[The Hunter's Guild]A Trail Traveled

55 Fall 520

It had been a bit since Kyra had made the recommendation, but Moritz found it was still in the back of his mind. Learning to hunt and track, for some reasons he was opposed an for others he was interested. But it had been long enough without being addressed, and he had some free time, so it made sense to make his way to The Hunter's Guild. And so he had grabbed Naymon, put on her collar and leash, and headed out on the trip to the guild.

Heading two peaks over from his home to Sartu, Moritz made his way to the Guild. As usual he had a general idea for where the place was, having to search around a bit once he got closer. Luckily when he got close, or unlucky depending on how one looked at things, he was able to follow his nose when he got close. The tinge of blood on the air was thick, blood and death, and as he searched about for the source of the smell he saw a pair of men with a deer slung between them. The animal was clearly dead, which was somewhat offputting to Moritz. But it was simple enough to follow this pair and see where they went. When they took their kill into a multi storied building he was fairly certain he had found the place. It did not look like a restaurant, more like a tavern or some such place, and he could not think of any other place that would be taking a full deer to be processed.

Following after the two men he found himself walking through a pair of large double doors into a large room at the ground floor of the structure. Right away Mortiz noticed two things about the room. A large stone fireplace which seemed to be the centerpiece of the room. And the odd facet of the fireplace, a series of animal heads ornamenting the fireplace.

While he saw many different animals there was of course no Okomo, the animal being considered sacred in Lhavit. He had not expected to see one, but by some impulse he had still checked to make sure.

Heading inside Moritz held the leash on Naymon, seeing the dog tug about occasionally as she smelled something she liked. Whereas Moritz was offput by the scent of blood on the air Naymon, a meat eater, seemed either unaffected or excited. Moritz was unsure which, but did his best to keep the dog in check and from running off.

Naymon for her part seemed to be having a good time, wagging her tail, barking at a few people, and sniffing at anything that came within range. As much leading as he was being led Moritz ended up making his way to the bar where he found a man seated and quaffing some kind of drink. Mortiz assumed it was alcohol but could not say for sure.

"Excuse me, my instructor sent me here to look for lessons on hunting and tracking. Do you know anyone for that here?"

At his word the man drinking finished off his glass before turning slowly to meet his gaze. Rather than flinching or being off put by his odd eyes the large bear of a man simply met his gaze, looking into and seemingly beyond his eyes into what was within. Moritz simply stared back unflinchingly, assuming the man would answer when he was done looking at whatever he was looking at.

After a moment a smile broke out on the mans face, leaving Moritz further confused. Naymon for her part went right up to the large man and began sniffing, which resulted in the man bending down and scratching her on the head in a way that she quite enjoyed. This made her tail wag even faster, something Moritz had not thought possible.

"Your looking for a trainer? Who did you say sent you?"

"I didn't say actually, but I was sent by Kyra. Kyra Shallon, she is my combat instructor. And my name is Moritz."

The man grunted in acknowledgement of his words, peering down at Naymon as he continued to scratch her.

"Kyra, the name rings a bell. And you want o learn to hunt and track. Anything else? You brought the dog along, so I assume you'll be using..."

Moritz filled in for the name of the hound, since that seemed to be what the man was reaching for.

"Naymon. Her name is Naymon. And yes, I would be using her. And if possible also learning a bit about a ranged weapon, Kyra specializes mostly in close combat weapons and techniques."

"Right. Well I could introduce you to someone. If you want to do tracking, Orim or Liard are both good bets, both are skilled in tracking. As for ranged weapons, we use all sorts here. Of the two, I would say Liard is the animal lover, so probably best to ask him. Hey, anyone seen Liard? Is he around?"

At the large mans request several people around the room answered. One seemed little more than a grunt, another little more than a grumble. One seemed to more point than speak.

"Think he's sleeping it off, probably still upstairs. Don't think he made it home after yesterdays hunt."

"Did he make it back? I never saw him come in."

"He took longer, was helping drag something back they caught. Didn't come in with the rest,"

Seeming to navigate the peoples comments and performing as a translator, the big bear of a man took his turn to speak.

"I'm Stan by the way, Mortiz. Most of the people seem to think he's asleep in the room upstairs. Sounds like he came in extra late and drank a lot, so he's probably sleeping it off and hasn't woken. If he doesn't wake up just toss some water on him, tell him I told you to. Just head up the stairs and look around, its not a big room just a bunch of bunks. Shouldn't be too hard to find him if he's there. Ask for Liard. Just don't throw any water on his cat, he's probably got it with him and she's more likely to be upset than him."

Moritz nodded in thanks and looked around before quickly finding the stairs. Heading up them, which required pulling Naymon away from Stan, Moritz looked around to see there were three rooms. One however had an open door, and an odor coming from it. Stepping towards it he found a mostly dark room which seemed to be filled more with bunks than room. He almost expected to see some stacked atop each other, so mashed in was everything. Inside he saw a few people sleeping on beds, but of the few people only one had a cat with him.

"Excuse me, are you Liard?"

As Moritz said this the man in question opened one eye halfway, looking about for the source of the noise.

"Who the petch wants to know! I'm trying to sleep you piece of shyke!"

Moritz was less than clear on what some of the words meant, but was sure from the contect it was not nice. Letting out a sigh he continued, not caring if he annoyed the man.

"I assume that means you are Liard? well seeing as I'm the one asking, I'm the one that wants to know. Also Stan said if you wouldn't get up, I should toss some water on you. Fair warning."

"Petch, fine! I'm up. Just let me go relieve myself! I'll be down in a chime, just go wait by the bar."

saying this the man did indeed get out of bed, heading out of the room at high speed. As he did a small cat came running out of the room after him, making a noise at Naymon as it passed.

Naymon for her part seemed unperturbed, simply standing and panting as the two passed. Apparently the dog had no issues with cats, and got along with them fine. Of course it had been raised around other animals at the pet store, so perhaps was simply used to cats from growing up around them.

Letting out a sigh Mortiz headed back downstairs, taking a seat at the bar near Stan while he waited for Liard to finish his morning ablutions.

After a short wait Liard came loudly into the bar area. Moritz had simply been sitting and waiting when he came in, clearly not needing long to relieve himself. Naymon barked at the sudden loud entrance, but stayed sitting where she was near Moritz.

Liard spent a moment looking around the room before spotting Mortiz.

"There you are. Petching woke me up! And threatened to pour water on me! Now what do you want you piece of Shyke."

Stan laughed through his cup, in the middle of a drink as he heard what Liard said. He took another moment to finish his draw before turning around and giving Moritz a pat on the head.

"You actually said that, good lad. I told him too Liard, he needs a tracking instructor and I thought of you. Not his fault you planned to sleep in all day. And I figured a bucket of cold water would do good to wake you up. Don't worry I told him to make sure if he did it to not get your cat wet. Too bad you woke up, I would have enjoyed seeing your wet rear down here. Aye and watch the language, he's just a kid."

Squinting somewhat Liard seemed to just notice Moritz and see him more closely. Which made sense, seeing as he had been half asleep when Moritz spoke to him before.

"A kid... Thought it was just a short guy. Whatever, I'll use what language I want thank you when some guy wakes me up when I'm trying to sleep!"

Moving to the bar Liard sat next to Moritz, holding out his hand to the barman for a apparently common enough morning drink that he did not need to ask for it. The cat in question curled around Liard's feet, resulting in Naymon sniffing at her. This ended when said cat hissed at him, and Naymon appeared to lose interest or think the cat was too much trouble. Instead she returned to Stan, trying and succeeding at getting another scratch.

Once he had finished an entire mug of something Liard seemed to finally be properly awake, and turned to Moritz.

"Fine, so what do you want? It better be good, since it required me to wake up just for it."

Moritz let out a sigh, seeing the man was not in a good mood. Of course he could not tell if the man was always as such, or just did not like being woken up.

"As Stan said, I am in need of some training. I recently acquired Naymon here, and my combat instructor Kyra said I should come here to learn how to track. After all, she is a tracking dog."

"Have you been out hunting before? And... Hey, whats with your eyes?"

"My eyes? Oh, I'm a kelvic."

"Kelvic? What, you some kind of goat kelvic?"

"No actually, I'm an Okomo."

At this Liard, taking a sip of a second mug, spurted a bit out over his front. Or more in truth dribbled it down his front, opening his mouth to talk while forgetting something was inside of it.

"Your an Okomo kelvic? Don't think I've seen one of those. Hmm... Well Okomo are good at getting around the mountain, wouldn't hurt to have one along... But when your like this, I don't know, your young."

"How am I supposed to learn how to use Naymon to track if she doesn't come along? And I can't exactly take her with me when I'm in my Okomo form, can I?"

In thought for once, Liard mulled things over.

"Well, it sounds like you've not been out of the city much, not moved around on the mountain. So how about this. I'll take you along once, while your in your Okomo form. Think of it as a test. If it goes well, I'll give you a second lesson, and you can bring Naymon along then. Agreed?"

Moritz paused, thinking the offer over. It was true he had not been out on the mountain, only in areas around Lhavit which were much safer. Going out into the proper wilds, that was another thing entirely. Perhaps it did make sens to test him first.

"Fine, how much do you ask for a lesson?"

"Since your new, the going rate for a novice is five topaz kina a lesson. I'm gonna be busy for a bit, so how about we meet... In ten days. The sixty fifth. Say midday. That way it will be light enough I don't have to worry about you stepping into anything. Meet me near the Amaranthine Gate, and don't bring more than your clothes and the money since I'll need to carry your stuff while your changed."

Moritz nodded, and then gave Stan a nod who winked in response. As he got up from his seat Naymon moved from her spot on the ground, moving quickly after Moritz.

"Agreed, ten days time at the city gate. Midday. Half a Kina. I will see you then."

With that Moritz gave the man a nod and headed out the door, bringing Naymon along with him. It was a bit of a trip back to home, and Moritz enjoyed the travel with Naymon as the energetic dog pulled along and sniffed at anything that took her interest.
