The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

80th of Autumn, 518 AV. Afternoon.

To the esteemed members of the Dawn Tower,

My name is Savis Maren and I am a Nuit mage allowed to stay in the city by the Constellations. In my research, I've come across a discipline that's capable of reinforcing the protection that Glyphing creates. I am a practitioner of Animation among other disciplines, and find that deeper pursuit in this discipline might create instability and problems without taking the proper measures needed.

Upon further investigation, I've learned that Shielding is a discipline taught in the Dawn Tower. I'd quite like to study the discipline independently until the day comes that I'm allowed to study under the esteemed practitioners of your Tower. Would it be acceptable for me to gain access to your Tower's section of the Bharani Library? The research and study of Shielding is, in my opinion, essential to the advancement of my other studies, including Glyphing, as having access to personal magic would allow me to dig deeper into my understanding of how Glyphing can interact with the magicks as a whole.

It's my ambition to advance within Lhavit as a mage, and possibly come to earn the position of an instructor. I hope this letter reaches the Dawn Tower safely and that your consideration results in good news.

Your ally,

Savis Maren.

The Nuit completed her letter with a flourish, packaging it in a thin envelope before she moved forward. She advanced directly to Dawn Tower, advancing up the Tenten Peak before entering a lavish tower which prickled at the Nuit's senses with each step she took inside of it. The Aurist felt a connection wax within her, for djed was heavy in the air. The Nuit couldn't see any anomalies, but allowed herself to manifest her djed. She willed it to rise into her gaze, silver orbs suffused with djed as the Sight flickered to life. Within the Dawn Tower, djed was everywhere. It clung to the structures, waxing and waning as if breath was suffused into the very essence of the place. Savis felt a tinge, such a powerful aura laden with the personal djed of many mages creating a sensation of pain that was utterly foreign to her. Savis allowed the Sight to wither away, and a sensation settled on her tongue, as well.

Is the djed so strong here that Auristics is picking up on it even without actively manipulating the Sight? How incredible, she mused as she made her way to the reception desk and encountered a beautiful, white-haired young man. Artin Seder looked at Savis Maren with a cold, indecipherable expression, sizing her up before he spotted the letter neatly folded and stored in Savis' left hand.

"A request, hm? Give me that," he said, snapping his fingers irritably. Savis held her tongue, and instead obeyed the instruction and extending the letter to Artin. Once he took it, he opened the letter, which Savis purposely left unsealed. Ripping open envelopes that contained letters meant to be read at least twice seemed rather... unnecessary.

"Access to our section of the library? An Animator, hm? How come I've never heard of you..." he began, looking down at the letter before looking back up to the Nuit. "Savis, hm?"

"I keep to myself. I've come across references to protective magic in my studies of Glyphing and heard from the rumour mill that the Dawn Tower knows quite a lot about it," she said, her silver eyes meeting Artin's. The young man seemed to want to frighten her, but Savis Maren wasn't so weak-willed as to shake in her boots at the tongue of a boy, hardly even a man.

"Ah, I see. Well, best be on your way. We'll contact you in a day or so."

The Nuit nodded, leaving her information with Artin so that the Tower's answer would reach its proper destination. Satisfied with her effort, Savis made her way home. She had other matters to concern herself with in the mean time, such as orchestrating the repairs of her ruined automaton, Sil.

The days after Savis' application for access to the restricted Dawn Tower section of the library were slow. The Nuit was confident that her letter would be accepted, after all, the request she submitted was very reasonable, indeed. However, that assurance didn't help her anticipation, nor did it assuage the doubt that she'd receive a response in a timely manner. That white-haired boy was rude and forthcoming with his disdain, and Savis Maren was very glad to not need to return to the place in order for her acceptance to be known. Indeed, the Nuit occupied her time with a bit of eager practice. Savis Maren allowed herself to tap into the pool of djed that waxed within the depths of her soul. She tugged at the djed, pulling it from her chest and up along her spine before transmitting it in distinct directions through her arms. The Nuit imagined her djed as a wedge, carefully positioning it at the connection of astral limbs with physical limbs. She sought to separate her four hands from one another, allowing her wrists to fall limp s the astral limb remained in place. Savis forged the connection between her will and her astral hands before continuing on with her efforts.

The Nuit willed her hands forward until they caught grip of the automatons, Sil and the Voice Box, grasping the smallest of her automata firmly before lifting them up. Sil she held up by its tiny head, while she gripped at the Voice Box and allowed her fingertips to traverse the smooth surface of the cube. Then, she flicked her astral wrist, letting her hands fall before flicking them upwards towards the sky. The motion released both the Voice Box and Sil, and the Nuit cupped her hands. The Voice Box fell directly back into her palm, while the ruined and destroyed Sil fell towards the ground. The Nuit willed her limb to give chase, but failed to catch the automaton before it crashed into the floor with a thud. Savis pursed her lips, picking Sil up before placing both automata back into her satchel. With her manipulation complete, she willed the astral limbs to return to their place, carefully stitching together the connection between astral and physical. The Nuit hardly heard the sound of a fist smashing into the door until it grew so forceful and loud that the door shook on its hinges. Savis rose to her feet, narrowed gaze filled with fire as she opened the door.

"Yes? Need you try to batter down the door?!" she asked, finding her gaze landing on a small, mousy woman with a large backpack strapped to her shoulders. She seemed in a rush, and her eyes darted from side to side before throwing forth her hand that contained a sealed envelope in it. She didn't speak, and instead lingered there silently as Savis Maren took the letter from her hand. Immediately, the woman raced off at a runner's pace. The Nuit ignored the quick retreat, quite used to people wanting to be away from her. However, in this case, it simply seemed like the mouse-woman was simply very, very busy. The Nuit let a long, claw-like fingernail tear through the envelope's seal and began to read. The normally unexpressive Savis Maren's silver eyes were wide with delight.

Savis,

Your request for access into the Dawn Tower section of Bharani Library is accepted. Please submit a payment of five kina to the library and keep tidy while you are utilizing our space. You have five days starting tomorrow the 83rd of access. Additional access requires a second petition.

Sousa Dawn.

While the given name wasn't a name Savis recognized, the letter was proof enough to allow her access to the section of the Library she craved. The Nuit had approximately 12 hours before the place was accessible to her, but she figured she'd leave her home and go to the Library, instead. It never hurt to continue exactly what she was doing here over there, after all. The Nuit packed her things into Wheels before willing the automaton to life. She emerged from her home at the Solar Wind apartments and immediately made her way to the Bharani Library. The Nuit passed her time between books, her own and the library's as the bells chimed on and the night turned to morning.

Time couldn't possibly move slower as the evening crawled to a halt. Savis knew it to be well past midnight, and yet there was no attendant to guide her to the Dawn Tower's section. A bell passed with nothing to show for it, and another. It was well past three in the morning when at last, the administration desk in the Bharani Library held its attendant for the earliest hours of the morn. Savis approached immediately, showing the registrar the letter written by Sousa Dusk. In her hand there were also five kina, offered without asking. The letter made it very clear that there was a fee. The Nuit was happy to pay it, too. She spoke no longer, waiting until the regristrar placed the kina in the till before rising from her place. She led the undead to her destination, to a wing of the library that she'd never seen before. This section was far smaller than the large rooms that dominated the center of the place. It was cozier, even, and so early in the morn it was entirely empty. Savis, accustomed to experiencing at the very least, some people around her at any time of the day outside these halls... was alone.

How curious, she mused as she began to peruse the shelves. Unlike the main section that Savis visited far too often for her own good, the Dawn Tower kept only texts that spoke of their magicks. Sorted in alphabetical order, the shelves specifically related to the arcane were far smaller, but just as grand, as the rest. Books were sparse within it, taking a fraction of the total space of the shelves, but nonetheless, she marveled at the condition of the texts. But surely, she shouldn't be surprised? The undead looked along the spines of the texts, noting that nearly all of them were worn, but not by the environment. Clearly, these tomes never experienced environmental damage of any kind. The Nuit found it curious until she realized the probable cause.

These tomes are donated to the library by and for those allied with the Dawn Tower. So, it stands to reason that most of these texts were written by descendants of the family. Authors, teachers, practitioners... It's very clear why the three Towers were what they were. Powerful, influencial people held the reigns within Lhavit, the true grip of power seen by the undead. She was the city in a different light. Lhavit was ruled by children of Syna and Leth, but mages held the reigns behind them. As eyes feasted on the spines, she found the titles all varied, from historical significance and the means of performing it. The Principles of Shielding, Weaving: The How and Why, Ancient Shields and Where to See Them. On a different shelf, there were similar texts about a discipline called Reimancy. The Nuit picked up several tomes, intent on making effective use of the time she had in this place.

The Nuit approached the table, but found the comforts of a reading chair to be far more her speed. Wheels followed behind the Nuit, then when she at last sat down, it'd drift back and forth, keeping to its parameters while remaining in a constant state of motion. To remain balanced, she reasoned before she brushed aside those thoughts and focused herself fully on the moment. Savis Maren looked at the clean, pristine surface of the tome she'd taken before opening the tome. The spine shivered under her touch, and the Nuit wondered if perhaps she was one of the first to ever read it. New material was added into the place, written by the Dawn for posterity. The Nuit thought such things inane, offering (not quite freely) the knowledge of magic, but the hypocrisy of utilizing those resources was necessary all the same.

Forming Barriers: The Uses of Shielding.

The title appealed to Savis, a tome not so boring and uncreative as The Principles of Shielding, but with a title that clearly defined what it was. She turned to the preface and began to read the words of Sousa Dawn. The name was familiar, and she realized that the very same woman who accepted her application wrote the tome she was in the process of reading. The fact of it was fascinating, and Savis allowed a moment of wonder, a musing of just who is this woman before she reunited with the text and began to define this discipline at last.

As mortals learned to manipulate djed, it came quite naturally to the early mages that they could form djed into barriers. Those attuned to the movement and presence of djed began to wield it to their advantage, allowing it to well from their soul and serve them. Some learned to fling lightning, others learned to augment their battle power. Others still learned to build and protect, to pour djed into powerful barriers that protected them from the magic their peers formed. These mages, the Shielders, honed their craft, protecting themselves and their homes from harm. They learned to extrude pure djed, weave it into shape, and form barriers that could serve any number of purposes.

The Nuit read on, the passage detailing a very basic history of how after the cataclysmic Valterrian, it was Shielders that protected mankind from the toxins in the air, the pollution in water sources, from the threat of predators, and from worse still, other mortals that sought to strike them down. Shielding can protect against toxins? How intriguing, she mused before moving on to the next chapter of the tome. The whirling possibilities of what this ancient magic could accomplish had Savis floored. The sheer potential that the arcane had, from creating eternal, undead beings to forming barriers capable of warding against invisible forces.

Truthfully, she was in awe of the scale of it all.

While the history and uses for the discipline of Shielding were very interesting for Savis to learn, there was nothing that tempered her excitement for what followed. She did allot a page or so in her notebook to transcribe. Silver eyes began to drift along text, flickering between tome and her notebook before the charcoal pencil moving. This text was far more involved than the preface, and instead of replicating the text word for word, she paraphrased, abbreviating the text to its most useful and least expositioned words.

Shielding is the discipline of personal magic utilized by wizards to weave djed into three-dimensional barriers that exist to block the passage of djed into designated zones. While the process of creating these shields is unique to the user, there are qualities present to every Shielder. To form shields, a practitioner must learn to extrude djed. Extrusion is the art of projecting djed from one's soul into the physical world, then stretching it to cover surfaces such as doorways, flesh, and foreign objects. The process, as mentioned, is unique to each user, and indeed, the formation of shields while colloquially referred to as Weaving is a deeply personal process, subjective to one's innermost nature and personality.

Never before had Savis Maren encountered such a thing. While the premise of Shielding made perfect sense to the Nuit, never had she heard of something being so flexible. Was Shielding so intuitive that one could improvise its performance? Savis mused on the implications this had for personal magic as a while before she continued to explore the text. Sousa Dawn referred to weaving and the process of extruding djed before encouraging the reader to stop at this point and meditate deeply on what they'd read and learned. Being encouraged to do so at this juncture made sense to the undead, for the deeply intuitive nature of Shielding, based on Savis' reading, was far more involved. Unlike Projection and more akin to Auristics, Shielding did not require an initiation. Instead, the practitioner needed to understand how to formulate shields, the process of extruding djed and then shape their understanding of the discipline as they practiced it. Practical understanding if often the best kind. As they say, 'practice makes perfect', she reasoned before setting down the book. Savis ripped the next page from her notebook, folding it in half to mark her page before she set down the book and let everything fall by the wayside.

Savis Maren closed her eyes as she delved deep into the wellspring of her djed. The Nuit, versed already in personal magic, was very familiar with the intricacies of manipulating her personal djed. She willed it forth, pulling djed to the palms of her hands. The djed lingered there for a time, the Nuit allowing the text she'd just finished copying swell in her thoughts, the idea of extruding djed, creating it as a physical shape. She imagined her hands, but kept her eyes closed. The Nuit saw in her mind's eye a tangible surface materializing above her decaying flesh. A curious sensation of pleasure, rolling shivers that crept along her flesh set throughout before the sensations melded into one another. Savis opened her eyes, watching as ill-formed, flaky djed caked along the surface of her hands. Savis willed her consciousness to mat the djed, attempting to take the frayed energy and meld it together. The Nuit imagined her will as a metallic tool, scraping against the djed she manifested and bending it into shape. While the djed matted against the back of her hands, it remained frayed, combining poorly as she narrowed her eyes in distaste.

This is rather difficult...
she thought. Of course, personal magic wasn't easy by any stretch of the definition. Auristics had its challenges, and indeed, obstacles to overcome. Projection held dangers to it if performed poorly, and required a great deal of caution. Shielding, however, was difficult for different reasons. Shaping djed was something she'd never needed to do before. She wiggled her fingers, watching the djed ripple and shift with her movements before she ceased them altogether. The shields remained frayed, and rather than continuing to focus on the same plane of the Shield for too long, she sought to create more. The Nuit, after all, only covered several inches of the back of her hand. She wanted to expand, cover the entirety of her hands and figure out the rest.

Refining the technique can come later, she reasoned.

The Nuit mage watched as the gray flesh of her hand rippled and shimmered, the presence of djed undeniable but invisible to the naked eye. Perhaps, over time, she'd develop the ability to see it properly. Or, at the very least, to do so with Auristics while also being able to shape her shields. At the moment, however, Shielding was rough and unrefined. She'd just begun her path as a practitioner, and it required immense concentration for her to perform much of anything at all. The djed that permeated on the back of her hand rippled along her flesh and she utilized that sensation to her advantage. The Nuit willed djed to rise from the back of her hand, the ripples growing in scale, spreading along the surface of her hand and gaining traction. Gaps were present in the pattern, her weaving of djed flawed and jagged in nature. She attempted to imagine the manifestation as a curtain rising from her flesh, spreading like an infection along the surface. Bit by bit, the poorly formed djed connected, chimes passing in utter silence as she sought to shape the shield to form tight against her skin. The Nuit managed after nearly a bell of pure, focused effort, to extrude enough djed to cover the surface area of her hands.

The Nuit sensed the passage of djed, the materialization of it along the flesh of her hands and the rippling surface. The texture she saw reminded her greatly of water, shifting like the fluid along her skin. Was her shield gelatinous in nature? Savis reflected on what it could mean, or why it formed into that particular shape. She then reflected on the formation of it all, noting the frayed edges in the 'pools' of extruded djed on the surface of her skin. It seemed like frigid, unyielding djed marked the edges of those pieces, as if ice solidified in the midst of flowing water. Curious, she thought as she watched the Shield she'd created. It persisted and Savis Maren decided to do something to test the integrity of the thing she crafted. Savis Maren felt the vestiges of djed against the palm of her hands. The extruded djed was its own entity, and Savis need breach into her soul once again. She opened her eyes, silver orbs narrowing as she looked over her shield as she willed djed to travel through her arms and into her hands. At the wrists, right at the edge of where her shields ended, she lifted the astral body of her hands from the physical. Immediately as Savis lifted her astral limbs, she felt a measure of resistance.

The shield is restricting the movement of my astral body! she realized. The djed-rich astral entities struggled against the shields before the Nuit placed a bit more effort into the manipulation. Her astral fingers and knuckles knocked against the shields, slowly and steadily battering at the woven shields. The shields shattered as Savis' astral digits cleaved through and the djed dissipated into the air as the Nuit willed her astral hands to rise higher. Disappointment settled within the Nuit as she re-established the connection between the astral and the physical hands. The ripples were gone, absorbed by the environment as the Nuit reflected on exactly what transpired.

It seems that continuously testing the shields will wear it down. The astral limb, however, was held back for at least a moment before I broke through! That's encouraging, she thought, recounting the events that unfolded in her notebook with a quick analysis.

83rd of Autumn, 518.

Deep within the Bharani Library, in the Dawn Tower's section, I delved into Shielding and how to extrude djed into a physical object. While the process was rough and foreign to me, I managed to create a successful, but a weak shield. The woven djed strained against my astral limbs, surrendering to battery after just a few ticks of pressing. However, the success of this venture into Shielding is but the beginning. For now, I'll allow myself a break from extrusion and delve deeper into the subject material,
she decided before setting down her pencil and closing her notebook. Savis Maren immediately set the book aside, taking the bookmarked tome from the table adjacent to her. The Nuit leaned back into the chair before opening to the bookmarked page and continuing on. The Nuit didn't seek to write notes, instead plunging solely into the material.

I'll record my findings after, she mused.

The study of personal magic requires levity in order to be successful, Savis reasoned as she returned to her bookmarked page. The invokation of personal djed was intoxicating and if allowed to become unmanageable through fervor, presented a very real danger to the practitioner. The Nuit was cold by nature, collected, and though not immune to the pull of personal magic usage, she did her utmost to stop herself from pushing too far at any given time. Rather, she followed the next passage, allowing her djed to return to homeostasis in hopes of letting it replenish of its own accord. Savis, unlike mortals, did not have the luxury of replenishing her djed as a mortal might, through consumption. Rather, the fact that her body didn't utilize djed in its operation, she recovered at a brisker pace. Allowing herself to sink into the source material, the Nuit cast all thought aside and read.

Tasking shields is a key component of making them useful to the practitioner. As a wielder of Shielding magic creates their shield, it is given the primary task of warding against djed. This is an intrinsic quality about a Shield, but by no means is it the limit of the practice, but rather the very beginning. While new students to the discipline will find it difficult to form shields of any sort of consistency, they can begin the process of tasking them against simple concepts, such as light or sound. However, in order for tasking to be successful, a shielder needs to be able to properly layer their shield so that there are no gaping holes for such things to enter through. Consequently, the novice Shielder is best rewarded by practicing the concepts of extrusion and shaping their extruded djed on a surface, guiding it into a useful form.

Furthermore, in addition to blocking djed, a more experienced practitioner can expand upon this concept and, indeed, create shields capable of absorbing foreign djed. Such shields are able to utilize the absorbed djed to expand their otherwise limited lifespans. A shield, if unable to absorb djed from outside intervention, will without fail whittle away until they crumble apart entirely. On the other side of this concept, a shield that absorbs djed readily from its environment or is bombarded with djed that is weaker than its composition can replenish itself and last indefinitely insofar as it is not broken.

The Nuit read through the excerpt of text, processing it over and over again. The implications that the author was making were truly incredible to the undead, who found that her conceptualization of personal djed and what it was capable was truly flawed. The Nuit wasn't the most focused on personal magic, after all. Animation was her first and foremost focus, with the fruits of her labours wheeling back and forth just past the scope of her gaze. Indeed, it wasn't until Savis entered the safety of Lhavit that she felt her master of personal magic truly begin to transform. And here we are now, she mused, considering her knowledge of Auristics and Projection, which grew steadily as she explored their uses. Now, she was on the precipice of learning a third personal magic that she deemed complementary to her ambitions of being a powerful Animator.

Fascinating. This discipline, Shielding, is capable of creating barriers that can, in the proper environment, autonomously regenerate themselves? Or, a mage can fuel their creations manually? On top of this quality, Shielding can be used to ward off other things. The tome hasn't yet revealed exactly how that's done, but the author seems to be keeping material in line for the mastery of its practitioner. The table of contents says as much, she reasoned. The Nuit took a full bell to re-read the chapter before reaching for her notebook. There, she'd record her findings as a reminder to herself for posterity.

A Shielder is capable of extruding djed and shaping it as a three-dimensional object. This shape will rest against an existing object, surrounding it with a layer of djed tasked against the invasion of foreign djed. This layer of djed, the Shield, must be molded into proper shape and consistency in order to be useful, a task that proves difficult for those attempting to begin their understanding of the discipline. With proper effort put into the creation of shields, a practitioner will learn to form and tend to them in their own way, and task them against far more than just djed as their competence grows.

Satisfied with her synopsis, the Nuit clasped her hands together and believed herself ready for another shot at a practical application of the discipline. Rather than using my hands as the subject, I'll use the Voice Box, she reasoned, intent on pushing forth and broadening her understanding of extrusion.

83rd of Autumn, 518

Savis Maren was all too eager to continue forth with her understanding of Shielding. Already, she'd managed to extrude djed, a concept foreign to her upon entry into the sanctum of the Dawn Tower's tomes. The text was remarkably useful, revealing to her the principles of Shielding and the idea of extruding djed at all. Given the concept of it and told that Savis need produce her own djed and push it forth into the world, it was the matter of venturing forth with that knowledge. It was intuitive, she realized. Projection required an initiation, a process of that at times still haunted her memory, that changed the very soul and made it pliable to the manipulation of the astral body. Shielding was different. It wasn't hostile in any way, requiring no invasion of the body, but rather allowing the practitioner to imbibe their djed onto another object.

How different the many magicks are, she thought to herself as she placed her both of her hands on the Voice Box. The automaton wasn't 'on', and so she needn't worry about it speaking and distracting her even as the djed pressed to its surface. It'd create quite the problem to have the Voice Box suddenly spew gibberish at her. She resolved herself before steeping into the wellspring that was her soul. Eyes fell shut as she began to pull the djed, guiding it forth to seep into her arms. She felt the faint warmth of the djed at the palm of her hands, a vestige of sensation as she began to pour it forth from her body. Savis Maren narrowed her focus solely onto the Voice Box, her attention dedicated solely to the object in her grasp as a thin, aqueous formation of djed manifested. It fell over the surface of the Voice Box, running down the surface is haphazard lines, much like the path of water on a surface exposed to heavy windfall.

The djed was runny and thin, flaking against the automaton as the Nuit willed it forth. She sought for more and more djed to paint over the automaton, droplets of manifested djed pooling together, little by littlegrowing thicker as it adhered to its place. Savis Maren was reminded of how water coalesced and stayed still on a plane surface. Surface tension, she mused as the droplets of djed continued to flow and gather together. It took several chimes of dedicated effort for the Nuit to create more, and even when a 'puddle' of a Shield adhered to the surface, it scarcely spilled over the sides. Savis needed to create more to encompass the surface, and tapped into her djed again, willing it forth. Savis did this overv and over again, in bursts that reminded her of a faucet whose plumbing was congested. Watery djed flowed very slowly from the palm of her hands, but after nearly twenty bells, the three surfaces of the Voice Box that were exposed were painted in a silvery-white layer of viscous, rippling energy. The previous shield I made needed to form over my hands and change shape. This only needs to be firm to five flat planes. But, it also needs to be woven onto that surface. With my hands, I can extrude djed from the pores and have them meld together that way.

Savis Maren felt the challenges Shielding presented to her and sought to overcome. The Nuit spent a bell 'weaving' the djed, willing it to solidify on the sides of the Voice Box. She allowed the djed to waxe and wane, grateful to divert her focus from creating djed and fully to applying shape to it. She found this process easier for her to understand, as Savis Maren manipulated djed in every form of magic she practiced. It was never natural to do so, but at the very least, she held a command over the willpower to do so.

Creation and manipulation are very different things, she understood. As Savis Maren shaped the djed around the planes of the Voice Box, she slowly felt it adhere properly to the surface. There were holes that formed on it, and the rippling surface seemed far too susceptible to movement... but Savis was patient. She'd allow herself to be satisfied with her progress, and decided it best to allow herself a reprieve from the study and manipulation of Shielding magic for the moment.

After all, levity is a necessary component to learning, she mused. She'd return to this work, butr for now, she'd take a walk around and see what else might interest her in the Dawn Tower's section of the library.
