Appearance

Image
--

Azcan stands at a slightly above average height of 5'10". He possesses lively light brown eyes and thick black hair, the fringe of which if left down often reaches his eyes. There is a strange quality about the Illusionist, a pull brought about by his easy smile and inviting disposition. Often, the musician's shirt will be open or off entirely, revealing on his back a large tattoo on his lower back, his preferred nickname of 'Boy Wonder' etched into his skin in large, stylistic letters.

Azcan's physique, often in full display, is lean and trim, contours of the musculature present sculpting an appealing (to some) quality to him. Azcan is a creature of delight and does not show an ounce of darkness or weakness in his posture. He stands straight and sits back, his features exhibiting an openness about them that pulls people towards him, his roguish smile capturing the nature of the showman and, perhaps, coaxing others to join him. A performer by trade, the young man often carries with him his set of bongo drums, supporting them with a thick strap around his neck. On the palm of his left hand, Azcan bears Ionu's gnosis mark, an upside-down triangle that changes size and colors at its own whim in gradient patterns stemming from the interior out.

Gnosis

Illusionism*** (L1)

Those so marked with one of Ionu's gnosis marks can create minor illusions involving a single sense (touch, taste, smell, sight, sound). The illusionist can easily change multiple aspects of themselves and their bodies. Hair color, eye color, the tone of their skin, the accent of their voice is all very reasonable for them. However, they cannot stack illusions, meaning if their chosen illusions involves sight, all their subsequent illusions at that particular time must include sight. They cannot, however, alter sight and sound at the same time. But they can, however, affect multiple sights and sounds with enough focus to maintain multiple illusions. Minor illusions last for only a single hour, and they can have up to ten illusions ongoing at a time. If they wish, they can trade multiple illusions for longer time periods. That means they can have up to one illusion for ten hours or ten illusions for one hour or any combination therein. Again, multiple illusions can only effect one type of perception at a time. If they have ten illusions ongoing, all ten illusions must affect the same sense, e.g. sight. Minor illusions can easily change numbers on playing cards, dice or the appearance of a street or shop sign. Minor illusions can affect multiple people at a time.

Image

Azcan's gnosis mark takes the form of an ornate upside-down triangle, superimposed on the flesh of his palm. The gnosis is not entirely static, waxing and waning in size, particularly when the power of Illusionism is in use. The mark is prone to changing color randomly, with nothing but chance affecting what color might bleed into it at any given moment. The mark changes in gradient effects that grow from the center and extend outward.

Disposition/Outlook

Image

--

A creature of habit, Azcan doesn't exhibit extreme signs of his fascination with hallucinogens, but nonetheless it's a massive part of his life. He prefers to keep his life free of cares and obligations, providing him with plenty of time to indulge in delights without concerning himself about what his indulgence might result in. While he's very present to the dangers of Sunberthian life, he tries to keep himself at an arm's distance of trouble, to varying degrees of success. He delights in the company of others (perhaps too much so) and always strives to make himself the center of attention. Thus, he often finds himself in plenty of situations that require him to think on his feet: a dangerous thing for a young man with penchants such as his.

For Azcan, the first and foremost priority in his life is pleasure. Pleasure for him can come in a great many shapes and forms, be it from indulgences in narcotics and the flesh to the simple tastes and sounds of the world, though he vastly prefers the former. This priority primarily in pleasure leads Azcan away from attempting to establish new, meaningful relationships. He values the safety in acquaintance and the pleasure of new, different company time after time often haves him drift apart from those that might come to care for him. Azcan possesses an over the top disposition, headstrong once he lands on an idea and often argumentative without getting violent. He loves ambiance and often will create it on his own if there's none or a negative one in his presence.

Azcan reveals to the world what he chooses for them to see. Though countless insecurities linger within his mind, worries of home, fear of the city of Sunberth and the violence it represents he does not represent them. Instead, he projects a visage of exuberant joy, casting forth an eager temperament that bows to very little with the exception of boredom. He often tries to make the best out of any social situation, avoiding conflict and treating those that cause it with a great measure of disdain.

The junkie's words are often woven deceits, lies to make others feel better or to otherwise cloak them from the unpleasant truth that is Azcan. Paired with his dirty habits of preying on those who seem frustrated or sad, Azcan offers himself as a means of cheering up those with problems that plague their mind to the point that it's represented on their face. Bubbly and kind at first glance, such kindness hides the manipulative nature that dwells within. Azcan thrives on attention and affections thrown forth at him, be it a round of applause after a performance to screams of pleasure reverberating off the walls of a home that isn't his own, and quickly finds his mood souring when such affections aren't present to distract him.

Personality

Image

--

Azcan, like most people, is a melting pot of emotions and habits that click together to create a cohesive organism. He is pre-disposed towards prioritizing pleasure above all else, greedily seeking after whatever he can find to amuse himself regardless of the consequences that might arise from such indulgence. That isn't to say that he's blind to reason, and if the 'juice' isn't worth the 'squeeze' he's often the first person to bow out and turn the other way when something gets too intense for his liking. The young man's sense of caution extends only as far as he can see and his actions might cause long-term detriment to him even if he doesn't see it immediately. Azcan is intelligent, but his mindless abuse of drugs often keeps him muted to the values of reason and logic, instead moving forward with whatever satisfies his gullet, lust or appeals to his sensibilities.

The junkie is judgmental by nature, looking at people's faces and their general form of carrying themselves, forming his opinions that are somewhat difficult to change even after getting to know them. He possesses a steep fear of solitude, which causes him to immerse himself in the company of others even if he dislikes what they do or say. Often enough, he's found to be easy company, always happy to say yes to requests that he finds justifiable, whether that means playing the drums for groups of people or fucking a lonely housewife whose mercenary husband is out for a couple of days. If he meets the eye of someone he likes, he makes it known very quickly and in ways that are difficult to ignore.

Azcan is persistent, but rarely lingers, rarely finding anyone so addicting or lovely to be around that he'll stay with them for more than a few hours. His friends are often souls who share his mindset or people who can tolerate him despite his flighty and utterly selfish nature. The junkie's mind is laden with contradictions, from craving company to leaving whoever accepts that company almost at the turn of a phrase. He relishes attention but is somewhat unwilling to reciprocate it, affections often lost on the drummer and resulting in heartbreak or disappointment. Though Azcan tries to keep relationships at a distance, he's amicable, talkative and easygoing, easily commanding the attention of a room whether with his drums or his outlandish, wild actions. A servant to his whims, Azcan is a flexible soul, following what catches his eye.

His personality does not mellow when intoxicated, but rather, it seems to highlight the most extreme parts of himself, with respect to his situation. If Azcan is feeling flirtatious, that nature will grow to a problematic extent. Likewise, if he's feeling generous, he'll give too much and leave himself with nothing. When playing the drums, Azcan seems to change. His demeanor becomes fluid, his senses awash in the sea of the music that dwells within the soul. Soft beats of his palms or drumsticks on the fabric surface of any drum take him to another world, the sensation comparable (and often mixing nicely with others) to its own high as he loses his sense of self. Though often easygoing and morally ambiguous by nature, there is one soft spot within Azcan that does not budge to anything. He has a deep appreciation for children and will not sully their growth and forming habits by exposing them to drugs. Often, he'll forgo payment for any kind of performance if the audience is primarily children.

Character History

--

Childhood (Zeltiva, Sylira)

Azcan was born to a husband and wife of modest means, raised primarily by his mother while his father worked. He was given a great deal of freedom growing up. When his penchant for music was brought to light, his parents purchased for him a set of bongo drums, which to this day he keeps as a reminder of home. His childhood was relatively unremarkable up until the age of sixteen, where his indulgence in intoxicants truly began. The Svefra local to the Zeltivan port are as varied as the winds they sail on, and some of them took a liking to the beautiful boy they saw walking through the port. Such a Svefra pod attracted Azcan's attention, their strange accents and nubile daughters attracting the attention of the young Zeltivan. He'd spent an entire summer with the Svefra (with the blessing of his family), going to sea with them and acting as their drummer. His experience was a fantastic one, pleasures of the senses and flesh alike indulged in endlessly aboard a sloop The Wayward Tabernacle.
To be Expanded...

Present day (Sunberth)

Unfortunately, the journey with the Svefra wouldn't turn out quite as they all planned. A full turn of the season came and went, with hardly a care in the world passing through Azcan's mind. The passage of time seemed irrelevant in the arms and beds of his Svefra shipmates, with Azcan happy to play the drums and keep on with the beat that life set about for him. More and more he indulged in the drugs they offered him, never learning the names of the substances he snuffed and smoked but reveling in the effects nonetheless. It wasn't until the Wayward Tabernacle moored in Sunberth that a longing for a life off of the sloop began to appeal to him. Quickly, Azcan found himself in an entirely new life within the city. When the Svefra left port, Azcan was notably absent from their next gathering. Rather, the young and unburdened 'Boy Wonder' was left alone in a city he scarcely knew, eager to explore and understand a city that held so much danger, and yet... so much intrigue. Azcan felt a fascination with Sunberth that he might come to regret as time went on. It was Autumn of 517 and Azcan, while he missed his family, had no idea how to get back. Whether or not his stay in Sunberth is prudent is left up in the air, but he knew that drugs were a lot harder to get in Zeltiva...

During his travels with the Crestwidow Pod and aboard the Wayward Tabernacle, Azcan was visited by the God of Illusions, Ionu. A conversation with a God was something he never expected to indulge in. In that conversation, he spoke openly with Ionu, and was granted the gift of Illusionism. (Story detailed below.)

Bring Me to Life :
18th Winter, 516 (Outer Oceans near Syliras)

"Heave away, me jollies, heave away~!"

The chorus swept through, intermingled with vibrant laughter as the atmosphere about The Wayward Tabernacle began to shift. Night crawled over the oceans of Mizahar, the waves of Laviku's domain splashing against the hull of the grand sloop as the sorrows of a recent loss spilled away. The sharks feasted on the corpse of a fallen Svefra brother this night, and while Azcan felt no sense of loss from his passing he certainly felt it in the faces of the Svefra throughout the proceedings beforehand. Once night fell and Leth presided over the skies of Mizahar there was a change in the air. Lanterns were positioned carefully along the walls of the hull and in a circle about the mast.

The beating drums resonated with the hearts of the Svefra, whose collective breath rose and fell with the movements of Azcan's fingertips on the fabric cover of the bongo drum he possessed. Pleasure coiled about his senses as he leaned his back into the warm flesh of a mourning daughter, his head rolled back so that with a beat of the drum lips pressed to the soft skin of her neck. Mourning was to be had, certainly, but the moment came and went. The night didn't belong to the dead. It belonged to the living and the music that erupted from the hearts of the Svefra and their human companion. Azcan didn't sing, instead letting his attentions drift along the flesh of his mourning friend as the heels of his hands beat against his drums, leading the sloop's crew through another chorus before their songs died out and they rose from the ground to dance.

Azcan scooted forward as he watched the pod erupt into dance and song, tears flowing freely from mourning cheeks before the drummer rose to join his friends. He wrapped the strap about his neck, adjusting it so that his legs could follow their stride, knees nearly hitting the base of the drums before stamping down on the ground in a rhythmic pace. He spun around, catching the gaze of lad and lass alike, until eventually his drums were set on the ground and passed about to a different player.

Azcan didn't pretend to be the best drummer aboard the Wayward Tabernacle, but damn it all if he wasn't the best liked. He carried himself over towards the woman he'd kissed earlier, taking her hands and pulling her into a spin. Hearts leaped from chests, sweat permeating across the brows of the Svefra pod as the human Azcan passed himself along the crew, taking kiss, embrace and joyously engaging in dance with whomever would have him. Slowly, the hours passed in a flurry of delight, and the young children were sent to their quarters as the elder sons and daughters of the Crestwidow pod produced another form of delight entirely. Pills, herbs and handrolled cigarillos were passed around en masse, with each brother and sister taking freely of their preference. Azcan himself, an oddity within the Pod, took a few tablets and crunched them between his teeth. The bitter taste of a substance he never learned by name was slowly dissolved away, absorbed by his saliva and sent coursing through his blood. When it flooded his brain, he fell to his side, resting his head in the lap of yet another sister, branching as he reached for the drum he left behind. He pressed it horizontally across his chest, beating against the surface with the heels of his hands as the drug carried him over to another place entirely.

The senses almost seemed to fuse together, the rocking of the ship coinciding with the collision of hand against drum. Shivers poured down Azcan's spine as his lips parted, a groan pouring into the night as his head tipped back, light brown eyes wide but unseeing as the full breadth of the drug's effects tore into Azcan. The beating drums persisted, his hands playing along them as he reveled in the shiver each sound he created tore into his form. When he felt the drug take full hold of his senses, he rose and the Svefra followed.

Azcan found a wide grin set upon his expression as he raised his drums up the length of his body, bringing the top surface to near chest level and tightening his strap before he let his play commence in earnest. The soft patter of his hands hitting the surface was overwhelmed by the echo of the music that burst forth from it. His instrument brought rise to others contributing to the music that stemmed from his soul. Song joined the beat, followed by the strumming of a lute.

The ship erupted again, the crazed musings of intoxication. There was no cohesion in the movements of the Svefra, and Azcan was content to watch, his body moving of its own accord, feet stamping on the ground as he let his heart fling from his chest and pour into his hands. He shouted out, head tipped back as laughter spilled from his lips. He'd maintain the beat of the drums with one hand as he pulled forward one of the shipsisters and enrolled them in a dance. He'd never seen this one before, but he didn't care, casting his drum aside as he wove fingertips into hers, a haphazard spin pulling laughter from collective lips. A dance ensued in earnest but quickly enough the drummer found himself pulled, his hands taken and wordlessly he was taken to the captain's deck.

There was no one else there, with the crew all either in bed or dancing and singing right down the way it was relatively isolated. The woman pushed Azcan into a seated position, following him to the floor. Her gaze held a rainbow of colors within it, her features soft and framed with black hair that flowed and framed her face. Mesmerized by the intense coloration, the drummer's gaze didn't fall along her body as it normally might. He was consumed, lost in the eyes that for all he knew, the sight of which might have been a product of his intoxication. The touch of her hands upon his elicited shivers down his spine, a strange guidance, as a mother might have done to their child. She sat in front of him, and Azcan was quiet for a long moment, the confusion being... why? Her presence seemed almost ethereal, and his eyes remained glued to hers as she opened her mouth to speak.

"You're quite the lively one, aren't you? You try your best to keep smiles on everyone's faces, even in the wake of such tragedy!" she pointed out. Azcan knew she was talking about the mourning that was supposed to be taking place. He didn't mean to take the attention away from the dead, but... the Crestwidows seemed so happy at the diversion that he didn't regret it in the slightest. The drummer leaned back, his gaze moving to the woman's lips next. They were curved in a wide smile, one that seemed to have some sort of thought behind them. His answer was immediate,

"It's the least I can do, you know. I've not been with these folks too long, but they're treating me like family. I've seen a world with them I never thought I'd fall in love with before..." He seemed almost embarrassed at the admission. After all, the new world he referred to had nothing to do with the sea.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her eyebrows arched, a clear quizzical expression, though that smile of hers only seemed to widen.

"This feeling I'm experiencing right now... The shivers that flow with every breath I take, the surge of delight from every touch. The taste of the sea on my lips and the salt of flesh on my tongue... I never knew how different they could be... The high is a thing I've never known I could love so much..." he admitted. He didn't know why, but with this woman... this visage, he felt compelled to share everything. Her questions seemed to dig into him, his heart pulled at by her strange touch, fingers trailing along the back of his hands. The gesture was familiar, the caress of a parent, a guardian. His heart bled with such a touch, craving the chance to be known by someone so willing to ask.

"Oh? You're having fun with it. You know, Azcan..." His name spoken from her lips sent further chills coursing through him. He didn't know how she knew it, but he certainly could appreciate it if she said it again, "I can appreciate that. A generous heart, spilling with gratitude and wanting to give back? Even if you are somewhat sullied," the woman teased. Before him, her visage shifted. Her hair turned a vivid auburn, the shade receding from her eyes as her skin began to glow, a soft luminescence to it as she leaned forward.

"You're the kind of man I like. Here," she pulled at his hand, turning it so that his palm faced the sky. Slowly, the woman traced a shape into the center, a triangle turned on its point, the point ending at the connection of hand and wrist, the base nearly touching the ends of his fingers. "If you promise, Azcan, to use my gift the same way you use theirs, I'll give it to you. Spread the word of my name through your music and I'll show you a world that these drugs can scarcely compare to."

"Your name? Who... are you?"

"I'm the whisper in your ear, the shiver down your spine. Whenever your perceptions go awry, remember that I am with you... Ionu. Your friend. Your guide. Your..."

"Deity..." he completed. The Svefra within the Crestwidow pod told stories of the living Illusion, Ionu, and their playful games. A god with the mind of mischief and a lover of the things the Crestwidow loved most: drugs.

"Oh, you know, hm? Well, don't tell the Svefra. Test it on them. Explore it. And then when it's time to leave them and face the real world, do it with a dash of illusion to make it a little nicer for everyone."

Ionu seemed to speak his language. A grin cast upon his features as he leaned forward, brandishing that promise for only the Trickster to hear. "I promise," he breathed into Ionu's ear, the drummer's heart swelling with anticipation. Never in his wildest dreams had he hoped to acquire the intrigue of such a being.

"Use it well. And know... I'll be watching."

With that, the illusion faded and Azcan was left alone at the captain's deck. He fell back, staring at the starry sky as the inverted triangle formed along his palm, the present reminder of his night with a God and the weight It placed on his shoulders.

Often, Azcan looks back to Zeltiva and wonders if he should go home to his parents, but when he really thinks about it, he knows that Sunberth might he his true home after all. A lover of pleasure and the sort of man to rebuke social structure, Sunberth calls to his passionate nature in a way that Zeltiva never could. While he prefers to avoid violence and conflict, he knows that it's part of the payoff of the liberation that his soul, perhaps always, truly needed.

Interpersonal Relationships

Lani
ImageLink to CS **
Full Name: Kailani Crestwidow.
Relationship: Former Shipmate, Occasional Lover.

During Azcan's adventures with the Crestwidow pod, Lani was Azcan's staunchest companion. Best friends and lovers both, the pair shared addictions for both each other and the narcotics that passed around the Wayward Tabernacle like candy. Azcan feels vulnerable around Lani and is frightened of such vulnerability, a deep-seeded fear of attachment that exists within them both staggering what could be a beautiful relationship. When he abandoned the Crestwidows, she was the last person he saw, the lie that began their parting of ways forming a grudge deep within Lani towards the drummer. Lani's arrival in Sunberth and her encounter with Azcan at the Drunken Fish has their feelings for one another at odds. While all is most assuredly not forgiven, there is no ignoring the past, and the two fall into old habits, punishing themselves with the allure of rich ecstasy and painful feelings in conjunction.

Vogue
ImageLink to CS **
Full Name: Tove
Relationship: Acquaintance. On good terms.

Vogue and Azcan met while the drummer is performing at the Bolt Hole. Azcan's easygoing demeanor and somewhat demanding personality pulled Tove into a dance with him. The two shared a lovely night alternating between drugs, dancing, and Azcan absconding off to do his job. The two don't know a great deal about one another, but Azcan would certainly love to know Vogue a bit better.

Toph
ImageLink to CS **
Full Name: Koroshtoph Ephael Petyr.
Relationship: Acquaintance. Possible friend?

Toph and Azcan meet rather early in the Autumn of 518. The drummer enters the Pig's Foot and finds himself the target of unjustified Sunberthian violence. Toph tries to be a decent man and save the day, but his efforts are thwarted by the threat of the Sunberthian mob. When the day is saved by another means, Azcan and Toph's relationship turns into a sort of rivalry, with Toph dissatisfied with the results of their encounter. What lies next for these two is as of yet unseen, but Azcan was left with the impression that Toph doesn't quite know how to put his money where his mouth is.
