7th Day of Summer, 518 AV

The twilight hour was upon them and sun was ending its long parade across the dimming sky, as it was want to do at the end of the day. Syna’s resplendence was dipping lower and lower into the calm horizon of lake Ravok by the time Elias arrived, the shadows birthed from her lingering farewell growing longer and bolder with each passing step until the last vestiges of sunlight finally vanished and a veil of darkness drowned the sky and all below it. The stryfer watched in contemplative silence as the lamp lighters appeared not long after, moving from pole to pole, lantern to lantern, and making the streets shine with flickering, alchemical torchlight. Soon the darkness that had taken hold of Ravok’s streets was banished and the city was once again bathed in a brilliance of luminesces… or at least, most of it was.

The area outside the Bullyard tavern seemed a particular exemption from both light and scrutiny. There the soldier noted fewer torches and deeper shadows, and found himself wondering if such a design had been intentional.

Without a moment’s hesitation, he stepped inside.

Like before, a menagerie of sights and sounds and smells assaulted him all at once. It was a nauseating concoction of shouting, laughter and spilled drinks that all culminated into the usual brouhaha that one expected when setting foot inside a place as seedy and spectacular as this. All manner of races were seated and standing amidst the denizens of the intoxicated joint, from towering Myrians to squat Isurians, and even a handful of multi-armed Ephyarians were lounging near the back. Just as last time, all eyes flickered to him when he entered, but the vast majority turned away almost immediately. But a few more...

"What're you having?"

A slender, almost delicate woman was working the bar that night, her thin hands a blur as she mixed and served a half a dozen orders at once. Elias took a seat at the end of the counter that separated them, isolated and alone.

"I’ll have a-”

"Well slap my ass and call me the Voice, I don’t petching believe it!"

Customer and waitress alike turned as one to see a smirking Braga duck under the doorway -even though it was nearly seven feet tall- and saunter up to the bar alongside them. His eyes were flashing with a savage joy of recognition. Elias on the other hand kept his seat and wished he’d been faster on that order.

"You’re still alive, Nykan?"

"Business is good, soldier boy” The gladiator smirked “and Dira, that nasty cunt, has never wanted anything to do with me so far. I figure she knows well and good if she ever shows her face around the Animal, she’ll get herself a proper petching for her troubles." Braga cocked an eyebrow and his eyes shone with something other than memory, the dancing amusement of knowing. "I hear you’re not doing so bad yourself, pip squeak."

Elias's grin widened on its own and the waitress's eyes shriveled into something between exasperation and apathy at the sight of them both grinning like morons.

"Life is good, though not for lack of trying."

"I'm sure… Gotta admit, surprised you actually came back after what I did to you last time."

"I’m ready for round two."

"Ready to take your-"

"-lumps?" Elias said, remembering the big man's turn of phrase the first night they met. "I’m ready for you to try."

A laugh like a jovial thunderstorm echoed around the bar as Braga cracked knuckles the size of small apples. There was no warning for what came next, just a buzzing in the air like bees set to frenzy. It was a familiar feeling, a terrifying and exilerating feeling, the kind some men dreaded and others embraced like a lover. Something stirred and growled within the Ravokian as time seemed to slow around them. The air was thick with stale mead and all he could hear was the sound of Braga’s knuckles popping one by one. The power erupted from his guts just as the giant swung his meaty fist at the swordsman’s head, the force and fury behind the blow more than enough to knock him through the bar and damn near through the wall behind it, but it was not to be. That power that had begun to whir to life would not allow it. The flux burst into action, flooding his bones and muscles like a river bursting the damn. Elias’s hand lashed outward, and what should have ended into unconsciousness or worse was instead met by gasps from across the bar as all eyes turned to see what had just transpired.

Twitching, straining, both men stared at each other with beaming glares of defiance and mirth as Braga’s fist trembled within the vice Elias’s hand had created around it, stopping the surprise punch mere inches from his face.

The giant’s stirred shone with sickening elation.

"Oh, I’m gonna enjoy this."

Elias felt his pulse quicken as he descended the stairs behind Braga. Well, in his wake would be more accurate. The massive warrior cast a shadow big enough to swallow Elias entirely, and he knew that this giant was no lumbering ox, either. He was fast and sure and worst of all, he was experienced.

Braga stopped suddenly, and turned to face the smaller of the duo in the middle of the rough open space the basement provided.

"Ready to-"

Elias lashed out with his right foot and hammered the Nykan under the kneecap without so much as a warning. The huge man grunted and swayed on his feet, but his body was already moving in response, forearm sweeping vertically to knock away the short jab Elias aimed at his jaw, swatting it to the side, exposing his face… and in an instant, the entirety of Elias's vision became a huge, crashing forehead hurtling towards him.

He reeled backwards as the headbutt slammed into his skull and blackness filled his vision like swirling waters. But he remembered what Braga and Caiden before him had tried to teach; react. Don't slow, don't stop moving, and use anything that you can.

Elias fell against the back wall, cushioned by what felt like bags of grain. His right hand dropped into an open one as the gladiator’s blurry form surged forwards, his gargantuan right arm cocked back and ready to decimate its intended target. The mage had little time to spare as he swept his hand out the bag and tossed a cloud of grain into the big man's face.

"Petching-"

Braga growled and blinked just a second too late, flecks of grain biting into his eyes. Blinded, the punch meant to put Elias to sleep became a wild and unfettered thing, allowing the Stryfer to easily avoid it. As for the knee that followed however…

The Ravokian was doubled over as the unexpected attack caught him square in the gut and seemed to turn his lower spine to jelly. A chopping hand slammed onto his shoulder next, right next to his neck, expertly scrambling his senses as effectively as a club would. His whole right side went numb for a moment and the stone floor rushed up to greet him.

He lay there groaning, feeling rather than hearing footsteps retreating from him and then a deep, appreciative but slightly mocking laugh. He blinked and kept blinking until his vision was halfway normal and saw Braga leaning against the pillar nearby, his breath calm and relaxed as he absentmindedly picked grain out of his stubble.

"It was a nice try, punk." He said, sincerity in his voice. It was the conditional kind though, as if complimenting a student that still had a long way to go. "But I'm no stranger to fighting dirty. Petch, I wrote the damn book on that shyke.”

Then his voice became critical. "Your mistake was trying to go toe to toe. Goin' for my jaw? With our height difference?" He patted his crotch grotesquely and tut-tutted like a disapproving parent. "You know where you should have aimed for if you wanted to bring me down."

Elias nodded reluctantly, but was genuinely listening to every word. He was still learning the finer points of this kind of fighting, and prime among them was that "finesse and dignity" were overrated. A good, solid shot to the crotch would floor most men, and once down there, well, the fight was practically over. It certainly was when he and Braga last sparred.

He rubbed his bruised stomach and grimaced.

"As ever Braga, you are wise and sagely beyond your years." He backed up, well out of arms length, and put up his hands. "Once more?"

Braga's eyes searched the soldier's, but his body made no move to advance or strike. Just before confusion could set in, he shook his head. Now he was all serious it seemed, but his brows were knitted together like he was still thinking. Formulating, planning... plotting his lesson.

"I know you can take yer lumps, boy. Tonight, I'm gonna get a little more... specific.”

"Oh?"

Finally! He thought.

"Particuar moves. Technical stuff, not just reacting. Think you can handle that?"

With his forehead and stomach screeching at him to say ‘no’, Elias forced a cocky grin and nodded. The Nykan’s low laugh rumbled throughout the stone basement and threatened to throw the swordsman back on his ass again. The tavern was muted above them, the occasional roar outside now a mere murmur through the floorboards. Braga cracked his neck left, then right, and nodded sharply.

"Good. Now, pay attention."

And then he moved faster than anyone that size had any right to, right arm cocked close and jabbing out towards Elias's face.

The Caldera had just enough time to wonder how quickly a fractured skull would heal before the fist stopped in mid-air, a mere foot from his head.

Braga stood still as a statue, eyes piercing.

"What now?"

Elias blinked, taking a second or two to consider, and then bought his left forearm up and across, pointing upwards, like he'd seen Braga do to block his jab. He swayed to his right as he did so, so even if the punch wasn't deflected all the way, it would still miss his him entirely. Braga grunted, but his eyes were still critical.

"And then?"

Elias jabbed out with his right, aiming at Braga's nose-

"No."

The big man's left responded to his action, rising and wrapping around his wrist... lowering it to his throat.

"Guy my size, pop on the nose may or may not work. But you plant these-" he unwrapped Elias's fist so his fingers were together and extended, not all the way, just slightly bent "-and put them right here."

He moved them to a spot right at the center of the neck.

"But don't straighten them all the way. You do, they might bend backwards and you'll petch your fingers up."

The killer stepped back and kept talking, warming to his subject as Elias listened intently.

"Move forwards, too, when you strike." He demonstrated by jerking forwards a step with his right foot, striking out with his spear-like fingers at the same time. "Gives the punch a lot more force when you do that. Get lucky, you'll crush their throat, and that's that. They'll choke on blood."

Elias nodded and suppressed a grim smile. He liked that idea.

"But the most important thing is to move both arms as one. Block and blow, same time, don't give the bastard in front of you any time to think."

Braga stepped back and demonstrated, meaty arms moving in a blur as he did. Elias was impressed at his coordination, especially considering his size. He threw up his left forearm, stepped forward and his fingers were already lancing forwards before his forearm would have made contact with his invisible opponent's punch. Then he did it again, slower.

"Now you."

Braga's right arm lashed out again, and Elias's, feeling the urge to get this one right, summoned a friend to his aid. The power within him began to bubble and ferment upon command, like a rising tide brought to swell. The djed hidden at his core burst into life, surging forth from its resting place and into his arms as Elias called upon the Flux to aid his reaction. The mage’s left jerked up to block and deflect with blinding speed, aided by the not so natural assistance of his enhanced muscles. As arms shuddered with the impact of Braga’s blow colliding with his limbs, Elias surged forward, hand shooting out like an arrow, and his fingers sharpened into the serrated head… but slightly bent.

The strike stopped just short Braga's exposed throat.

The big man smiled, but his eyes were still cold.

"Again."

It wasn't just ‘again’, as it turned out. It was several dozen ‘agains’ until Braga was satisfied. For a man with no apparent knack for teaching, let alone decorum or dignity, Elias was both annoyed and further impressed. The son of a whore was relentless in his tutoring, correcting Elias's posture and form as necessary, as well as emphasizing over and over the need for dual movement.

"Again!"

After half an hour of repetition, Elias had pretty much got it down. Braga's arm shot out and his student’s left forearm jerked out yet again to block it. The meaty smack of flesh on flesh had barely hit the stale basement air before Elias stepped forward and thrust his extended fingers out, stopping them just short of the Nykan's throat.

Braga nodded shortly.

"Good. Then what?"

Elias lashed out with his right foot and stopped it an inch or two before Braga's crotch. The combination of the blow to the throat and the impact of that kick would have incapacitated nearly anyone, and they both knew it.

"Very good. Now, next lesson..."

He stepped back again and his massive hands patted both his knees, then his elbows.

"Joints. Best places for a hard blow if you can't get to something soft like the eyes. Knock 'em the wrong way, they'll break, and the other guy's got one less limb to work with, not to mention a petch load of pain screwing with his head."

He lashed out with his right foot and stopped it just below Elias's left kneecap in brutal demonstration.

"Right there. Smash it good and hard. Works if the bastard's wearing armor and his balls'r covered. Even wearing chainmail, at the least, you'll dislocate it. Get lucky, you'll break it." He demonstrated it again, then again. The placement of the kick would horrifically knock Elias's kneecap upwards, driving a wedge under his bone. "And what do you follow it with?"

Elias thought for only a moment, analyzing the situation. Minus a kneecap, his enemy would stagger, maybe even go down, attention focused on that leg... on that side...

He struck out with a short left jab to the side of Braga's neck. Not the throat under his chin, but the broader target that was the side of his neck. Braga nodded slowly, approval in his eyes.

"Good instinct. Hit that sweet spot and everything south of his neck'll go numb. But petch it up and he's still moving, so..."

He kicked out again, right foot going under Elias's kneecap, his left hand darting out like a snake's tongue for the side of Elias's head, and then he stepped forwards, right arm swinging hard for a new target. Not his fist though. That stayed twisted back towards his pectoral, and instead his elbow was swinging around, stopping just shy of the soldier’s jaw.

"Fists are good. Elbows are harder, so they're better. Problem is, you gotta get close."

The Nykan stepped back and repeated the three moves again; kick, punch, elbow. Anyone hit by all three would be unconscious or worse.

He stopped, raised an eyebrow, and Stryfer already knew what he was going to say next.

"Now you."

Again and again and again they went at it. Until practice made perfect, or at least an improvement.

Elias kicked and jabbed and threw his elbow dozens of times in half a bell, until the movements became instinctive. Which Braga had said was the point.

"You’re in the army, right?" He said, after showing Elias how to step into the elbow strike properly. "All that training, sparring, thrusts and swings and all that. It's all just, y'know... muscle memory. Instinct. Best kind there is. Because when it kicks off in a brawl, you ain't gonna have much time to think. You react, and those moves will do the work. But remember what I told you last time; if-"

"If you have to fight," Elias finished, power swelling within as he urged forward the flux once more. Fat and furious with the pure power engorging their strength, his muscles fired him forward like a piston, his body lunging with increased intensity as his right foot lashed out and his elbow did much the same in that exact instant, "Hit first, and hit hard."

"Well petch me, he’s learning. Again!"

More chimes passed, until Elias could kick and jab and throw his elbow in one smooth, brutally effective movement. Braga started to nod his approval, then started to block. The first time Elias paused, and was rewarded with a ‘friendly" jab to his jaw.

"What're you waiting for?!" Braga had roared, voice scornful as Elias rubbed his face. "What, you miss one so the rest don't follow? You keep moving, soldier! They block the leg, you go for the jab. They block the jab, you go for the elbow. They block that, you try something else, but you do. not. freeze!"

He swung again and Elias stymied the blow with his forearm before he'd thought about it, fingers thrusting out, harsh and practiced. Braga caught his wrist in a blink of an eye, but Elias brought his foot up between his legs before his hand had stopped moving all the way.

The Nykan grunted, and Elias had to marvel at the man's pain threshold. A kick in the balls and his legs barely shook. He just stood there, nodding.

"B-better.” The giant coughed uncomfortably. He stepped forwards after a moment and peered into the soldier's face.

"Ready?"

"Ye-"

The punch came hard and out of nowhere, but Elias's forearm was already up to meet it, knocking it away, fingers flying fast for the Nykan's throat the moment they had a chance. Braga simply swayed away with practiced ease, boot lashing out as he moved. Elias swung his body to his left, the kick hitting nothing but air, his own right foot jerking sideways and slamming under Braga's kneecap with a satisfying thud of bone and meat.

The Nykan grunted and staggered, his student lunging forwards for a jab at his neck, but Braga mirrored his actions mere moments before, blocking with his right arm, but it was too late. The student mercilessly swung his elbow fast and hard into place across the gladiator’s jaw.

A harsh, dry bark of laughter, and the Nykan was grinning. Elias's eyes went wide. God above, did he even hurt him?! That elbow would have shattered a bone, or at least dislocated it. But Braga just shrugged it off, nodding and chuckling as he reached out one meaty hand to pat Elias on the shoulder.

"Not bad, you littke shyke. Makin' progress..."

His other hand reached out to, but palm up. Elias, recognizing the gesture just shrugged and dropped ten gold mizas into it. Braga grinned even wider, folded his fingers over the coin, placed his hands together, and then exploded them outwards in a showy display that seemed quite unlike the man.

The mage realized with some degree of annoyance that the money was suddenly gone.

"Ah, you know I’ve got no need for it anymore after all the fights I’ve won and sponsors I’ve gained, yet I just can’t help myself. There’s nothing quite like taking another man’s money. I’ve plenty of my own, yet I’ll always want more of it as long as its someone else’s and they don’t wanna let it go… know what I mean?"

The stryfer merely retorted with ab uncertain gaze, as if questioning the gladiator’s sanity, but the truth of the matter was Elias knew exactly what the big bastard was on about. The strong took what they willed, and there was little else in this world as satisfying as knowing the enemy -the weak- could do nothing to stop you. It would have been an understatement to say Elias had his fair share of enemies in this world -hell this city- but now thanks to Braga, the soldier’s strength had grown, which in turn meant so to did the helplessness of those who would oppose him.

There was more to learn, there always was, and Braga, despite his many, many flaws, still seemed like a fellow the Caldera wouldn’t mind having in his corner, if only to make certain he wasn’t in the oppositions. Elias would endeavor to earn the man’s trust further, or at the very least his tolerance.

Braga returned his scrutinizing look with one of his own before promptly dismissing his student with a flippant ‘bah’ and a shooing motion that ended abruptly in a thunderous belch as the giant moved off to find himself something new to either imbibe, destroy, or petch.

… A task easier said than done.
