Spring 20th, 506 A.V.

When Loken had first set foot past the gaping maw, the Ano Cultist had become awestruck in the most terrifying of ways. Alvadas was a city that lacked all inherent logic or structure. The locations of its buildings would suddenly change on a whim each and every day. It initially made his life miserable since he was a man of punctuality.

Loken would leave his room at the inn three bells early, but still show up four bells late to any destination he wished to attend. On he best of days, his reasons for being late were like children's fantasy stories. 'I'm late because the flowers hugged my shoes.' or 'The cats wanted me to paint their spoons.'

It was maddening.

However, Loken knew that he needed to find some stability. He did his best to control his emotions, but needed a proper outlet for them. Loken's mentor, Pon Haylen of the Ano Cult, had always tried to teach him the value of investment - investment in development, investment in establishment, in land, in entertainment... in short, investments in items or institutions of worth to the greater whole. and yet, 'worth' always held a startlingly different meaning to different people.

Case in point was how Loken now found himself standing on the blood stained sands of an arena. The sounds of countless thunderous voices peeled out of the Akeldama Colosseum as Loken awaited his moment of combat. His fingers gingerly clasped around the hilt of his unique blade known as a tiger hook sword. Having devoted himself to finding balance in life through martial prowess, he knew he could find stability through use of combat. And since Alvadas loved its entertainments, then the Cultist would invest his time and efforts into The Akeldama Colosseum; because such a location would always exist in Alvadas...

Loken's normally formal appearance had molded into a sort of business casual. His black hair was still finely combed back, but he allowed his normal clean shaven face to grow out into a nice goatee since he didn't wish to waste time shaving. He watched as people hurried through the stands, a vast majority of them each holding a variety of oddly colored and patterned parasols. He ignored the populations current eccentricities as another person joined him on the blooded sands.

Almost on cue, everyone suddenly went quiet as they started to spin their umbrellas like a rainbow of pinwheels. That was when the voice of Shale Tarren rang out from where ever Colosseum runner made his announcements.

""Today, ladies an gents, we are gather here to witness two new combatants fight until their opponents is unable to continue... or death. You're first combatant is the man in black, carrying such a brutal looking hook. His name, Lock!"

Once his name was called the spectators all began to cheer, heckle, or talk among themselves. To Loken, it sounded like a hive of bees had been kicked. Loken did not wish for his real name to be spread out around the city, so went with the stage name of 'Lock', while not to far from his real name, it would allow him to separate his business from his personal life.

“And his opponent, from the deepest regions of Kalea! A most fearsome of zith who's name is, Shred!”

Loken had already been staring down the dark figure as the Zith began to unfurl its wings from how it wore them like a cloak, showing off the entire wingspan of them. As Shred raised his hands into the air, Loken took note of the sharpened piece of ivory on the tip of the spear in its right hand. It looked like a dagger of some type, but more specifically a sharpened piece of a humanoid rib bone.

If that was all it had, Loken instantly assumed that the beast had to be adept at close ranged fighting. "A puncture weapon, about a six feet in length. That gives me the advantage." He thought to himself considering he had a sword with a curved hook that could trap the spear. In response to the zith raising it hands, Loken raised his sword into the air to appease the crowd. His eyes followed along the edges of the arena where spectators along the front row all looked down while placing shouting at the fighters bellow.

Shale Tarren took that as a sign that each combatant was ready then shouted out.

""Let the contest begin!"

That look in an opponent's eyes? That was his new logic. In their eyes he could see fear, could see anger, could see all those emotions he never allowed to overtake him-and when they lashed out at him he could almost feel the emotion. It was like they were trying to beat their emotions out of themselves and into him. However, it was that emotion which would inevitably lead them into making mistakes.

The Zith charge at him with its arm outstretched, keeping that ivory spear point directed at him like a lance. That action caused Loken to take a formal fighting stance. His dominant right foot stepped slightly forward with most of his body weight place primarily on it. That cause his trailing foot to stand on the ball of the foot with his boot heel slightly elevated off the floor.

He held the tiger hook sword in a dual-handed grip at his right hip, angling it forward about thirty degrees from vertical so the length of the blade crossed his body to protect it, resulting in the curve of the hook to linger around his left shoulder.

The stance allowed him the agility to roll out of the way or step back on his foot to create a stable foundation. As he watched the Zith continue its charge, his gaze took in the rest of Shred's body. The feral Zith made it all the easier for to read its body language by wearing very little. Exposing their body like that made it simple to see that flicker as a muscle tensed. It also showed Loken that it wore no armor. "No armor? My fists and kicks will be very effective."

He mused to himself as the tip of the spear entered into his effective attack range; his arms length pulse a meter for the sword. Loken had a simple plan which was devoted towards defense that he now acted upon.

He shifted the hook of his sword to caress the neck of the spears shaft, hooking it as he pressed his blade against it to guide the spear head off course away from his body. As the Zith continued to charge forward, he guided the blade of the tiger hook down the shaft towards the Zith's grip on the weapon.

On pure instinct, the Zith let go of the spear to keep from having its hand chopped off.

"It worked." He thought to himself as he pressed downward on his front foot, placing all of his weight onto it as his back left leg lashed out in a roundhouse kick towards Shade's face. The sound of his boot bashing against the temple of its skull cause a loud thud which sent the entire front row into a frenzy. It was clear that there were hardly any people rooting for the Zith, which was not surprising considering their reputation.

Shade deliberately flapped its wings, sending it into a sudden upward direction out of reach of his sword. Loken expected it to remain in the sky, but was shocked to find that one of its wings had several intense gashes on it. He could even see a few large holes through it right wing. "Arrow damage?" The Zith could not keep itself in flight for too long, only able to use that first strong flap to send it into a controlled glide.

"That's why you're name is Shred. You're wings are Shredded to pieces... I wonder, is that a name you picked? Or was it given to you?" He started to speak about that defect in attempt to make his opponent angry. The zith landed several yards away from him with one hand caressing its forehead. It then started to make several squeaking sounds followed by a continuous deep rumble. "Was that its language? Does he even speak common?"

Loken began to feel disheartened as he started to come to the realization that his opponent was already heavily wounded. The Zith appeared to be strong, feral, but acted like any animal would when put into this situation. The Zith did lash out, but wanted to keep its distant from a threat that the beast perceived would instantly kill it since it could not use its normal areal combat tactics.

Loken did not often feel insulted, because that led to misplaced judgments, but he truly did feel insulted. He stepped into this place of combat with ever expectation to test his full ability against an opponent who was his equal; or his better. But as his eyes slowly followed the Zith, he watched as it did several jumps to hop up in the air then flap its wings to press it self up against the walls of the Colosseum.

That was when the voice of Shale Tarren began to erupt over the crowd.

"Look at how Shred cowers away from Lock! The warrior must have a gaze that drives fear into the winged creatures very soul! Look! That man's death glare is keeping the Zith from even flying... paralyzed with fear!"

Those words caused the Colosseum to erupt into a defining cheered, all focused towards supporting Loken. Many of the people started to chant his name all while spinning their colorful parasols. Loken did not know what games Shale was playing with his life, but if the Kelvic wanted him to be supported by the Colosseum, he would not go against the plan since it was in his favor at the moment. This was what he was getting paid to do, so Loken erupted into a forward sprint towards the Zith with the hook sword lowered into a downward angle, ready to preform an upward slice at Shred once he was in range.

Shred also began to run in an attempt to gain some distance away from the man with a sword, following the wall as the ZIth clearly appeared to be in a state of panic. The sounds of laughter began to blend with the cheers he was being given. It made it clear that they were all enjoying the ZIth's suffering. 'Look at the coward!', 'Petcher should never have entered the fight', and various other derogatory remarks could be heard coming from those people sitting in the front row above the pit.

As his boots kicked up the red stands behind him, he started to understand that the crowd could not see the wounds on its black wings from a far distance. All they could see was a supposedly healthy Zith running from him. When Loken caught up to Shred, the Zith's back was to him as it was running away. Shred had just entered into a small jump, its body in the air as it tried to glide away as Loken swung the tiger hook sword diagonally upward to use the outer bladed edge of the hook like an axe. The hook connected at Shred's back right hip then preceded to slash upward towards its left shoulder. As the blade followed that bath, it ran up the Zith's shoulder blade to cut through the base of its left wing.

The upward slice sent a visceral spay of blood mixed with specks of hunks of removed flesh to cover a few people sitting up on the front row. At the moment of first blood, the Colosseum erupted into madness. The sound was so loud that it was intense, but Loken ignored it as he was taken by a tunnel vision. He dedicated himself towards ending a life, so that was the only thing that mattered.

Loken could not even hear the dreadful cry of pain his opponent made as Shred's body was knocked down from the air. The zith slammed face first into the ground, but quickly tried to both crawl away and stand up at the same time. Loken did not let that happen. With a dual hammer grip, he made a downward horizontal swing that slammed into the Shred's right leg at the ankle. He did not want his target to run away again, so removed its foot. He could feel the bone snapping as his blade cut through it. The vibrations of its tendons separating all giving emotion to his weapon, which acted like an extension of his own arms to cause him to feel a great manner of excitement as adrenaline coursed through his system.

Shred screamed out in various sounds that he assumed was the ZIth's native language, but at that moment, his attention drifted up towards the people all standing up around the edge of the pit. He did not know why, but they all started to make an intense gesture with their hands. He had to narrow his eyes to see that they were pointing their thumbs towards the ground. It meaning of the gesture was immediately obvious as he looked down at Shred.

Loken watched at the Zith continued to try to crawl away. It appeared to be in pain, but fought its fear as best it could. From its body language alone, the new Colosseum fighter witnessed that if Shred was healthy, it would have put up the best of fights since it looked like it did not want to give up.

Loken walked over it, then lifted his boot to stomp his boot heel into the area between its shoulder blades. It halted Shred's movement completely. Then as an extra measure, he lifted his boot to press his heel down against the area that he'd cut at the base of its wing. He could not hear much, but he did manage to hear the crunch as he crushed a bone along the shoulder blade and the wing. Shred writhed in pain under of having its wing ruined. It made a sound that was not pain, but something more reminiscent to a whimper. While it was a physical pain, the Shred reacted in a way that made it clear that that act damaged the creatures pride more than anything.

Shred just gave up after that point then laid its forehead against the ground. Loken did not let it wallow in its pathetic, he brought the blade up in the same way he had used to cut off its foot, then brought the blade down along the side of its neck. He used more force than what he had used to remove the foot, not knowing how much force it would take to fully sever the spine. The hook dug deep enough to break through it, but the force of the hook stopped soon after. Always the perfectionist, he gave it one more swing to remove its head completely.

Shale Tarren wasted no time to manipulate the hype to advertise the next fight. Loken listened intently, but most of all of the things the Kelvic said were vague statements that made Loken sound unbeatable. He narrowed his eyes as the man over sold his abilities. The Ano Cultst looked down at the blade in his hand at dripped with blood, then removed his foot from the back of the ZIth's body. "He is setting me up to fight someone who is going to be clearly more skilled than me." That was his only thought as he turned to walk out of the pit to go speak to Shale in private. The last thing he did before leaving the pit was to make an empty slice of the blade to remove the excess blood that covered the edge of the hook, painting the sands with fresh blood.

When he approached the Colosseum owner, the man canted his head upon noticing Loken had not put his sword away. "All payments are non-negotiable. You will get paid exactly what all Beginner are paid." Loken lifted the hook sword which caused Shale to absently rest a hand on the whip at his side. When Loken lifted placed the sword into the weapons harness on his back, Shale wiggled several of his fingers then played it off as if he did not misjudge the situation. Dealing with killers and warriors all day, he never knew who would snap after having to slay someone. "Payment is not the problem, I am aware of the deal we agreed too. I want to know why you had me fight someone who started out at a supreme disadvantage?"

Shale smirked as the Colosseum owner held up a hand to absently wave off the question. "Noticed that, did you?" The Kelvic then stepped closer towards Loken to speak in whispers. "You are a nobody. And people do not come to see 'nobodies'. This is the first lesson all fighters need to know. Keep the crowds happy. Otherwise, you will find yourself in a battle with the odds stacked against you." The threat laced within those words did not escape his notice, but Loken made sure to not express any acknowledgment of it on his face. When faced with a threat, he wanted to leave the one who said it with fear of the unknown.

"Noted." He said stoically. Loken had nothing further to say to the man as he turned to walk away. He took several steps away from Shale before glancing back over his shoulder. " Many declarations contradict the conditions that allow them to be declared. " It was a simple logic contradiction riddle that Ano Cultists were tested with during their studies. Loken just felt like leaving the man with something to think about, because things often spoken randomly are what keep others up at night.

Loken could not see Shale's face when the man started to think about it, but he could hear the man muttering to himself in annoyed thought as the Cultist walked away.
