The Warfields Sprawled against the outer side of the Northern Wall, the Warfields are a tall stone maze made to mimic the narrow and tortuous streets of Nyka. Consisting of the same reddish stone from which the city is made, it stands just above the height of the tallest Nykan. The stone may seem faded and in disrepair due to its exposure to the elements, but it serves perfectly as an extensive training ground for urban warfare. A few choice trees and other landmarks dot the otherwise monochrome field, but since they often serve as meeting points for rivals, they are bruised and crippled with the marks of past encounters. The chaotic design is meant to challenge both the strength and wits of all who enter it, be they monks, civilians, or the occasional beast. Anyone is allowed in, as long as they think they can get out again. It is the duty of the Uphis monks to keep the place clean and reasonably civil, to patrol the area and remove any dangerous specimens that may stumble in. Depending on the individual, a monk may help protect an innocent who has underestimated the maze, or challenge a fighter who turned a wrong corner. Though honest sport and exercise are expected here, these winding corridors have few rules. A monk or other brave individual may practice alone or in groups, with any weapon or intention. It is not uncommon to spot a good climber darting over the walls from above, or to find the rosy stone painted red. Nonetheless, almost all of those who would use this area do so mainly to train. Though it is not illegal, to kill an opponent in the Warfields is considered duplicitous and crude, without the mode and audience for a proper duel. |
