The lush green popping up in and around Sunberth were somewhat contrasting to the anarchist city's dreary, foreboding environment, but for hunters like Sinna it was like an omen of good fortune. More greens, more life, more game. Without Morwen's icy touch, lands didn't freeze over and the wildlife were more active, albeit a little confused by the emergence of what felt more like an early spring. Yet, just in case the Winter goddess did decide to make an unlikely reappearance and for his own peace of mind, Sinna had made it a point to stock up as, and not when Winter approached. Usually, that left the first week of the season more open for him, and he'd allow himself a short break to spend more time around his admittedly neglected brother.

However, a recent debt to Baker had the mixed-blood out of the house before Syna rose to reign once more that day, dark oak hair held back in a tight braid and carrying no more than an empty sack and his bow and quiver. Sin didn't owe the man too much, in fact merely a favour to repay, but he absolutely abhorred the idea of another having any sort of hold over him. Debts in a community like Sunberth's were never a good thing, in his opinion. The earlier they were cleared, the better. And with that very mindset, Sin pegged himself a large wild boar. Bound to sell for a hefty sum of gold mizas, but the lucky bastard Baker had the privilege of first pickings. At the very least, there was some comfort to be found in knowing that it hadn't been a stag he had managed to track down instead. There had been a set of hoove marks in the mud trailing a distance away, not too far from the boar's, but the man had forgone a bigger prey in favour of the one that had presented itself right before him. Switching targets might have lost him only more time and a guaranteed successful hunt.

Headed back for civilisation with the sack of Wild boar in tow, Sinna decided against walking further ahead before taking a small ferry to cross the river that dissected Sunberth. A boat ride from the start would be much faster, and save him the effort of having to lug the prize all the way across, he convinced himself, but in truth the hunter found a rather childish joy in stepping aboard a floating vessel. He recalled, at some point in his short-lived childhood, that he would fantasize about commandeering a vessel of his own and sailing for the rest of the world aboard it. Free to travel, free of burdens and responsibilities. A silly childhood fantasy he'd long abandoned.

Circling the riverside, Sin let his eyes wander over his options, piercing steel blues surveying the area in search of a suitable ferry. In the end, he settled on a cheap, rickety old thing that, despite repeated reassurances of its sturdiness, looked as if it might decide to sprout a leak or two mid-journey, which he had only been willing to even consider when the man who owned it offered a decent enough fee. Still, Sin lingered on land just a little longer, a single foot set liggtly atop the edge of the small boat while he eyed a fine Svefran Casinor two boats over.

Sensing his would-be passenger's hesitation and a potential business loss, the boatman quickly offered his own opinion. "What you oglin' at boy? That outsider's pile o' driftwood? Im tellin' you, a ride like that's going to cost more than what I'm giving ya'. She ain't worth yer mizas."

Way Down We Go

It was a beautiful morning, as far as mornings in Sunberth went, and Kailani was enjoying the gentle breeze rifling through the golden braids of her hair. Her hand rested atop the broad head of her brindle Akinva Deerstalker, Kona, fingers gently scratching at his ears. “Hard to believe it’s Winter, eh boy?” she said to him in Fratava with a soft chuckle. His tail wagged lightly in response, nuzzling against her side. “I reckon one of these days Morwen will show her face again. But hey, who am I to complain? Just means I don’t have to stay on land for the season.”

The Svefra went about preparing The Sunset Tide for the day’s fares, raising her sails and pulling up her anchor. Business had been steady all through Fall and didn’t seem to be slacking up into this season, either. Something for which she was grateful… last season’s wages would serve to fix up her casinor real nice in the coming weeks. She continued to have nothing but good reports from her employer and her fares alike, and was even hopeful for a raise soon. Perhaps it’s not all bad here, she reasoned, leaning over the side to knock a few barnacles from the hull.

Who would’ve thought a Svefra could make an honest living instead of ransacking the locals? she thought with a bemused smile, checking the security of her rigging and finding it to her satisfaction. Though I imagine it won’t be long until we’re doing that too… Well, not the locals perhaps. But rumors had been running around the Pearltide pod of an upcoming raid for weeks now. Kailani couldn’t deny the prospect excited her. How long has it been?

Preparations made, she settled herself against the starboard side of the ship, breathing in the briny air with a sigh of satisfaction. “Now we wait, Kona,” she informed her dog, tossing him a link of sausage from her pack—one which he happily (and greedily) devoured. “Sure it won’t be long, now.”

Nearly as soon as the words left her mouth, she caught the eye of an exotic-looking young man eyeing her ship from an old rickety rowboat. Grinning, she beckoned him over, indicating the much finer state of her own ship. “Come on, gorgeous, don’t listen to him!” she called out in accented Common, her own sea blues glittering with mirth as a laugh twinkled across the air. “I’ll even give you whatever he’s charging. I’ll get you there faster and you can rest assured knowing we won’t sink on the way.”

The old man grumbled in response, casting her a glare that could melt stone. Her response was a sweet, deceptively innocent smile, batting her eyelashes at him before tossing him a wink. She then turned her attention back to the unsure passenger. “Plus, I can guarantee you I’ll be much better company than this crazy old coot. Why take your chances with that one when you can have a Svefra ferry you around?” She was all charm as she added, “What do you say? Promise I won’t bite.”

Svefrans were plenty common in Sunberth, frequenting the anarchist city and bringing with them tales of adventures and a steady flow of trade and transportation, but Sin had always found their accents and unique language particularly interesting, though he'd never admit it out loud. Fratava was a fairly refreshing tongue compared to the local, drab common tongue.

The blonde seafarer aboard the vessel met his gaze with her own ocean eyes and waved him over, flashing a set of pearly whites his way. Resisting the urge to cringe at her nickname for him, the hunter took his lone foot off the intended ferry, a sigh and laugh escaping him simultaneously in a single, quiet huff. The other party scrambled, stretching an arm toned by hard labour out in a failed attempt to block the hunter's path. "Boy, wait, ya' can't be serious, I've mouths ta' feed, come on." The man bemoaned, stepping forward to grab ahold of the load in Sin's grasp only to have it wrenched harshly from his grip. "What a coincidence. So do I." He returned callously with a slight shrug of his shoulders, and promptly left for the Casinor instead, eager to set food aboard. A sleeker, faster boat for the same rate - he'd be a fool not to choose the option more worthy of his gold. "I'm sure you won't," the brunet called over in answer, brow quirking in mild and somewhat confused amusement at her gimmicks, "But your mu... hound," he corrected himself somewhat reluctantly, raising the sack and giving it a little shake to draw her attention to his baggage, "had better not."

Sinna would never admit it either, but of all the animals that roamed the lands of Mizahar, he had always been the least fond of dogs.

"Turnin' ya back on a brotha' for a petchin' skank like 'er? And all she had ta' do was bat her eyes. Don't come cryin' when ya fall down a mine shaft." Bit back the man with a bitter tone. The brunet, however, could care less. If anything, the vessel proved to be of more interest to him than the pretty Svefran lady sailing it.

Nodding both his greeting and agreement towards his new ferry-woman, Sinna lugged the sack over, eventually deciding to carry it with both hands as he boarded the vessel, eyeing her furry companion somewhat warily as it feasted on a link of sausages. A hunting dog, fine like the ship his owner sailed, and one the man hoped had been trained just as well to resist the temptation of fresh wild boar.

Producing his fee of a few coppers and lint from the pockets of his jacket, he held them out in place of a greeting, sack tucked and held in a firm grip under one arm well above the Deerstalker's reach. "To Butcher's Bakery. You do know the way, right?"

A wicked grin tugged at Kailani’s lips as she looked over at her competitor, her eyes glittering with triumph. It was all she could not to stick out her tongue. What man in his right mind wouldn’t choose her ship over such a rickety little rowboat, especially with the perks she offered? Glowing with her victory, she then turned her attention back to her passenger as he started closing the distance between the two boats. “Excellent choice,” she commended with him with a laugh. She offered the other ferryman a rude gesture of her hand at his retorts before pointedly ignoring him.

At the other’s snide remark on her dog, she pursed her lips and glanced down at the animal’s scarred head. “He won’t bite unless you deserve it.” She looked back at the man with a raised eyebrow, her expression neutral. The sailor let the threat linger behind her words even if she didn’t voice it aloud. Let him take it as he would.

“Welcome aboard the Sunset Tide,” she told him pleasantly enough as he approached, Kona eyeing the stranger at her side. When he stepped on the deck, she accepted his coppers with a nod before tucking them into the pouch at her waist. “Kailani Pearltide, at your service.” Resting a hand atop her dog’s head, she added, “And Kona.”

Kona looked a little more interested in the newcomer than he should be, eyeing the bag tucked under the man’s arm. His nose quested in the direction of the sack, jaws parting as drool started to gather along their edges. “Leave be, boy,” she told the dog firmly in her mother tongue, giving him a stern eye. “He didn’t bring that for you.” The canine looked up with her eyes full of defiance, taking a step forward as if testing his boundaries. “What did I just say?!” Snapping her fingers, she pointed toward the rear of the ship and cleared her throat. Hesitating for a few ticks, he finally sighed before sending what looked like a glare in her direction and stalking off. One last glance was spared in the direction of the man’s enticing parcel before he laid down with a huff. Rolling her eyes, Kailani snorted. So dramatic.

Unmooring her lines from the dock, she started preparing to push off. The sails were unfurled, each rope carefully pulled to ensure it was holding securely. At her passenger’s question, her eyes flickered in his direction, her tone dry as she replied, “Aye. I know where it is. I’m not exactly new to Sunberth, even if I’m not from here.”

It was an attitude she was used to, though it still irked her. What sort of sailor would she be without a sense of direction? And she made her actual living on getting others from place to place. How could she not know how to get to the butcher’s shop? She fought the urge to roll her eyes as she started hauling up her anchor, carefully winding the chain onto the deck. On land, we’re always the outsiders, she thought with a touch of resentment, walking over to adjust her tiller to catch the wind once the anchor was over the side. They know we don’t belong as surely as we do.

A light gust of wind pulled the canvas fabric of the sails, and they were off, Kailani moving back to the helm to take hold of the wheel. That same breeze playfully caught up the errant strands of her hair, tousling them in her face. Wrinkling her nose, she pushed them out of the way of her vision before glancing back at her russet-haired passenger. She indicated the parcel he held. “My dog seemed fair interested in your bag there. Meat to sell, I’m guessing?” she inquired before turning her gaze back ahead of them and smoothly maneuvering the ship against the gentle current. “Did you kill it yourself?” In her tone, there was a deceptive innocence sloppily concealing a touch of the same archness he’d had in his own question, the prideful Svefra showing she could give just as good as she got. Kai bit her lip before her smile could give her away, lifting her hand in greeting to a smaller boat that passed them.

Her commendment of the hunter was met with an indifferent grunt. Of course it was a good choice - it was his choice. A small smirk teased at his lips at the silly grin of triumph that lit the impish Svefran's features, and the vulgar gesture that followed. Children of the sea indeed.

"Right. Somehow, I doubt the extent of his training," He snickered, having noticed the way her scarred, furry companion perked up at the scent and sight of his baggage. It looked as if he'd bite either way when presented with something of interest. The silent threat that underlayed her words were clear as day, but it was neither new nor surprising for the Sunberthian hunter. If anything, it was familiar. Almost, somewhat, comforting. "Sinna, at your mercy," he spoke dryly, and with a face so straight that one might almost miss his humour. As soon as the words left his lips, he followed Kailani's gaze towards her Deerstalker and observed their exchange in questioning silence, noting to himself that there was some similarity to be found in his own interactions with his brother. Who needed a dog when they had a puppy for a sibling? He bit back a laugh at the thought. He stepped forward between the bag and the animal just to make the message clearer, eyeing it with intent of his own until he was sure it wasn't going to act. A careless shrug of his shoulders was the only sign of acknowledgement of Kailani's dry affirmation of her street lore.

"Fresh from the wilds," he confirmed, plonking himself somewhere where he wouldn't get in her way as she worked whilst he admired the craft of her ship. The wind that puffed out the fabric of its sails, that blew through and caressed at the gold and brown of both their hair. And as always, the ache that he constantly carried caught up with him, making its way up his legs and to the rest of him once more as soon as he so much as sat down, re-emerging as a quiet, heavy sigh. The Sunset Tide seemed to provide more than just a quick means of travel.

"Did you kill it yourself?" He snorted. "Obviously. No, it just fell out of the sky in a shiny gold crate, perhaps Morwen's way of apologising for her extended vacation-" When the question was further processed and broken down within the safety of his mind, he paused.

The innocence with which she asked, though a pitiful excuse for a camouflage of her true intentions, caught him off-guard nontheless. Sinna had expected to be riding with some sort of pushover, but he supposed he should have known better with the signs displayed earlier. While it might've been an insult coming from someone else, he reckoned he deserved it, anyhow. And perhaps, the added combination of a successful hunt and being aboard such a fine ship had sweetened his otherwise usual sour, stoic demeanour. Taking it as it was, he laughed, appalled and impressed by the woman as wild and untempered as the sea. "I like you," he smiled, and it softened his features greatly.

At the very least, Kailani seemed a straightforward enough individual, and Sinna had always appreciated that in a person.

“Pushover” was about the last word anyone could use to describe the spirited Svefra. Stubborn, incorrigible, foul-tempered, headstrong, ornery… The list could go on of proper descriptors, but “pushover” had never been one of them. Kailani laughed merrily as he realized her heavy-handed insult, and shook her crown of golden braids. It was no less than he deserved.

I like you.

“Most do,” she answered with yet another laugh, casting back a teasing look in his direction. “It remains to be seen if I feel the same about you, Sinna.” Even with her words, her smile deepened in response to his, a dimple forming in the middle of her cheek. “But it’s a start.”

She looked at him thoughtfully as they continued their trek down the river, walking over to allow some slack in her lines and adjusting the tiller to slow their progress. If they kept up too quick of a pace, they’d pass right by the Castle Commons and end up having to turn back around. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d misjudged her progress and had to double back, having been far more used to the fast pace of sea travel than the leisurely meandering of the river. However, she was getting much better at navigating the forked passageway, and it showed.

“Do you mind if I go into the butcher’s shop with you?” the Svefra asked as she took her place back at the helm, gently steering her ship through the fork in the river. “Getting a bit low on meat, and that one over there,” here she thrust her chin in the direction of her sullen dog, “eats enough for three grown men, I swear.” Kona sighed and resettled himself in response, pointedly ignoring them both. She rolled her eyes. “I can take you back wherever you need to go. Unless you plan on swimming.”

Another grin was flashed in his direction before they pulled up alongside the crumbled remnants of an old brewery, Kailani moving to lower the sails. Slowly and carefully, the ship pulled up on the muddy shore, the sailor tossing her anchor over the side of the hull to hold them in place while they were gone. Kai tugged the rope to check its security before nodding in satisfaction. It would do for a short trip on land.

“Well, here we are,” she announced, whistling for Kona to come join her. Sighing and stretching, he plodded over and sat at her feet after throwing a disdainful look in Sinna’s direction. “Well, as close as we can get anyway. The shop doesn’t border the river, and I haven’t quite figured out how to take The Sunset Tide over land.”

Kailani gestured for Sinna to precede her before hopping off the ship herself, Kona’s powerful legs carrying him down not long after. Once her feet touched dry land, the Svefra wavered, never fully losing her sea legs any time she came ashore. Stable surfaces always seemed to be vaguely moving, and now was no exception. As she was gaining her bearings, a sound to her left gave her pause, Kona’s growl following not long after. Her hand went to the dagger at her waist as she spun to face whatever came forward, and the sight that met her eyes made her stomach drop.

Two large men, both armed with nasty looking knives, were heading in their direction, grinning in spite of the snarling dog pressed against her legs. “Shyke,” she muttered under her breath as she drew her own dagger, drawing herself up and glaring at them. “We don’t want any trouble,” she told them firmly, flashing the steel in her hand as she glanced between the two. “My dog has a taste for blood, I’d suggest you move along.”

Hearty guffaws were her response, the larger of the two twirling his knife around his finger. “How ‘bout ye hand us yer purses, and we won’t give ye none?”

Somehow, the sailor doubted that very strongly, the lascivious look on the other’s face making it rather clear what they thought of her. Bile rose in Kailani’s throat. “Not gonna happen,” she said firmly, glancing back to see whether or not Sinna had run off. She wasn’t sure she and Kona could handle these thugs alone.

“Kinda hoped ye might say that,” the one who’d spoken before responded, the pair rushing them while the Deerstalker leaped into action.
