Winter
Day 75
511 AV

The Crystal Hall was a place for activity. Vantha gathered from every hold for special occasions and many floated through the location at other times. At the center of Avanthal, the Crystal Hall could not be missed. With three stories, the Vantha were normally on the first level. The second was used for celebrations. The bottom level was used for meetings between the hold leaders. The building is the pride of the Iceglaze Hold, who built anything from houses to furniture. The Crystal Hall was beautifully crafted.

Lixue enjoyed visiting the Crystal Hall. To do was an easy way to meet new people and make a name of herself. The individuals she made friends with were more likely to visit Lixue if they had an injury of any sort.

Besides, Lixue's mother and father had been trying to find her a husband for two years. Two more years and Lixue would be considered "hopeless" or an "ice-maiden". Not something Lixue would be fond of as a nickname. Then again, not a nickname anybody in their right mind would have loved.

This was the reason Lixue visited the Crystal Hall today. To see if she could dive into the world of eligible bachelors. The chances were unlikely considering her almost shy temperament. Either way, Lixue had promised her mother, Natal, she would meet at least one person of the opposite gender today.

To be truthful, Lixue went to the Crystal Hall for the beautiful, breathtaking views more than the prospects of a future husband. After all, she still had two more years.

The weather was average for a winter in Avanthal. Snow blanketed the ground in high mounds. Lixue did not feel the cold, a gift from Morwen herself, but could imagine. Anyone without the mark of Morwen would have either stayed inside or covered themselves in so many furs they would not have been visible. Perhaps frostbite would have kicked in.

The idea was both entertaining and painful to Lixue. Frostbite froze the skin tissues, starting at the appendages farthest from the heart. Lixue could only imagine how excruciatingly agonizing it would be to un-freeze the dead limbs. In the same retrospect, the idea was amusing to Lixue. She had lived her entire life in Avanthal and had the mark since birth, along with nearly all the individuals in the city. To see someone cold would be an odd thing indeed.

With this in mind, Lixue limped near the Crystal Hall winding steps, cane in hand.

Too Chilly [[Alea]]

Postby Alea Davenport on February 23rd, 2012, 2:57 am

Why did Alea love to torture herself? She should be staying inside, wrapped in blankets and drinking warm beverages, or maybe working in the stables where the warmth of the animals and the physical labor would keep her warm. But no, she was a traveler, and a traveler had to see the sights. She only had a short while until spring, and in spring she intended to move on from Avanthal, so it was her last chance to see anything in the city for a long time. Today, something had compelled her, against her better judgement, to visit the Crystal Hall, that eye-catching structure that she passed by nearly every time she went into town.

She groaned at the prospect of climbing all those steps, but it was either that, or stay out in this bitter cold. Wrapping her two wool cloaks more tightly around herself, and pulling her hoods down to shield her face from the wind, she raced up the steps as quickly as she could. Unfortunately, she was not paying particular attention to her surroundings, and she bumped into someone. "Sorry!" she said quickly, running past and hoping the person would forgive her. But then she heard a clatter and a thud. Alea may be willing to let manners slide for bumping into someone, but even she knew that knocking them down was bad.

Almost wanting to cry from being kept out in the cold, but knowing the tears would freeze on her face, Alea turned around and walked to the person she'd knocked over. "I'm s-sorry," she said through chattering teeth. Through the narrow gap in her hoods, Alea could see that the woman she'd knocked over appeared to be Vantha, and apart from having been knocked over, she seemed perfectly fine.... This led Alea to exclaim, "WHY AREN'T YOU FREEZING!?" For the Vantha woman was dressed in nothing warmer than a light jacket. Not wanting to have that discussion at this temperature, she helped the woman up, and together they ascended the stairs into the warmth of the Crystal Hall.

Lixue was perplexed. Where did this young woman come from? One moment she was making her way, slowly, up the steps and the next… The next Lixue was on the ground with someone screaming at her. The cane Lixue used for walking had fallen several steps down and with a weary sigh, as this had happened before, she leaned down to clasp it tightly in one hand.

Though she had managed not to land on her right knee, it still throbbed from the unexpected tumble. Ignoring; this, Lixue reached for the woman's hand with her left and nearly retracted; it was practically freezing! Surprise made her eyes widen marginally. How in Mizahar could the young lady be so cold?

The weather had a definite effect on the other person. Within chimes, Alea had helped herself and Lixue into the Crystal Hall. The inside of the halls were wonderful. The main story itself was full of windows and people alike. Conversations hummed around the room, lyrical and dramatic. Very few gave Lixue a second glance but those who did received a friendly smile. For a tick, Lixue had forgotten about the female beside her and how she had exclaimed noisily earlier. Knowing there was no time like the present, she turned to face Alea.

A quick study revealed the 'woman' Lixue had thought her to be, was in fact barely over adolescence. This showed in her face, where the eyes of a traveler lay. They virtually glowed with excitement and hunger. Skinny and, if Lixue had to guess, not too much more than herself, pale. If she couldn't already tell from the hurried question yelled earlier, Lixue knew right then this was not an Avanthal commoner. A trace of foreign still clung to Alea in ways such as her voice and her skin; freezing. Morwen loved her children, the Vantha, and often marked them.

Leaving only three options as to why the child was chilly, Lixue tried to logically think them through. Alea did not worship Morwen. Lixue had yet to meet a Vantha who did not worship Morwen in some way. A preposterous idea. On the other hand, the young lady did not seem to originate from Avanthal. The idea was not longer so strange. Perhaps the blonde haired girl loved other gods or goddesses? What if the person opposite her had not heard of Morwen?

Another option was that Alea had done something to upset Morwen. The goddess did not come off as the kindest or most caring, but Lixue had yet to hear of her turning away someone. Dismissing the notion, Lixue went on to think of the next concept.

The teenager had yet to meet Morwen. The goddess had departed from Avanthal during the end of the fall season, to spread winter throughout Mizahar. Being a visitor, she might not be aware of this fact and had traveled to the wonderful city to meet the ice queen only to find her elsewhere. Thus, the girl could not try for the mark of Morwen.

The last option made the most sense, but Lixue was aware she would not know the true reason unless she asked. Deciding common would be the language the girl would most likely understand best, Lixue fluently questioned, "Could you repeat what you had asked earlier? I did not quite catch it." An apologetic smile.

The warmth of the Crystal hall was like an omnipresent blanket that covered Alea when she stepped inside. She barely noticed the beautiful architecture or the multitude of Vantha as she rubbed her arms furiously, trying to work the warmth in as fast as possible. After a few moments, she was still cold, but much improved, and she had a bit of attention to spare when the woman she'd knocked down asked her a question.

"What? Oh," she said in Denvali accented Common. "I just wanted to know why you're not cold. It's freezing out there and you're not exactly dressed for the weather." Alea moved away from the door and sat down on a nearby chair, inviting the woman to join her. It occurred to her that despite her plan to see the world and learn about all the different races of Mizahar, she hadn't actually spent much time learning about the Vantha. She'd been here a season already, and was making plans to travel in the Spring, so this might be her last chance to interview one of them.

Alea rubbed her nose and ears, trying to recall to them what having warm blood flowing through them was like. Her hands weren't much warmer though, so after a few moments she gave up and waited for the warm atmosphere to work its magic. "My name is Alea, by the way. Alea Davenport." She held out a hand which was now starting to regain feeling with a sensation like burning pins.

Lixue smiled. It was not a laughing smile, or a superior one. No, it was a smile of understanding and warmth. One that invited the other girl to ask more questions and receive truthful answers. Instead of outright answering, Lixue simply questioned, "Have you heard of Morwen?" To not know of the goddess seemed almost impossible to someone who lived in Avanthal, but perhaps the traveler had not. Anything was possible, after all.

Following the girl without hesitation, Lixue limped towards the chair. Her cane clacked, clacked! on the floor sharply. Using her hand to sit down, she rested the cane against her damaged leg. Assuming the girl had answered, she moved on in the explanation, "Morwen is the goddess that lives in Avanthal. Winter and ice are controlled by her. Currently, since it is winter, she is away from the city. This is because she travels around Mizahar and spreads the cold. Her palace is in the center of the city. You have probably seen it. The building is huge." Realizing she had yet to answer Alea's question, she slid that into the explanation smoothly, "I am not cold because of Morwen. She loves her people and we love her. Unless it is a rare occasion, children are blessed with a mark from the goddess. This allows us to tolerate the cold, even embrace it. Alongside of that, we can control ice to a certain degree." Lixue fell silent, in case the girl had more questions concerning Morwen.

Someone across the room beckoned to Lixue. Turning to Alea, she murmured, "I'll be right back. If you'll excuse me." Within ticks, the dark haired was out of sight. The person who had beckoned her was a friend. The pair had known each other since they were in nappies, often creating trouble and chaos when young. The more outgoing of the pair was, without a doubt, Ly. Lixue was seen as the person who held him back from his pranks or kept him from figuratively crossing the line.

Ly stood at a surprising height of five feet nine. More than a whole foot taller than Lixue! She was unsure of his weight, but he did not seem pudgy or too skinny. Perhaps average? His black hair was littered with dark purple highlights. His long hair was braided into a tight bun-like circle on the back of his head. To Lixue, this seemed very stern compared to his easygoing personality. Ly originated from the Frostfawn hold and dealt with animals all day.

Upon seeing Lixue, Ly's eyes turned a color that matched his highlights. She had started to see the mixture more and more often, lately. It always seemed to be whenever she popped up out of nowhere. Perhaps the shade meant… surprise? She was unsure and did not feel the need to pry. Once she did about an eye shade and his olive complexion turned red.

"Hey, kid, what are you doing in these parts?"
Even though Ly was only a year older than her, he called her "kid" or similar nicknames. Reaching out with a calloused hand, he mussed her hair. "You chopped it off? When?"

Rolling her green eyes, Lixue swatted his hand away. "Quite awhile ago. Way to be observant." The vani seemed broken. Shifting her weight onto her cane, Lixue kept talking, "Mum sent me. You know how she is. Two more years and all that good stuff." Craning her neck to see if Alea was where she had left her, Lixue missed the quick flash of color in Ly's eyes. By the time she had turned back around, it was gone. "I could ask you the same question, actually."

A smile curved his lips. "Had a few bells off from work. Decided to scope the ladies!" Mocking, he bugged his eyes and dramatically glanced around. It was a running joke between them to see which would be married first. Ly claimed he found marriage stifling; Lixue was too shy to go after a guy. "Who was that you were talking to?" The too-interested tone raised Lixue's dark eyebrows.

"No one you should worry about." Childishly sticking out her tongue at him, her eyes sparkled. "I do have to get back to her, though." When Lixue went to move past him, Ly stepped in her path. She tapped at his leg with her cane and arched an eyebrow. "Would you like an introduction, hm? Come along, then, overgrown lost puppy." Laughing, Lixue made her way back towards Alea, Ly on her heels.

Too Chilly [[Alea]]

Postby Alea Davenport on March 24th, 2012, 1:40 am

Alea knew a little about Morwen, so she sat a bit impatiently, waiting for the woman to hurry up and tell her something she didn't know. Then she got to the part about the mark from Morwen. Alea's jaw dropped in disbelief. That was cheating! So all Alea had to do to stop freezing her face off was march into Morwen's palace and... but wait, it was just established that Morwen is gone for the winter. The coldest part of the year in the coldest city on mizahar was when the goddess of ice and winter decided to make herself scarce, so that poor freezing little girls just had to suffer? The fair side of her brain realized that Morwen probably had reasons for doing things the way she did, but the cold part of her didn't care at the moment.

While Alea was contemplating the injustice of her particular situation, the woman had gone off to socialize with some other Vantha. Alea wasn't sure what to do about that. Should she follow, or would she just be imposing? She didn't know anyone else here, and they all seemed to be engaged in conversation anyway. It felt like it would be rude - and worse, pointless - to insert herself into someone else's conversation. If she just left, that would mean going back out into that horrible cold, and she just was not ready for that yet. She had half-stood up, agonizing over whether to follow her new acquaintance or go hide somewhere.

Fortunately, the decision was made for her. Before long, the woman was returning to where Alea sat, with a man in tow. She stared at the two with open confusion on her face. She had never felt this awkward before in her entire life. In an attempt to regain at least some control of this situation, she stiffly held out her hand to the newcomer and said, "My name is Alea Davenport. It's nice to meet you."

Lixue watched with a feeling of apprehension, wondering what Ly was going to do. The boy loved to be overly dramatic and she could not help but feel slightly amused. For once, Lixue was not on the receiving end of the unnecessary actions! To say she felt relieved, was putting it lightly.

A strange, unknown, feeling was enveloping her. Lixue wasn't sure what it was. The color of blood seeped into her green eyes, barely noticeable. She would be surprised if either made note of the change. The feeling was akin to a tightening in her chest as if someone was gripping it tighter than need be. It could also be described as wanting to be in the girl's place, though Lixue could not figure out why. So what if Ly was paying attention to someone else for once? She couldn't take up all of his time! The girl was new and Lixue had already expected him to hit on Alea, who looked terribly confused. Hopefully he would not terrify her!

Ly, instead of shaking Alea's hand, cupped it in his own and leaned down to lay a polite kiss upon it before straightening again. His green eyes twinkled with amusement. The vani accent left his words close together and slightly husky, "'Ello, Alea Davenport. My name is Ly of the Frostfawn Hold. You have wonderful hair. Tell me, for I am interested, have you ever considered braiding it? Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous! You also have such magnificent hands. Do you work with animals?"

He had removed his hands and placed them in his pockets before exuberantly asking in common, "Where do you hail from, Alea Davenport? I wish to know if a place exists that breeds such beautiful women!" In the background, Lixue slapped a hand to her forehead as the amusement fled. She had known Ly was going to try and be appealing and charismatic, but had not known he would go so far. Did Alea even know any Vani words; enough to understand him? Or would all she hear is her name and exclamations popping from the boy's mouth?

Unconsciously scrunching her nose, Lixue gave Ly's shoulder a harder than necessary shove. A warning tone seeped into her voice as she reprimanded him in common, "Go sit in an ice-bank, lover boy." A pause as Lixue readjusted her cane, then, "I am certain Alea Davenport does not want your slobber." Was she jealous? The tone might have given the stranger that idea, but Lixue herself was unaware of it. Rolling green eyes, that held a hint of red, in exasperation when Ly simply gave a completely innocent look, the healer forced herself to be patient.

Causing a scene in a public place would not be a good idea. At all. Swallowing the strange reaction and addressing Alea, she asked, "Do you want to continue where we left off? Ly might not seem like it, but he could be helpful in things I may not know."

Too Chilly [[Alea]]

Postby Alea Davenport on March 28th, 2012, 2:00 am

Alea cringed a little when the Vantha man kissed her hand. While the man wasn't looking, she shot a desperate looked toward Lixue, trying to communicate that she was extremely confused and had no idea how to respond. She wanted to ask Lixue if this also was a Vantha thing, but she didn't get a chance, because the man started prattling in Vani.

He considerately switched to Common at some point, but his last statement left her mind reeling. It felt like....there was something wrong with his statement; it somehow seemed incongruous with what her mind knew. But it took her a few moments to place the thought. She was so busy thinking that she did not hear a word her new Vantha friend said, but once she had belatedly remembered what was wrong with Ly's statement, she began to cackle uncontrollably.

Alea's mirth was loud, and she had trouble getting it to stop. After she sunk to the floor because the intensity of her cackling made it hard to support herself, she finally managed to at least lower the volume so that the entire room was not looking at her. After several chimes, the fit faded to giggles and finally subsided, and she was able to stand. Wiping the tears of laughter from her eyes, she said quietly, still grinning, "Sorry, it's just that a friend once told me he wouldn't wish Denval's women on anyone." Upon reflection, that friend was probably referring to her specifically. All the more reason for this man to not get involved with her, she thought with a pang of what she convinced herself was humor.

Too Chilly [[Alea]]

Postby Lixue on March 29th, 2012, 8:32 pm

For a long moment, as she awkwardly watched the woman laugh, Lixue wondered if Alea was insane. Or mentally deranged. Perhaps something either Ly or herself had set off the laughing fit? Thinking back, however… Nothing either had said would have come off as hilarious.

Unless Alea was giggling at Ly? The action was somewhat understandable. The boy had made a fool out of himself and seemed to have no remorse for the unexpected actions. To cackle as such out of amusement at someone's behavior seemed rude. Alea did not come off as rude, so perhaps it was something else entirely? The possibilities made Lixue's mind swirl like a snow-storm. Upon mentally shaking her head, she settled with giving Alea a worried look.

Ly seemed to not know what to do either. He stood next to Lixue and, she noticed, a hand was settled casually upon her waist; fingers absentmindedly pinching the fabric of the white blouse that was peeking out from under her jacket. The movement was so normal for the pair it had caused Lixue to not even notice. Perhaps Alea had? What type of judgments would she have made of the two? A couple?

Lixue was not interested in him romantically and, for all she knew, Ly reciprocated the friendly feelings. The real question is not of whether they would get along as a couple, but whether or not the two could move past friends.

Ly was boisterous, loud, and outgoing. Lixue was outgoing, but in an opposite way. Instead of holding a dozen different conversations at once, she preferred to talk with someone one on one. Ly was memorable by his over-the-top actions. Unless the person had a wonderful memory, soon Lixue would fade from it. Ly overlooked details and Lixue picked up after him, tucking in the corners. Ideas of all sorts came from both of them, but tended to be separated by polar opinions. Helpful and giving were hers, while his tended to be general and out there. Perhaps they were too different to be the same? Or would Alea believe opposites attracted? Either way, the first impression was not always the best; she did not know either of them.

The boy had leaned forwards. His attention was focused intently on her eyes. Somewhat thick eyebrows were pulled together and his own orbs were nearly the same shade as his skin. "Denval…" The word rolled off his tongue, lyrical and confused. "People in Denval do not..?" Trailing off, his head turned to peer at Lixue with a silent question.

"No, Ly," sounded from the lady in Vani. When he turned back around, white had seeped into the irises. "Scoot back, please. We really do not need you frightening her and her inflicting harm upon you." Teasing, light, airy and in a totally different language. Muttering under her breath in the Avanthal language, Lixue jerkily ran a hand through her hair, "One would think you were going to kiss her or something…" Ly had thankfully not heard; he might have taken her up on the offer.

The white was literally swirling in his eyes, slowly disappearing into the brown. Still clutching Alea's shoulders in calloused hands, he demanded, "Explain." Explain what was the question.

Too Chilly [[Alea]]

Postby Alea Davenport on March 30th, 2012, 12:37 am

Still stifling her laughter, Alea raised her eyebrows as Ly looked at her intently, apparently believing that she would make sense if he stared hard enough. His stare made her a bit uncomfortable, but she responded by looking back into his eyes just as steadily. She noticed with some surprise that his eyes were a near-perfect match with his skin color. That seemed like the kind of thing she would have noticed before, but then again, she was sure there was plenty she missed, due to it not being important at the time.

As he tried to form a question, Alea giggled, somewhat maliciously, at his confusion. If Ly did not currently understand why people were reluctant to have her around, he probably soon would. She had managed to compose herself by the time he turned back to her, but this time she saw something which made her entirely forget whatever she had been laughing about. His eyes... they were no longer quite the cinnamon shade they had been a moment ago. There was a milky color swirling in them, in a way that reminded Alea of a beverage she had once had, hot cocoa... it was definitely his eyes, and not her earnest wish for a warm beverage, that made her think of this. As she stared, the white disappeared into the brown like milk disappearing into cocoa, until she wasn't quite sure she'd seen anything at all. But no, surely her eyes would not deceive her that badly.

Ly was demanding an explanation of Alea's comment, but now Alea wanted explanations of her own. Almost out of habit (as the man had hardly earned the right to restrain her like this), she wrenched her shoulders from the Ly's grip. Turning to Lixue, she demanded, "What is wrong with his eyes? They are brown now, but a moment ago, I'm sure they were white."
