Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Kavala finished her chores early and had Tasi slung in a babypack (which he was fast outgrowing) as she lead Sivak out into the arena. She had an appointment today with one of Riverfall's Akalaks to learn a bit of riding and horsemanship so she thought she'd use the big Semele stallion not knowing how large the akalak was nor how nervous or comfortable they might be around horses. Sivak was a large animal, almost 18 hands and could carry multiple riders or a very large one and was broke to both ride and drive.

Kavala made sure she had a traditional saddle hanging over the rails, a yvas, and only had the stallion 'captured' by her voice alone. Otherwise he was free to roam the arena and do what he liked. Laying over the saddle was a bit and bridle, a halter and lead, and sitting on the ground was a bucket full of grooming tools.

Kavala would go over everything she knew to go over with him about the very basics of horse care and then riding starting from grooming and moving up along into tacking a horse up, mounting, and getting them to move. She'd talk about the importance of seat, emergency dismounts, and a whole host of other things.

Now, ready, all she needed was a client.

Ride With The Winds

Postby Rykanis Dakshata on March 31st, 2012, 5:31 pm

Rykanis had decided it was about time he learned to ride a horse. He had left Riverfall before, but mostly walking, or going along with caravans... It tended to be rather slow... But if he knew how to ride a horse, he would be able to go much faster!

He was not planning in the very near future to get a horse, or to leave the city, but perhaps once he again had a bit more money saved up, he would. And being able to ride a horse would speed up his adventures quite a bit.

So he had made an appointment with a local animal... Place... He knew they healed animals, and sold them, but was not exactly sure what to call the place.

That is until his other side reminded him it was called a "sanctuary." Though was that the name of the place, specifically, or the name of a more general such place for animals? He would have to remember to ask.

Coming up to the area, Rykanis enjoyed the architecture for a bit, before finally taking the time to figure out were he was supposed to be meeting at. After a bit he got it all figured, and met on some kind of open area were he assumed riding lessons took place.

He greeted the woman while waving his hand to get her attention, still having his main side in control, who was a bit more exuberant.

"Hello, I am Rykanis! I am here to take a riding lesson. I suppose we should just start... I am not really sure were though... I don't really know much about horses, but am ready to learn."

Kavala smiled, and beckoned the Akalak into the arena with them. "It's nice to meet you Rykanis. I'm Kavala, and this boy here is Sivak. He's going to teach you a bit of riding and horsemanship." Kavala said, shaking the Akalaks' hand and then turning to the stallion to unfasten the halter on him. She clucked and sent the stallion off at a trot away from them just to let the Akalak get some idea of how the horse moved and what normal calm horse behavior looked like. The stallion, which was a deep chocolate brown with an overabundance of blond mane and tail danced off snorting, kicked a little and then bucked before he galloped hard around the arena, nickered and slowed to a stop tossing his head.

"He's showing off for you. He wants you to see how strong and beautiful he is. Sivak's a bit vain, I'm afraid." She said, handing him the halter. "This is called a halter. I'm going to teach you how to properly catch a horse, halter him and then lead him around. Then, we'll talk about grooming a bit, using a saddle, bridle, even a yvas - its whatever you prefer - and then we'll do a bit of riding and see how you do. Are you ready to start?" She asked, curious as to his reaction towards the stallion as the big horse frolicked around the arena, knowing his antics were just procrastinating work that was going to be done.

Ride With The Winds

Postby Rykanis Dakshata on June 5th, 2012, 1:10 pm

Kavala... Rykanis worked the word a few times in his mind, devoting it to memory... It was good to have names to use... Especially when the faces attached to them were not to bad to look at... Plus, it was always nice to meet a konti...

Which he was fairly certain she was. He had taken an interest in there race, ever since he lost his own mother, who was one... Maybe some day he would meet someone who had known her...

She had called the horse a "boy"... Well he supposed he was not yet grown then? Sivak... He would commit that to memory also... Though he did so with less gusto than the konti.

Rykanis returned the handshake, not too firm, but firm enough to be a good one, and to not make her think he believed he had to be softer to woman. She seemed to be doing well, and deserved respect for working, and making this place work.

He watched as the horse moved... Always thought there was something odd about there legs... There motion... The way they... Surely there was something there that he could learn, perhaps to use in wielding more than one weapon... But he was not sure what... But it was interesting regardless... He supposed it was odd though, for his focus to be on the legs, and not the entire horse...

Rykanis simply smiled when Kavala said the horse was vain. What an interesting quirk to a horse... He took the "halter" as she called it, and walked over close to the horses head. He brushed one hand along its head, and down its neck, smiling at it, seeming to talk to the horse, using a nice happy tone. If nothing else, he figured the horse could understand his tone, if not his words.

"Well of course he is vain, he is a very nice horse. I could think of none better to ride, and to be my first horse to learn to ride on."

This of course was true... Though only in a roundabout way... Since Rykanis did not really know any other horses... But still, he kept his smile on his face, as he looked at the horse. A smile did wonders to put people at ease, and to calm a situation. Usually...

As Kavala asked if he was ready, he darted his head back to her, taking his notice off of the horse, as if she had shouted at him... In truth, his other side had, pestering him to pay attention to the konti, and telling him what the woman had just said, and he had not noticed so focused on the horse...

"Sure, I am ready when you are! That all sounds fine. You are the teacher here. So... A halter... What exactly does that do?"

He did wonder a bit, as his other side told him of all she had planned for the lesson... My, he had not known there was so much to riding a horse!

Kavala smiled at him. No them. She was wary around Akalaks, truth be told, because so much had happened. Her Nakivak status made her uneasy and so too did the fact that her Talvis was missing. But with all that said, there were great Akalaks in the city, ones she'd formed friendships with like Lars Varkas and the barkeeper at The Blue Bull. Perhaps this one was another such potential contact.

She moved to Rykanis, stood beside him and quickly showed him how the halter was fastened. Standing beside the big stallion, she took the halter from the Akalak to demonstrate, tossing the leadrope around his neck gathering it up and effectively 'capturing' the stud. Then she held the nose band of the halter in her left hand and the long crown piece in her right hand and slipped halter over the horses' nose and slide the band over the back of his head behind his ears and buckled it. When he lifted his head too high, she simply said... "Down" and asked him to put his head down. He did so, where she could reach, and then she stepped back so Rhykanis could see the finished product.

Then, as quickly as before, she unfastened it for him, and then handed the whole thing to him, releasing the horse - who did not move off - to allow him to try it.

"Go on... see what you can do."
She said, smiling at the big Akalak, confident this step was easy enough to learn.

Then, when he'd haltered Sivak to her satisfaction, Kavala went on with the next lesson. "You'll need to know how to lead him. When you get the halter on, point in the direction you wish to go, hold his lead gently up under his chin with your right hand... giving a few inches of slack, and then hold the rest of the leadrope in your left hand. Then walk the direction you want to go. If you are armed with a sword, or other large weapon and its hanging from your belt on your right side, make sure you always lead and mount from the left." She said, carefully tapping his hip and without saying so painting a picture of him poking and prodding the horse unnecessarily with the weapon.

She let him lead the horse around the arena a few moments, moving first left then right and even backing him up - which she demonstrated by facing the horse and wiggling the leadrope with a 'back back' command - before she called a halt and showed him how to tie up a horse.

"Never tie with your bit and bridle. Always use a halter. A horse can pull back and cut its tongue off with the bit. That will cause it to bleed out and you'll loose it." She said, looking thoughtful. "Use a loose knot that will release when you pull - for safety. You might need to get your horse untied fast. You tie them like this." Kavala showed Rykanis how to tie the horse up with not much slack and a safe knot that she carefully showed him how to weave so it hung like a chain and just by one short tug on the end would release the animal.

"Go on give it a try. Once you get them tied up, I'll go over grooming, hoof care, and then we'll tack up and ride." she said, smiling at the Akalak encouragingly.

Ride With The Winds

Postby Rykanis Dakshata on November 9th, 2012, 6:35 pm

Rykanis watched as Kavala showed him through the motions and steps of putting on a halter... To be honest he did not completely understand what its purpose was, though from what she showed him, and he had observed, he gathered it had something to do with the neck or head... But he could not quite get how the two related.

He noted each step... Slipping the piece of the halter over its nose, some other part over behind its ears and around to clasp... He was interested as she said down to it, and it replied. Apparently it had been trained well enough, and was intelligent enough to note the word and at least differentiate it and know how to respond... He was not sure if it was smart enough to recognize the word or just the vague sound and tone... But he filed it away as useful information, on the capabilities of a horse... Could be a useful bit of info some day...

As she undid it and handed it to him, he nodded, and carefully approached the horse. This was more of something his other side was good at, and so Rykanis slowly slid back into his mentality, letting him take over. He was much better at such things as this, such by wrote and practiced things. To him, they were far to boring.

With a rather serious look on his face, his other side took over, and began to halter the horse... Doing exactly as he had seen Kavala do... Slipping the first bit over... Then the nose part along and over its nose... Bringing the part back behind its ears and connecting the connector or clasp or however it worked... Luckily for him being so tall, the horse raising its head a bit was not as big of a issue for him, and even when he raised his head as high as he had for Kavala to order him down, he could still teach.

With that done, perhaps a decent bit slower than Kavala had done, but he had accomplished it all the same. He looked back at Kavala a much more serious and neutral expression on his face, his voice much more even and bland and not so full of mirth or happiness as it had been before. Certainly a much colder expression and voice.

"How was that?"

Rykanis nodded as she gave orders for him to follow, the same blank look on his face as he intently listened and followed every word... The part about the lead rope... Bringing it under the chin, with just a bit of slack... Weapons away from it... Hold the rest with your other hand, and gently begin to walk off in the direction of your choosing. He quietly thought to himself that Rykanis would not have managed that, as he was far to impatient, and would have blazed off likely, or pulled to hard by accident. Sometimes his enthusiasm meant he got carried away. But Rykanis simply balked at that, claiming he would have done just fine.

As he pulled off and began walking at a gentle pace, the horse paused for a moment, and then finally began to carry on along with him... Walking just behind him and alongside. Simple really.

As they finished that bit, he followed along with her commands, about tying a horse off, noting that bit about the bit... Which as he thought it Rykanis thought was funny... The reasoning of it being funny beyond him. But he continued on methodically, ignoring his words, making sure to do as she said and only tie it to the halter... He could imagine having ones tongue ripped out... He imagined it would be unpleasant.

Rykanis slowly did the knots, weaving and tying them to do the same as her... Noting the bit about being able to pull it loose quickly. He supposed she was right, there could come a time when he had to quickly leave with his horse, so a quick untie was important... Though he supposed it could also cause trouble if the horse decided to leave, or if someone tried to take it...

Looking back at the Konti, he brought his hand over to rub down the length of its nose, a motion which his main side had been urging him to do, though he was not sure why he wanted him to do so... But he did it, since his main side had been good and had not been interrupting to much, or bothering him annoyingly. As the horse seemed to enjoy the feeling of him doing so a bit, he assumed that was why he had told him to do it... He simply noted the fact for later.

"So, you said next was grooming and caring for the hooves? What exactly does that entail?"

Rykanis did not push to try and take control again, as he might have at times, seeing what was before him. His other sides question had simply reminded him that more boring stuff was ahead, which was exactly as he had planned it, manipulating his main side without him even noticing, by a few simple words.

Kavala wasn't sure what to think of him. He didn't seem to smile and certainly didn't seem to have any sort of expression at all. What was he thinking? Feeling? Anything? Was a horse going to be a companion for him or just another tool?

Kavala smiled. "You did well with the halter. We use halters to lead and tie a horse up with. All sorts of training happens in a halter. It's all for groundwork or work you do without being in the saddle." She said, leading him through the rest of the excessive.

Once they had Sivak tied up, Kavala jogged across the arena to retrieve a bucket. It was a small thing with a bail that had a few brushes and a odd looking hoof pick in it. Akalaks were no nonsense, so Kavala decided she'd better approach grooming from the attitude of practicality. "We don't usually groom horses for vanity reasons. You groom them to remove parasites and to keep their coats clean. You don't want debris on their fur under your saddle to rub them raw while you ride. Its the same with their feet. You need to keep their hooves cleaned out in order to keep stones from making them go lame. I'll show you feet work first." She said, stepping up.

Holding the hoof pick carefully so Rykanis could see how she used the tool, Kavala ran her hand down Sivak's leg, squeezed behind his ankle and said firmly "Pick it up." Her Tukant was rough, but he could understand her even with the pavi flavoring her speech.

Kavala smiled, balanced Sivak's massive hoof on her knee, and expertly cleaned it out, scraping it with the hook pick and dislodging any debris or rocks stuck in it.

Then she gently set it down, guiding it all the way to the ground. "You don't want to just let go of their feet. Help them set it down. I've seen horses crack hooves because they were relaxed and someone dropped them." She added, moving thoughtfully around and handing Rykanis the hookpick. "Go on, do the other three. The back ones are a bit harder to bend up, but he'll let you." She added.

When he was done with that, she pulled out three brushes. She held them out, explaining their uses to him as she did so. "This is a dandy brush. You use it first to remove the dry mud and muck caked on them at times. It's bigger and stiffer than most brushes, so be sure to only use it on the body and neck of the horse. Horses have really sensitive faces and legs so we use this softer face brush on those areas." Kavala said, holding out the second brush. It was a smaller delicate thing that had very soft bristles. "The third brush we have is a body brush. It's normally used second or third and is really good at taking grease and dust from a horse's coat. You can use it on the head and neck and legs too." Kavala said helpfully.

"When you groom, groom with the way the hair grows, not against. Horses have really sensitive skin. They can feel a fly land on them through the warmth of their coat So you need to keep that in mind when you're grooming. Start with the Dandy brush, get all that dirt gone.... then hit Sivak with the body brush. Then use the face brush to clean up." She added as she gave him a quick demonstration and then backed up to let him do the work.

"I also put a mane and tail comb in there. You can use it to untangle both." She said, leaning back and letting him get to work.

Ride With The Winds

Postby Rykanis Dakshata on November 10th, 2012, 3:51 pm

The sudden change in the way Rykanis was acting was clearly noticeable to Kavala. It would likely even be noticeable to someone who was not to observant. And this Konti certainly was.

There was just to much of a difference between the two. And while the first one had been very nice and open, and friendly, as he was to all, this second one was the opposite almost, in his neutrality and to the point nature. He just did not get the frivolities that so many other people participated in, even his main side. But he factored them in with his plannings, and the way he reacted, when he needed to.

He nodded in recognition of what she said, noting it... Halters for groundwork... For leading and tying up... Not for riding... He supposed that would be helpful for a packhorse, or just leading it through town or such or some thing were you did not ride it... But certainly not as important as actually riding it.

But he could already tell his main side was excited about the prospect of that. Rykanis wanted to be the one to actually ride, even if he was not the best suited for it. He once again was willing to let his other side, him, do all the training and repetitive grunt work, while he got to do the final part which was usually most important. But he would let him. No point in arguing or fighting over it, as he would literally be along for the ride.

As Kavala launched into the next bit of the lesson, he turned from Rykanis muttering, to listen to what she said. It made perfect since, and was very practical.

"Of course, I see... You would not want them getting injured or sick, that would not be good."

Rykanis went over to the hose as directed, and took the hoof pick. He brought his hand down to the inside of its ankle like she had, and squeezed, saying "Up" in a single strong bit of Tukant.

Then it was simple enough to guide its foot up, and clean out the under-bits were it stood, using the pick. Once he had cleaned it out, he slowly lowered it back down to the ground, settling it down. Once more he had done it much slower than Kavala, but had done it decently well.

He moved over and did the next to hind legs one by one. She was right, they were a bit trickier. He had to lift a bit more, and command it twice to lift up its foot before it did. But he supposed he could handle a horses leg, as long as it did not turn violent. This one certainly did not seem so. As he lowered the last foot back down carefully, he turned back to Kavala, who was ready for the next bit.

He memorized the names of them... Dandy for initial big stuff, face for face, and body for overall coat... First the dandy for big, then the face for face, and finally finish off with the body one to get the last bit of grime.

He muttered out loud as he took the first big brush the dandy one, looking at the horse. "So, go with the grain of its coat, not against... Use the dandy first, then the face since you cant do the face with the dandy, and also for the legs, and finally finish with the body one overall to get the last bit."

He used the body brush, rubbing it along in big strokes, making sure to do as she said and go with the grain of the horses coat.Honestly it was not to dirty, but it still needed to be done. He had a big dollop of dried mud on the right side, which he got out with a few strokes, and then moved on to the rest of the body which was not as bad. He was careful though at this point to steer clear of the face and legs as he had been told to.

Moving on from the dandy to the face, he brushed one hand done the nose of the horse, as Rykanis was demanding he do. He still was not sure why. Then he headed for the legs, using the smaller lighter brush to get the little legs clean. Or at least little compared to the big torso of the horse. He brushed it along the leg one by one, taking great care with each and doing it slowly but methodically.

He had a bit of trouble when he got to the joints, but after a few strokes figured that out a bit, as long as he was careful. He kept on repeating till all four legs were done, and then headed for the head of the horse. There he was careful to not get it in the eyes, brushing it down the length of its face and nose, and going along underside for its chin of sorts. Along on the sides getting its lips, and then the other side... Then finishing up with the ears and a final once over.

Then the body brush. By now he had gotten the vast majority of the dirt and detritus, only a fine layer of dirt or dust in a few places. He did a once over its entire body, starting at the face, then going over the torso and body... And finally working his way down to its legs...

Done with that, he took the brushes for its hair, and worked on the tail and mane as directed. It seemed pretty simple, just like brushing a persons hair. He recalled brushing his mothers hair back when she had still been alive, and this was just like it...

However the sudden memory was not as clinical or relevant for Rykanis, who had not been expecting a sudden reminder of his dead mother... A hollow pit seemed to have formed in the pit of his stomach, and there seemed to be a leaf or something caught in his throat... While it did not seem to bother or affect his other side, Rykanis surely was by the sudden reminder... Luckily he was not in control right now, or he would have been hard pressed to hide it... He was not good at hiding his emotions, whether happy or sad.

Finally finished with the combing, he reminded Rykanis that it was time to ride finally, and that he was going to get to ride. That seemed to assuage him a small bit, though not totally.

"So... Wasn't next riding?"

Kavala smiled softly at the Akalak. He was switching personas on her, she knew it, even though it wasn't so obvious to the outsider. "Next is tack, then emergency dismounts. Once you've mastered those, we'll get you going on your riding. Don't rush it. All this foundation knowledge will come in handy in the end." Kavala assured him, then went to fetch a bridle and a heavy weight saddle big enough for the Akalak and Sivak both.

"The first piece you need to know is the saddle blanket. Place it high on the horse's neck and then slide it back down into place on his back."
She demonstrated. "You do this so that you make sure all his fur is slide the direction it grows and not rubbed backwards where it will hurt him when your rear is in the saddle." She said, then handed him the saddle pad to place on. "High on his neck, then slide it back down to his back into place. Good." At that she then picked up the saddle, showed him how the stirrups were all stowed on top across its back along with the girth and then carefully set it in place.

She then went about tightening its girth, adjusting the stirrups, and afixing the breast collar in place. Then she removed it all and handled the saddle to him, letting him attempt to try it.

When he was done and had that down, she moved on to the bridle. She slipped the bit between Sivaks teeth, pulled the crownpiece up over his head, and then fastened the chin latch. She left the halter on the whole time. When she was done with that, she carefully took it off, showed him how to get Sivak to lower his head once more and asked him to bridle the stallion up.

  • Kavala is a Konti but was raised in the Drykas culture so her accent is entirely Pavi though she can speak Common, Pavi, and Tukant well. She's only conversational in Kontinese.

Additional Notes :
Once again, a shame this didn't come to a conclusion, since you were just getting to the fun stuff. Kavala, no critique here, you obviously know a lot about horses and you imparted the lessons well. Rykanis, shame you vanished, but you seemed to be calmly processing what was taught to you, which was smart.
