Timestamp: Up to Gabrielle (before Winter 10)
Location: The shore around Syliras

The man had approached Gabrielle several days ago in the docks. Tall, dark, and handsome, his smile would have been becoming if not for the arrogant tilt it had. It was complemented by an air of braggadocio, suggesting that the word "hardship" was not in his vocabulary. He (or more likely, his parents) had evidently done well in life, as a robe of finest silk had befitted his slim frame when he had strut up to Gabrielle that dewy morning.

"Hello, my dear," He said in a tone that clearly suggested she was supposed to swoon with him around. "I hear you are pretty good with a boat, and are one of the Svefra, no? Perchance, do you think you could lend out your fine vessel for a day? My name is Damias, and several of my lads want to go out fishing."

Whatever her response, the young man would not take "no" for an answer. He eventually came to the conclusion that Gabrielle should take him and several of his friends out to go fishing the day after next. Any complaints were quickly overrode by promises of money as payment, "a good deal of mizas, with your name on it" or so he had said, and Damias had left that morning satisfied he had made a deal. Whether the sailor he had so quickly conscripted the same way, however, was unknown.

In any case, Damias and his friends were waiting for Gabrielle two days later near the shore, fishing poles and lures in his hands. Besides the strutting youth, there were two others of approximately the same age; a corpulent young man with black locks who seemed excited by the promise of fish, and a twitchy blond-haired lad who seemed to thoroughly distrust everything around him.

"Erikur and Jase," Damias said breezily. "They'll be the ones coming with us. Are you ready to go, darling?" The pearly whites were flashed once again, the fishing pole in his hand wavering with anticipation.

2nd to 4th of Winter, 2011 AV

"Erikur, Jase, Damias," repeated Gabrielle in a blunt tone. She looked slightly cross, her brows furrowed and her lips curved into a frown. Though she had recently been contemplating letting outsiders on her casinor in exchange for cash, she had not expected someone else to simply state his way through. Nevertheless, she had not much to lose, plus she could use the trip as well. Even if she were a pirate, she knew it was much safer to do jobs of good taste rather than walking your way into trouble -- this was especially true when you were a pirate who was currently travelling alone.

The young Svefra had not really been expecting this random stranger to reappear when he said he would, but here he was. Her Lia often invited strangers aboard their ships, especially if there was a party, but it was the first time Gabrielle was travelling without her pod and she was an untrusting girl by nature. However, her instincts told her that these men wanted nothing but to fish, and were not here to cause her trouble.

She glanced at the three men before pointing to a wooden ladder that led aboard her casinor. Her small vessel was anchored to the docks, and she turned her back on them as she set to work, roping down the sails and then retrieving the anchor. The day was still early, the seas were still peaceful (though she knew it would become more haggard as Winter progressed), and she knew a nearby fishing spot.

Gabrielle ignored the men as she went about her work, assuming that they had found their way aboard already, and returned her attention to them when she was done. She turned her back to make sure the three were aboard and ready. Impatient and hoping she could fish as well, Gabrielle gave Damias a final look and a wry smile before pushing off dock.

A few minutes away from the shore, her ship was still slow and gathering up speed, but the breeze was strong enough to feel good against her face. She smiled to herself, feeling at home when she was at sea. Her previous negative expressions were gone, and she could care less that there were strangers on her ship.

She looked at Damias again, whom by now she knew was the leader of the three. "Please be careful not to fall overboard. It would be much better if you three just sit down for the time being, especially if any of you don't know how to swim. And even if you did, the water is icy cold, so I suggest you don't even try. I know a fishing spot about half an hour away... you three should find it sufficient, I hope."

oocSorry for taking control a bit and assuming they got on-board, will change if needed!

OoCNo worries, you are doing just fine!

Jase eyed the small casinor, unconvinced. "This is what we are going to be fishing in?" He said incredulously. "Couldn't we get something - I don't know - bigger?"

Damias paused halfway up the boat ladder, twisting around to throw a black look at his companion. "Don't be a brat," He hissed. "You're the one who pissed off the only other sailor who would have taken us out, remember? It's not like we have any other choice. Besides," Damias paused to sneak a furtive look at their captain, "It's not like everything on this boat is bad, right?"

Jase rolled his eyes. He boarded the boat all the same, waddling unsteadily onto the deck. It took a bit more work to lug Erikur on, but before long all three youths were on the ship. And then - they were off.

Damias gave Gabrielle a smile in return when she warned him about not falling overboard. "Don't worry, love, we've done this before. We know well to stay away from the edges." Damias incongruously pushed away Erikur from the railing as he said so. "You say a half an hour away...Well, that sounds rum and all, but that's quite a long way. Why don't we talk a bit, to clear the air? How do you keep this ship going, for example?"

Damias pointed to the sails. "How do you know which to use, and how to get the most out of them?" He asked, curious.

Munus Muneris [Gabrielle Seawind]

Gabrielle scrunched her nose everytime she accidentally glanced at the man named Jase. She didn't appreciate his earlier comment, but had said nothing about it, choosing to ignore it. 'My casinor is the perfect fit for me... he can take it or leave it.'

To Gabrielle, after a life in sea, thirty minutes of sailing was not a long way. She understood Damias's words though, and decided to answer his questions. One of the things she enjoyed talking about, even to a stranger, was sailing.

"It's pretty basic," replied Gabrielle, her lips curving into a slight smile. She pointed towards the sails and various other places onboard, naming them as she went. "All you really have to know is how to use the wind. The sails can be positioned, and each position has its own purpose. See, fortunately, where we're going is also where the wind is directed to... and if we place the sails this way," she pointed towards the sails and put up her hands to mimic their positions using two fingers. "Then my casinor's practically just riding with the wind.

Gabrielle continued to ramble about sailing and how the wind played an important role. Having no wind, or close to now wind, meant that you might not go anywhere. She said that she knew that some people made use of the ocean's current to get their ships moving, but Gabrielle hadn't mastered that yet; nor did she have to because since her casinor was light, it didn't have much trouble sailing with what was usually available.

"If on our way back the wind's direction stays the same, then I'll need to reposition the sails to this..." she moved her fingers and demonstrated what the sails would look like. "We'd go on a slower pace, though. Having the sea wind on your side is always the best."

Gabrielle grinned to herself. It was a common saying in her pod that having the sea wind, or the Seawinds, on your side was always for the better. She looked ahead and saw that they really were making good time. The fishing spot they were headed to was near the shores, and it was marked by a huge rock which peeked its way out of the waters. Gabrielle had gone fishing there weeks before, and she knew that there was rich marine life by that rock. Roughly another ten minutes passed until Gabrielle decided to lower her sails. The rock she used as a landmark was nearby, and its visible part was about as large as her casinor. Another boat with people leisurely fishing was also present -- that had been her other landmark. This place was quite popular among the fishermen.

"I'm not going to drop an anchor, that would destroy the corals... and I won't do that," said Gabrielle. The casinor swayed lightly with the waves, and it was probably going to move some feet -- but Gabrielle was adamant on not destroying the sea. It would be a crime against Laviku. She pointed at the right side of the ship, where the water was darker. "It suddenly goes deep here, so it would probably be a better place to start..."

Damias smiled and nodded his head. "I see," Was all that he said, although he paid close attention to her ramble on about sailing.

The other two companions milled around the boat as Gabrielle kept talking, not listening to her. Jase was suspiciously watching the rigging for any sort of break, while Erikur was busy daydreaming about how good the fish they would catch would taste. Nevermind that this was his first time out at sea.

When they arrived at the fishing spot, however, they queued up against the side of the ship that Gabrielle recommended they start on. Damias's brow furrowed when he heard that Gabrielle wouldn't drop anchor, but he as well as his two companions began fishing eagerly. After about ten minutes, however, it was clear that nothing was biting.

"All the fish have been scared away," Jase complained, reeling in his line when it got caught on seaweed for the third time. Unlike Erikur, he was an old hand at fishing, and it was clear this was not up to his standards. "It's all the people here. This place is too popular, we need somewhere more secluded if we're going to fish elsewhere."

Damias looked sideways at Gabrielle. "Maybe if we went further in...?" He suggested. Further into the Suvan Sea he meant, where their would be less people and, presumably, more fish.

But going out there had dangers of it's own. Sailors had flooded the Syliras harbor recently speaking of a huge storm headed their way. If Gabrielle went out into the Suvan Sea and the storm came her way, she might not have been able to get back to shore quick enough. On the other hand, if she stayed where she was, she might upset her three passengers...

She had noticed that they were not catching anything, and that they were probably right -- the place was too popular. The Svefra only had vague knowledge about how to find fishing spots on her own, though, but she didn't want to tell her employers that. Gabrielle just strongly hoped that luck would be on her side.

Aside from that, she knew that a storm was on its way. Gabrielle scrunched her nose and looked to the horizon, her face obviously worried. "We can go somewhere more quiet, but we can't go that far in though, alright?" she said to Damias as she moved to drop and position her sails. "I hope you understand," continued Gabrielle with a smile as she steered the helm towards the deep sea.

It was apparent that the Svefra was being careful, because she refused to let the shore get out of her sight. She looked in the distance and observed the sea current, knowing that they had to rush back at the first sign that the storm was near. After some minutes, the coast could still be seen in the horizon, but the water's color said they were deep enough.

"Care to try again?" said Gabrielle to the men as she lowered her sails for the second time. The casinor swayed gently with the tides, but she had no deep sea anchor to drop. She never really had any reason to get one -- one didn't spend her nights alone in the deep sea, it was too dangerous.

She spotted a fish jumping in the air a few yards away, and gave a sigh of relief that she hoped the men didn't sea. There were fish!

Damias' and Erikur's faces both lit up with excitement when the fish was spotted. Even Jase looked fractionally less moody. All three of them grabbed their fishing poles and headed to the side on which the fish had been spotted. There was a litany of lines plunging into water as they began to fish.

After several moments, the first couple of fish had been reeled in. They - called "bluefin tuna", according to Jase - were long, dark-blue and had rather short fins, and, judging by the men's expression, a good catch. Damias beamed at Gabrielle more than once, mostly when he reeled in a nice big fish, which happened more than once.

It seemed she had picked a good spot after all.

After several chimes, the fish were still as plentiful as ever. Even while Jase (and Erikur, to a lesser degree) kept reeling them in, Damias stood up and grabbed one of the spare fishing rods they had brought. "Wanna fish?" he offered it to Gabrielle, a smile on his face.

Around her, the sea was still as calm as ever. A storm, if it had ever existed, seemed far off; it wouldn't be the first time the oft-twitchy sailors were wrong about the sea. Laviku was well-known for being unpredictable, and it seemed instead of a storm he had brought calm waves. And fish. Plenty of fish.

"C'mon, you know you want to..." The noble prodded, his grin as salacious as ever.

Gabrielle couldn't help but smile to herself as she saw the improvement in the moods of her three passengers. Leaning over the ledge of her casinor, she watched them reel in a good amount of fish, her eyes bright with excitement. The tuna that they were bringing in looked healthy and grown.

When Damias spoke to her, Gabrielle looked back at him with surprise. She had not expected him to offer to let her join in their leisure. The Svefra had half a mind to decline, but soon enough she responded with a wide grin and a grateful expression. She took the rod in her hand and hurriedly tried her luck at fishing.

Fishing was a common past time among the Svefra, and she more or less knew how to do so. Gabrielle didn't know if it was because the basic knowledge she had was enough, or because it was simply an excellent fishing spot, but she was also able to reel in a good looking bluefin tuna without much trouble.

She focused at the task at hand, though she also kept her senses keen on her surroundings. Quietly, she thanked Laviku for calming the seas that day. The storm that was spoken about didn’t seem to be coming. Gabrielle grinned as she reeled in yet another tuna, albeit it was smaller than the first one.

The Svefra observed that her passengers seemed to be experienced in what they were doing. Curiously, she glanced at Damias and asked, “Do you and your friends do this a lot?”

Gabrielle had been in Syliras for some time now, and while it wasn’t the first time she was approached by a stranger offering a job, it had been the first time she had seen Damias. She wondered how they had gone out to sea before. Gabrielle had no idea how long they normally stayed out in sea as well, but as long as the waters were kind, then she would only head back the moment they would ask.

Munus Muneris [Gabrielle Seawind]

Postby Trident on January 5th, 2012, 10:50 pm

There was a sudden change in the water after Gabby reeled in her first tuna. For several moments, it was silent beyond the breaking of waves against the ship; the fish were all but gone, and there was no more cries of glee and the reeling of lines.

The air changed, getting colder and moody; Erikur shivered in the increased breeze, and Jase was forced back a bit by the gales. Damias, for his part, was completely pale. He ignored Gabrielle's spoken question; instead, with a trembling finger, he pointed over her shoulder to the northwest.

"Look," he squeaked.

Turning would provide Gabrielle with a view of roiling thunderclouds, steadily approaching. Tendrils of black cloud stretched out far above her, and faintly one could hear the fierce splatter of rain on water. The storm seemed almost malevolent in a way, appearing out of nowhere to threaten the small casinor with lightning and rain.

Distracted by fishing, Gabrielle had not been able to notice the storm until now. It was close by this time, and only quick and clever steering would enable her to escape from it. But there was a sudden gust of wind and a sudden loud splash. Erikur had been standing by the edge, looking up into the storm with fear on his face; and now he was gone.

There was a cry of help from the other side of the ship, and fierce thrashing in the water below. Someone didn't know how to swim...

...Could this situation get any worse?

Munus Muneris [Gabrielle Seawind]

Shocked, Gabrielle tossed the fishing rod aside, her eyes burning with panic. She cursed herself -- this was entirely her fault! She was the captain of the ship, the only sailor, and she had failed to keep an eye out on the weather. To make matters worse, one of her passengers had fallen overboard, and he obviously couldn't swim.

The casinor shook, the storm fast approaching. She knew the last thing she could do was leave Erikur behind, and she had to act quick. Gabrielle rushed to the other side of the casinor and dove into the water. She was a Svefra and she had been swimming all her life, and she used all her energy to reach Erikur and grab him by the collar. As quick as she could, she swam back to the ship with Erikur in tow, wishing he wouldn't panic too much; a person who couldn't swim and who panicked at the same time was a dead weight. She tried her best though, using all her strength.

"Grab hold! Help us up!" she yelled at those who had been left onboard, waiting for them to help Erikur back onboard. Struggling, she heaved herself back on the ship, let loose the sails and ran to the helm. Quickly, she steered and made for land, hoping they could outrun the storm. ”Laviku, please guide us to safety...” she whispered under her breath.

She wondered if Erikur was alright as well. She had waited for him to be pulled onboard before she had climbed up, but she hadn’t really gotten a good look at him. Hopefully, he hadn’t swallowed too much water in his struggle.

Gabrielle kept her focus on her steering, her eyes sharp on the approaching storm clouds. The waters were becoming more violent, but they probably had a good chance of outrunning the storm.
