10th Summer 519

Finn approached the jungle clearing that surrounded the sawmill carefully as he watched for the Ashta that often grazed around in the area. He wore long pants, high leather boots, and a long sleeve shirt with his leather gloves tucked into his belt but his cutlass hung on his hip as was his custom anytime he neared the jungle in any fashion let alone entering it like he might be later today. The mill sounded like it was running and he could see Lars and a lady that he didn’t recognize, he wondered if the small dark haired lady was helping Lars or maybe just new to Syka. Not wanting to bother Lars, he looked around at the small pile of pier pilings which he knew he needed for his own work on the pier he planned on building more in the middle of Syka this summer.

He wished he had brought his pack and waterskin but the trip hadn’t actually been planned at all but more forced onto him and he didn’t like that at all but he knew it was needed as well. Earlier in the day he had looked around the area and had wandered into the Isuas Grove just to get more familiar with the jungle in what he thought might be a safer area but Tony had found him shortly after he had arrived and hadn’t seemed happy about him walking and messing around in the grove. Tony had been politely enough asked him to leave the grove alone and not mess with it but he could tell that the man was quite attached to his work and wouldn’t tolerate much interference from him but the offer to meet at the sawmill to teach him about the jungle seemed sincere enough that Finn would wait and see.

As Tony escorted him out of the grove he had pointed out several different types of palm trees and he looked for them around the sawmill now. He could see several of the bottle palms which appeared to be all over Syka and what he had always considered a palm tree. He could see a chistmas palm or two up in front of him as they were quite easy to pick out with the green and red berries that dangled down the trunk, the birds seemed to enjoy these berries too. Not sure if missed the royal palms and the traveller palms that he had mentioned or if they just were not around the sawmill but he scanned the area as he walked closer to the mill and the piled lumber.

As he looked at the piles of cut wood around him he realized he really had no idea of what or how much wood he needed or even what kinds so he turned round and sat down on the pile to wait quietly. He pulled up his legs to sit cross legged on top of the pile so he had a good vantage view of Lars milling the logs inside the mill and possibly the new lady in Syka while he waited on Tony’s arrival.

Ines was wearing her usual work clothing - tall leather boots, an oversized sisal tunic, and a large hat to keep off the full brunt of the sun. Ashta were large creatures, and large creatures made large messes, and she preferred to have lower-quality clothing on while doing dirty work. Indeed, she had spent much of the day up to this point scooping up Ashta dung and loading it into a cart for Tony. She intended to bring it to him today, but she wanted to wait for a few bells and get the cart as full as the Ashta could comfortably carry.

The kelvic generally wore leather gloves while using the rakes and pitchforks, but she had taken them off now since the cart was nearly full and she was taking a break. The bungalow provided excellent shade and was open-air, allowing the cool sea breeze to cool off the sweaty bat. She looked around the bungalow for where Lars kept his stores of pork jerky. It was as soon as she found it that she looked up and noticed a lost-looking man sitting on some logs, seemingly waiting for someone to notice him. He must have been considerably shy if he had just been sitting in the sun instead of coming into the bungalow that, for all intents and purposes, was open to anyone who came by.

She set the small cloth pouch holding the jerky on the table next to the multiple, full waterskins they kept handy. He was just sitting on a pile of logs that were of a common, but popular wood that the millwright kept around for those that needed it now. Pre-cutting extra wood was a practice that the witch kept a hard eye on, considering the slippery slope it was from collecting what you needed to damaging the delicate ecosystem. The man using the hewn logs as a chair, however, had little to do with it. She approached him, a bit of concern mixed with polite hospitality written on her face.

"Do you need something?" She held out her hand. "I am Ines. If you need any lumber, I can take you to see Lars. If you just want to watch, you can come to the bungalow with me. I have jerky and water." At this, the kelvic's own stomach growled. "Or you can come to hang out with the ashta, a few of them are soaking right now," She gestured to the elephants splashing in their nearby pool.

"The wood you're sitting on...I think it is called walnut." The little bat said this more for her benefit than the visitor's. Since working at the sawmill, she had attempted to learn more about its offerings and the names of the woods locally. Many of the colors had seemed too similar to be easily identifiable, but every time she mentioned that, Lars had told her some rule of thumb or thing to look for in the grain to tell them apart. It was still hard to keep track. Ines found it much easier when she could simply ask the tree what it was, but dead trees couldn't talk back.

"I am Ines. What is your name? Come, I am hungry. We can talk in the shade."

Finn enjoyed Syna’s warmth as he relaxed quietly on the pile of logs while he watched the woman’s approach from the nearby bungalow, she looked considerably shorter than him and appeared young under her large hat. She quickly and directly walked up to him although she didn’t appear unfriendly at all.

He took the lady’s hand as she offered it and introduced herself with an air of authority as she spoke. Ines was her name and she seemed to work with or for Lars but he wasn’t sure which, he hadn’t heard of anyone beside Lars at the mill not that it mattered anyway.

Finn opened his mouth to introduce himself but was interrupted by the growl from the woman’s empty stomach and Ines continued speaking. Although she offered the ashta might provide a show and on most days he may of taken that offer, it only took him a tick to decide that the polite offer of a conversation over some jerky might be a pleasant way to get to know the woman a little and pass the time as he waited.

He swung his legs off the wood pile and gently hopped down himself as Ines called the type of wood walnut. He noticed the grain and color of the lumber as he ran his hand over it, not sure if that might be something useful or not before he realized she had turned and started towards the bungalow as she directed him to do the same

He grinned as he hurried to catch up with her, with a fleeting thought in the back of his mind as he wondered if he had somehow trespassed onto her property. His long strides quickly brought her next to him as he walked on her right the short way to the bungalow, “I’m Finn, pleased to meet you, Ines. I didn’t mean to intrude on your work but I hadn’t heard anyone else worked out here with Lars.”.

The shade of the bungalow instantly cooled him as he entered it and sat down on one side of the table. “I’ve a casinor that is moored down in the bay, been doing some fishing for Syka myself.” He told her casually as he sat down at the table, he slid the bag of jerky towards the other side of the table as he grabbed one of the waterskins for himself and answered her questions of him. “Feel free to wade out anytime though, I will need lumber for my dock eventually but haven’t started yet, once that is done I can dock on it.”

“The gardener told me to meet him up here, he is supposed to teach me some things on surviving in the jungle but I think he was trying to keep me away from his trees. You should come along with us, might save me another lecture from him.” he smiled widely as he confided in her “That is if you have time, I know I find the closeness of the forest so overwhelming compared to the openness of the sea.”

He paused as he poured himself a long draught from the waterskin, the water was warm but fresh and it quenched his thirst quickly enough before he set the skin back onto the table. “Where are you from Ines? Do you just work with the ashta or are you working with the mill as well?” he asked politely as he attempted talk more and not ask a lot of questions to allow the woman time to eat if she wanted.

"Fin. Like...fish?" Ines inquired about his name. He was blonde and blue-eyed like the other Svefra in the settlement. His next words confirmed her suspicions that he was like the other ones. Myrians had boats and fished the basin, but they were nothing like the ones she saw in the waters off of Syka. Her experience with Svefra was limited to nothing, and she had only learned that they considered them distinct from other humans, with their own name and everything, after moving to the settlement.

"Casinor? What is that?" She asked. With context, she gathered it was some type of boat. She had never needed to know the names of boats before, but it was likely to come in handy with increased contact. In her head, she just referred to them as big or little boats. Their sails were especially intriguing - large flaps of cloth that harnessed Zulrav's power to go much more quickly than the use of oars on the basin. "I have not waded before."

The bat chewed her own jerky thoughtfully as he regaled his experience with Tony. The textiles-man had never seemed unkind to her, but perhaps he didn't like Svefra. Maybe they had poor manners in his plants. He never rushed her away from his grove, nor did he lecture her. Ines found herself a bit prejudiced of the sea-farers, too. She could not imagine living on something constantly moving and in a place where one could see forever into the horizon. Such an experience must be unhealthy.

"I am from the jungle. Where you feel overwhelmed and closed in, I feel comfortable. I have never been out to sea. I can not imagine seeing so far into the horizon and on all sides." The jerky was a strange combination of moist and dry, and she took a sip to wash it down.

"I work with the ashta. I think they have adopted me as a new calf." She giggled. "I am learning some of the mill, but it is easier for me to work with just the animals." On cue, another calf ambled into the open bungalow and held Ines's red bandana with the grasping end of his trunk. The witch pet the creature on the head and thanked him in silence with Nura. The calf trumpeted happily, a near-deafening sound for the bat, and wandered off again.

"He took this from me 3 bells ago," The bat held up the bandana, now splotched with mud and in dire need of a wash, and laughed. "He looked so happy when he waved it around I could not bear to take it back."

Past Finn and towards the edge of the Sawmill clearing, Ines could see Tony. If he was already upset with Finn for wandering around in his grove, it would help if he were ready to learn.

"Come, Fin-like-a-fish, I see Tony." She tied the muddy bandana around her neck and walked out to the waiting gardener. Tony's eyes had wandered towards the bungalow before either of them left. He looked happy to see the woman who delivered his manure but unsurprised.

"Fin-like-a-fish told me that you are teaching him about plants. I am coming. I can finish my work when I am back." Ines didn't bother going to tell Lars that she was leaving. Even after six days, the millwright was used to her disappearing mid-day on occasion and returning later.

"Maybe you can teach him some manners while you're with us," Tony replied, playfully gesturing at Finn. The bat nodded. She wouldn't say he was truly spineless, but he did seem less than willful. A few more chimes went by of conversation until Tony began leading them a bit further into the jungle.

"In a relatively small area - only 4 square miles - there are thousands of different trees, flowers, and other plants. It's rare that you would come across the same plants close to each other." Tony gestured to the innumerable trees and flowers surrounding them at that very moment. They had only walked for a chime, and the mill was no longer visible. Ines rarely ever thought about the plants that surrounded them - despite being marked by Caiyha, she had much to learn about her domain.

Finn smiled inwardly as Ines put his name together with the fish anatomy as so many people did but almost no one outside of his pod knew the full story behind it as he so rarely told anyone about it but acknowledged her assumption as true with a nod of the head.

“My casinor is my ship and my home, I can sail wherever and whenever I want as long as I have it near.” he answered the woman quickly as he wondered on the fact that she had never waded in the water, any water before but dismissed it fairly quickly as a misunderstanding or possibly being a Svefra clouded his own view on the matter.

As she confirmed her origins, it quickly explained much about the woman and although he had met only a few myrians before he couldn’t say any were quite like her. He mused on how uniquely opposite they were from one another simply from where they were brought up and likely the experiences they had from it, whether that be good or bad he couldn’t say but he did find it rather interesting to say the least.

Ines’s giggle provoked a smile from the svefra as she discussed the ashta she had befriended so easily. The way she acted with and around the large creatures reminded him more of his people and the creatures at sea than anything he had seen before on land not that he could explain it either. The loudness of the trumpetting calf astonished him, although he had heard them many times before but never quite so near as it seemed many times louder than anything he could remember on the ocean. “I think I am a little jealous of your friendship and how at ease you are with them!” he told her as he wondered if anyone with that kind of familiarity with the creatures be all that bad?

He followed the woman’s gaze behind him to find Tony had arrived just as she stated the fact, he stood to follow her as she tied the bandana around her neck in the process he thought he noticed a slightly different ear from what he would have expected. It was only for an instant so he couldn’t be sure but it was another thing that made him quite curious as he thought he saw fangs when she laughed shortly ago too but he had begun to realize that many of the things that he thought he saw this summer was only visions and weren’t actually there. He had begun to doubt his own eyes over the past week or two unfortunately.

The young Svefra snorted as the gardner poked fun at him, but responded with a friendly grin “I wouldn’t get your hopes too high about your success on that!”. The trio talked for a short time as they entered the nearby jungle. The jungle slowly crept in and around him as they walked further into it, it gave him an uneasy feeling not being able to see further ahead than a meter or two and the feeling deepened as the wind proceeded to be blocked by the foliage. The air quickly felt stagnant and the heat became more oppressive as Tony continued on about the different kinds of trees in the area and how often he could expect to find them. He tried hard to focus on Tony’s speech and not the enthusiasm or uneasiness that he felt as he was slightly intimidated by the surroundings but even more in awe of the greenery so beautifully all around him.

Tony stopped his talk and moved a large frond to the side as he reached up to deftly grab a dull green frog off one of the trees he had been talking up. “The jungle is home of many frogs, hundreds or maybe even thousands of different kinds of frogs like this tree frog.” he handed the little creature to Finn, he cupped Finn’s hands so he could properly hold the frog as he continued his talk. “You also have to be careful with the frogs though as many of them are quite safe but the brighter colored ones can be quite poisonous!”

He turned to the side as he held the frog in his cupped hands out to Ines as he offered the creature to her if she wanted to hold it. “So is it just the tree frogs that are safe or any of the duller colored ones?”

“The greens and brown frogs are ‘usually’ safe.” Tony answered before he turned and slowly started down the overgrown trail again as he continued on.
