself as well.

  • Keep information organized in your mind. Understand and keep it straight in your mind what is ‘general’ information that everyone learns and what is ‘private’ information that someone finds out. You can act on general information but not on private information unless it is private information you earned.

  • Know your character limits. What is your characters size and strength? Can you lift that? Can you wield that? Does your character know what that thing is even if you do? Make sure you are aware of your lores and your skills. If you don’t have say a huge physical presence, don’t think you can lift a knight in full body armor as an average female and carry him out of a burning building. That probably won’t happen. You probably can’t even roll him over.

  • Be aware of YOUR location and the locations of the rest of the group members. Describe where exactly you are standing carefully in the scene in relation to fixed objects or things that are the focal point of a scene. Are you right next to another group member? Are you standing behind the group ready to heal them? Are you kneeling in front examining something? Be specific. Remember, let everyone know where you are. Don’t stomp on anyone in making an action. Slide around someone if they are in front of you and what you want to do. This goes back to acknowledging someone is somewhere doing something. Acknowledge them.

  • Just ask and you’ll know. Sounds like a simple thing right? But don’t assume anything. If you want to know more about something specifically examine it in your response. Ask in your post. “John Smith wondered how the man had managed to carry enough water to traverse the desert without dehydration. He should have been dehydrated right? So John decided to check his gear and see if there was any evidence as to how it was done.” Boom. You’ve just asked the Mod how something happened and made it clear you were looking for the answer. Now it’s the mods turn to do their job and tell you in their response to your actions. “After a few minutes of searching, John found a bag of holding that had five hundred canteens, most of which were still full, all stuffed inside it.” Don’t assume. Ask!

  • Let the Moderator know how you’re feeling about their quest. Are you bored? Have your PC yawn in boredom. Are you feeling left out or ignored? Write about that. It’s their job as a moderator for everyone to have fun as they tell a story to you. If you’re not having fun or there’s nothing for your PC in the quest so far, let them know by writing about it. They can and will adjust the story accordingly. Though remember, there are two types of quests. One is a sign up quest where a story should be tailored to every PC that signs up. And there are random posted quests you join. The random posted quests are the luck of who shows up first and its less about the PCs and more about the story in that case.

  • Don't criticize the moderator. They are doing it for your fun and their own enjoyment. Go easy on them. Understand that a good moderator might be flexible with the rules to preserve pacing or flow and add an element of the fantastical to the story. This goes for undermining the narrative, too. “This seems straight out of last months' Letters to Penthouse, Jen. What's the deal?” NoteYou know I'm just throwing this in there as a humorous reward for reading this far right? That might not be cool to point out. Just go with it. A good mod will change the ending or the middle and if you hate the quest you can not opt in on another one of theirs later down the line. Also, if you’re noticing inconsistencies, and can’t help it, try phrasing it in the form of a question. E.g., Is this the same begger we met in the last scene? If so, why is his peg leg on the right now instead of the left? Is that really necessary to point out? Probably not. The whole point is that hes a peg-leg dude and leave it at that. It might even be intentional. Is he an illusion that has changed over time? The changes might be hidden clues.

  • Don't engage in non-rewarding conflict or squabbling. Everyone knows that fighting among party members can be hugely distracting. try to limit this type of conflict to those instances which are dramatically rewarding. Contribute to the narrative as a PC rather than distract from it. This game is a social cooperative one. Players forget that. They like to grandstand defiance under the banner of staying true to a character concept. That's bullshit and everyone including themselves know it. The exception to this rule comes when tension or opposition within the party results in dramatic role-playing rewards. In order for the latter to work, remember, all PC’s need to be on the same page and it needs to be fully IC. OOC contempt for another players actions can't creep into the overall narrative or you're violating this rule.

  • Understand your role in a quest as a party member. Your PCs presence in a quest should be to strengthen the bond of the party, support each other player’s character-concept in game, weave your story alongside the other characters’, and finally work together towards your goals. That's it! Everything else like comedic humor or superfluous knowledge is icing on the cake.

    And finally…

  • Don’t void the social contract of quest fellowship! Remember, when you are joining a quest, you are agreeing to join a group and work towards a common goal for the benefit and fun of all the player and the characters in the group. This is a social contract! Avoid slavish behavior meaning a character acting in a way that makes no attempt at originality, constructive interpretation, or development. We all know the pc types. There’s always that pc who won’t go with the party even though the player has joined the quest because they don’t know the others, don’t trust the others, and can see no benefit in it for them. It’s your job as a player to suspend disbelief and find a reason to go and help and be in that group. It’s not the moderator’s job. It’s your job and your social contract of RP QUESTING that you signed. Follow through.

Rumors :
Watery Whispers - The Ravosalamen talk a lot but they hear everything. Take a few rides and you might not believe your ears! Can these things really be true? Maybe you'll just have to discover for yourself.

Players: This will be something that can be done in any order and on any days you choose. PCs will need to investigate the Rumors listed in the Ravasolamen section below. In order to do so, one must take a ride in a ravosala in thread to hear the Rumor. Once that has been posted, send myself or Kayak a PM with the link and we will reply with a clue or tidbit that can be used in another thread. Some Rumors will be shyke and some might have multiple layers which need to be peeled away in order to find the truth. As you use the clues you're given in thread, keep us apprised with links so that we may track your progress.

To summarize:
  1. RP hearing a given Rumor.
  2. Send us a PM with the thread link.
  3. RP with the information you're given.
  4. Send us a PM to finish the investigation.

Anyone can investigate any rumor so long as you go about it in a way that makes sense for your PC. Please contact us if you have any questions.

ST: Kayak & Prophet

A Starving Artist :
Rooftop Romeo -A daring young person has been spotted on rooftops in the evenings and well into the night. This person is not a thief nor a vandal -quite the opposite. He or she seems to just show up at random times and can be seen in deep concentration. When investigations are made, there is always a sketch left behind. These drawings are superbly made and unique though each features some kind of depiction of the heart.

Players: Prophet will be dropping in on random threads all season long with this mystery person. To catch him or her will be a very difficult thing but not impossible. Send Prophet a PM if you have the desire to be left out of this plot. Otherwise, everyone is fair game.

ST: Prophet

Spoonman-CLOSED :
A Spoonful of Sugar - At several of the various establishments throughout the city, decorative or fancy spoons have been left in strange places. Unbeknownst to those who take possession; strange things occur when two of these items come into close proximity with one another.

Players: There are two spoons remaining. The quest is first come first serve so sign up using the supplied form. In order for the submission to be valid, the player must have a thread STARTED where he or she is in or near a linkmap location that is not government, military or a family residence. Players will be assigned a spoon. When two spoons are in the same thread, simply send me a PM and I will inform both parties of the affects. These affects will only happen once. Please know that everything has already been written up. The types of events will depend solely upon the order of spoons.

NOTE: 7 spoons means that each player has 6 threads where the premise has already been laid out. Please do not sign up for this if you don't intend to write with your fellow Ravokians. From a personal standpoint- this is probably the coolest event I've created to date.

An Unexpected Arrival:20th :
Extra! Extra! Read All About It! -20th- On the crisp, clear and sunny day gifted to Ravok by Rhysol, a scout to the west exclaimed as a large, flying creature of some sort is spotted flying toward the city. As it comes closer into view, it is quickly revealed to be a Wind Eagle. These creatures were not terribly common into Ravok, and rumors spread through the city as the Wind Eagle circled overhead. Those with excellent eyesight could see that the bird's body was strapped up with many large satchels. After the unseen rider deemed it time, the Inarta reached down, and released the snap on a satchel, and its contents poured out.

Papers. Thousands of papers. Fliers really. These fliers fluttered down all over the city proper, missing out on lakeshore. The wind, perhaps by Rhysol's own amusement, carried the fliers down to the city, bringing them right into many people's hands. The fliers were of parchment, with many varied inks that carried the same message.

Prepare Yourselves Ravok

The Inverted are coming.

A performance like none your city has ever seen will be given on the final day of Fall.

So ready yourselves for our arrival.

ST: Kayak

If you wish to receive one of the mentioned fliers, please join the Free-For-All thread linked above. There is no post order, no required interaction, and the involved characters do not even need to be in the same exact location. All that needs done is showing your character receiving the flier and interacting with it accordingly. After my initial post in this FFA Open thread, I will not post unless I deem it absolutely necessary.

Once the flier is touched and read by a person, that flier is 'claimed' by that person. It will come to life and fold itself into an origami animal (player's choice). This creature is alive, and will act just as the animal it resembles might. It does not make noise, does not need feed nor make waste. However, it will eat paper that is left out, but doesn't need to do so. The animal will fold rapidly to change forms as needed, such as if thrown, will become a flying animal, or if put in water, becomes a swimming animal. It cannot be damaged or destroyed by mundane means, though magic can kill it. The animal will start off in various shades of warm colors, reds and oranges, indicating that the Inverted are en route and coming closer to the fliers. Once the Inverted arrive, the creatures will turn into cool shades of blue. Once the inverted depart, the color changes to shades of greens or purples. A person can only 'claim' one flier. Once they have an animal, further fliers will not do anything for them.

Location, Location, Location:21-23rd :
The Venue -21st through 23rd- The venerable families have come together deciding to participate in the excitement of the Inverted's first ever performance in Ravok. They work together (and secretly against one another) to find the best location for a new platform to be built for this performance. The families are tapping those with influence to seek out the most ideal location around the outer edges of the city. They are looking for people to interview shop owners and neighbors around proposed areas, coordinating with government officials, and find the absolute best location for a new Theater.

This is a Prompt. All threads involving this Prompt are required to be Open (though politeness and communication are always greatly desired), and should be labeled with a tag of [Venue]. All participation put into this event will affect further Inverted events through the season. Upon completion of any threads with this tag, a Ravok moderator will determine a payment to be given for work. This is side job, not the job your PC is signed up for.

Sink or Swim:24-40th :
Platform -24 through 40th- Now that a location has been decided, construction on a new platform begins. This will involve gathering the supplies, wood and metalwork, creating the platform. The families will be hiring people with the ability to help craft a new platform. Laborers, craftsmen, designers, anyone willing to help out will be hired. Being the first new platform in recent times, this is a large endeavor, and many influential fingers are trying to dip into the honeypot.

Can We Build It? Yes, We Can!:41-90th :
Theater Creation -41st through 90th- Now that the platform is completed, the new theater will be constructed. Once again, artists, craftsmen, and laborers will be contacted in order to craft this new building. However, many of the performance artists within the families of Ravok, as well as those that stand apart from them, have reached out. They are seeking individuals to help with costumes, makeup, and many other aspects of running a production. While the Inverted will be doing the Performance, they require a ton of local support to pull it off successfully.

Upon creating or joining your first [Theater] thread, PM Kayak with ideas that you/your PC would have for design features and such for the Theater. Include in the PM which Ravok family you'd like to work for during this construction. This theater will become a Permanent Location in Ravok, and participation by PCs will help to determine many aspects of it. This includes which family will run the theater, NPCs and PCs that will work there after the performance finishes, the name of the theater, etc. The more participation, ie writing, a PC puts into it, the more influence they gain for themselves and their desired family.

The Circus Comes To Town:88-91st :
The Inverted Arrive -88th through 91st- The Inverted have arrived in Ravok by caravan. Their arrival comes with much excitement and preparation. However, the Inverted always have another motive for their arrival. They intend to gather vital and protected information from important locations all over Ravok. They've gotten in touch with their Ravokian contacts, as well as intelligence gathered by other means, and have selected a few specific individuals to help them in this endeavor.

But Ravok is by no means helpless. The Ebonstryfe have been watching the Inverted Caravan from the moment they touched shore near Syliras. They are keeping tabs on the Alvadan spies and are looking to infiltrate the group, and prevent their spies from gathering any important information. As such, they are contacting those they believe could get close to the Inverted, and giving them a mission, for Ravok and Rhysol.

~~~~~~~~
This stage of the event will be in the form of Moderated Quests run by Kayak. Please submit the following information along with the normal event sign-up form to Kayak's office no later than October 10th.
  • Solo or Small Group preference
  • If you wish to aid the Inverted or the Ebonstryfe
In group threads, Kayak asks that a post 1 week from the previous post be done by all parties (himself included).
The Show Must Go On:91st :
The Performance of a Lifetime -91st- The Inverted performance begins! Everyone in Ravok is invited to watch at the brand new theater. All season has been leading up to this. The Performance is called 'The Heart of Denval'. General admission is free to citizens (probationary and permanent). VIP seating can be paid for. Slaves are permitted to watch for free, but they have the less desirable seats upon nearby roofs and shipmasts. Non-citizens must pay admission for general seating as well as paying to sit with the slaves. They do not have access to the VIP seating, no matter how wealthy they are.
~~~~~~~~

This Performance will be a moderated Open Thread. Anyone can join to watch (or participate if they've so earned the right in the previous stages of the event.). There will be a post order, and Kayak requests that each person post within 1 week of the previous person's post (himself included).

ST: Kayak

A Call to Arms :
The Return to Glory - For all Ebonstryfe and Black Sun members, I have a schedule of deployment available. Once you have registered, send me a PM and we will loosely plan your season. Should you wish to join any of the quests, you must sign up like everyone else. I will not discuss any of the listed events until you have completed the necessary form. Also, should you wish to be given tasks for your job threads, I am willing to provide personalized assignments.

ST: Prophet

All Roads Lead to Ravok :
Make Way -The Black Sun has long eyed a way to improve its ability to traverse the region around its shores. Many have held the belief where that type of expansion would lead to vulnerability. Yet others seem to think it is time the orders of chaos be more direct in their missions to spread the word of the Great Savior of Ravok. For now, the white eyes have settled upon Nyka and her fertile bay.

Players: Let's build a road! We'll need all sorts to help with the endeavor: craftsmen, cooks, medics, laborers, scouts and guards. This will be one moderated thread but also has the ability to spin off many other unmoderated subplots. Feel free to discuss your ideas with your STs via PM.

Ebonstryfe & Black Sun: This will make for excellent job threads. ;)

ST: Prophet

North Ravok Outpost :
A Work In Progess -Six days ride north of the Southern Outpost lies the North Ravok Outpost. It is little more than a camp behind relatively well-fortified walls. Now that the Ebonstryfe and Blacksun have finished the appropriate preparations, they are seeking workers, craftsmen, and business owners to come to the Outpost to help make it more more stable and defensive. The hopes are to open up coastal trade with other cities.

Rumors of the help needed from citizens, and noncitizens, alike spread through the city. It seems any are welcome if they are able to pull their weight and be useful. It is heard that a new Shrine to Rhysol is constructed there, a new beer cart that may become a tavern has arrived, that a renown hunter has retired to a hut there, and that the Paladin Samara Alenta is finding ways to make many people more useful.

This location will be developed IC through PC efforts. The more any PC helps out here, the more influence they gain at the Outpost, as well as other rewards tied into the location. This will be a new style of Checkmark Development, and is an experiment we're trying. If you're interested in more details, please let us know.

✯ Rumors of the Ravosalamen ✯
To get around Ravok, one will inevitably end up in one of the sleek vessels that cruise through the canals. The drivers are known as Ravosalamen. They come in all shapes and sizes but know more about what goes on in the city than just about everyone aside from the top brass of the city's main organizations. These public servants talk amongst themselves but also to their fares. Sometimes, the conversations expose a dirty secret about an affluent member of society or reveal the true purpose of a mundane structure. There are also times when the gossip is just hot air. Regardless of one's station in Ravok, it's always wise to keep an ear to the canals.

Completely investigate every rumor and receive a special IC token.

Rumors :
"I hope you aren't one of them damn dinner nuts, looking to go to that Catherbian House. You know the one right? Over by the Bell Tower, with all the Bobcat statues and the like? I keep getting the short end of the pole on those fares. I drop them off, come back later to take them home, and there's always one or two of them gone. I lose the full amount I could make. Utter shyke. I don't get it. Maybe they just stay the night. They say that Sorka Catherbian is quite the looker, with a penchant for both men and women. Or maybe his cooking is just so amazing his guests can't move. Maybe I'll go to the next one, they're every ten days like clockwork."

"Gotta love livin' in the city, not like those ruffians on the shore. We ain't got them pests that are plaguing them. I heard entire food stores have gotten eaten up in a single night. Gonna put them outta business if it ain't fixed soon."

"It's a good thing you're in my boat today. Many of the other ravosalas are busy fetching people from ships stranded mere stone throws away from the docks. Seems that sails are being shredded to ruin during even softer breezes. Gotta be magic I tell ya. Hopefully the guard find the mage responsible and flay him. Just rude to cripple ships like that, ya know?"

"You look like a good person, so please listen to what I say. Do not be out alone at night. Something is killing people that are by themselves after sundown. Their bodies are discolored, contorted in pain and agony. The guard are trying to keep it quiet, probably to keep people from panicking while they figure it out. But its been days and there doesn't seem to be any leads."

"Hurry up, come on, don't dawdle. I gotta get home and pick up the kids. That new show, the puppeteer is out and about today. Been trying to keep tabs, because he keeps moving around his performance and my kids are dying to see it. By Rhysol's balls could you be any slower? I got to go."

"Acolyte Luluria has returned from her mission to the savages that live in the Sea of Grass! I have missed her sermons so much, she had so much fire in her voice. Surely she'll be a Priestess soon after a successful mission. Bringing the good word of our lord to those horse petchers that don't know better is one of the most noble things anyone can do. I bet she brought back some slaves too. They say those barbarians, Drykas I think they are called, are great for handling animals. Maybe they'll find usefulness at Lakeshore. Or even the Northern Outpost. It's so good to have her back."
