[Solo] A Healer's Work is never done, Part 2

Zahari, the Chaplain of Aquiras, had as good as declined the Symenestra’s offer of help a few days prior. He didn’t seem to think that it would be of much use, and he was not afraid of dying either, but Veldrys‘ couldn’t help but wonder if there wasn‘t at least something that he could do. He had clearly seen that the human was in pain and that he had a hard time walking unaided. He knew that he would not be able to cure whatever it was that ailed him, that he couldn’t reverse all those unpleasant things that came with old age – only the gods could do that - but he was quite confident that he would at least be able to alleviate the pain a little – even if Zahari had never directly asked for it.

As a healer Veldrys felt that it was his duty to help those that were in need, even if they were human rather than members of his own race, and as a servant of Viratas he considered all those through whose veins blood flowed to be worth the same. He had come to respect Zahari. But what exactly did the human need? What kind of medicine would be best for him? Veldrys had assisted in births, he had dealt with broken bones, he knew how to extract teeth, but his knowledge of herbal remedies and joint pains was still limited compared to his skill as a surgeon. Would he even be able to get all the things that he needed in Denval?

He knew that ginger, rosemary, mustard and camphor had some of the properties that he was looking for. Those things should be relatively easy to get, either in a shop, from a meadow or from a tavern. Carrots could also be of some use, especially in the form of juice. He would start with that and save the more complicated things for later.

With that thought in mind the Symenestra left the Chapel that had become the closest thing to a home for him in recent months and walked into the city, nodding at the people that he passed by. Since his arrival two seasons prior the Symenestra had come to almost feel like a Denvali rather than the pale skinned, silver haired creature that he really was, and those people were no longer inferior beings for him.

First of all the Symenestra stopped next to a small patch of grass where he could see a few dandelions grow. Dandelion leaves had, as far as he knew, a diuretic quality, and the roots were a mild laxative. He would make sure that Zahari drank a tea with it regularly. He knelt down in front of the yellow flowers, looking around to see if anybody was watching as he did so, and then he willed the black claws that adorned his fingers to lengthen slightly, just enough that he would be able to dig the dandelions out more easily. It was a very minor use of Morphing and would most likely be relatively safe.

He had brought a basket with him. He put the dandelions into it, and then he filled the holes that had been left behind with fresh earth and smoothed the grass over them so that it wouldn’t be as noticeable. Once that was done, he made his way to the Stranger’s Welcome. A tavern most likely had all the ingredients that he needed. Only a chime later he was already on his way back to the Chapel. The basket was now filled with several fresh vegetables as well as a few small bottles with alcohol and oil.

Veldrys rather felt like some kind of alchemist, some kind of witch for a moment rather than a honorable doctor, about to make all kinds of strange mixtures.

The first thing he did upon returning home was to clean the dandelions, cut the roots and leaves off and leave them somewhere to dry. He also decided to keep the flowers. There was probably some kind of use for them as well.

Once that was done, he took a small knife. With the dull part of the blade he cleaned the carrots that he had bought, and then he cut them into pieces. They would need to be ground. That was something that would take a lot of strength. It seemed to take nearly an eternity until he was done, and his fingers had started to hurt a bit and become a little stiff. Physical labour was just not something that the Symenestra was used to. While he had ground the carrots, he had already heated a bit of water that he now added to the carrots. Once that was done, he strained the juice and finally filled it into a bottle that he put away so that it could cool down.

Next he opened a small bag with dried rosemary and poured the contents into another bottle, and then he added alcohol to it. The mixture would need to stand for about twenty days before he could strain it. Applied externally, it would relieve some of the pain in Zahari’s joints, and it was relatively easy to make more of it.

The last step was the creation of a very simple camphor salve. For that Veldrys had bought a container with lard that he put into a pot now, heating it until it had become completely liquid. In the meantime he washed the camphor and cut it into tiny pieces, and then he added it to the lard, boiled it and stirred a couple of times with a wooden spoon. Once that was done, he let it stand for a few minutes before he put it into a new container that he closed and put next to his previous creations.

It was then that he noticed the mustard and the ginger that he had also bought. Furrowing his brow, he looked at them for a moment, and then he shook his head. He wouldn’t do anything with those things, at least not today. He couldn’t feed the poor chaplain a dozen different remedies at once. It wouldn’t necessarily make him healthier. It might actually make him sicker than he already was. No, he would save ginger and mustard for later, and just give the chaplain a few tips regarding what he should eat together with the remedies he had already created.

Having come to that decision, the Symenestra put everything into his basket and set out to find the chaplain of Aquiras to give him a little gift.

XP Award: Plant Identification +1; Herbalism +5; Morphing +1; Cooking +1

Additional Notes:
I think I may have been unclear in our previous thread: Zahari was willing to try whatever Veldrys made, but doubted whether it would be efficacious. Or perhaps my memory is faulty. In any case, this was a neat little training thread!

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or concerns.

Keep writing!
