Lua wasn't looking forward to today. She had been dreading it for months. Today was the day her brother Karl was going to set off for the sea. For most of their lives he mused about life on the water, even though the entire family didn't like the idea. But he was stubborn, saving up for years now for sailing lessons and eventually a full boat. She was mostly pissed off because Karl was her wrestling buddy. They'd spent so much of their childhood play fighting, rough housing, and causing trouble together. Lua had broken his nose countless times, many of them for making Femi feel bad, and in return he had broken various bones. And he was just going to leave, despite all that bonding! The nerve!

She woke up early so she could do her usual morning chores. This included making breakfast and tending to her garden. She didn't grow any crops or anything, just some pretty flowers and shrubs. But her annoyance with Karl made her fairly aggressive to her plants, yanking out weeds so hard she sometimes even pulled out a growing flower. When she realized that, she grumbled and decided to finish it later, when she wasn't so annoyed.

She cleaned up, splashing water from the water basin on her face and scrubbing herself down with a sponge. When she was finished with that, the sun was peeking through the windows and filling her cottage with light. She got dressed after cleaning up, grabbed her bag and headed out to where the family was meeting up.

Karl was going to throw a goodbye party at his apartment at the Solar Wind. He had talked to Lana Winterflame, the housekeeper, about his departure and paid his final payment in advance. Lua didn't understand why he had to leave with just a couple weeks left of the season, but he simply would say he "simply couldn't wait any longer".

The walk from Sharai to Zintia was long, longer than usual it seemed because of Lua's annoyance for today. She had left shortly after dawn, and by the time she got to the third peak it was around Eight Bells. Her legs were sore and her mouth was dry, but she was almost there. She just had to find the Solar Wind.

At the front building of the apartments, Lua ran into Ms. Winterflame as the Vantha was cleaning up the front room. Lua opened the door want walked in, making a small bell go off, and Lana turned to look at her. She grinned and walked over to her. She had black hair and colorful eyes, and her smile was warm and welcoming. "Hello! Are you here for Mr. Petri's party?"

Lua nodded. "Yep, I'm Karl's sister." Lana told her which room was her brother's and how to get to it, and Lua left with a quick thanks. When she got to the door, she could hear talking on the other side. She immediately recognized her mother's voice as well as Kaya's voice. She reached up and knocked on the door. After a moment, the door opened to reveal Karl.

Since Lua moved out in 512, she hadn't really kept up with Karl's life. He had moved out a year later when their parents caved in and bought the apartment for him since he was too busy saving up for a boat and they wanted him to be more responsible. His curly hair had grown out in a controlled way, which showed even though he let his hair flow more freely than when he was child, he didn't let it grow wild. His face was freshly shaved and his brown eyes shone with childish excitment. "Lua! Come in, come in!"

Lua walked into the one-room apartment. It had been cleaned up so the only things left were what the apartments came with. On the table was a small feast, including a whole seasoned and baked chicken, meat pies and sweet pies. Karl grinned as she saw and he pointed out, "Got a sweet potato pie just for you, dairy-free and everything."

Sweet potato pie was her favorite flavor of pie, and to hear Karl had gotten one just for her was generous and surprising. She turned to him, smirking. "What, trying to finally be friends with me when you're leaving?" She wouldn't admit it, but she was grateful.

Karl grinned, sensing her hidden thankfulness and patting her on the head. "Everyone's here, so lets' start the feast!" He walked over to the table where there were plates and utensils, handing them all out. Lua held her plate with her fork on top, watching everyone else go for the turkey. She sighed, thinking about what this was. The last meal as a whole family, who who knew how long. They had been gathering for birthdays and other special ocassions, but after this....

She finally pulled herself from her thoughts and went to make her own plate.

Lua took some meat from the chicken with her fork, piling it on her plate, and took a couple slices from the sweet potato pie. There were also various vegetables that she grabbed as well, until her plate was filled with food.

She sat on the couch, in between Femi and Kaya. Femi was still just a child at twelve, and she wasn't all that upset about Karl leaving. He had been quite rough with her, often making her cry from roughing her up too hard. After Lua moved out and heard news of Karl moving out, she didn't have to worry about them butting heads. But Femi's tense feeling towards him was set.

Lua nudged Femi and smiled. "Hey, put a smile on. We don't have turkey often! And look at all the pies!" Femi shrugged, but a small smile did spread on her face. She took a bite of the turkey and replied, "Yeah, the food is a plus, at least."

The meal itself lasted only half a bell, but the family kept talking to each other for bells afterwards. Lua, Karl and their mother were the most active participants. Karin and Femi were the quietest, and Kaya was in-between. Ocassionally he was speak up to say something, but otherwise just listened.

At Fourteen Bells, Karl stood up and nodded to everyone. "This was a great goodbye. I'm glad we were all able to see each other as a whole one last time. But I think it's about time to head out. Who wants to come see the boat and wave me off?"

Lua couldn't help but be curious about what it would look like. Kaya declined, having a date with someone on Shinyama. Femi wasn't interested, Karin wanted to stay with Femi, and their mother didn't know if her feet could handle the walk. So it was just Karl, Lua and their father who went down to Tranquil Port to see Karl's boat.

Turns out, Karl wasn't going to be sailing on his own personal ship quite yet. He had bought the ship, but it was currently attatched to a large merchant ship to take him to the Suvan Sea. His ship was a Catamaran, small but comfortable. Karl was extremely proud of it, and joked about how he wished he could stay in the boat while they traveled. He explained his plan to them: be dropped of at Blackrock's port, and sail the Suvan sea on his own. He had thoughts of getting into the merchant business, maybe being a fisherman and make a living like that.

Lua listened, but couldn't help but feel a twinge of nausea in her stomach. She hated confronting the fact that her brother was leaving. The last time someone in their family had been outside Lhavit was her mother, who was born in Syliras and made her way to Lhavit in 482 AV. None of them have had the desire to leave Lhavit for any reason. She wondered why Karl wanted to.

As she was lost in thought, Karl approached her and wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug. She jumped, blinking and returning to the present, and he mumbled in her ear, "I'm going to miss you, Lua. Take care of your family, okay?"

Lua couldn't hold it back anymore. She started to cry. Tears streamed down her face and she reached up and returned the hug. "J-Just... don't get in trouble, okay? And visit often! I need a sparring partner still, and n-no one is as good as you!"

Karl laughed, his voice cracking. "Yeah. Of course I will!" He pulled back, holding Lua by her shoulders with a sly smirk. "And what do you mean, don't get in trouble? Do you know who I am?" His eyes were shining with tears, but he let out a loud cry and threw his fist in the air. "I'm Karl Petri, professional troublemaker!"

Lua wiped her tears off her face, smiling. "You know what I mean, idiot. B-Be safe."

Karl leaned forward and kissed her on the forehead. It was such an affectionate move and it startled her, making her chest seize up and another sob get stuck in her throat. A bell on the ship rang and Karl turned to look. "Ah, that's my cue. Time to go." He looked at their father and shook his hand. "I'll miss you, too, father. Keep mom safe, yeah?"

"With you not around, I'm sure it'll be easier." Their father laughed, but his face was covered in sadness.

Karl nodded, a small smile on his face, then he headed towards the ship. On the ramp up to the deck he turned back and gave the two of them one more wave before disappearing on the large boat.

Lua's father stepped beside her and put a hand on her shoulder. "Want to head back? Or do you want to watch the ship sail off?"

With a sigh, Lua started to head back towards the peaks. Her father followed.
