10 Day of Summer 505 AV

Val'pold had been dragged out of bed early by his mother to begin for the day. She had felt the need for some training in his weapons training. So it was that the bleary eyed boy found himself in the training ground as the sun came up.

The lady knight who was his mother approached him with some pads and a pratice blade. She tossed him the padding and he caught it grunting under the weight of it. He staggered and then stood up straight with the weight of it. He took the part out of the pile and began to slip them on and to get himself prepared for what he suspected was going to be a beating.

Next he was handed the pratice blade. It was a wooden blde, but it was desigened with weight in it so that the praticioner would understand the weight blance and what they would be carring. The young boy carried it for a moment testing the weight and trying to keep it up as his adopted mother smiled down at him.

He looked at her with a brave face under the weight of the padding and the blade. His blue eyes wide as he staired at her waiting for directions.

Darisa stood before Val'pold as he took a few tentative steps in the heavy armor padding. "Walk around in it holding up yor sword you need to pratice moving with all of that weight." The Twelve year old looked at him like she was crazy. The look she returned was just as serious. So with a down caust look he raised the practice sword.

Val'pold already could feel the muscles begining to complain. He walked around his steps a little wide as he walked. He for some reason felt that it would help in his walking. He moved slowlly the muscles in his arms grumbling at having to care the heavy weapon.

"Stop, Armor doesn't make you walk like that so stop it." The sharp voice command came from the Lady Knight. Val'pold stop his walking and looked back at her and then contiuned his circle walk. This time it was so akward. He returned to her and she nooded, it wasn't that she didn't understand it was just that a knight needed to be trained from the start with all of the weight.

"That will do, you will need to pratice getting used to wearing armor and carring that weapon. Now lets start on actually learning how to use that weapon." She had her own practice blade and took a stance. She motioned for Val'pold to also take the stances. "Let us start with the basics. You need to know how to hold your weapon, as well as your body. I have seen you and your friends trying to fight. You need to control you body and its motion. Its more then just a stick, it is an extension of your arm and so you must need to learn how to hold it."

So it was that Val'pold took the stance his mother showed him.

With the armor still weighting down upon him, Val'pold positioned himself with his feet spread apart and his body turned side ways. He held the sword the way his mother instructed him. He wanted to lower the weapon because while at fist it didn't seem all that heavy the longer he heald it the more it seemed to weight. The muscles in his arms were protesting.

He didn't let the weapon drop though. He wanted to be a knight and he knew that he would need to be strong so he gritted his teeth and turned his attention back to his mothers teachings. She was having him start at the begining. It wasn't very fun, he was hopeing to already starting fighting duels, and he said as much. "When do I get to fight a duel?"

She looked down at the child who she raised and loved even if the two looked nothing alike. Her lips twisted into a smile, but it was only for a moment. "When you can do the drills perfectly." She said in a no nonsence voice. "Lets get you started on them. You will need to start with the basic movements." She paused and he corrected his hold on the sword. "Let us start with the thrust. Common, but must be done correctly."

She motioned for him to take a stance and then she had him extend his hand out as far as he could. "You don't ever want to extend your arm out this far." She walked over and gentle pushed him. "Can you see how your balance it comprimised when you do." He couldn't but he nodded his head any way. "I want you to find the comfortable medium were you can actually use a thrust but at the same time not loss your balance."

Boredom and pain were the two words that were that ran across the young mans mind, who was really a boy. He pulled the practice blade back and forth. He would thrust it forward and then pull it back, he was trying to find a balanced position. He was only dimmely begining to understand what his mother was talking about.

He could fee the weight affecting the way he held his body. That additional weight could make him not as stable on his feet. He noticed the if he pushed to far he would defently feel less stable so he began to correct it by not pushing as far. His teachers eyes watched him, with a hard brown stair before she stepped forward. "A thrust does need to actually go forward. With the way your thrusting you would have to be face to face to actually hit them."

The blue eyes looked up at her and then set once again in a determined expression as he thrust out a little farther. At first the boy was going to far, but he soon corrected it one his own and soon he was varying in a middle ground. After a moment he noticed a look and adjusted his grip as he contiuned to thrust.

His arm was beging to tire and his body was screaming from the weight of the armor when he looked to see his mother motioning for him to stop. "That is some good practice for the morning. We are going to have a small run to help build your strength and get you used to moving in armor." She waved her hands and a tired boy began slowlly jogging behind her.

Val'pold looked at her with an exasperated look at her most recent comment. REALLY running. The look on her face was set that she wasn't going to take any arguements. He sighed having long learned that that look wouldn't listen or except arguement. He began to run after her as she moved around the compond. Lift up one foot after another he did feel the pain pass from one area to another. The muscle through his body were working as they had never worked before.

He wondered why the rutine and thought back to the conversation they had had the night before. Being a knight wasn't something any one just did, you had to be willing to work at it and to make sacrifices. It was hard work and would require hard work from him. He briefly began to wonder if this is what she was talking about. This was hard and she wore this armor ever day.

He began to see more of the future. He would have to work and struggle each day growing stronger and growing more confident at his weapony skills. He could hear his breathing becoming heaver as he contiune to run and work on building up his bodies strength.

They burn was begin to hurt as ran and after a while he noticed that his mother was slowing down her run and so he slowed down, he was sure that they had circled the place twice now, and were going for a third lap around the place. The slower speed was easing up a bit on the strain on his muscles but he kept on running behind her being to wonder if he really wanted to do this every day.

Finally they had slowed down the run and it had turning into a jog. Val'pold looked towards his mother and noticed that she wasn't even winded. She was clearly in a lot better shape then himself. He could feel his muscles beginning to ache as he finally stopped and leaned against the wall. His breath came in gasps and his longs seemed to burn, he didn't consider himself to be a weakling despire his slenderness. So why was he breathing so hard and why did he feel like he had just been beaten up?

Turning he looked at his mother as she looked him over with a half smile. "It is a lot of physical work. Being a Knight is just that work. Sacrificing yourself, your laziness for the good of others. As a squire you are expected to give of you time and give up your soft life, as a Knight more demands will be added on to you." Her wise eyes looked him over. "On a good note when you have gotten yourself into shape you only have to maintain."

She looked around again. "Take a few minutes to just walk around and then we will get back to drills. There is still a lot for you to work on today. Don't sit down your muscles will seize up." Val not understanding what seize up meant was still obedient and began to walk around the training area thinking about what had been said to him. She was inviting him to make up his mind, he realized, that was the critical thing about his lessons to this point. She would let him go another route, but a certian stubborness came upon him as he thought about it. He wasn't willing to give up on his dream just because he would be required to leave his comfort zone and give of himself. His blue eyes hardened and after two laps he returned, his muscles were still sore and he was still tired but his mother nodded as she saw the look in his eyes.

"Alright there are any number of blades and weapons for you to use, there are also a number of shield sizes all of which you will need to get used to. then you can pick which kinds work best with your style." She paused. "Lets give you a taste of the equipment." She walked over to the arms rack and enlisting an older squire brought over a series of weapons and shields. Val was handed a short sword first. "Lighter weapon. shorter blade, does allow for better control though." Val took the blade and holding it had his handling of the weapon corrected. So it contiuned that he tried a long sword, gladius, and finally they attempted to have him handle a two handed sword. That one didn't work out to well. As he handled these weapons he was taught the differences between them and how to handle them. They all had there tricks. He enjoyed the feel of the long sword. Extra reach with better control then the the longer blades. After wards he was shown the shields. He was handed different shields of different sizes and shapes. They also hand different handles and he was taught how to hold each kind. "Some times you just have to use the shield at hand and you have no say over what is on hand." She showed his a bit about how they were held in comparison to the blades that one would hold. Eventually she returned the equipment to its homes.

Val was still sore and tired by the end of the lesson and now his mind had a large amont of information stored in it. He was able to distract himself from his body pains as he walked home by focusing on the lessons that he had been taught.

[Flashback]Mother Like Son [Closed]

Postby Val'pold Aurelius on June 18th, 2012, 5:17 am

Val’pold returned the next morning with his mother, his body stiff and sore from yesterdays practice, but he had been told that would be the situation for the first little white. He suspected that he wouldn’t be so sore if he hadn’t been in the heavy armor, but as he looked at his mother who just raised her eyebrow her arms crossed as if she could read his mind. She wasn’t unhappy just waiting. He went over and slipped on the armor taking longer then normal because of his stiff muscles. His blue eyes looked longingly at the older squires and knights who had already passed this stage of the training. He wished he was that skilled.

Once the armor had been donned they started on their run. Val ran to the best of his ability, the mental struggle not to give up an epic battle. He wanted to just go home and crawl into bed, but he knew that path would lead to an apprenticeship for him to some craftsman. If he was skilled he would be able to live comfortably but he wouldn’t be a fighter, and more importantly he would have to face his mother and her disappointment. No she had given up so much to raise him he wouldn’t let her down. So he lifted one foot and then the other while carring the weight of the armor. After what seemed forever they finally began to slow down and Val was able to jog next to his mother. “Once you can run in armor you can run with out it even better. We are building your muscle and your endurance. I am not expecting you to be a runner, but sometimes you will have to chase something not in armor and if you can’t run in armor you won’t catch them.” She said by way of explanation. She got a node to her comment, which seemed to satisfy her. They slowed to a walk before heading over to the swordplay section of the yard.

“Alright lets focus on the longsword, the common weapon of the Knights, and I suspect one of your favored.” She said with a smile. “Do you remember your practice forms from yesterday.” He nodded again and she looked at him for a moment longer before retrieving one of the practice swords. After taking it they began to go through the basic positions of sword play. Val had a good memory and didn’t need her to repeat any of the steps. She made some adjustment to his positions but it was stuff that he hadn’t learned yesterday. She then began to teach him the name of each of the moves with the blade. “Later you will have to perform these actions one right after the other as I call them so learn and memories them.” Val nodded and his eyes focused and he concentrated even harder. He was taught each of these movements, and practiced them with his mother standing by him going through the same steps. He appreciated that he could watch her as they moved so that he could see the actions.
