How not to throw punches

86th of Summer 518AV

Just as the storm begun, abruptly it ended. It seemed as if the nightmare was over yet no one still had any idea what caused the blood red colour surrounding the misty peaks. Some shrugged off the freak weather conditions, deeming other matters such as repairing their homes and businesses to take priority over things they could not control. Other's sought wisdom from Lhavit's patron gods.

Raeyn was precisely that man. Able to find his way now, oddly far better than before the storm took place, he was at the end of his rope. Only gods could help him now. Only they could make sense of the strange things which befell the Inarta. He no longer wished to understand where the voiced inside his head came from. A single moment free of the deafening chatter would be all he prayed for now. A day to put back the pieces of his mind for if it carried on like this, he didn't know how much longer he'd be able to last on this mortal plane. With fingernails bitten down to blood he clasped his hands together upon the altar of Syna and spent the day preying though muffled teardrops.

Raeyn wasn't the only one who was loosing his mind over the bad luck that plagues the city, this season. An aura of despair enveloped everyone; from those who lost their family and loved ones to Zith, to the poor bastards who had the misfortune of overgiving. Many even those who suffered little more than a cold partook in the general, post-storm melancholia.

How not to throw punches

Postby Raeyn on June 20th, 2018, 7:07 pm

Raeyn had been slowly making his way home in the rain that evening. Keeping his head down, the light drizzle coated his hair and clothes with little beads of rain, disguising cheeks wet with tears. With eyes as red as those of a scholar who had spent as week reading with nothing but the light of a candle and a lack of sleep, Raeyn must have looked truly pitiful to all passers by.

Seeing mara was not an option. He couldn't trust himself around her. Logic told him he was going mad but if he was to do something in the mirage of a moment; the thought was unthinkable. Family was more important to him than anything. More important even than himself. And though this love of them he refused to unleash his misery on them, deeming it necessary instead to conceal and contain it to the best of his ability. But how he missed her. Even her antics and relentless teasing, that only a twin could subject their sibling to without any consequences, he now started to remember fondly.

A kind word and the knowledge that someone understood where he stood on the emotional scale was all he needed to get by. But the one person who understood him had not seen him for over half a season. For a man who cared little to keep company, Raeyn had never been more lonely.

The entire way home he had clung so desperately to reality. It seemed like with every step however, it continued to slip away. The constant chatter in his ear was as loud as the pounding of rain on windows just a day ago.

He passed a couple male figures in the mist. Neither of them did he pay attention to nor truly care but he could have sworn one of them spoke to him. "Filthy red-head." it said.

"Shut up." Raeyn said to himself with a broken voice, shaking his head. He didn't know if they were figments of his imagination anymore. Perhaps the figures weren't even there and he was pleading to cold cobbles. Perhaps his own mind was picking fights with him. "Leave me alone. I've had enough!"

"Spill the blood, watch it flood the streets. They'll kill you if you don't kill them first"

"Stop it!" he screamed, covering his hands with both palms and dropping to his knees, pressing his forehead against the cobbles. Raeyn was indeed at the end of his rope. He was drowning in a sea with no life boat.

How not to throw punches

Postby Raeyn on June 20th, 2018, 7:29 pm

Few things would puzzle a man more than crossing paths with a stranger who would then immediately drop to their knees and start hollering nonsensically. That was precisely what confused Talos and Jaren so very much. The two men had been smoking some pipe weed, minding their own business and nattering in a back alley, away from prying eyes so that their conversation wouldn't be found out by their wives who had a falling out earlier in the season. They had enough troubles of their own without getting into those of their women. Yet somehow the face of misfortune itself crossed their path.

Seeing a man dressed quite so well in such a tragic state was quite something in a city where looks did matter. The men's first thought was that he was drunk. Why else would he be acting so oddly? But then he started screaming at them, cursing them out as if they had somehow wronged him by minding their own business.

"Hey, fella. Relax. What's the matter with you?" Talos walked over to the redhead, placing a compassionate arm on his shoulder in a genuine manner of concern. But to his surprise the man flinched away from his as if his touch burned like fire in the rain.

How not to throw punches

Postby Raeyn on June 20th, 2018, 7:53 pm

He was genuinely afraid. Unable to discern the intentions of the man he fell backwards onto the damp cobbles. Eyes wide in fear and heartbeat quickening, Raeyn felt the rush of adrenaline in his veins. His head spun. Talos' second attempt at helping the poor, unfortunate soul, was also mistaken for an attack as Raeyn's fist found it's way towards the man's stomach. Inside his head the voices laughed hysterically.

Just a few moments later it was Jaren who came to his friend's rescue. He grabbed the dizzy Inarta by the collar, hoisting him up against the wall and screaming in his face. "Are you insane? What is your problem? Get your sorry ass out of my sight before I report you to the city guard, petch!"

"He's going to kill you. Destroy him. Save your life."

In the heat of the moment, the Inarta really truly did believe he was going to loose his life if he did not retaliate. If anything the hands around his throat ensured him of this. Desperately he clung for air, grasping at Jaren's finger in desperation to free himself. His head swung forward, forehead finding that of his attacker in a painful clash as he felt the fingers release him. Scrambling to his feet as quick as he could Raeyn ran at the man and used all his weight to tackle him to the ground.

Hands formed fists as he threw punches at the confused and angered Jaren. One even made contact with the man's face albeit it did do far less damage than the punch of any man even remotely competent in the art of unarmed combat. Raeyn was weak and untrained and what took place was far more reminiscent to two fats clawing at each other viciously than a fight of angry men.

How not to throw punches

Postby Raeyn on June 25th, 2018, 11:11 pm

The Inarta felt as strong hands grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back up. Limp, as if drunken on violence, he grabbed for anything to free himself with but no weapon came to his grip. Like a cat, scuffed haphazardly by it's owner he clawed at mid air, swearing loudly.

Talos shook the read head. "What the petch is wrong with you boy." he screamed in his face. 'til this point convinced that Raeyn could still have some sense talked into him.

Bit it was as if Raeyn didn't hear him. In his head the words looped on repeat, taking priority over all the other sounds within earshot. "He's gonna kill you. He's gonna kill you. Defend yourself little Inarta man. Kill him first before he kills you."

Had he grown stupid over the season? That certainly seemed the case for instead of calming down and coming to his senses he swung a blind fist at Talos. A fist that missed quite spectacularly so. It did however cause the man to let go of him. If a fight was what he was after, Talos would give him one. The worst that could some out of it would be a few scratches and a hot soup for dinner from an attentive wife, he was sure of it. The Inarta didn't really looking like an imposing opponent. Not to a man who had spent a lifetime laying brick and mortar.

Growing enraged quickly by the, in his opinion, unprovoked brawl, Talos was the next one to throw a punch. A closed fist made contact with Raeyn's jaw as pain surged though him. Once again he had fallen to his knees, the taste of iron in his mouth. Was it... was it his own blood? That taste confirmed all that those voices warned against.

Raeyn no longer looked for a motive, no longer questioned why the men hit him. His internal timer was set to self preservation even though he was completely unaware that his opponents saw the situation quite differently to him. If he was going to go down, he wouldn't go down without a fight. There was a will to live in the Inarta hardly rivalled by many others. After all such great ambition carried him though 'til this point.

With a roar Raeyn lunged for the man once more, fists flying haphazardly as if he was blind. And blinded perhaps he was by rage, by voiced that whispered in his ear, confirmed his delusions and cheered him on. None or the punches landed. Talos was not only stronger and quicker than him but also more experienced. He ducked or blocked every one of those punches. With the last one missing just across the man's shoulder, he used Raeyn's failure against him.

The Inarta felt a fist dig into his stomach, churning his gut. He doubled over with a cry, feeling tears fly from his cheeks and onto the pavement. For an agonising moment he dangled there. A moment that seemed to have no end. Eventually however he slid onto the ground, his knees buckled beneath him and he coughed painfully though tears of anguish and anger. How could he be this pathetic? How could he be unable to stand his ground so?

How not to throw punches

Postby Raeyn on June 25th, 2018, 11:33 pm

Raeyn knelt before the two men, clutching his stomach and shaking. A wave of self pity came over him. But he wasn't done yet. He swore at the both of them with words more foul than those of a Sunberth sailor. Such venom in his words that one would wonder where he'd even heard of such disgraceful language.

"Haven't ye had enough yet?" asked Talos, taking a menicing step towards the redhead.

"He's gonna kill you. Kill him first."

In spite of the pain and trembling, Raeyn pulled himself up to his feet. His stance, wide to support himself. Raisisng his fists into the air he placed them one in front of the other, measuring both men up between them, shielding his own face. A sort of hap-hazard defensive stance. Jaren and Talos would have laughed at his if it was any other situation but the confusion of the situation and the desperation with which the Inarta came at them was a little too much to facilitate such foolishness.

They looked between each other. "Let's finish this." said Jaren as he nodded, approaching the Inarta rather cautiously. He too was weighing up his opponent albeit Raeyn had already proved he wasn't much of a fighter.

The man's fist recoiled and then lunged full force at Raeyn's face with the finess of a boxer. Raeyn just about managed to duck out of the way of the blow, being clipped by it rather than hit full force. Yes his cheek and ear ached from the friction of the fist against them but at least all his teeth were still there.

In retaliation he flung another desperate array of punches of his own and once again he messed up every single one of them only for Jaren to undercut his legs and land the Inarta square on the cobbles once more. From his advantage point he grabbed Raeyn by the hair and slammed his face again the cobbles for good luck, not once by twice.

The crack of cartilage echoed in Raeyn's ears. A pain unrivalled by anything he had ever heard before tore though his face as he screamed bloody murder. His nose was broken and blood as red as his hair now smeared his cheeks, flowed down his neck and pooled in his mouth. As Jareth pulled him up once more he was disoriented. Hand hung down uselessly by his side.

"Please, enough." Raeyn pleaded, spitting out his own blood.

"Perhaps you shouldn't go around picking fights then you shikester." said Talos standing beside his friend with knuckles covered in blood both his own and the redhead's. If he had been a pitiful sight before, now Raeyn was almost unrecognisable by anything else than his hair.

How not to throw punches

Postby Raeyn on August 24th, 2018, 12:15 pm

A peaceful break from the storm was quite a welcome gift from the gods to a man who hates the thunder more than he hated nosy cats when in his Kelvic form. Beneath the cover of nightfall, in the skin of a fuzzy little rat, Sasha snuck out a twitching nose, to explore the damage the storm had done to his home city. And more so, perhaps, to see if anything laying about between debris would peak his interest. Little did he realise just what a gem of fire and red blood he'd find.

The sounds of struggle and yelling had reached ears that missed nothing. For a rat had to always be on the highest alert. And had the young Kelvic little more sense, perhaps he'd have turned around and bolted in the opposite direction, but small and insignificant as he was, he had snuck his way in that precise direction. Soon enough the smell of blood caressed his senses, a sight of pure horror reached his eyes.

From where he peaked, hidden inside a pipe that had fallen from one of the buildings at the very corner of the alley, Sasha saw two men mercilessly beating another, a red head. Somebody he recognised. The Kelvic was as sure as anything that he had seen the Inarta around the Twilight Tower, where he worked. He knew his name even, although the mage never dignified him with as little as a 'hello' even. But what was he to do? She he just leave the man at the mercy of his attackers? Sasha knew not what the Inarta had done to deserve such a beating that left him bloodied and bruised on the cobbles like a mouse, at the mercy of two large cats. But he didn't question it either. Kindness was only ever true kindness if done for selfless reasons, or so he thought. And thus the little rat turned on his heal and raced back though the pipe, around the corner of the alley and towards the nearest main street. Though the streets were empty there had to be somebody there who could help the pacifist little Kelvic.

Luck had his back, it seemed, for barely did Sasha turn the corner, he'd almost throw himself right beneath the boot of a Shinya, certainly on a patrol, or perhaps returning from such. Wasting little time, with his heart beating in his ears, the Kelvic's skin rippled and in a moment, where the fuzzy fur of a rat was, now knelt a naked boy. In Leth's light, his coals black eyes twinkled with desperation.

Raeyn would remember very little in days to come. Though the haze of blood and confusion, the fight of scattering heels of boots would linger in his memory. The booming voice he did not recognise. The warmth of another, the soothing voice of his saviour. It would all become a muddle, like a dream interwoven with reality into a strange fabric that bore barely a resemblance to what truly happened. He'd gotten lucky this time. And in days to come he'd find himself praying there wouldn't be another time.
