50th Spring 510
Shooting Star Inn

In life, once every few years, one may come across one of those people that, no matter what, cannot be shaken off. Once they bite, they do not let go. And Raeyn had been pretty competent at shaking anyone off, even those types. At least that was the case until he met Liard.

Much has happened since that fateful night they met in the woods. A friendship was forged in the rocks, soil and leather. And in spite of relentless teasing, fighting and general meanness, the two boys became inseparable. They did almost everything together. Many a hunt came and passed but perhaps the best of times were the bants over a flagon of ale and high spirits.

This was particularly such an evening. Having found himself engrossed in the ambience of the Shooting Star Inn, Liard tossed his feet up onto the table and chugged down a tankard after tankard of ale. Relaxed, indeed he was, leaning back a bit on the hind two legs oh his chair, hands crossed behind his head. A usual smirk on his face which, devilishly handsome as it was, graced a few new cuts from his most recent adventure. Across the table, propped up on his elbows, one leg crossed over the other sat Raeyn. With his cheeks as red as his hair, from the effect of the alcohol, his eyes looked to no one else but his companion. He looked like something was bothering him, though he gave the fact little lip service. Within that ember heart there was no contentment, as always.

It was a double edged sword, that Raeyn walked on. For however much time he had spent with the mixed blood, he only craved more. What started as a friendship rooted in a common interest had quickly turned into the secret of a shameful crush he could tell nobody about, certainly not his friend, for fear of loosing what he'd worked hard to build. Still, how could he help himself?

It was a pity when times he should be looking forward to were laced with the anxiety of doing something stupid, saying something that could easily be misconstrued. When just looking at the other was both the joy of beholding a beautiful sight and the torture of knowing it would never truly be his. For Liard was the type who knew exactly who and what he was. A handsome bachelor who, unabashed, hid none of it. He carried himself with the boldness of a man who could have any woman he wanted, and often made it clear he was willing to help prudish little Raeyn in the department of finding himself a little romance in his life. In fact he pushed that notion onto him. Made fun when Raeyn politely refused his good advice. How could Liard know that the very object of the Inarta's desires sat right across from him.

Truly Raeyn could do the only thing he really knew how to do when stuck between the rock and a hard place. He put up walls. For the past few days he'd grown colder, more dismissive. Though at first not exceedingly so, he soon found himself not listening when Liard spoke of the many things that tickled the fancy of his free spirit. He'd come to replace words with nods and smiles with dropping his eyes to the floor. It was only when intoxicated that the Inarta would glimmer with that fire Liard saw in him the first time they met. And soon enough Liard took to getting him intoxicated much and often.

Suffice to say, even though he didn't show it, Lard had all but missed this progressive change in his friend's moods. A boy who once followed him around like an obedient puppy now acting like a grumpy teenager whilst giving little due reason for it. It worried him. His mind could only search for answers as to this puzzling turn of circumstance but the more he gently pried and prodded for Raeyn to let him in, the more he'd found himself shut out all together.

And thus Liard came up with a plan. Perhaps if he could just get Raeyn drunk enough, he'd come to learn of what troubled the youth.

Flames of candles flickered around them, warming up the crystal white hues of the interior as the boys engaged in a mostly one sided conversation about a little bit of this, a little bit of that. On their table, empty tankards began to build up.

Mara had been on her shift that evening, having only recently started waitressing at the Shooting Star and coming to take to the job like a moth to flame. She too saw the grump that had taken over her brother but years of living beneath the same roof taught her one thing; not to ask questions unless he came to her with answers. It would only ever end one way. Thus, with a room full of happy patrons she came to bring another overflowing flagon to the boys' table, taking her seat beside Liard. A little break for aching feet.

"Well, well. Aren't you a sight for sore eyes." winked Liard at the sight of her, before adding with a chuckle. "Not you, Mara, the beer."

Playfully she gave him a hard shove. "Are we celebrating something? Or are you planning to send my brother to the Catholicon tonight?"

"Bit of both, perhaps." The hunter took his feet off the table and sticky fingers lead him to the flagon of ale, pouring himself half a tankard, and a full one for the flushed redhead. "Will you be joining us?"

"Afraid not. Busy, busy, busy. You know how it is. But I do have a few moments free for a smoke break, if you have and backy on you."

Liard rolled his eyes, teasingly, pretending as if her request was such a massive trouble before letting out a hearty chuckle. "That's all you have me around for, eh? Not my superior sense of humour of good looks. I'm just the one bring the bad habits."

Raeyn rose to his feet first, clutching his ale in one hand. "Pity that's all you're really good for."

"You hurt me, kiddo." snorted Liard, paying the comment no attention. They relentlessly made fun out of each other. It simply became part of their dynamic. He knew it, Raeyn knew it, even Mara had grown used to it. Sneaking out the door, the three of them made their way onto the terrace where in the distance they could see the very last rays of sunlight disappear beyond the horizon.

A darling of the group, in any group she found herself in, Mara seemed to always have first dibs. And as Liard passed her the packed, lit pipe, she let herself float away on the feeling of indulgence that swirled though her lungs, bringing much needed calm. Her eyes lingered on the little cuts that graced the man's left cheek. "What happened this time? Some mighty great beast I presume?"

" 'Twas a bear. As big as a whale." he lied.

"My goodness, and you fought it off all by yourself?"

"With my bare hands. I'd have hung the sucker's head above my fireplace if not for the fact it's too big to get though the door."

"That must have been some adventure." she giggles, taking none of what he said seriously as usual, handing him the pipe.

"Certainly was." he said, glancing over to Raeyn but failing to catch the boy's gaze. "Say, Maz. Have you got any spare rooms over here tonight? Dad's not been in the best mood as of late."

Mara's brows pulled together in an expression of worry. "Of course. By all means."

Thanking her graciously, the hunter stuck his pipe between his teeth and rummaged his pockets briefly before handing the payment in Kina for a night's stay to the girl. But when she came to ask if all was as it should be at home, he dodged all questions with the grace of an elephant in a china store, but the stubbornness of a donkey in a field of carrots. It wasn't the first time he refused to talk of his home life and it wouldn't be the last. For the reality was a shameful one, to him. Nothing more than blood ties kept him loyal to the man he secretly wished death upon though could never bring himself to do the deed.

Beneath the exterior of a confident lad, the mixed blood was a buggy trapped in a cage without a key. He talked a big game but when it came to action he came up empty handed. Perhaps somewhere inside he knew that there was space for him with the twins, in the safety of a stuck up but safe family. But he had his bountiful ego to nurture. And above all, refused to be a burden. Liard looked ahead to the day he'd save up enough Kina for a place of his own. Until then his lips were sealed for fear of fear itself.

As his friends conversed, Raeyn leant over the banister of the terrace to and looked to the city below. Against the navy of the sky, his red hair swayed backwards and forwards in the breeze as the alcohol ridden haze enveloped his vision. The conversation went on beside him but within the strict confines of his personal bubble, Raeyn heard little of it. He'd been too busy in the world of his thoughts to listen and so, by the time Mara said her farewells and left them with a kiss on the cheek each, she startled the soul out of the Inarta boy.

"You sister has a great ass."

The words felt like a stinging slap to the back of Raeyn's head. His neck snapped to glare at his companion in a sudden surge of anger that rose up like lava from his heart. The usual soft tone to his voice turned to daggers. "Don't dream of it."

"Why not? I could be your brother in law." replies Liard in jest. He had a habit of poking where it hurt just to see Raeyn's reaction. there was a certain satisfaction he had from watching the boy squirm. He tossed the pipe to the Inarta, hoping that at least would calm him down a little as he leant back against the banister, with his elbows hanging over the edge and one foot against the other. Eyes now completely taken with Raeyn.

"She's seeing someone." the boy snapped, tossing his eyes aside, anywhere but to look at Liard. He'd grown used to being the recipient of many unfunny jokes but as far as Raeyn was concerned he wasn't any less entitled to getting pissed off with that which he'd come to expect. "Besides I don't think you're her type."

"What is her type?"

Raeyn sighed and closed his eyes. His hands trembled holding the pipe from anger as he drew the smoke into his lungs so hard it stung his throat, almost making him cough. But like the stubborn mule that he was he refused to cough. An awkward silence fell around the boys. It seemed Liard was slowly running out of insults for the evening.

Times like there Raeyn wondered why he still lingered around, only for the other to infuriate him with such chatter. They made a great team out in the wild. And within the tight confines of the city they were good friends as long as certain topics were kept off the table. But confronting these issues made him want to not bother with all of it. Life was simpler alone.

But alone they were not. And whilst Raeyn kept his eyes on the stars which one by one blinked into existence on the night sky, LIard's attention drifted to a different kind of pleasure. For, gathered close to the door was a gaggle of girl, about their age, all dressed in the pleasures of Lhavitian finery and fashion. With rosy cheeks and painted faces, they chatted and giggled, looking to the boys from time to time before shielding their lips behind palms once they realised they caught one of the boys' attention. And when he tossed them a charismatic smile, they replies with charming ones of their own before breaking into yet more chatter.

"Looks like we have company." he said turning back to Raeyn.

"And what of it." he murmured dismissively, more interested in the pipe than the women with which he shared the midnight air.

"Perhaps we should go over and say hello."

"Go ahead. I'll be inside when you're done." replied Raeyn, passing the pipe to it's rightful owner. He ran his hand across the front of his robe, tossing off any bits of burnt tobacco that may have fallen onto it before readying to depart.

"Don't be such a killjoy." Liard's arm would loop under Raeyn's elbow, halting the boy in his step. His head tilted. "Come on. You know one of them hasn't stopped looking at you since we came out here. Just talk to her."

It seemed to him, that the hunter could never truly come to understand how little interest Raeyn had in all this. How instead of spending the night talking to women he'd just rather the mountain split open beneath his feet and swallow him whole. "Will you just leave me the petch alone?" the boy snapped, flames of irritation burning heard and healthy in his eyes as them finally came to meet those ale pools of LIard's.

"What's wrong with you?" This time it was the hunter who snapped, quickly growing sick of Raeyn's attitude. "Are you gay or something?"

Raeyn didn't reply. He simply looked at him with daggers for eyes that took Liard aback a little before everything clicked into place for him. And in that moment he could almost laugh at himself for how long it had taken him to realise. He blinked slowly, and once his eyes opened once more they were soft. A smirk returning into his expression as he took a step towards Raeyn, placed a hand on the boy's waist, the other beneath his chin. "You should have said something." he whispered and pulled Raeyn close, joining their lips in a kiss.

'You should have said something'

Raeyn's heart froze in his chest. His breath ceased in his lungs. The flames in his cheeks burned painfully as that which he had pined after for so long now was too close for comfort. And paralysed, as he was, there was no forgetting what was about to unfold.

It was almost as if time stopped around the two hunters. The world outside became a blur of lights and sounds as lips pressed against Raeyn's own softly, sweetly. The taste, an intoxicant in itself, going right to his head, rendering the boy drunk with lust. Denied the ability to think for a moment, Raeyn felt his own lips trace the shape of the other's, reciprocating the kiss with delightful intensity. He was drawn in closer, deeper, finding himself pressed against the banister. His senses overwhelmed by the object of his desire. His scent, the feel of him as his arms wound tightly around Raeyn, one at his waist, the other tracing the spine of his neck with his thumb. Liard leaned against him, kissing him all the more passionately with each passing tick, sneaking his thigh between Raeyn's knees. He was so close that Raeyn could feel his friend's heavy heart beat against his own.

His personal bubble popped, leaving the Inarta to scramble for whatever was left of it.

As if by a will of their own, Raeyn could feel his own hands press against Liard's chest. A part of him wishing not to ever break this kiss, the other, a far stronger part, desiring for it all to stop so that he could sink away into the night and never have to face the consequence of what this all meant. A friendship of a season that was dissolved in one kiss alone. He knew very well that there was no going back and that realisation flared a painful spike of anxiety in Raeyn. It ripped him out of the bliss of it all and plunged him back into the icy waters of reality where, still held by the strong arms of his companion who quickly started to grow worried, Raeyn hung his head, read as a tomato. Fragile, as he was, the Inarta trembled like a leaf on the wind.

"What's the matter?" asked Liard, concern dotting the i's and crossing the t's of every word. The kind of concern that never before graced his face. Hot breath caressed Raeyn's cheek who grew defensive and disconnected by the moment. And sensing it all, Liard took a step back, to give the Inarta a little space but he placed his hands over Raeyn's at his chest, hoping at least that little bit of connection may bring him a little comfort. A little assurance that beneath a solid exterior the hunter feared the next words out of his companion's mouth would bring rejection his heart wasn't ready for. "Talk to me."

Unforgiving tension enveloped the few ticks of silence that passed between them. Liard found himself paying closer attention than ever to the tiniest subtleties in Raeyn's embarassed expression, doing his best to keep a cool head whilst his heart felt like it was about to rip from the veins in his chest, so heavy did it beat. So was it that loud he could hear it in his ears. There were drops of sweat at the back of his neck as uncertainty coursed though his veins. Hoped for the best, did he, but feared the worst. And if his affection was to be rejected, oh how he wished Raeyn would just go ahead and do it already.

"We shouldn't be-"

"Why not?" Liard's lips spoke before he willed them to. The sound of his own voice broke in his ears as he swallowed hard, struggling to maintain his composure. The hunter breathed in, trying his hardest to come across as steady as it was physically possible though frayed nerves. A rock between crashing waves. "Raeyn I'm sorry. I didn't... I didn't mean to... If you don't fee the same way. I get it. Please can we just forget it ever happened."

It all felt a bit of a blur to Raeyn who'se mind was sluggish under the influence of ale. Whatever he could have said in that moment seemed insignificant. Any fleeting acknowledgement of affection wouldn't be good enough. There were no words for such things. A step closer was all it took before the drunk boy found himself brushing his lips against Liard's once more flaring both surprise and satiating worry in one fell swoop.

If not for the sweetness of the kiss, Liard could have honestly hit him. And how he had to keep an eye on the whereabouts of his fists just to make sure he didn't do so. Once their lips parted the hunter was oh so clearly irked that the very flesh of his face rippled with frustration. "What the hell is wrong with you?" he cried, grasping Raeyn by the wrist to make sure the drunk boy didn't get any stupid ideas about pulling away from him again. "Was it really necessary to scare the shyke out of me like that? For a moment there I thought I did something really petching wrong."

But the anger bounced off Raeyn like rain bounced off of windows. His mind fixated of that one tiny detail Liard had let slip by complete accident. The very words etched themselves into his memory. "You have feelings for me?"

There was a teeny tiny little vain in Liard's forehead happily pulsing away. If Raeyn hadn't been too busy being lost in the man's eyes, he might have even noticed it. "Yes, dickhead. What gave it away? The fact I've been spending every waking moment with your damned ass since we met, maybe?" he had to physically stop himself from yelling at the boy who stood there with the dumbest grin on his face. But the sudden spike of anger didn't last long. For that grin was infectious. And soon enough Liard found himself fighting off a smile of his own that snuck into his expression.

"But the comments you made..."

"I was trying to piss you off. Rae, you were neither here nor there all night." A rare occurrence as it was indeed, Liard's tone shifted to one a little more apologetic. "I'm sorry. I was being a dickhead coss honestly, I've been wanting to tell you this for a while. But well.. I was scared."

There was no feeling to rival this. The feeling of being on the same page about something as this.
