The library was a quiet refuge, some might say. A temple of knowledge and solace for those who wished to play hermit in silent contemplation. How very wrong could they be. How dangerous was knowledge when one knew one thing too many?

The artefact which the mage had found himself in possession of was quite the puzzling thing and having exhausted any avenues of figuring the thing out on his own, he had taken to books in his hearth for an answer. A mighty long bell had seen him trek the corridors of the library, scale its momentous shelves and flick through tome after tome after tome. There was no seeker he hadn’t asked for advice. But all it had left him with was a heap of leather bound books sprawled across the desk in front of him. Within their pages were poems of the goddess Tanora. In a dark corner of the library Rayn had hidden himself away to read by candlelight with the Tear in an otter skin bag on his lap. A single, marble white hand caressed the artefact like one would caress a child. It was the closest thing he had to such a thing.

With one leg crossed over the other he sat, an elbow anchored firmly in the wood, his cheek resting heavy on his knuckles. Red hair veiled his handsome face from the trying eyes of passers by, of which in this corner of the building there were very few indeed. A white tunic graced his slender musculature, sewn with golden thread. A peculiar sight, was the patchwork alchemist. A true son of his city, fine and enigmatic to say the least.

But as his eyes railed yet another paragraph which yielded no answers as to the innermost mysterious mechanism of the Tear of Tanora, disappointment only graced his handsome features. Disappointment which lead him to gaze into the Tear’s rippling wet surface once again. Before his eyes the scene played out as if alive.

When looking back on ones life could a person truly say they could connect the dots of what it was that made them who they are today? For only one dot mattered. The one which now became immortalised in magic.

There was a boy within the orb. An idealistic young redhead, no longer a child yet not quite a man still. And as Raeyn looked deeper at the reflection of himself from a decade past which he no longer recognised, he watched that boy’s innocence shatter into a million glass pieces. He watched the blood of a dead man cover his hands that trembled in horror as they clenched around the handle of a knife that took another’s life. He watched the boy’s knees give way beneath him.

Out of all the many things the Tear could have contained, why was this memory chosen? Had the gods a plan for Raeyn which in this moment he had yet to understand? Or had he simply gone without consequence for too long and it was judgement catching up with him? If so was there anywhere he could hide to avoid the horror of atonement for his mortal sin? Those were the many questions that the books in front of him had yet to answer.

“Goddess Syna, give me strength.” He whispered a silent prayer beneath his breath and he closed his eyes to tune out the intrusive thoughts of anxiety and guilt like he often did. A moment of meditation beneath his eyelids, a moment of focus on his breath and yet the questions still unanswered. It was an elixir which so desperately did he need.

No life; no consequences

The goddess Tanroa, in the Nuit's not so humble opinion, spat in the face of mortals. They were denied eternity, and pushed into graves only to renew into a new cycle of death anew. It was a laughable thing, when Savis Maren considered what Mauriel informed her. Reincarnation, past lives, the ideas hung through her mind throughout the entire season. Plagued, the undead was, with the memories of her experience within purgatory.

The Nuit shambled through her room, with neither eyes to see nor the confidence in her step to return to her bed. She rolled on the floor, screaming obscenities into the nothing only for no sound to emerge from her lips. She thrashed about in hopes for untimely release to Dira. How she hoped to collide into a surface with enough force as to shatter her skull. But, no such release arrived for her. Instead she twitched and shook, her limbs paying her demands no sort of attention.

Eventually, the Nuit forfeited her attempts and instead collapsed onto the floor. Slowly, she rose to her feet and threw herself against the wall. There, she cradled her head in her arms. The illusion of sensation cast throughout as she heaved as if to cry. But, she did not take in air, nor did she expel it. The smack of her lips was the only sound to pour from her mouth, and the Nuit again pleaded for sweet release. She was denied such a pleasure.

The Nuit trudged through the doors to the Bharani Library, her spirits decidedly plummetted to the earth as she considered the circumstances that still, forty-nine days later, haunted her. Savis Maren's saving grace was her Nuit nature, which made expression far more difficult than it was worth to pursue. The Nuit grumbled to herself as she was greeted. Closer inspection drove the greeter away, however. Formaldehyde and liquiefied flowers of the mountain permeated from her, dabbed on bandages and her body both in an awkward attempt to both preserve her corpse flesh and her dignity.

Savis sought isolation from the remainder of the denizens of the Library. Greedy possession over her life's work cast upon her senses, her head turned high as her pale silver eyes swarmed her vicinity in search of privacy for her to commence. She'd spent nearly an age allowing herself to consider the matter once Lucis delivered her the arm she'd requested. What directives need she place within it? What purpose need the gadget serve? She sought her answer over the course of many musings, at last coming to the conclusion that she desires an object she could hide on her person and utilize at a moment's notice. The musings aroused the Nuit's attention, diverting her thoughts from the hell she'd escaped and towards the future with an air of satisfaction.

However, even that distraction bowed to another of an entirely different order. Savis Maren caught sight of a blue hue in her gaze. She then caught red, and her eyes flicked to the darkest corner of the room, one she might've taken to if it already wasn't claimed. Still not seated, the Nuit took a closer look. The marvel she saw before her was something out of a myth. A young man (perhaps older than he looked to her) seemed to stare very dreamily into a strange, spherical object. He was utterly lost in it, consumed with what looked like disappointment or even shame cast upon his handsome countenance. The Nuit was, of course, obsessively nosy. Watching a man with a seeming such as his so consumed with much of anything set a curiosity within her that demanded satisfaction.

Djed pulsed within her soul, stirring at the Nuit's behest as she drew upon the fervent curiosity that festered. She guided her djed, allowing it to course along her spine, from her chest to the plane of her bck. The pleasure of personal magic was intoxicating, and it took a great deal of focus for her to maintain the steady draw of it. Djed welled within Savis Maren's silver eyes, her gaze capturing both the Inarta and his curious artifact. The Animator-turned-Aurist allowed her curiosity to branch her djed forth, piercing through the air to hover about the aura of the artifact. She couldn't help herself. Savis Maren drew closer still, rising to her feet and approaching the Inarta who seemed far too distracted to pay her mind. Detail came to light as she wove her djed and brushed against the object's aura. It was... brilliant. Cool liquid brushed against the surface of her awareness, the cool sensation pulsing through her. The aura poured upon her as a deluge, whelming in its magnitude. This object was certainly no ordinary bauble. Savis peered intently upon it, keeping her attentions on the orb as she navigated the table so that she popped up behind the Inarta.

The Nuit watched with him, catching glimpses of the scene undold, her eyes wide with shock. She couldn't quite register what happened, and the Sight flickered from her gaze as she leaned forward to whisper into the Inarta's ears. Fingers brushed gently along his shoulder, curiosity compelling her to ask,

"What was that you just saw...? A boy who looks very much like you in such a strange, lovely bauble as if locked within it." Savis Maren's words were drawn from mid-thought, unable to keep herself from musing aloud as she looked down at the Inarta man.

We don’t truly know what we have until it’s gone and only in retrospect of events would we come to appreciate that which we no longer have. For Raeyn it was a blissful peace of mind. For relative to the moments that followed, this day had been peaceful indeed. So quickly did the tides of fate change. So merciless they were.

A single touch drove the rivers of his blood to ice in his veins. Every hair on the back of his neck stood up like the fur of a frightened cat. Eyes stared straight ahead, colour drained from his cheeks for a dreaded sound soon reached his ears. Silvery cold silk of a funeral shroud caressed his senses, that was the only description one could give to the voice of Savis Maren, the stranger soon to show Raeyn just got bad things could truly get.

In his life Raeyn made many mistakes. Some form which he learned, others that would affirm him in things he thought he knew. This one would end only in one way; in Raeyn braying that there was some way to turn back time and stay in bed that day. But for that it was too late.

“You saw nothing.” He hissed, mind scrambled by the unexpectedness of this meeting so much so that all of his usual politeness was nowhere to be found. His hands of white alabaster thumbed to hide the Tear within its sack once more, to tie up loose knots.

Ready to scold a curious stranger or a nosy nobody, Raeyn quickly turned in his seat. Suddenly his flaring temper evaporated, quenched by the frosty face he came to look upon. Nothing alive had ever been this cold. The dagger of fear in his heart twisted painfully, halting its beat till soon enough the colour of Raeyn’s own freckle visage would match the dead white hue of the woman’s. Was it the face of sickness itself he looked at? It couldn’t be. Even the plagued still had a hue. She was something else.

“Who... are you?” His voice trembled, quiet as a mouse cornered by a cat. Suddenly the prospect of her seeing the truth of his sin wasn’t quite as frightening.

It would never occur to Savis Maren when she looked at the strange artefact that she might be staring at the tear of the Goddess of Time. Instead, she surmised that the bauble of his was the work of some powerful mage. The images she saw were fantastic and hardly believable, and she wasn't able to decide whether they were the product of arcane telling or a trick of the mind. However, the reaction that the Inarta bore once his agony was exposed tipped Savis Maren off to enough. Her lips curved very slightly, a wry smile cast upon the Nuit's expression as she mused silently in the expanse of her own mind. Savis listened to the hiss in Raeyn's voice, though when the Inarta turned around to face the Nuit she felt a surge of pleasure flow down her spine at the expression he took. Savis Maren was far too accustomed to the sight of those wilting in her presence. Part of her thrived in the apprehension in Raeyn's stare while the rest of her reviled in the fear she saw in it.

The Nuit was filled with conflict, unsure of how she should receive the myriad of emotions she watched surface within the Inarta. Rather than continue to focus her Sight upon the bauble of his, she set it upon the redhead himself. Savis Maren felt the strange, wet texture unlatch itself from the streamlined pool of her awareness. The deluge ended and Savis felt a gasp push forth from her lips. In its wake, the Nuit caught the sensation of jagged edges. She could taste the tension that worked within the beautiful Inarta's musculature. The Nuit, in another life, might have held an attraction for this man. So stark was his beauty when at last she got a proper look at him that she nearly shivered in her place. Her features, however, did not and could not flush. She bore no physical sign of the momentary flicker of something that might have resembled arousal in another world. Instead, her lips curved into the closest her decaying musculature could form to a grin.

Raeyn's reaction told Savis Maren some of what she needed to know. Whatever the images that plagued the Inarta were, they weren't pleasant for him. Often, something that stirred such visceral reactions from someone was so precious and flecked with great regret. Was the bauble some sort of window into the past? Savis hummed softly as she watched the redheaded godling stow the Tear of Tanroa so excitedly into its casing. Savis Maren did not ascertain what the object was, only that it and the images it relayed were both precious and terrifying to the Inarta. The Nuit quite enjoyed holding such an understanding, and she allowed the Sight to unravel and flicker away as she answered her new companion.

"I? You may address me as Savis Maren, my dear, beautiful contemporary. I've come to steal away in the depths of my musings, and yet here I find you occupying my space. I have musings to absorb into, Inarta boy and you are planted in the spot I'd much prefer to engage them in. Please, if you would, allow me to take this space so that you might drift into sadness wonderland elsewhere. Unless..."

The Nuit trailed off, a playfulness in her tone as she set her backpack on the table. She pulled from it the marvel that Edward Lucis created for her. The gadget arm he'd designed was nearly two feet long and so wonderfully thin. It bore no signs of life within it just yet, but it was well-designed and opposable in every way. Savis found the fingers to be nearly clenched into a fist and drew them to their full lengths before she told the Inarta,

"As you can see, I'm very busy. If you'd prefer to stay and remain as you are gawking at the open air, by all means feel free to do so. Otherwise, I've appropriated this space," she said with a tone of finality about her.

While the skin of living beings spoke volumes of their mood, a pale corpse spoke nothing. Empty as a casket was this vessel. A glass vase for emotions, as complex as any mortal’s but alas, regrettably plain. Thus, as black lips stretched and contorted into something reminiscent of a grotesque smile, there was nothing Raeyn saw in it but disgust. She was a villain staring at him from her invisible throne, plotting her dark bidding. Such darkness the alchemist had no time for.

He knew next to nothing of those creatures, the Nuit, if one could even call them that. The knowledge of their existence stretched about as far back as his memory of one or two faded paragraphs on the magic of animation he may or may not have read in his childhood in this very library. To read about them was one thing. Yet to find oneself surrounded by the miasma of formaldehyde and perfume, face to face with a queen of ice was an experience not so easily put into words. One that Raeyn could have gone his whole life without.

Yielding a name seemed as if the woman assumed Raeyn wanted it, for the intention behind his questions was not quite of who but rather what she was. That wasn’t exactly something he could so brazenly ask now, could he? And as she lay her claim to his spot, chilled to the bone by shock as he was, Raeyn could have almost succumbed to her demands if only to retain what little sanity lingered in his world. But it was not to be so. There are a few things stronger in the mage then even the will for self preservation; one of which was curiosity.

And the contraption she pulled out of her bag was just that; curious indeed. A mechanical arm like object which would take an untrained eye like his days to study. But why would one go to all the trouble to construct such a thing? It was far too pressing a question to omit asking.

Perplexed by the object, the proud alchemist allowed some of her rudeness to slide by unnoticed. It wasn’t that her blatant disregard for his majestically massive ego hadn’t gone unfelt, simply unanswered. Against his better judgement Raeyn addressed her once more. “There’s plenty of other space in this library for you. But seeing as it is this one you demand, one can only assume there’s purpose to it.” Nodding to the mechanical contraption in her grip Raeyn saw his boldness take him. And as his feet lifted to rest against the edge of the desk he challenged her. “So what is it, Savis Maren, that you so desperately need this space for? Without a satisfactory answer I’m afraid I cannot move. That’s a promise from one mage to another.”

The end of his demand brought Raeyn’s lips to a crescent. Behind his eyes flames of curiosity flickered. Like a hungry dog he was salivating at the mere prospect of a juicy secret. A flutter of eyelashes sweetened the demand a little but stubborn as a mule, the mage meant what he said.

Savis Maren felt no such obligation to share the intricacies of her undead nature with any mortal, let alone one that was nothing more than a stranger. Nuit were an ilk seldom appreciated anywhere within Mizahar, but in Lhavit they carried a particularly hostile reputation. Perhaps it was their isolation in the mountains or their relative ease in disguising themselves when compared to enemies like the Zith... But Lhavit held no love for her kind and Savis remained within the city as more of an unwelcome guest than she cared to admit. The Nuit immediately caught Raeyn's gaze wander to the strange contraption. A purchase from the renowned Gadgeteer, Edward Lucis, it was a marvel that she'd never willingly separate herself from. The tool, she surmised, when complete, would be more agile than her own limbs, a notion she very much looked forward to bearing witness to. Savis Maren held the 'ball' in her court, the subject of their conversation turned towards her purpose in the library.

And herein lies the conundrum. He admits to being a mage! He could be another animator, hoping to goad me into sharing my insights... only to steal them from under me! Or perhaps, the stripling that he is, he's merely seeking to indulge in a few harmless questions. Regardless, to approach with caution is the best means forward, the Nuit mused inwardly. The Inarta's lips curved into a smile as he admitted his knowledge of magic, and Savis Maren allowed an equally present smile to captivate her features. The woman's cheeks were stiff, decay beginning to set upon her. The body she inhabited would remain preserved for a time longer, but the more time she spent within it the stiffer it grew.

"Ah, you say my name, but you don't introduce yourself! And here I thought that Lhavitians possessed a modicum of class. Well," she began, the smile turning to a smirk as she extended out the limb fully. It stretched out on the table as the Nuit loosed the backpack from her shoulder. Savis Maren's rucksack met the surface of the stone bench opposite of Raeyn. The Nuit produced from it her painter's kit, including her long, beautiful black brush and the single tube of paint she possessed, a thick blank ink that she used for all manner of magical practice. She set the tools in a straight line, taking up a wholly conservative amount of space while leaving the arm extended and untouched by anything else.

"I suppose if that's what's needed for you to relinquish your place... I require space apart from the prying eyes of the Seekers. While their presence isn't unwelcome, I find them distracting. When the goal of world magicks is to pull forth the cleanest product imaginable, such distractions are little more than a nuisance. Especially since none of them wish to actually learn something," she answered, a wistful tone in her voice.

"If it's impossible for you to move, then stay and join me in my venture. Perhaps a strapping young man can provide the proper... insights to make my creation even more splendid, no? Such long, powerful arms. Surely, my dear Inarta, you bear some sort of noble trade. You also called yourself mage. I'd much like the company of a contemporary, if not a peer!"

Savis Maren's words took on the rather sultry tone of manipulation. How she prized the opportunity to comminucate with other mages. Savis, however, couldn't turn to the Towers for such association. Nor could she approach Elena or any of the other known names in the city, who deigned themselves too grand for those without city connections. This man was before her and seemed far too willing to entrench himself in the midst of conversation. A willingness that even seemingly tempered his undisguised horror at the nature of the woman in front of him.

"Would you enlighten me, my dear, as to your name and disciplines of choice? I'll start us off, of course. I, my dear friend, am an Animator. I've come so that I can practice in peace yet still have resources available to me should I choose to access them," she informed the Inarta. Next, Savis Maren produced the schematic she'd acquired from Lucis, far more than eager to begin the arduous task ahead of her.

Amusement flashed across his features as the Nuit commented as to his state of decorum. Boundless as it was, polished by years of his mother’s tuition, she had a while yet to go before she was to become a recepient of his sweetness. And much like a cup of floral tea in which sugar cubes met their watery grave, Raeyn knew how to be sweet. Even when pressed so gently however he did not reveal his name.

But much to his delight, Raeyn’s stubbornness paid off before his eyes. Each object which Savis produced from her satchel was immediately noted down in the vast archives of his memory: the inks, the brushes, the paint. No details seemed too unimportant to solve the mystery that was Savis Maren.

Her manipulation would fall on deaf ears. Perhaps any ordinary man would be wooed by the sultry sweetness of female complements, providing she wasn’t an animated cadaver of course, but Raeyn’s own interests lay so far outside of the real. Of ordinary. He had eyes on one creature and one creature only. And that creature certainly was no woman. It was what she said next that would be cause enough to persuade stubborn Raeyn to relinquish a little information about his own life. Something in exchange for something.

”I, my dear friend, am an Animator.” the spicy sweet words fell on the knowledge thirsting ears of the Inarta like water into parched land. In this very simple way she had him hooked like a fish. She could pull his string, drag him further onto dry land. But would she?

“Knew it.” He whispered beneath his breath, confirming his suspicions. “I must admit, however, I had imagined your kind to work in huge labs like the scholars of my own magical art do. Yet here you are. Regardless, if that was the case then we never would have met.”

He lifted his feet off the desk and planted them back on the hard floor, assuming a far more inviting sitting position. The orb in it’s bag he tucked beneath his fur cloak, out of sight and out of mind.

“My name is Raeyn. And since you asked so kindly; I’m an Alchemist. A student of the Twilight Tower.” She’d be deaf not to hear caution in his words. Great caution indeed not to divulge anymore than necessary for now. Though being tempted with the objects of his fascination had a funny way of loosening his tongue. “I must admit Animation isn’t quite my area of expertise. From what I understand of it, it’s very different from the realms of Alchemical transmutation.”

Soon enough his tone shifted from apprehension to match her in the seductive politeness of a man who wished to manipulate his way to gain that which he desired. Though everything about her repulsed him, her mind was a magnet. A paradox. To make an omelette one had to break a few eggs!

“It must be awfully lonely working all on your own. In exchange for a few trade secrets I wouldn’t be entirely unwilling to keep you company, my dear friend.” He smiled. The grin of a wolf in sheeps clothing. Good job Raeyn was too pretty to be menacing. “Don’t worry. Things like this are safe with me. After all, an animator I am not. What good could I do with the knowledge? Won’t you satisfy my curiosity, dear miss Maren?

It looked like in her admission, the man known as Raeyn found exactly what he sought after. It was easy to see the utter enthrallment that befell the Inarta. Savis Maren watched as his teeth pressed together, his words whispered before at last he spoke out. The notion wasn't one that eluded the Nuit. She understood his dilemma, for much more powerful Nuit with grander fortunes and ambitions worked with tools and gadgets that she hadn't the faintest clue how to create. Savis Maren often purchased the tools she required, and even initially began working for Edward Lucis as a means to encourage the knowledge of Gadgeteering. However, the Summer forced her into another situation altogether and she was left destitute because of it. Fortunately, she did not lack for funds, the patronism of a particular, curious soul. Such a relationship allowed her to continue her wretched existence within Lhavit.

When the Inarta introduced himself, Savis Maren made it a point for her dulcet tones to stretch the Inarta's name in long, sultry syllables. The Nuit played a strange game with the Inarta, a smirk cast upon her lips as she listened to Raeyn's blessed dilvugence. Alchemy? The magical discipline was one the Nuit heard of within the high citadel of Sahova, but never had the opportunity to know more than in passing. The life of the Nuit, Savis Maren was one of strife. Enslavement (or rather, indentured servitude) had her at the hands of more powerful mages. The idea of working with this mortal immediately snapped within her mind, but she was not so expressive. She kept her ravenous desire for knowledge at bay. Savis Maren allowed her abilities to remain elusive, for Raeyn already proved his intrigue. The Nuit nodded in approval, for the Towers were the aspiration of most of Lhavit's mages.

Most.

Savis Maren did not seek after the prestige of the Towers. She believed it beyond her reach, the prejudice for Nuit within the city limiting the favor she could curry so soon into her existence within the city.

Perhaps in time, she mused before listening with decidedly absent breath for the Inarta to formulate those sweet candy words of his. An undeniably beautiful man, Savis Maren owed the passage of time to not being enraptured by him. Instead, she let easy, silken laughter part from her. The Nuit recognized manipulation when it was woven, careful to invoke such heartstrings when able in turn.

However, Savis Maren allowed those manipulations to run their course. After all, was she being manipulated when they shared similar goals? Clearly, Raeyn hungered after knowledge and power, wanting the access to the world magic Savis owed her existence and now her passions to.

"Oh, my dear friend, even for a supremely beautiful one such as yourself, such services are hardly free," she began. Savis Maren's tone was rich in amusement, her tones carrying only for Raeyn to hear as she unstoppered her paints and used the cap as a reservoir in which to pour some of the contents of her waterskin into. Savis used the tool specifically for this purpose and stowed it when she was done. The brush then dipped into the water, swirling it about and allowing liquid to bring life to the bristles. She flicked excess water from the brush before dipping it into the paints.

"However, I have an offer for you, Raeyn. Such a young, strapping man might be just what I need. My frail form couldn't hope to have access to the... muscle memory you possess," she whirled her tones in sweet rhythm as she mused on her phrasing. Savis Maren called upon the mystiques her chosen discipline offered, far more eager to use Raeyn to her advantage than educate him in any sort of civilized fashion.

"My dear Raeyn, I'll be sure to fully satisfy your curiosity." The Nuit's black tongue dashed over her black lips, silver eyes trained upon the young Inarta in a manner that certainly did not befit her undead condition. Of course, the Nuit felt playful, teasing, even. She had the Inarta in a snare and she'd take full advantage of his weakness.

And with that, the Nuit commenced with her efforts. She'd draw from the stone table nearby and begin the process of opening the area to the practice of her craft. She folded the gadget arm at the wrist and elbow, allowing it to occupy less space as she also formed the opposable hand into a fist. Then, she raise her brush properly. Black paint coated the surface of the table as she created a large circle that easily covered the entirelty of the tool. The other side of the table was left devoid of tools of any kind. Savis allowed her toolkits to inhabit the chair, leaving her with as much space as she could muster as she beckoned the Inarta to join her.

The Nuit traversed the table, drawing a straight line before the shape of a second, equivalent circle cast into being. The circle would easily fit the Source, which for a rare occasion, was mortal and sentient. Excitement bubbled at the surface of her mind, expanding wildly outwards as she completed the twin circles.

Next, Savis Maren decided to add a slight level of complexity within her Animation circles. She'd become more used to implementing Glyphs to her advantage and so she began her efforts. Savis began at the circle the gadget arm was held within. First, she brushed the word 'Destination' into the center of the circle, having allowed more than enough space for the word to be relatively easy to read. Then, at the outer edges of the same circle, she began to paint a second rune. She'd place her intentions in the combination of runes. creating an alternating pattern around the circle. She sought to implement her techniques in different forms, decorating her Animation circles but also attempting to stretch her understanding of Glyphing,

Abase-djed pechi. Abase-djed pechi. Abase-djed pechi.

"Joining life and djed," she translated, completing the circle with repeated instances of the phrase until her first focus was completed. Certainly, Raeyn would have joined in the chimes it took to form the circles and first glyph. She looked to Raeyn before she motioned to the other side.

"Come. You'll learn first-hand what the discipline of Animation can do," she assured him.

Friend. Such a strange notion coming from the lips of a stranger for whom Raeyn wished to become anything but that. But it seemed they had a common interest on this day. Something priceless to gain from this interaction thus not only did Raeyn decided to play along, he made the choice to play nice.

He raised an eyebrow as demands wrapped in sickly sweet complements reached his ears, but said nothing, intending to hear out the woman who prepared the workspace for her creations before his very eyes. He caught onto clues in what she said as to how this magic may work. The mention of muscle memory made the connection between the strange gadget arm and his own djed, figuring out partial truths. But there were still more questions to be asked. How did it work? What would the end product become? How many similarities did Animation have with Alchemy and how many differences?

Guesses weren’t enough for Raeyn. He had to see her in work. Such opportunities hadn’t the habit of falling out of the sky. Only then did Raeyn realise just how lucky he was to meet such a creature as Savis in all her grotesque glory.

There was something in the way she spoke that kept him guarded however. Her conceited nature pricked at his skin like needless, obvious manipulation could not be hidden. In such a situation one might ask ‘what’s the catch?’ But not Raeyn. He was a risk taker, prepared to worry about consequences later.

As Savis drew the oddly reminiscent circles, Raeyn took note. But instead of the one, like he was used to working with, there were two now. One designed for the mechanical arm. And one for...?

Obediently he took his seat beside her, maintaining his silence, studying. The glyphs came next. One which he remembered from a book but forgot the meaning of, if he’d ever even known it in the first place. Another, entirely unfamiliar. But soon enough Savis lifted the veil of mystery from the glyphs.

’Joining life and djed’

Those words too he committed to memory. With him hands crossed on his lap, he traced the invisible intricacies of the glyphs with his thumb in the palm of his other hand so that if he was ever to forget those words again, at least his muscles wouldn’t.

“Well aren’t you a blessing in disguise.” He smirked. “So tell me this, how does this whole thing work?”

No life; no consequences

Luckily for the Nuit, Raeyn did not know that he needed to settle into the circle for her magic to be successful. Lucky for two reasons. The first being she was not yet done with them, requiring the Glyphs she intended to form about them. Both sides would be adorned with foci. Savis Maren wished for the success of this venture, as both a testament to how far she could stretch Animation without creating the golems she'd seen in Sahova, but also to know just how intelligent her designs could be. Savis listened to Raeyn's questions but did not turn to face the Inarta. Instead, she shifted her posture, returning to the table as she raised her brush once again. She dipped it into the water, twirling the brush about to shed the vestiges of used paint. Once the tool was properly cleaned, she shifted and dipped it into her black paints.

Savis swirled the brush in the paint, ensuring a nice coat on the long, well-kept black bristles before she began her efforts anew. Rich words poured from Savis Maren as a fount of knowledge, eager to share with the intriguing being without revealing so much as to allow him independence from her tutelage.

"First, as you can see, we create the Twin Circles. The first circle houses the Destination, the object in which we wish to bestow the properties that ambient djed carries in the forms of knowledge, mobility and the semblance of life. I've labeled the Destination as such. Next," she began and with her words the brush fell onto the stone table. She brushed the word 'Source' into the edge of the circle closest to the straight, unbroken line. Following her imbuing the rune, she dipped her brush anew and continued her efforts.

Pond-vino Nader. Pond-vino Nader. Pond-vino Nader.

"Knowledge shared and born anew."

The runes surrounded the circle, an unbroken line of text that the Nuit took several more chimes to imprint. While she painted, however, Savis Maren spoke in answer to Raeyn's question, an askance she only addressed in part.

"Then, we follow with the Source. The Source is the fount from which knowledge, skills, and movement are born. The manipulation of the djed within the Source sends information to the Destination. The process is somewhat jarring, but altogether painless and lacking in adverse effects to the Source. If you would, Raeyn, take your place within the Source and we can begin."

It didn't occur to Savis Maren to tell Raeyn that she imbued the circles with Glyphs to augment their strength and create ease in the manipulation of the djed. It seemed obvious enough to the woman, who despite having tutored a student before wasn't very good at the craft. Cultivating knowledge in another was the afterthought when they attended her Animation rituals. Instead, her mind was focused on the task, with education a means of filling in the gaps of time.

While the paint dried, the Nuit looked to each of the circles. She assured herself that they and the Glyphs were closed and preserved, a smile cast upon her visage. Silver eyes were alight with joy, the tedious performance of Animation the light of her undeath. Clearly, Savis Maren showed the passion. It poured from her decaying flesh and brought with it a skip in her step as she moved to the center of the table, in between both circles.

Savis Maren, at this juncture had little to add to the teaching. Instead, she allowed her mind to clear, her eyes falling shut as she allowed the encounter with this strange, majestic man fall by the wayside. Now, she was solely focused on what followed. The use of a Source that wasn't her own mind, the manipulation of ambient djed augmented by Glyphs encircling each of the Animation circles. The concepts excited the Nuit more than Raeyn. perhaps, might catch sight of, but within her there was the pure, unfettered joy of exploring new territory.

"So it begins," she muttered, her fingers curled over the stonework of the table, her teeth worrying at her black lower lip.
