Dimitri was incredibly bored. His master wanted him to learn the important duty of guarding Syliras' main gates. So he dropped him off with the gate guards and told him to listen to them and to watch what they did. He observed them checking food and animals entering the gates and providing slight harassment to the more beastly races. He was disgusted as every time a good looking women would be heading in or out of the gate they would often make rude, embarrassing as they approached or left. Often the women would hear bits of it and they would look mortified, but because they were knights often had to ignore it. Dimitri burned in hatred at the poor manners these men had, but held his tongue. A bad report to Master Adamal about him wouldn't end well.

"Hey squire! How's about we make things fun for ya? We do it with all the squires." Dimitri looked at him coldly as he continued, "Oo he's a fierce one. Anyways, if someone were to come in or out of our gates here, and were to cause trouble for us, we may have you settle it in a little sparring match. Gives you practice and gives us entertainment. Whatchya think bout that eh squire?"
"No, that's wrong."
"You'll do it, or your precious Adamal will be told that you were caught fondling women as they passed through, understand?"

Dimitri hung his head and nodded, praying no one caused trouble. He didn't want to fight an innocent.

A Gate Guard's Pastime (Delvin)

Devlin trudged along the path leading up to the gates of Syliras. After spending the night outside of the city he was ready for a proper meal. As much as he hated being in this place it was far more preferable to camping out somewhere. So fat his trip had been unproductive and he worried that he would find no new information here. However he hadn't been here very long so perhaps he was rushing things. Maybe it was just best to relax for a few days and get his mind right again.

He approached the gate and put on his best fake happy face for the guards. They would probably recognize him as often as he came and went from the city. Usually he gave them no real trouble but often spoke very sharply to them and very often insulting them. His tolerance for law enforcement was not very high, especially the Sylrian Knights. Certainly he was not very fond of them at all.

"Well good day gentlemen! Keeping the villains away I'm sure, hmm?" He grinned stupidly as he held his arms out showing that he was no threat to them. He glanced around at the men standing around, they all seemed bored. He wondered if they even took their jobs seriously. Then he came across one who seemed much younger than the others. "New recruit huh? Hey kid, so whats your deal huh? Why waste your time with these guys?"

The Knights smiled and gave a look at Dimitri that told him this was the one. He sighed. "Its not a waste if it's another step in power. Care to spar? I'll show you how big of a waste it is." Dimitri attempted to be intimidating both in posture and bark. One of the guards said, "I strongly recommend it, might help you keep your rude mouth from spewing nonsense. There are rules however. No magic, no lethal blows, and keep it civilized. You can spar over there where we can watch. Follow the rules or we will intervene."

Dimitri unhooked his sword and tower shield and wandered over. He was only in his breeches and shirt, not needing to wear full armor today. He would have to move faster, which would be good practice for him. He stood in the small clearing, eyeing the many archers and gate guards preparing to watch. He would fight honorably. And win.

"Another step in power?" Dev shook his head in disgust, it was such a typical attitude for a guard. Now the kid wanted to spar with him, was he so desperate to prove himself? This was why he despised the knights, they carried themselves with arrogance and seemed to only want to further their influence over others. But the hypocrisy of his thinking was that Dev often used hypnotism to accomplish the same things but he would never admit to being anything like these people.

Dev very much wanted to show what he was capable of, however the only weapon he had any experience with was a simple dagger. And he was not very skilled with it, as he only had used it on occasion and that was usually just one stab and done. He had been beaten in duels and fights many times so he was not afraid of that, it came with the territory of how he lived his life. If his magic failed him then he was usually in trouble. But did not back down from fights, he was a very strong believer in Whatever doesn't kill you can only make you stronger. Perhaps he could learn something useful in a spar.

"Very well I will spar with you." He walked casually over to a clearing and removed his long silken cloak and threw it to the side. The sleeves of his undershirt had been ripped off and loose threads hung around the edges. Slowly he pulled his dagger out from behind his back twirling it around as he slid his feet into his stance. One are he placed behind his back while the other held the dagger out if front of him in a defensive position. The rules were no magic bu he very much intended to use magic here. Hypnotism was not easily recognizable and he would use that to his advantage if possible. "Time to show off for your buddies, kid. Let's see what you can do." His eyes narrowed as he started at the mans midsection, attempting to read his center of gravity shifts. A slight grin crept across his face as he felt his heart slow down.

A Gate Guard's Pastime (Delvin)

Dimitri slowed his breathing and closed his eyes as his training told him to. He relaxed his muscles and gripped his shield and sword firmly and loosely. He would have to be careful not to severely maim this man during the spar. He spread his legs slightly further than shoulder width apart. Then he brought his left foot forward, and moving his right leg back slightly. He bent his knees slightly to lower his center of gravity, and raised his massive tower shield in front of him. He held his sword, point down, hanging slightly above the ground, slanting out to his right slightly. In this position, his tower shield was out in front.

He opened his eyes, and saw his opponent draw his dagger. The man was a good bit shorter than himself, so he didn't bother looking over his shield. He could see his opponent from the right of his shield take a slight defensive position. He took a deep breath and quickly closed the gap between them. He knew the man needed to get quite close, so he started with a slash at the man's left ribs. He would twist the blade so should it strike he would merely receive a large bruise from the flat of his blade, all the while keeping his eyes locked on the dagger and the man's empty hand. He didn't strike with his shield, waiting to see if the man would attempt to close the space between them. If he did attempt to come closer Dimitri would hit him with the wall of steel he held.

Bad News Everybody. School is picking up, Exams are beginning to happen, homework is growing time consuming, I may soon be evicted from my apartment, I'm dealing with severe and physical fights among several of my best friends, and I can't seem to find a time to get much needed sleep. I'm terribly sorry, but don't expect to see much of me for a long while.
