The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

20th Day of Summer, 509 AV

The den was relatively quiet for a summer night and Irriari was glad. More often than not, the energy of the colony raised with the weather, and the din often because irksome to anyone trying to focus- especially the artists. She was no artist, but her task at hand was a daunting one. Her poison collection was still quite small- she only had one plant that she had collected in the wild- and poisons that had been stockpiled by the colony over time. The few that she had crafted had already been used or lost their potency.

Irriari looked at Sevrai and spoke, hoping the girl would have some answers,

“How am I supposed to know what all these plants and poisons are? What if I forget?”

She had known for quite a long time that she would have to find some way to scribe the reagents she collected onto paper or find some other way to remember them all. While her books were useful, they hardly ever had accurate drawings of the plants in the Sea of Grass- if they had any at all. The books almost never spoke of which way to prepare the plant to ensure that it was potent enough, and it was a horrible waste of her already sparse material to test every plant each time.

Sevrai quickly opened Irriari's favorite book on poison, 'The Art of Agony: A Poisoners Field Guide', and flipped to the back of the book. While Irriari couldn't understand the cramped writing that skirted the edges of the pages, she did enjoy the sketches of the plants. Some were quite detailed, like the one on the current page.

“This is the 'Bloody Tear' plant.” Sevrai read.

Irriari examined the drawing carefully and traced her claw tip lightly on the stem of the plant. The plant was drawn to size, though Sevrai had assured her that if a plant was too big, as many were, that the author would have make a note of it, with an approximate scale. The drawing had a close up box of the toothed leaf, which was supposed to be the most poisonous part of the plant. It also included a listing of where the plant had been found, organized by the most populous areas to the least. Finally, Irriari's favorite feature of the book was the short quote at the bottom of the page. They were often succinct, and funny, however they offered a quick description of the effects of the poison. Out of all her books, this one was the most consistent, but both Sevrai and herself realized that without the ability to write, she would be very limited in her own abilities to make such a book for herself.

“Sevrai, grab me a few sheets of paper, and a bottle of ink.”

She had traded dearly for these with a cousin in the colony who found her interest in poison to be entertaining and novel. But regardless of her cousins stance, the price was firm, 5gm for ten sheets of paper a medium sized bottle of ink. He had paid less from the trader, but the colony did not get to replenish their stock as often many of the artists would like, so any of their stockpiled wares were not cheap.

Sevrai returned with the bottle of ink and paper and sat them in front of her carefully. Thankfully, her two Hasale'ith'savanht plant had dried well over the past few days and kept most of their structural integrity as she prepared to etch their image into the paper.

[Flashback] Organization and Anger

Postby Irriari on May 29th, 2011, 4:48 am

Irriari placed the plant on the ground to the right of the paper as carefully as she could. Many plants got so dry that they risked snapping when handled too roughly. How did artists sketch such things? She examined the paper and then the plant, then the paper once more. Did they start at the bottom and work their way up? Or was it best to start at the very top of the page and work down? The plant, while simple in appearance, looked infinitely complex when it was to be immortalized on paper. After a few more chimes, Irriari tentatively dipped a clawed fingertip into the ink and let the excess fall back into the bottle. Her clawed finger touched the light brown parchment and she tried to trace her finger against the page in an elegant curved line, to be the base of the smallest leaf. She nearly tore into the paper and ripped it to shreds when she saw what her first attempt had given her. The line was top heavy with ink and a awful glob of the black liquid was positioned at the start of the mark, while the bottom of the line had hardly any ink at all. The structure of the drawing itself left much to be desired. Instead of the wonderful curved shaped she had envisioned, the ink had formed a series of straight lines that had linked together. All in all, it was a disaster. Irriari ground her teeth and looked at the book that Sevrai held out towards her. Damn artists. How did they do it? The plants were shaded, and even the smallest fibers on the base of the stems were finely etched with a beautiful precision.

She sighed and breathed in, knowing that her first sheet of paper would not be a wonderful masterpiece as she had hoped, instead, it would be her scratch paper, a canvas for her failure. She dipped her claw in the ink again, this time, trying to get the ink to spread evenly across the tip of her nail. After the excess was gone, she doubted it made any difference, but it never hurt to try. Now, she would have to try for a simple straight line, like the stem of many of the plants. Irriari traced her finger down the side of the paper, making sure to move her hand at as even of a rate as she could manage. When she looked down at the paper she was much more pleased then she had been at her previous botched attempt. The line was far from perfect, but the ink had spread well, with no glaring clumps to be seen.

Irriari smiled and Sevrai nodded encouragingly. Irriari knew that she would not ever be of the same class as the artist who had illustrated her book, but if she could get the basic shape and structure down it would be to her benefit. Now, she would have to attempt a curved line. Her fingertip touched the paper and curled slightly when the line was of sufficient length. This time, the line wasn't as disjointed but the bottom of the line still didn't curve at the end.

Irriari looked at Sevrai and spoke

“What am I supposed to do? I can't use a quill, you know that... my hands, it just doesn't work.” she snarled and stared at the paper half hoping that the lines would manifest on their own. After a chime, they didn't and Sevrai spoke.

“You have to keep practicing.”

Irriari nodded and dipped her finger in the ink again and stared at the paper before she tried to draw a straight line and then directly after it, a curved line. It almost looked like a war scythe when she was through.

“I want to take a break from this for now, I'll try more soon... How are we labeling this?”

Sevrai looked down at Irriari and bit her lip. It would be a difficult conundrum to overcome, for sure. They both pondered the unmarked half of the paper, waiting for the other to speak.

[Flashback] Organization and Anger

Postby Irriari on May 31st, 2011, 5:14 am

Sevrai spoke first, thankfully, and her solution was nothing short of brilliant.

“Why don't you make up a code. The lines that come easily to you, the symbols you can best create... those can be what you use. The downside is that you have to remember them.”

Sevrai looked up at Irriari hopefully. Irriari waited for a moment, weighing the girls words, and thinking of what she could use as symbols. She nodded and gestured for Sevrai to continue speaking, if she any words left to say.

“And you would be the only one that knew the code- so if you made poisons that were solely your own,
writing them in your code would prevent others from stealing it. Well, unless a code breaker or someone really smart got a hold of the book.”

Irriari laughed at the thought of someone getting their hands on her precious belongings. The last fool who had tried in the colony had lost less than he deserved, but he had learned a valuable lesson in the process. While humans were smart, they could not fly, and her possessions could be hidden in the highest treetops. Regardless, Sevrai's plan was a good one, and she was eager to try to make her own code. The slave had her uses, and while she was hardly the brightest of slaves, she was often cheerful, and always eager to help. As such, Irriari wanted to look after her. Irriari reached under her bed and grabbed her pouch of mizas and handed the girl four silver miza before speaking.

“Now, let's get to work on this.”

Irriari grabbed the sheet of paper she had worked on previously and checked the ink on the page with the back of left hand. It was dry, so she flipped it around and began the laborious process of trying to make a code.

Quickly, she sketched a few random lines in a row, each symbol was small, and not bigger than three lines. All the lines were straight for simplicities sake. She looked up at Sevrai, who was beaming at the coins happily.

“What should I use these for? I thought that the straight lines could be a way to describe characteristics of the plant, like small, long stemmed or what ever else.”

Irriari pointed at the first symbol she had drawn. It was a vertical line of ink with two lines horizontally intersecting it at the bottom.

“That sort of looks like a root structure, yeah? So maybe that could mean 'poisonous root'?”

Sevrai studied the symbol and spoke, adding her own thoughts into the mix

“Well, you know you can't make them too obvious to on lookers, but I think that one will be ok. What about the second symbol? If I were you, I would list the most important traits, the things you need to know on a separate sheet. I could write them, and then we could make symbols for them.”

Irriari agreed with the idea. Making too many symbols was foolish and she would have a hard enough time remembering them as it was, but she hoped it would become easier with time. She loved poison though, and her passion fueled her. She handed Sevrai the paper and the girl grabbed the forgotten, quill to write down the various attributes as Irriari called them out.

The quill itself was made from the feather of a wild bird one of the colony members had found, slightly attached to his wing when he returned. When sharpened, it made a delightful writing utensil, and Sevrai was proud of it. Irriari began listing off the things she would need, at the minimum.

“I'll need to know about leaf structure and root structure... there's about four of five types for each. I'll also have about where to harvest it, and whether it is poisonous when cooked or raw. Oh, and I'll have to know about how to harvest it.”

Simply put, those were the basics. When each plant had it's own symbol, she could write which plants combined with which in the back, by simply using the symbols together.

Sevrai pointed to the list

“That's about eighteen symbols.”

Irriari groaned and hated that her next weeks would be filled with memorization and monotony. Somehow, she would have to make this fun. When Sevrai put the paper down they began the slow process of drawing out symbols and matching them to all the criteria she had specified.

[Flashback] Organization and Anger

Postby Irriari on May 31st, 2011, 5:58 am

After two hours of drawing symbols Irriari was exhausted. Her last thirty minutes had been the most productive, and the paper Sevrai had written on was finally complete. For now, the girl would have to read her the accompanying text but it was a start.

Irriari traced a few of the more difficult symbols over again, carefully, on her scrap paper as she decided what to do next. The symbol for 'poisonous root, lower half' was by far the most difficult to write. It contained a line, with another bisecting it perpendicularly, while a third crossed over the whole design diagonally from the top left through the midpoint to the bottom right. When done right, Irriari thought it looked fancy. When done wrong, it looked like a pile of glassbeak dung. She spoke to Sevrai while trying to keep her eyes open.

“We need to write up the hasale'ith'savanht plant, the whole thing, on new paper.”

Irriari took a deep breath and began the process of laying out the design in her mind before she penned it to the parchment. She would skip the drawing for now. The symbol for the name of the plant would be curved, as all the plant names were. It would be at the top of the paper, while the most pertinent statistics would be directly below the name. All the less needed information would be at the bottom and sides. After three or four chimes, she was satisfied with the end result in her mind and carefully dipped her clawed finger in the ink, examining it as the excess dripped off slowly.

She wrote the symbol for the hasale'ith'savanht plant slowly. It was small, and the basic form was inspired by a circle and an oval. While it wasn't perfect, and the oval had smeared to combine with the circle at the bottom when she lifted her hand, but it wasn't unrecognizable, so she pressed on as she yawned loudly. Sevrai was trying to stay awake as well, and failing from the looks of it.

She stared at the plant, already knowing the structure, but it was comforting to see it again before sketching the symbols that Sevrai had already put tic marks by. Small stemmed, toothed leaves, poisonous when raw, complex poisonous roots. The last of the criteria was hardly a surprise, as most plants were poisonous at the roots, even if no other part proved to be dangerous.

The first two symbols went by quickly, but in her haste, the third was a failure. The lines for poisonous when raw all blended together, and a indistinguishable blob lay in its place. Irriari hissed angrily. This was the last thing she had planned to do before sleeping and she had failed. Anger overcame her senses as she clawed the sheet of paper into multiple pieces and punched the earth. Her hand hurt slightly, but she had learned a long time ago not the strike the dirt with full force, as the ground always won. She stood up quickly and flapped her wings while pacing around the room.

Sevrai was more alert now, but knew not to say anything or move. Irriari sighed and fell onto the bed after a few chimes. She addressed the girl while her eyes closed.

“Pick up the messed up pieces. We'll fix it tomorrow and I'll try to memorize some of the symbols.”

Sevrai nodded and began to collect the shreds.

“Thank you, Sev.”

Irriari was happy that she had done something, and that parts of it had went so well, but frustrated that her final project had ended so badly. It was probably salvageable, but her anger had gotten the best of her again. Before she could think anymore, she drifted off and sleep overtook her.

NoteI will deduct 5gm, 5sm (for the paper and gift to Sevrai) when this thread is graded, unless you think that 5gm was too little for a Zith colony and the amount of paper/ink. Thanks!

You know, I hope she never bangs her head and gets amnesia and forgets that code, because that would be a lot of work and memorization forgotten... But good thread.
