Varian Snowsong

Race • Nuit
Gender • Male
Date of Birth • Summer 5, 487 AV

ImageAppearance: At first glance Varian appears to be nothing more than a sickly looking Vantha. At 5'7" he is short for a normal human male, but not so short for a Vantha. As a mortal he was slender, but since becoming a Nuit he has lost more weight, almost to the point of looking emmaciated, but that is not immediately obvious as he tends to wear thick furs and leathers to hide his changed body. Before he became the undead creature he is now, his skin was of a pleasant golden shade, but it has consecutively become lighter, changing to the color of bleached almonds. Black hair with blue highlights frames his face. His eyes are almond shaped. Their color changes with his moods, although they are most often quite dark nowadays. Since he became a Nuit, dark bags have developed under them, giving him the appearance of a man who suffers from a lack of sleep, and his tongue has turned black. That is the reason why he rarely smiles. As a musician and a storyteller he has a pleasant voice, but sometimes it seems to be lacking something nevertheless since he doesn't breathe anymore. Like most Vantha, he has delicate features, although undeath ruined whatever beauty he possessed before to a certain extent. His movements are often somewhat slow, but he is still able to pass as human on most occasions. Having only become a Nuit the season before, he still occupies the same body he had as a mortal man and remembers what it was like to be and act human.

ImagePersonality: Varian is a troubled and confused man which is only too understandable. Being turned into a Nuit is a traumatic experience to say the least. Since he only became a Nuit in spring, he doesn't fully understand what it means to be undead yet. He has never changed bodies or turned another person into a Nuit. Many aspects of being a Nuit still scare and confuse him. He finds all the little procedures that are necessary to keep his body in good condition for as long as possible disgusting. While others of his kind tend to be detached and emotionless, Varian can be overly emotional at times. He clings to the remnants of his old life with the despair of a man that doesn't have a lot of time left. As a mortal, he was an adventurer, a cheerful, optimistic person, but this has changed. Varian is often quiet and withdrawn nowadays. He knows that things will never be the same again, that he will never get married and become a father now, that he will have to sever all ties with those he knew before and disappear forever. There is one thing that keeps him going though: As a Nuit he literally has eternity to collect songs and stories from all over the world. There is no limit to what he can learn now. And there is also the vague hope that he'll find a way to reverse his condition.

ImageHistory (to be rewritten):
Born to the Snowsong Hold, Varian grew up listening to songs and stories of his people. He was surrounded by music from an early age on. He had three siblings, an older brother, a younger brother and a sister. Every evening his family would gather in the Snowsong hold and make music together. Each of them played different instruments. Varian’s were the flute and the lyre, but more than making music he loved to collect stories. Even as a child, he would walk around Avanthal, talk to people and ask them about their life stories, and then he would weave them into a song.

Those early years in Avanthal were pleasant, but after a while there were no new stories to be found in Avanthal. Although he had just met a girl that he could see himself marrying, Varian began to grow restless. He would often spend hours at the harbour, watching the ships, wondering what else the world had to offer. He could not help wondering about the other races of Mizahar, about other cities, other people and the stories they had to tell.

At twenty-two he said farewell to his family and his girl and stepped onto a ship, promising that he would return when he had collected enough stories and made enough songs. In the following year he travelled from Denval to Syliras. He saw the island of the Konti, and eventually he ended up near Ravok.

He met a woman there that called herself Khadiya. She was a Nuit, wearing the shape of an exotic half Eypharian. She seemed pleasant, a scholar rather than an undead abomination that was looking for a new body or a new victim for an experiment, and thus he decided to trust her and come with her. She promised to tell him her story if he came with her. They travelled to Ravok together. Each evening she would reveal a bit of her adventures to him.

Upon reaching their destination, she invited him into her home. Being a Nuit, she didn’t need to eat or drink anymore, but she offered him a glass of wine. There was something in it though, and Varian eventually passed out. When he came to again, he found himself chained to a wall, with her standing in front of him, forcing him to drink her ichor.

She wanted to try and make another Nuit. She was well aware of the risks the procedure involved. While she had warmed to the Vantha during their journey together, she still didn’t consider him to be particularly important. His loss would be tolerable. She would see if the procedure worked on him and perfect it before she performed it on another person, a mage, somebody that had valuable skills. What followed then was the most pain Varian had ever been in.

While he was just an experiment for her, Khadiya still decided to teach him after realizing that he had survived the procedure and become undead like her. She told him of embalming, how to keep his body from decaying. She also taught him about the Nuit and offered him a place to stay, as a servant or an apprentice – he had just become a little more valuable now that he was a Nuit. She told him that they would go to Sahova together where others of their kind existed. He left her there though. He could not bear her presence. To him she was the one that had ruined him.

He wanted to go back to Avanthal, to see his family one last time before he returned to Sahova or tried to exist apart from those that were now his people.
