Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

The "Two-Leggeds" (Solo)

Purpose: Entering Alvadas

The night was still young when Palla awoke from her late evening nap. Stretching her muscles as far as she could, she extended her body, tip to tip, along the soft grass. Her rusty orange and black fur stood up on end from the autumn chill in the air, dew clinging to the thick hair on her paws from the grass. In the distance, she could make out the two-legged’s city of Alvadas, and behind it, the Kitrean mountain range. The city was nestled in the valley just at the feet of the mountains, like a cub at its protective mother’s feet.

Her nerves were peaked. It had taken her two days to make it to her current location, and it was the first time she had been this close to a pod of two-leggeds – pod, being what she liked to call cities. It seemed only logical. A large population of two-leggeds living in close quarter. Pod. She liked it.

It had been days since she had seen the last pair of travelers pass by. They were leaving Alvadas – for whatever reason was beyond her understanding – and heading for another two-legged city. The two-leggeds were strange. What made them decide to move from place to place? Boredom? Lack of food? Danger? Those were the reasons she left locations of interest. Cougar spotting? Oops, time to go! No bugs or rodents to chase? Eh, better get moving. But this time, it was different. The passersby had spoken of the things they took interest in, the places they had been, the things they had eaten. It was fascinating to some degree, although beyond her understanding. It was their stories that made her want to see a two-legged city. And so it was with a nervous conscience that she headed in the direction the pair had come.

Palla sat up on her hind legs, sniffing at the brisk evening air as she observed her surroundings. Nearby, a thin-barked tree stood tall in a copse of smaller, less intimidating trees. It seemed to welcome her into its long, thin arms – a perfect evening climb to uncoil her still-waking limbs. Dropping back down to all fours, she waddled her way over to the reedy specimen, and placed her two front paws on its trunk. One would think with paws so thick with hair it would be impossible to grip the skin of the tree. Fortunately, with semi-retractable claws, the feat would be an easy one. It was with said claws that Palla gripped the tree as high as she could reach, and leapt to place her hind legs at the base of the trunk. Straining only slightly to pull her body weight up, she alternated between pulling with her front paws, and pushing up with her hind ones.

Hmm, if I could reach the top, I could get a better look at the two-leggeds’ fortress.

Image It was with high ambitions that she continued to make her way to the top. As she neared branches, she reached up to grapple onto them and push with her soft belly to traverse them one at a time. She worked the thinner branches like tightropes, occasionally slipping and breaking the more weak or dead ones as she went.

Along the way she sighted a little nest wound together by tiny branches and grasses. Two tiny eggs sat unattended, cold and alone. Nosing the little nest, she inspected it for any sign of the mother or father bird. Her prodding did not seem to elicit any kind of angry descent from a feathered guardian nearby, and so it was with a heavy dose of salivating that she reached out with her teeth and nabbed one, cracking it open. She lapped up the yolk and embryo, savoring the first bit of sustenance for her night. Licking the shell down until it was crisp white, she felt her stomach growl and descended hungrily onto the next one in the same manner.

Upon finishing the little snack, she continued to pull her way up the tree, little legs getting slightly weary at the effort. Nevertheless, she eventually was perched high in the tippy top of the tree, using it as a lookout to observe the city ahead. She searched for its entrance point, committing to memory how she would enter. Surely she could waddle right up and slip on in without much hassle. From there, honestly, she wasn’t sure what she would do. Find a tree. Harass little rodents. Maybe even stake out a two-legged and trick him into thinking she was just a little hungry animal. No matter the case, she would make it into the city and see what the bustle was all about.

Palla descended the tree to its medium high branches and sprawled across one, her long limbs dangling over the side. She wondered what the two-leggeds would say when they found out she had two sets of skin. Would they be offended? Amused? Disgusted? What was she supposed to say?

In her head, she practiced her name. Palla. Paaaalla. Pallaaa! It was a name that she was given by her parents for the wind whispering though the trees. The word meant literally in her language “whisper through trees” or “windwhisper.” She liked it, and thought she would keep it for seasons to come. Her own father had bonded to a dark-skinned two-legged woman, who renamed him. He accepted obligingly. It made her wonder; How could he just leave his name behind and begin responding to another one? Was it difficult? Maybe so, and maybe one day Palla would encounter the same.

Making her way back down the tree, she felt her anticipation grow. Was this really it? Was this really, really it? She made her way slowly to towards Alvadas, purposely taking her time to avoid the edginess inside. It wasn’t working. She was afraid, and she knew exactly why:

Her first two-leggeds. Would they like her? Would she like them?

She huffed a sigh as the coarse hair on her body stood up on end. Perhaps that was the problem – she was making too big a deal out of the situation. She was scared, and yet here she was, making her way up to the city of her own accord. Swallowing her inhibitions, she told herself that there was really only one way to find out more about the habits of the two-leggeds:

Join them.
