The quill scratched across the parchment page of his journal, the fresh page already more than half filled with what he had scraped together of Reimancy by himself. If he flicked the page between this new intallment of magic and past one, like the Flux for example, it was clear this was a new exploration. Very few additions had been made since the first few pages that read like he had copied it from a book – much like most of the rest. He had tried to find the book at first but had since given up, the reading of his letter about, or between, Tazrae and himself telling him that she had taken it back into her custody.

Don’t blame her, if it’s hers, but sure could be useful right now he mused to himself as she frowned at the pages, carefully finishing the notation he was making before taking up charcoal and fleshing out a rough sketch of the Res orbs he had made and the approximated sphere of influence around himself he had found was the current limit of his control.

His fingertips grew dark from his smudging as the sweat started to bead upon his brow, his concentration currently split as a formal test of how much that control was absolute within said sphere. He wasn’t pushing himself overly hard, he had restricted himself to one glistening silver orb of Res, slowly orbiting his body as he worked at his journal. It was as much an exercise at multitasking as it was at Reimancy, though he could feel the drain in both respects. He was used to splitting his attention these days, delving into magic had forced him to think differently and it was now bearing fruit. He needed to know whether he could manipulate Res whilst doing other things – his mind flickering up with the image of the Vision Waters briefly, as one example.

“There…about as good as it’s going to get before I discover more with this. The real question, though, isn’t about spheres of control now…is it? It’s about what it can be used for. How could it become a weapon?” he mused to himself as he finished up with his drawing and writing, pushing himself to stand up fully and stepping back from the table a pace.

The Res continued to orbit him a few times slowly as he scratched his chin thoughtfully, eventually returning to his outstretched hand as he extended his arm – for some reason the physical gestures and…well touch almost…helped him with his control. He suspected that might be because he was new to the magic and that necessity might fade over time. Then again, he was quite a tactile man and so perhaps it never would truly fade, simply a part of his unique personality that reared its head within his powers. He thought about what he might create with the Res construct, after a few moments his eyes lingering upon the battered remains of a chair sorely in need of replacing due to the wear and tear it had had inflicted upon it.

He smiled and mentally started to stretch the Res orb, willing it to be more malleable, almost droopy in nature, eventually letting it take over once it got the mental image he was trying to imprint upon it and watching it become almost like a coiled rope. That was another curious thing he was discovering, the Res was almost instinctive, taking a while tog et what he wanted it to do but, once it had grasped the communication it seemed to almost take over and do it of its own accord, the effort required by him lessening somewhat at that point.

Stone Dreams Pt II

When he was ready, he took a deep breath and started to swing the res construct back and forth, attempting to generate momentum. When that didn’t work overly well, he blinked a few times before snorting at his own foolishness. Djed pool he might have but he still had difficulty thinking like a mage. Accepting his power wasn’t the same as embracing it and he still thought like he was on the streets, an actual rope in his hand. Shaking his head, he sighed and then refocused his attention, this time using his willpower and fortifying his mental strength as best he could. It worked better, the slithering Res starting to make its way towards the chair leg, but slowly. He frowned scratched his chin and then opted for using both methods.

He got the momentum going with his arm and then his mind took over, and it worked much better, the end of the Res rope snapping towards the leg of the chair and wrapping around it. As it lost momentum and started to un-coil, he tried to will the res to ‘combine’ and knot itself together, keeping it wrapped around the leg. It slipped away, however, and he breathed frustration through his nose as he pulled the Res back and began another try. Again, it didn’t ‘lock’ into place a she hoped, though there was a wavering, as if it had thought about it but had not fully committed. He made a noise in his throat and tried again, this time all but throwing the whole thing at the chair leg, surprised but pleased as it wrapped around and stuck, grinning foolishly as he tugged and the chair moved slightly once the res had become fully taut.

Pausing to wipe the back of his free hand across his forehead, and rake his fingers back through his hair, he could feel the slight prickle of sweat upon his skin. He was getting better with each exploration, but it was still a struggle to maintain the connection for working with the Res. Extruding was difficult as time passed, but for now he’d be okay so long as he stayed within his limits and ate a whole table of food after he had finished his attempts at learning.

He frowned in deep concentration, trying to will the Res into solidifying, becoming a kind of hard, uniformly coloured stone – he had heard it called basalt, but he wasn’t sure if that was correct. He had to close his eyes in the end, all of his mental strength behind the commands, before it finally tore through itself, the colour changing and the Rest solidifying, falling outside of his control and the weight pulling it from his hands, where it broke into a few pieces, tipping the chair with it before the clattered back onto its legs.

“Hmmm, conversation…stops control? But…then how do you get stories of fireballs and…the rest? There must be a way to retain control…surely?” he mused to himself tiredly, taking a break and sipping upon some water from a nearby polished wooden cup.

He turned it around in his mind, wondering what the best approach would be. Had it been because of the type if earth material he had turned it into? Had it been too…inflexible, perhaps? But that didn’t seem right, from his notes he was supposed to be able to control the Res no matter the medium it became. Or…was that it? He could control the Res…but not the thing it became? So…was it possible for…partial conversion? He breathed deeply for a few chimes, considering how he might achieve the latter, just as a proof of concept rather than something fancy and potentially terribly draining. He hummed to himself as he though, scratching a this beard absently.

He spent some time extruding some more Res, the silvery droplets coalescing into an orb which he then spent further time stretching and shaping it with his hands, pulling it apart and finding it much easier and less resistant to change when he physically moved it. He was starting to think he was far more tactile than he thought he was, most of his magics only responding at their best to his physical movements. He frowned at that, wondering if it would be a limitation for the rest of his life. It wasn’t that he disliked it that much, but it was hard to see him being able to use it in a combat, or emergency, situation if he had to constantly shape it like clay.

Regardless of his reservations he continued, gripping the orb in two places and pulling at it, fingers curled into a tube that physically stretched the silvery substance into the rope construct once more. Once finished he took a few deep breaths and a few chimes to relax his tensed muscles and unclench his jaw, trying to become more at ease with his use of Reimancy. He swung the Res a few times back and forth, the light catching it, and setting it ablaze like Leth himself in the sky, before snapping it forwards towards the chair once more. This time it took only two attempts before it stuck there, around a different leg now, and he tugged it taut before relaxing the strain slightly and focusing once more.

“So…not full stone…or conversion…maybe something more flexible? Or…huh…can you convert just parts maybe?” he mused aloud slowly, thoughtfully.

He was in no rush so long as he wasn’t pushing it too hard, and just holding what he had wasn’t overly difficult even if it was tiring. He could feel the lethargy beginning to grope at his mind, claws would soon be latching on and sapping his strength. He resolved to figure at least one thing out before that happened and so reasoned that at least the ‘tied’ part of the Res would need to be solid, especially if it would be used to capture, the reason he had thought of it. His eyes narrowed as he focused upon a few inches beyond the Res wrapped around the leg, up to include the leg part too. Willing it to solidify into the basalt type, trying to imagine a ‘core’ of res at its centre being unaffected, he was satisfied when it converted with more speed this time. He tugged, testing his premise and grinned when it held and pulled the chair forwards and inch or so.

He had achieved what he wanted, but he had another idea he wanted to test – combinations of earth conversion – and this was an ideal time to try it out he suspected. He cast through his imagination for something flexible that was still reasonably solid…and from the earth spectrum of elements of course. It was difficult, he found, realising that his experiences with the element that apparently defined him was minimal at best. He made a mental note to change that, otherwise he’d be forever limited to a narrow spectrum of things he could do. In the end he opted for a clay substance that he had seen people shaping occasionally, and it appealed to him as he knew it came from the earth, despite what might be added to it, and it felt apt given his hand shaping of his magics.

“Hmm…reddy orange perhaps?” he mused as he conjured up the memory of it, soft and sticky, dense but infinitely malleable. The sensation of grinding it between his fingers, as he had been able to do after pilfering a handful out of pure curiosity, was recalled alongside the smell.

He focused and spoke to the Res, audible to anyone who might be listening in secret, free hands sliding up and down the Res rope in his attempt to get at least some of it triggered so that the rest would follow. It took some time but eventually the colour he had been imagining started to ripple along the silvery iridescence, until all of it was covered, converted but for a thing strand at its core, like the harder stone, and with a chuckle of victory he wriggled it and watched it move much as Twilgiht did, a slow and wavy wriggle.

“Not as nice a colour as you though, eh buddy?” he said, eyeing the serpent that was curled up in the corner, watching him as his tongue flicked out, as if assessing his efforts and judging silently, “come on now, first attempts mate…be nice” he snorted to himself.

Stone Dreams Pt II

He grinned at Twilight, watching his scales shimmer in the changing lights for a few moments before returning to his usual thoughtful frown as to how he could take the principles he had learned so far and twist them for some other purpose. It wasn’t about being entirely different, he had learnt over time, it was more about establishing a theme and altering it slightly. The results were always different though, which was perhaps some silent lesson upon the infinite numbers of combinations the Djed could be put in to create…well the world and all life as far as they understood it.

“The real question is…what is the variation of this one. A rope grapple…sure that’s useful…maybe with climbing even…but I had the idea of capturing something first…what is more...efficient, perhaps?” he asked himself, wiping sweat from his brow and taking a few moments to eat some fruit from the bowl, peeling the banana and stuffing it into his mouth messily, not caring about etiquette due to being alone.

He liked the idea of a solid weight on the end of a more flexible thread, he had already seen how it could be teased around something to hold it into place. That too control, though, and perhaps further afield than he was capable of at present, so something else would be required. He tapped his fingers in quiet thought, wondering what it was that his ad hoc creation reminded him of. Something tickled at the back of his mind, taunting him even, and it was infuriating. Almost as infuriating as all of the curse business he was trying to puzzle out. This season had not been kind, it seemed, in any way. At least so far.

“Quiet you, I will get it” he told Twilight firmly, though the serpent did nothing but flick his tongue at Alric again, his wondered if the serpent could actually understand and was poking fun at him, but he shook his head and returned to his thinking, “wait…what was the weapon? Ball…something. Bowl something? Ball…bole…bola…bolas?! Bolas!”

He had no idea if that was the actual name, but it felt right. More importantly, however, was the image in his mind that he had been searching for. He grinned and took a deep breath with both hands out, extruding Res into two orbs about the size of his palms, leaving them to hand in the air as sweat started to stain his back, his hands then sweeping inwards to join together and a small, thin rope of Res connected them together. He spent a while thickening all of it into it looked large enough to bring down an Okomo…then let it all hand in the air and his hands fall to his sides with a relieved sigh. He paused for a while, the construct hanging in the air for a time before he continued his work. First was solidifying the outer balls, all but for a small core in the middle that still fell within his control. Next, he turned the rope bridging them into clay, as he had done before, and again left a core strand of Res for control.

He then dragged it back mentally with him through the air, stepping out of range of the chair he had been using by a good ten feet or so. He took a deep breath, raised his hand, and when he was ready launched the whole thing forwards with as much mental strength as he could, and watched as it flew towards the chair, curled around it and smashed the wood to pieces with a satisfying crunch. He blinked, sighed, and let go of his Res a few moments before he fell to his knees with deep breaths.
