The Bridge of the Dead The people of Nyka die as symbolically as they lived. Farmers are buried in the fields, while traders and fishermen are set on the sea; artists store their ashes in self-crafted urns and merchants hope to have theirs spread on profitable streets. Many have their bodies or ashes sent to the Aperture, back into the belly of the city which had borne and nourished them. Once, there was no official graveyard in Nyka, but then there was built a center of mourning. The Bridge of the Dead is a place to commune with lost loved ones, wherever they might be laid to rest. The old North-Celestial bridge collapsed in the Djed Storm of 512, some say beneath the weight of the city’s grief. The construction of its replacement began on the fourth day of Spring, using salvaged pieces of stone from every quarter’s destruction. As soon as it was ready for crossing, the people had already taken to calling it the Bridge of the Dead, after those who had died and disappeared at the mercy of the chaos. They use it as a place to mourn, to spread the ashes of the newly passed and to light a candle for the long dead. As the power of grief and death infused into the very stone of the bridge, it became a frequent haunt for those who would meditate on the dead, past lives, and the cycle of the world. Some say ghosts congregate here and would call it cursed for this reason, but all know of its story as a symbol of recovery and rebirth. This location is only available for play after 32 Spring, 512. |
