Madeira was attracting a lot of attention from the nightlife of Sartu as she made her way to Zintila from The Den of the Lost. It had been a strange couple of days for her, and the adventure showed on every piece of skin she had left. She walked tall and dignified, wearing a simple linen shift that did little more than covering her modesty as it strained around her pregnant belly, her hair unbound and dark with grease and blood and loamy soil. Around her shoulders was an enormous, musty bear pelt cloak several times too big for her that trailed behind her dainty dancing slippers. On her back was a bunging leather rucksack that looked like it had been to Hai and back. In her hands was a large round textured stone that she cradled like a child.

But that was not what made the citizens of Lhavit's quietest peak jump out of her way as they saw her approach, and stare at her back long after she had passed. Blood darkened her simple shift and the wet fabric clung to the great trenchs of claw marks that mauled the right side of her body from shoulder to thigh. All the way around her throat and right wrist was a surgically straight slice that shone wet and red to the quivering tendons. Half restored flaps of flesh were open across her legs, as if the broken bone within had exploded out and were hastily repaired. The only part of her not cut and bruised were her head and right arm, but both were the tender, smooth pink of new skin. She should be dead, people thought. Many times dead. But not only did the wounds not seem life threatening, despite their grizzly appearance, the woman walked as if she hardly felt them.

Madeira held the stone tight in the crook of her arm, thanking Leth for his stray miracle star, and Dira for allowing it to exist. She should have died half a dozen times, but she always came back. The fight through the misty peaks showed her just how cruel nature was, and the fall from the skybridge that put her there showed her just how cruel people could be, too. Yet simply knowing first hand that it was true was gave her peace. She would never be caught unawares again. The lesson was brutal in its teaching, yet she learned something people stronger than herself have died before truly realizing.

As soon as the thought crossed her mind, she felt something in the unbreakable stone shift in her white-knuckle hold. Like a blackened log crumbling to ash, the stone started to flake away in pieces as the first light of dawn filtered over the mountains. Eventually, before Madeira's astonished eyes, the stone dissolved completely, and in her arms was a silvery substance that flickered with the same star fire that had followed her fallen star to earth the night she found it. As the
fire touched her bare skin she was blinded by a flash of bright light, and in her head a voice rang as clear and strong as a bell in the confused noise of her thoughts.

“As the rays of my beloved Syna reach across the horizon, I wish to give you this bit of insight. The changes you’ve experienced were not without a purpose. They were meant to serve as a source of reflection. Change is an important force that drives all life. How you dealt with the changes you were faced with; changes in body, mind and even in the minds of others, speaks greatly to who you are as a person. As you continue to live your life, take time to reflect on what you experienced and ponder your reactions to the change. Did you hide them or hide from them? Did you embrace them? Did you exploit them or use
them for the betterment of others? As you search for the deeper meaning of change and how you deal with it, know that I, Leth, God of Thought and Change have gifted you that opportunity. Also, as a gift and a reminder, I offer a piece of my light. The stone you discovered contains a piece of starfire. In your hands, it will undergo its own change. Take it with my blessing.”

The light vanished, and the voice was no more than an reverberating echo in her head as she blinked the blindness from her eyes. In her hands the silvery substance had reformed into a little silver skeleton key, cool and light to the touch, the bow made of pearls in the shape of a human skull.

Madeira didn't have time to examine it properly. As the light faded, and the people around her were blinking away their own blindness and peering around for the source of the mysterious light, her body started to draw down. The eternal high, proud set of her back caved inwards. Her hands, one still clutching the key, fluttered over her body as the miracle she was relying on faded away. Face twisted in a silent scream, every injury she had been numb to for four days made themselves known for the first time. Her skin was painted agony, her bones wept and her breath came hard and fast through a throat that could feel the air on both sides.

"No, no, Leth!" she wailed, begging the voice to come back and restore its miracle as Syna gilded the cobbles at her feet. “My lord, please!"

The god did not answer, but a man did. A young lad fresh from the port, his cart laden with wine caskets pulled by a pair of pastel Okomo. He helped the battered woman into the wagon, wedged between the wine, to carry her to the Catholicon on the next peak. Why was the healing facility so far away? As Madeira laid in the wagon, staring up at the stripe of lightening blue between the crates, she felt the baby kick in agitation. At least the wounds were not going to kill us, she reassured it as she rubbed circles into her belly. If they were they had the opportunity days ago.

Time gave her the opportunity to compose herself, and when the boy helped her down from his wagon, she thanked him genuinely with a voice almost like herself. Thick pearly tears were still caught in her eyelashes, but she grit her teeth against her more pathetic whimpering and walked up the winding narrow staircase and into the Catholicon as tall as she could manage.

The hospital was as opulent as anything in Lhavit, and impossibly old. A narrow hall opened into a cavernous reception hall topped all in pale marble, with a great winding staircase of glittering spyglass set in the middle of the floor. The walls were packed with jars and supplies right to the lofty ceiling, accessed by handsome oak ladders set in tracks on the walls. Madeira ignored all of it. Her eyes were firmly on the beautiful Eypharian behind a reception desk, who's six
hands whirling about with ink, letters, coins and a pot of tea.

The woman looked up as Madeira approached, and all her activities paused for half a tick before she called sharply for a doctor.

79th of Fall 518av

Fall held a lot of mysteres that needed to be uncovered. Teeryian loved a good mystery, and when she was sitting in one of the back rooms studying with Senri over one if the books he had written himself.

"What kind of plant grows in the cool climate? It also makes up most of Lhavits plant life and it can be more commonly found in Misty Peaks." 'I know this one, I do, I know it starts with a B... I think?' Teeryian thought to herself. She furrowed her brows and placed her palm under her chin. "It's on the tip of my tongue, I just know it I do." She replied gently, but eagerly. She wanted to get this one right, even with the amount of silent studying she's been doing with herself, she can never get the questions right. She's been confusing so many flora and fauna; her mind felt like it wanted to go numb. The gears were turning fast, and perhaps too fast in her own head. Her train of thought was interrupted with a more... urgent and highly critical matter.

Rasika was helping an injured woman with a nice bulge jutting out of her anterior, the front of her body. She was escorting the woman to a room her arms supporting the injured human to the best of her capability. Rasika was calling for a doctor, Senri honed into the calls for assistance and he put his herbalism book down and grabbed Teeryian. She complied without a word and quickened her pace to keep up with Senri as best she could. With her thin legs and her unsteady pace, she half-stumbled, half-ran with Senri. Trying to control her footwork and trying not to trip Senri.

Aleesia followed the two downstairs and had a Healer's Kit with her. "Let's hurry it up you two!" She chided St them, ushering them downstairs with her hands full of equipment.

Once the group met at the staircase, the four gathered their nerves and helped Maderia into the second operating room. With her cuts painted and caked all over her body there was some serious need for attention and everyone needed to have a determined sense of tranquility among themselves. Especially Teeryian.

In order to control her thought process, she needed to focus on her breathing. It was raso right now as she helped Maderia onto an operating table. Rasika and Alessia were getting the equipment ready in case Teeryians Ra'Keli doesn't work it's way through the woman in pain and from the looks of it, pregnant for sure. At least more than a few months with her belly sores showing and her tightness is easily visible as Teeryian undressed just the top of Maderias shirt that was covered in tears and rips. 'What on Mizahar did this to her?' Teeryian thought.

She said her sleeve down from her left hand which had Ra'Keli's Mark tattooed onto. It was large and covered the majority of her palm. "Dear Ra'Keli, please I pray you, give me the strength to heal this woman who bears life inside her belly." As she spoke, her own words felt soothing as a ray of light shining down on Teeryian and Maderia igniting the operating room, Teeryians hand glowed a vibrant golden sun-yellow glow as she gently swayed her hands all around Maderia injuries, the wounds might sting a bit, but her Mark will clean the wounds, improve the sanitation process, and it'll prevent any infection. Rasika and Aleesia as well as Senri were gathering up cloths and bandages after placing special ointment on Maderia. She will have a speedy recovery and the baby (assuming there will only be one) will be checked on as well after they get Maderia bandaged up.

To Have Outlived The Night

It seemed as soon as Madeira caught the Eypharian receptionists attention, she was being handled. First by the receptionist herself, who's many arms were supporting her by the shoulder, waist and hip. The spiritist sagged into her, grateful for the support, even as she ignored the woman's rapid fire questions. What was her name? Where did she live? When was she due? What happened?

She helped her up the great, glittering staircase to the second floor, where a half breed Symenestra appeared out of nowhere. The woman had red eyes and the pale, papery skin of a cave dweller, the tips of small fangs pressing into her plush lower lip. She didn't help take the Spiritist's weight from the Eypharian. Even in her pain fogged state Madeira remembered Dex, her one and only Symenestra friend back in Alvadas. The boy had a skeleton like glass, she recalled. The Symenestra woman wasn't asking question but was feeling around her swollen belly with fine, black tipped fingers, tracing strange outlines low on her abdomen. Then suddenly Madeira was handed off to another pair of hands. These ones were human and strong, the sleeves rolled up to expose a fine fuzz of reddish hair. She looked up, dazed and on fire and confused, to see him smiling down at her with an incredibly gentle expression. He added his soft reassurances to the flurry of questions and demands that were flying around them.

She didn't see the Eypharian leave, but suddenly the desert skinned woman was replaced with a pale, delicate Konti. The girl looked barely into adulthood, possibly sixteen or seventeen, though she knew Konti ages looked to be deceptively young. Her skin glimmered in patterns of pearlescent scales, her shining white hair was pulled back, and her pretty green eyes were full of concern as she helped Madeira into the third floor on onto a tall, hard bed. Thankfully she was the quiet type, and she just had to suffer the two doctors and the noise that was cleaving through her head.

They looked to be in some kind of operating theatre. The two doctors were buzzing around, fetching evil, glittering metal instruments and vials of gods knew what kind of medicine. It looked almost exactly like the corner of the Twelue where the Constellations let Savis Maren and herself prepare the Nuit's ritual of transference. A messy process that involved gutting a corpse and preserving it with acid and salts. Suddenly Madeira decided she wanted to be anywhere else than there.

She moved to sit up but a hand pressed gently down on her chest. The smiling red haired man hovered over her.

"Easy, everything is okay now."

"Get off of me", she weakly swatted his hand away, but it didn't move.

"You need to be treated", the Symenstra's tone was harsher and offered no soft reassurance to blunt its edges. "Sit still while Teeryian heals you."

And suddenly the room was filled with a soft, divine glow. Madeira couldn't help but sigh as a prayer was said over her body.

"Dear Ra'Keli", a sweet, calm voice said above her. "Please I pray you, give me the strength to heal this woman who bears life inside her belly."

The light was cleansing, somehow. Like it's glow could be penetrating to her very bones, and erasing the blackness it found there. Rak'keli's mark hovered over her, a lily on the palm of the young Konti. The pain was still there, and her body was still flayed open, but Madeira was grateful for every bit of her light.

The man, with sterile gloves over his hands, was packing a foul smelling ointment into the deepest of her wounds while the deftly fingered Symenestra was threading a thick surgery needle with fine silk thread. Holding the needle in one hand she cut open the thin shift and pulled it out from under Madeira, throwing it into a bucket used for biologically contaminated material. She pulled a paper thin sheet over Madeira's body to protect her modesty, but that was an empty measure when the entire left half of her body had to be exposed to piece back together.

"What's your name?" The Symenstra demanded, and through teeth clenched with pain the Spiritist spit her answer.

"Madeira Craven."

"What happened, Madeira Craven?"

Where should she start? With the magic, glowing rock that fell from the sky? With the fatal fall from the bridge? With the bear or the rainbow or being decapitated on the beach? She was in to much pain and too foggy with frustration and confusion to weave any proper tales. She went with the bare, naked truth.

"There was a rock, from Leth. It fell in my backyard. And it... It kept me alive. I fell from the skybridge leading to Sartu. Gods, I fell for ages. Down and down. But I survived. Then I had to get through the Misty Mountains with nothing but the clothes on my back and my ghost. I met a bear, and it ate a good chunk of my shoulder and tore off my arm. Then a few days later, after my arm grew back, we met this... This rainbow. But it was not a normal rainbow, it was full of knives and teeth and hatred. It chased me, separated my from my ghost, backed me against a vertical cliff and cut off my head. Leth's rock saved me again, and I woke up on the beach, and this hunter took me back to his mother and they dressed me up as best they could. Then I came back up the Okomo trail from Tranquil port. But now the rock has dissolved, and the pain came back when it left. It left me this... key, but I don't know what it's for. Leth's voice was in my head, and he said I had to 'reflect on the change.'"

Madeira was dangerously close to tears now. The whole story she lived was all panic and fright and helplessness. She breathed out hard through her nose to centre herself. A Craven does not weep like a little girl.

"Is the baby okay?" she begged to know. "I don't know how to check. It's been a rough couple of days."

The Symenstra and the red haired man looked at each other, and she couldn't quite make out what the look meant, but she was sure it was not good.

"Have you taken any hallucinogenic substances recently?" The man asked gently, looked up with a smile from where he was rearranging the flesh of her thigh. "Or maybe something that could have been laced with a substance you didn't know about?"

Madeira's mouth worked open and closed, floored by the accusation and unable to articulate her frustration.

"I'm not... I'm not on drugs you idiot! I know what happened! Ask Rothsam, he's the slimy little petcher who let me fall off the skybridge!"

"Have you taken drugs in the past, recreationally?"

"I mean, yes, but that was in Alvadas-"

"Is there anyone who can tell us where you've been?"

"Um, Emma, my ghost, but I don't have soulmist to summon her-" Madeira's head was pounding and her voice sounded fuzzy to her ears, like everything was getting further away. The baby gave a mighty kick to her belly, and her agitation spiked, fuelled by her confusion and frustration and no little amount of fear.

"Do you or any family members have a history of mental illness?" the smiling man was asking, in his gentle voice full of pity.

"Teeryian!" Madeira turned her head to the only person who hasn't outright called her a liar yet, her hand groping for this one ally she might have left. "It's Terryian, right? Please, you believe me, don't you? I'm not high! I'm not delusional! I know what happened and what I saw!"

To Have Outlived The Night

Teeryian was caught off guard, as soon as she had healed the woman and the child; she had a spike of energy and Teeryian was aiding Alessia with some pain relief liquid antidote for Maderia. Senri and Alessia were asking rather rude questions about drugs and whether or not if she was on them, Teeryian thought that it would be harmful to the baby that she carries if she were on drugs because that would affect the both of them right?

Maderia grabbed Teeryian and she yelled in shock and nearly dropped some herbs in her hand that she was preparing for Alessia. The story about Leth and a fallen rock days after the Moon Festival felt strangely coincidental, but the rock revived her two times on count as well, so she must be a devoted follower to the Moon God. A strong believer as well. But hearing the story from a pregnant woman who was torn up sounded blasphemous and she couldn't bare to believe it, but something deep inside wanted to give this female a chance at explaining herself with such a cruel detailed story. She wanted to make sure that she wasn't on drugs, because what if it was seriously harming the child she so carries underneath the protection if her tight rounded belly?

The thought of a young innocent being that was being introduced to drugs was overwhelming. Teeryian wanted that baby safe more than anything, but her patient is also important as well because she came all the way here from the Skybridge and that was believe, but if only someone knew how to summon a ghost in this building that would be of help. With that ghost they could get true confirmation, but Teeryian continued to see through the story. Holding onto the herbs with accuracy to the best of her ability, because herbs are an important part of nature and very valuable. If she dropped them onto the dirty floor they might not be as good maybe?

She simply placed the herbs onto the table next to the liquid being made in progress. She looked over at Maderia and then to her companions. This debate seemed one sided.

"I think that Maderia has suffered on her journey here. Something or someone has damaged her." Teeryian recalled the cuts and sores that was painted across Maderias body. "Come on you two, if Leth sent her a rock that saved her life twice than that has to be believable. Look at her a bear did that to her so she says. Inspect the claw marks, and the cuts on her body that are healing right this moment. She musn't be lying." Teeryian claimed innocently as she began to mix in ingredients that were laid out on the table she was waiting for the two to make their statements.
