26th of Summer 518AV

Such was a thing about the state of paranoia, that once it sets in it's mighty hard to make it leave. Not even the thickest of armour nor cold, sharp blades can protect a man from the demons inside his own head. In the dense fog, all manner of unthinkable monsters hide, even if Raeyn could not see them.

The Inarta found hiself counting his blessings once the heart breaking rumour reached his ears. The news of the wife, whose husband was brutally taken from her by the Zith, had spread though Lhavit faster than summer wildfires. Even one as secluded as Raeyn himself could not evade the sadness. And though his heart ached for the woman - it couldn't have been easy to witness the death of one's loved one after all. He couldn't even fathom if that has happened to Mara - there was only one thought on his mind: thank Syna that wasn't me.

Suddenly, with this event, the dangers of the unforgiving came seeping into the city. The protective illusion of the walls was shattered. The freedom loving people of Lhavit were faced with the fact of their own mortality. Their own venerability at the hand of the savage beasts that were the Zith. But theres always somebody that profits from a tragedy like this. No wars would ever be fought if there was no profit to be made somewhere down the grapevine. And in this case the lucky shyke who'se pockets would be filled with the blood money of an innocent man and the tears of his wife, was no one other than Wullis himself - the arms merchant.

It only seemed sensible to Raeyn, who had made the habit of bringing his bow with him wherever he went, to have a second line of defence on him at all times. Yes he was a good enough archer with quite the competent aim. But in close quarters he'd be useless in a stand oh against one of those winged shykesters. Not that armed he'd stand much of a chance either but Raeyn always envisioned himself someone who wouldn't go down without a fight. Why leave himself venerable when he could at least take some measure to keep himself better protected?

Suffice to day Raeyn gave into the fear without question. Like many others he found himself at the unusually busy arms shop that very afternoon. And like many others he wasn't there to just browse.

Upon entering the shall, crowded space, Raeyn found himself surprised at just how dark it was. The dense mists outside blocked so much light that the only window in the place just couldn't quite illuminate all of the stock. In absence of Syna's graceful rays, Wullis had to do with a bunch of candles that lit up the space with hues of orange and red. Sure the darkness and dancing shadow hid some of the shabbiness of the old interiors but they did make the racks a little harder to navigate.

Raeyn's eyes trailed the walls as he weaved though the crowd of customers. He wasn't really quite sure what he was looking for but he sure as anything was looking for something. Dressed in his usual splendour with the luxurious fur-lined cloak draped across his shoulders, the sigh of him instantly caught the attention of the shopkeeper. It was only good form to tend to those who looked like they had kina to spend.

Cold steel

Raeyn waited patiently until Wullis was done with his last customer, letting on with little more than a look that he indeed was interested in a little guidance though the stock of various weapons. In the mean time he trailed his fingers across second hand steel, held small swords to check the weights. But it was quite obvious that close combat weaponry was not his forte. The Inarta barely knew what he was doing but he looked mighty fine doing it anyway.

"Ah. An afternoon, though I wouldn't exactly call it good." said the hunter once Wullis finally approached him. "At least seeing you again is pleasure enough."

"Likewise, mr Raeyn. Though I wasn't expecting to see you back so soon. Barely a quarter of the season has passed. Have you already ran out of arrows? I could have sworn last time you bought at least five more than usual."

Wullis was pleasant enough. A small talk champion and unlike many of the other shop keepers in Lhavit Raeyn seldom found him boring. A man who kept tabs on the pulse of the city. he was always someone the Inarta could come to for just the right amount of more or less delightful gossip. And he truly appreciated that the man never spoke too much or too little. Always just the right amount. Sure he could have done with some refinement or refurbishing of the inside of his shop but then again Raeyn wasn't one to tell a man how to run his business.

"That's quite alright. I still have a plenty to spare." Raeyn smiled, tossing his sight around the room. "Business if booming I see."

"Aye. Has been like this for a few days now. Barely a moment to sit down and eat my lunch." retorted Wullis in his usual calm manner. Though there was a pleasant smile on his face, one could see that behind his eyes, the cogs of his brain were working on figuring out just how best to advise his red haired customer. No one could ever accuse the shop keeper of not being a truly remarkable businessman.

"Have you heard of what happened yesterday? It's all anyone's been talking about."

A groan of affirmation came from the old shopkeeper. Who hasn't come to know of the poor murdered man by now? "I hear he was a good chap. Left two young tykes and a wife. It's a tragedy when children have to grow up without a father. I hear she hasn't stopped crying since it happened. Parents in law are having to sort out funeral arrangements b'coss the gal is out of her mind with grief."

"I say. Nobody can blame her. The whole city is grief stricken." A moment of silence was exchanged between the men as if in respect of the grieving family. Even as cold and heartless a man as Raeyn was, he pitied them. The very expression on his face spoke of it louder than words could. "I suppose you know what I'm here for."

"If not arrow then..."

"I'm looking for a blade. You know... just incase."

Hering the hunter's words, Wullis arched a brow. He had never thought he'd hear those words from the Inarta, whom granted he barely knew, but considered himself quite prolific at grasping what people were about. It's what kept his business alive for so many decades after all. People and swords were similar after all. Each had a distinct personality. And matching people with a weapon of their dreams, even if used, was what Wullis did best.

"Well well, mr Raeyn. Lets see what I can do for you." he said, taking the Inarta over to a rack of swords and letting out a long "Hmmmmm." as he studied it closely.

"I'm not looking for anything large and ostentatious. Small. Small is good. There's only so much I'm willing to carry around at once."

"I see. Well..." the shop keeper instantly pulled Raeyn to yet another rack. It seemed none of the weapons in the previous one he deemed to reach the standard of his refined customer. By Wyllis'es eye, and quite rightly so, Raeyn needed more than a standard, battered knife. A fashionable man needed a fashionable weapon.

The next rack was far more to Raeyn's liking. Baring an array of hand and half hand swords, each decorated with hardly elaborate but tasteful hilt, it was a place to start. Without much hesitation the shopkeeper pulled out one of the silver weapons and placed it in Raeyn's hands; hilt in the right and blade balancing against the left.

Suffice to say Raeyn couldn't deny that it was a handsome blade. Though the edge was a little dull, it wasn't something that couldn't easily be fixed with a good grind against a grindstone. And in it's smooth silvery finish of the blade, he could see his handsome reflection which really was the best thing about it. But it was heavy. Well balanced but cumbersome especially for a man who prided himself in the art of finesse when it came to battle. He was a hunter not a warrior.

Raeyn didn't even have to speak. Wullis saw the disappointment in his eyes before the thought could even cross the hunter's mind. Almost immediately he took the blade from Raeyn much to the man's surprise and admiration. If only Raeyn had the ability to read the minds of others with such ease perhaps social situations could be far easier for him.

"Smaller perhaps?" Raeyn asked as politely as he could, worried about offending Wullis.

"Smaller you say? Hmm. I may have just the kind of thing you're looking for. Come follow me." said Wullis, taking the hunter by the hand and parting the crowds inside the shop for them to pass though. It took some squeezing but alas the two made their way to the counter.

Cold steel

Soon enough a fabulous array of used daggers rose from behind the counter as Wullis placed two wooden and glass topped cases in front of his Inarta customer. Raeyn's eyes studied every one of the small weapons in their various degrees of splendour. Some were really quite simple and small enough to fit in a sleeve. Others were a little larger, a little more ornate. Some with just one sharp edge of slicing a hunter's prey whilst others were sharp on both edges of the cold steel blades.

"This one, mr Raeyn, I think would suit you splendidly." With those words Wullis opened the glass lid and pulled out a humble but well crafted dagger. About the length of the hunter's forearm, maybe a little smaller, the double edged blade came to a pin sharp point. The handle bulged in the middle, seemingly easy to grip and was covered with black leather. A large teardrop pummel balanced the dagger. Both it and the slightly curved hand guard were a gold accent, certainly coated, with modest embellishments. Tasteful, not quite over the top but not easy to loose in a crowd was this blade, just like Raeyn. Yes Wullis certainly had a good understanding of great salesmanship.

He twirled the blade around his finger until he gripped the sharp and and passed it by the pummel safely to the Inarta who watched with admiration. It was really an impressive trick. Perhaps one day he'd learn to do so himself.

"She's perfect." Said Raeyn admiring the craftsmanship. Deadly sharp edges and a steel surface in which he could admire his own reflection just as he did so in the eyes of women. He could barely believe the dagger was second hand. Either it saw little combat in it's lifetime or Wullis was some mysterious wizard of the weapon world for having managed to restore the blade so well. Perhaps it was simply replaced and only the hilt remained of the original weapon. Regardless Raeyn was certainly impressed.

"Isn't she just? A man like you with your bow and that dagger will ward off any unsavoury types eyeing you up." A little complement never hurt when making a sale.

"Do you really think so?" asked Raeyn who'se ego was ballooning before the shopkeeper's very eyes.

"I'm certain." nodded Wullis. "You know, I do know a thing or two about handling such a weapons. For a small price I could give you a lesson or two, just to get your started."

Raeyn didn't need much persuading indeed. He had fallen head first for the charm of his new acquisition and the tactics of it's previous owner. He could be certainly returning soon enough to learn the way of the dagger. Soon enough Kina was exchanged and the hunter was Ready to be on his way home before Wullis stopped him.

"Don't forget your bag, me Raeyn. You almost left it." he said handing him the familiar brown satchel.

Cold steel

Without much thought, Raeyn tossed the weapon inside and slung the bag over his shoulder. It was only once he came home and laid his eyes on the bag that lay on his bed, untouched since the morning that he remembered he had never brought a bag with him in the first place. What a silly mistake? Certainly one he could laugh about when returning the thing to Wullis and leave the grotuitous task of finding the bag's owner to him. After all it was just an innocent mistake. It's not like Raeyn had meant to take the possession of someone else home with him.

Placing the bag on the table, Rayen reached his hand inside, not even quite thinking about it, to retrieve his sword. But once no steel nor leather could be felt, even after some considerable rummaging, his fingers found a small, cold shape around which his fist soon enough clenched. What Raeyn had pulled out of the bag wasn't at all his newly purchased dagger but a small necklace on a chain. A dull crystal lay in a crucible of gold with wire filigree decorating it. A pendant on a chain. One the Inarta could certainly wear around his neck had the stone not been quite so cloudy and dull looking.

He felt a little bad for finding himself in possession of his bag. Someone could have been looking for it right now. But the task of retrieving his new dagger was still at hand.

It really took quite the amount of time of pulling out very random things, most of which were complete garbage. Yet never had he pulled out the same thing twice from this strange strange bag. Only after he found himself quite worried and desperate for the thing he had just spent money on, that the weapon finally came out of the bag. Very slowly and very timidly the Inarta's mind grasped what it was that he was holding. For it was no ordinary backpack. This thing was magic in all senses of the word. An item he would certainly remain in possession of having realised it's nature. Not only would it come in useful but perhaps he could devote some of his time to the study of the curious item.

In that moment his attention took to the pendant which he still held in his hand. There was also something rather odd about the thing. A closer look betrayed none of the jewel's secrets but once Raeyn put it on he could feel the curious djed of the jewel. Or maybe he was just imagining it?

Every time he faced anything else in his little apartment, the jewel would be dull as ever but once the dagger was in direct sight, the pendant gleamed and shined like the sky fire of Syna. The first time it happened Raeyn was almost convinced he was imagining it. Later days revealed that the pendant shined when he faced any object of his desire. Curious indeed. It seemed magical objects - and chickens - were just falling into his lap this season.
