Raeyn's mother kept some truly interesting acquaintances. For a woman of exceptional beauty and an iron will she had a habit of poking her nose into the most interesting happening in the city of Lhavit and thus knew a great many people others would deem interesting. Night dwellers and day walkers alike. She mingled with bar staff, actors artists and mages. A forward thinker of liberal values was Astrid and herself sometimes even a person of interest.

Over the years the twins had grown used to hosting many such an interesting person within the humble four walls of their family home. All sorts has passed the front door. Some more or less mad with ideas a'plenty and a very many things to say but none would ever compare to a single man who had captured her young son's attention most of all. A man of two faces, a human by day, a creature of ethereal beauty come Leth's light. Going by the name of Orath, the ancient creature soon enough took an interest with the reserved young man as well. An interest in all things, a yearning for knowledge bonded them. A passion for the mystical and magical knowledge outside of the realms of the libraries of Mizahar. Both scholars at heart, it hadn't taken long for them to find a common language.

Orath was precisely the man Raeyn had sought out on this very cold, very gloomy evening and the one place he could find him was that which he had often entered in his dreams to discover the secrets hidden within. A fortress of skyglass arches, the Twilight Tower was precisely the place Orath had instructed to meet him. And once the hour came, eagerly did the youth hurry to it's gates. His heart in his throat. Anticipation coursing though his veins with every pump of the red muscle. Excited and nervous was he. Excited for a more private meeting with the mysterious Etherfal
and so very nervous about all the silly things that could go wrong.

A sixteen year old Raeyn was very different to the Raeyn of later years. Though cute indeed, his face still bore the roundness of childhood and eyes which seemed a little too big for the face that hosted them. Freckles a plenty, he was often tanned, so much time did he spend in the woods and the forests of the misty peaks with his father or along on the hunt with the pup Ruru. In spite of such frequent exercise his physique was twiggy at best. So skinny was the boy that come a great big gust of wind, one might fear that he might snap in half. But he was a lot stronger than he looked at least even if other boys has a habit of teasing him about how slight the androgynous youth looked. His hair reached little past the shoulders, always tied up or braided. And the poliosis had yet to take full form. Little white freckles mingles around his eye and forehead but nothing comparative to the great big patches of white that came in the later years. the most distinguishing feature of young Raeyn however, as it had always been, was the white streak of hair that cut though his fiery locks like lightning cut though the sunset sky.

Orath had been waiting for him at the entrance to the Twilight Tower , basking in his patron god's light like a lunar flower. Feeding from their delightful silvery glow. In the subtle light of street lamps his horns looked truly magical. The Eth greeted Raeyn with a quiet smile and a nod. "I'm glad you could make it. I trust your parents have been made aware of what it is you're going to get up to tonight."

"Of course." Raeyn lied though his teeth. He hadn't peaked a word, not to his parents, nor even his twin sister. Excusing the nighttime wonder as the need to help a friend with some errands, he avoided the ear beating he'd be given if he mentioned a word of magic to the family. It wasn't something strictly forbidden in his household. Not by far. In Lhavit, the city of skyglass, the star of Kalea, none feared the mystical thing near as much as anywhere else in Mizahar. But Raeyn's parents were the protective kind. They liked to have control over the children. And though Mara was the rebellious child who had become a handful for the two of them, Raeyn also had his rebellions. And busy with disciplining the firstborn, he had so much scope for getting away with murder, that A lesson in Alchemy surely wasn't the worst thing he could possibly get up to. Not by far.

The mage gestured for Raeyn to follow inside where the usual hustle and bustle was replaced by a handful of truly determined students and scholars who had forsaken any semblance of using the night time for leisure in order to pursue dreams of power and grandeur and research. Such was this city. Some did little all day and rested between the many breaks that made up the structure of Lhavit days. Others on the other hand barely slept at all. As they passed corridor after corridor of skyglass and ornaments, Raeyn looked around with wonder in his eyes. For a kid that bore a permanent resting bitch face, he sure was impressed.

"This is where you'll study once you manage to convince your parents to pay your tuition fees. But I'm sure with a little persuasion your father won't be that hard to convince. Your mother on the other hand... haha. All I can say is that I wish you luck." spoke Orather as they passed a long corridor with doors at regular intervals on both sides of the wall. "Ah and here we are. I've ensured this lab will be kitted out appropriately for our little beginner's crash course in alchemy. I trust that you've familiarised yourself with the material I've given you. Now it's time to show you how this art looks off paper."

If the idea of an afterlife was that of eternal happiness then the alchemy lab was Raeyn's personal afterlife. In fact he had to pinch himself to make sure he was still firmly bound to this mortal coil and his spirit had not floated off into a realm too beautiful to be true.

"Yes. Yes I've read those books cover to cover a dozen times." he said, following Orath into the promise land of his dreams.

Slate eyes of youthful naiveté looked around the room as if it was a castle of secrets. Tall ceilings and open spaces so large that he was sure his entire family homestead could fit in the one laboratory alone. At the centre a very small alchemy ring complete with vertical iron rings attached onto vices, bound by old djed wire, sat empty and clean. So small was it that it only made the lab look more vast. It was a tank and Raeyn was the tiny little fish dropped in it, slowly becoming acclimatised. Directly by one of the massive tower windows, a full vat of water stood, awaiting to be used. A whole plethora of simple materials lay beside it, ready for the mages to use them to their heart's content. The night was theirs to do with as they pleased. The moonlight peaked in onto their many mystical dealings as if Leth himself was curious.

In reality the lab was incredibly plain indeed. The circle was tiny and old and used and there was very little that a serious, learned alchemist could do anything terribly useful with. But Raeyn had never laid his eyes on such a thing before. To naive eyes of a child, who had looked upon the beginning of a life long romance only to be lovestruck where he stood, the laboratory was the most beautiful of love interests.

In time she'd grow stale. In time she'd become insufficient, fall below the Inarta's expectations. In time she'd swap her out for a better model with bigger assets, more capabilities. Years would see him nurture the art of making beauty and playing god. He'd develop self esteem a plenty and knowledge enough to romance better laboratories but none the less he'd always remember that very first romance.

Smiling, satisfied that the boy would never lie to him about such crucial things, Orath took two odd looking protective suits off hooks that hung by the door. One of them he'd toss to Raeyn, instructing the apprentice to put it on. The other he'd soon wear himself. Clothed protectively in the garments the two mages could start their nightly session with no fear of the magic, just respect for it. Danger and beauty; that was Alchemy. Orath could only hope that he had installed the knowledge of that in his head strong new apprentice.

"So I take it that you have come to understand the basic premise of the magic, yes?" he asked as he took the boy over to where materials a'plenty awaited their eager eyes.

"Yes." replies Raeyn immediately.

"Then you won't mind reciting it back to me I take it."

A sudden pressure took over the boy. What if he said something wrong? What if he forgot an important detail, or worse, failed to communicate it properly and thus lead the older mage to believe he wasn't yet worthy to be taught by him? But he couldn't allow himself to show the insecurities. Not now when he could smell the metallic scent of the alchemical circle. It came down on relying on his knowledge, trusting himself to be able to bare the consequences of his actions.

"It's a little like mathematics. The sum properties of materials used as faunts are transferred onto a new material via accelerated djed pathways. Filters can be used to purify the properties. The result is a non organic material with a half life that decays over time. Strength of the effect can be maintained by controlling the size of the circle... hmm... decaying materials release radiation that..."

"Enough enough." chuckled Orath. "I've asked you for the basic concept not to recite me a whole textbook."

The two of them stood before a myriad of different things. Herbs, metal ingots, stone, sand, powder and glass. There was food there too and things Raeyn could have never even considered. None of it was very expensive. Orath had ensured to cheep out on the new potential student because no matter what they made, at the youth's skill level it would be a waste either way.

"What takes your fancy, Raeyn?" he asked politely. Unbeknownst to the Inarta however this very question in itself was a test. Most would usually start with just one objects to test the powers and limitations of their own djed use. But the two had yet to test the circle for polarities.

"Hmm." replied Raeyn, thinking for a moment before his hands reached for a little empty glass vessel. "This should do." he said. "And maybe that piece of stone could go inside the transmutation ring?" as he spoke he pointed to a little bit of grey limestone that had found it's place among a number of different metal ingots.

Orath was about to facepalm, assuming that all he had taught to the youth this far had gone in one ear and out the other. But to his surprise Raeyn had turned to the vat of water and began filling the vessel to the brink. Once he came back he placed it on the flat vice head inside one of the iron rings at random. Then he proceeded to bite down on the flesh just next to the nail of his thumb and peeling back the skin until a large drop of blood emerged from the exposed fresh later of dermis. Squeezing his fingers till they turned which, Reayn let the drop of blood fall inside a ring on the opposite side of the circle so that they meridian keystones cut it in half, with water on one side and and blood on the other. Subsequently he returned for the stone and placed it inside the main ring of the circle accordingly.

"Ready." he announced, pleased with himself. This very simple transmutation was one he had read about in books before. Almost precisely from parchment pages was it lifted, in fact.By the moment the Raeyn was starting to feel more confident that he did indeed know what he was doing. That perhaps the books were enough and his choices were the correct ones. The latter perhaps true, but the first assumption he was soon to regret.

"Well well. Not very creative but I'm glad you read that particular tome. Very well. Let us begin. Place your palm on the keystone." replied Orath. Truly he had hoped for Reayn to be as curious of a daredevil as he had once been, coming to learn the arts of transmutation for the very first time. He was expecting for far more creative choices to be at hand, even if completely mad. Seeing the boy pull out a transmutation fight out of a textbook came at a surprise but well, not at all an unwelcome one. At least he could skip the long, boring, dreary explaining of this part for the first time in many many years.

This was a lesson he wasn't going to charge for. A free little crash course purely because he had grown a liking to the Inarta boy. In him he saw a reflection of his younger days, right after the fall. He saw Raeyn a material to be shaped and moulded like clay in his hands. Lead to be transmuted into gold. He hoped to catch the youth's interest enough so that he was willing to somehow make the money necessary to become a full time student. One day he'd come knocking on his door for the favour to be returned. One day; when Raeyn would be a man and not a boy.

"I want you to activate the ring. Do you know how to do that?" asked the Twilight professor.

"I know that blood is needed." replied Raeyn, placing his hand on the activating stone. The cool, icy smooth feel of the object felt comforting beneath his fingers.

"You'll need to tap into the djed of the circle, Envision it flowing though the wire. It will keep you focused. Physically push it though with your mind."

Young Raeyn did as he told him. But just as an added counter measure against tragedy, Orath came to assist, placing his hand next to the young magic aspirant who squeezed his bleeding thumb once more and marked the keystone with a smear of red. Suddenly a pulse of energy could be felt in the room. Like the lighting of fire in the hearth, Raeyn could feel the energy shifting. His eyes closed and he began to tap into the djed.

But he was on the outside of it. The blood was a bridge that connected the mage with the circle that he didn't quite know how to cross. His mind was too frazzled. Such he did but not yet from the inside.

"Focus, Raeyn." prompted Orath who sensed his friend's struggles.

The boy breathed , drawing air into his lungs, expanding his ribcage. The sudden rush of oxygen caused his heart to pump a little faster, a little harder as he closed his eyes. In the darkness there was no Orath watching over his shoulder like a hawk. It was only him and the circle to which he was so powerfully drawn. His hand on the smooth stone grounded him. In his mind the boy became part of the scenery until he felt his own muscles pule with the energy surrounding him. Inside the eye of his thoughts, nothing but darkness enveloped the room and the circle and the alchemist showed up as if painted with light.

All other thoughts were insignificant now. They passed him by as if flowing on the outside of his brain. lowly but surely the boy cleared his mind until he was focused on nothing more than the magic and the anxiety of failure. That was a thought a little harder to be rid of. A few more chimes passed but alas he made his peace with his own skill level, put his unbound faith in Orath and the anxiety too was gone.

And once there was no more thoughts, no more worries and no more distractions, there was only djed left. The djed of the metal wire, the rings, the object. The uncharted territory inside the ring that was so plain now; soon to become something magnificent or something truly painfully useless.

Raeyn focused on this djed so deeply that it felt a little like lifting a great weight with his very thought. Whatever Orath might have been saying, however much time it took, that was no longer apparent to the boy who put his all into what he was doing. He felt the magical energy begin to move. A current was established; slow at first and unsteady, it began to wind around and around the wire circle. It accelerated. The speed began to break off pieced of djed from the water and the vessel on one side, the blood on the other. The faster the energy became, the more of the object's very nature came with it until it all moulded into one current with sparks and threads of blue-white lightning flying around them.

This was something Raeyn wasn't quite prepared for. The sheer force of it all, the loud cacophony of sparkling djed around him. It felt dangerous. One wrong move, one break in focus and he could really damage something or worse. The suit protected him from the intensity of radiation but Raeyn's only true protection was Orath who'se powerful mind and years of experience helped him to stabilise the djed flow when Raeyn felt the anxiety take him. Two heads were better than one, after all.

The boy's heart pounded in his chest. The adrenaline of it all coerced though his veins much like the the djed coursed though the vein that was the wire. As it picked up yet more speed, so did his pulse.

Raeyn opened his eyes and watched his creation manifest. The lightning so bright that the candles that lit up the lab seemed so dim in comparison. Blue and gold reflected off his face and that of Orath who looked back at him, serious as stone. The Eth mage wasn't playing around. He never did with these things. Alchemy to him wasn't a toy to bolster his ego but a dangerous magic of creation that deserved according reverence. That was a lesson he hoped so dearly to install in the boy.

There would be many things Raeyn would need to learn. Another was to create to his skill level. There was nothing worse than an ambitious alchemist who had too much faith in his own abilities and an ego that lacked a humble counterpart. He had seen so many of them over the years. When messing with such primal energies, even the Twilight Tower couldn't protect fools from being destroyed by their own creations. That was something Orath dreaded to se happen to the youth. The boy's mother would have never forgiven him for it. Of course Orath had no idea that Astrid had been kept complete in the dark about the nefarious dealings of her sixteen year old boy. If he'd known he'd never have brought him here in the first place.

Raeyn was a determined young man. He had a habit of throwing himself into everything he did. Magic was no different. He gave it his all as he focused on maintaining the djed flow, unsure how much longer it would take. He tried to feel out the parts of it as they flowed past the keystone which he still held his hand on. The bridge of blood allowing him access but he was so very ned to it, that he couldn't quite tell how much of each material's essence was contained in the current. Eyes stared with horror and jubilation alike towards the centre of the ring. In that moment Raeyn could barely believe where his short young life had brought him but standing on the very bank of the river of knowledge, his heart was filled with euphoria.

"Be ready. It's almost time." said Orath, his voice muffled a little by the protective mask but Raeyn could just about make out the words in their entirety over the cacophony of thunder and sparks that they have created.

What would have he done without the other's watchful eye? It suddenly dawned on him just how out of his depth he was. Bold and brazen in his scholarly pursuits, Raeyn had never quite encountered the feeling of being a child in the deep end of the lake. Alas he had found a true challenge worthy of his efforts. Something as difficult to master as the art of creation. It called to him. The beginning of a life long romance.

Raeyn nodded. As he did so he felt the other mage begin to constrict the flow of djed though the circle, tighten it around the core like a hot wheel wearing out. "Three.... two... one..."

As the final number rang out Raeyn held his breath and listed his hand. Both mages released the energy flow in a thunderous roar. Smoke obstructed the boy's vision. At once Orath rose to his feet and hurried towards the centre, picking up a pair of huge, lead pliers on his way there. Raeyn struggled to see what happened next though the milky smog but eventually the noise of something fizzling out, as it plunged into the vat of water, came to his ears. Yet more smoke came up into the air.

"Raeyn, come. Come see." the Etherfal mage called out.

"Uh... yes. What... what happened?" Without wasting as much as a tick for great anticipation built up in his heart so fast that he could almost taste it, Raeyn hurried after his teacher in the direction of his voice. Soon enough the smog began to slowly dissipate, helped a little by the air vents positioned around the ceiling of the lab. From beyond white and grey curls of cloud like smoke, Raeyn's eyes narrowed in on something red. There, held in the Eth's gloved hand lay a large chunk of blood red limestone.

To say Raeyn was proud of himself was an understatement. Little in life compared to one's first successful transmutation even if the result was nothing even remotely useful. It wasn't it's uses that drew the young Inarta to the magic. It was the journey. The new way of looking at the world around him that it provided him. Since he began his research almost an entire year prior, fascination took him to learn a great many new things that changed the very core of who he was. Humbled him a little, matured him. Some say that one's first girlfriend would be one's greatest teacher. Well Raeyn's first true love was alchemy, indeed.

"Good going, kid. It's by far not perfect but considering it's your first time... I must admit I'm impressed."

Orath's words sent a jolt of happiness though Raeyn's body. There was little else he truly cared about than for the made to be proud of him. "Thank you. But I wan't to see how far I can push it. What else we can make. At least we know where the polarities of the circle are now however."

The Etherfal laughed, seeing the eagerness in his pupil. Indeed Raeyn did remind him a lot of himself in his younger years. Only more by the minutes, seeing the sparks of ambition in those slate blue eyes. "Hold your horses. Not so fast. perhaps a little break might be in order. Are you not tiered yet?"

In truth every muscle in his being ached. A little onset of a headache pulsed behind Raeyn's eyes from the sheer effort of the transmutation. Had he not been high on adrenaline, the boy would have likely dropped on his ass where he stood and taken an early morning break but he feared that if he so much as closed his eyes he'd be ripped out of his own personal paradise and forced to return to the reality of an every day boring life. For sixteen year old Raeyn adventure was a drug. The tiniest toke and he'd get hooked.

"Come. He'll get some water at least and decide on what to do next if you're so heart set on not quite leaving it here tonight. Perhaps something a little more complex this time." said Orath.

Obediently, like a dog, the youth trotted along after him. There few nights as beautiful as this one. The stars in the sky only added to it's beauty. A night he was not quick to forget.
