Braving the Bonesnapper [solo]

    Spring, Day 30, 512AV
    Mathew’s Bay, Zeltiva
    Time: Dawn

It was just beginning to dawn in Zeltiva when Tallis made his way down to the edge of Mathew’s Bay. Usually, the morning air served to remind sentient life that winter had only recently passed, however the winds that Tallis felt were noticeably more frigid. This came as no surprise to Tallis since he deliberately chose to stand in the path of the Bonesnapper.

Tallis had come out here to practice his Reimancy. The location was, in Tallis’ mind, absolutely perfect. It was completely private since no sane person would deliberately walk into the Bonesnapper. It was only thanks to Zulrav’s blessing that Tallis managed to stand there himself, and even then he shivered with a thick winter cloak wrapped around him. Since Tallis could create air and use it to mimic wind, the Bonesnapper was THE wind to emulate.

Taking a few steps forward, Tallis slightly bent his knees, bracing himself against the fierce winds. Closing his eyes and blocking out any thoughts of discomfort, Tallis began producing a steady stream of res. The magical substance accumulated at his sternum and was then channeled down the length of his body, through his legs, and into the ground beneath his feet. Once a pool of res had accumulated in the ground below him, Tallis began transmuting the res into earth. He pulled what substances he could from the earth, surrounding the res with sand, silt, and stone. Finally, holding his hands out slightly in front of him, Tallis began pulling his res up from underneath him.

A small mound formed at Tallis’ feet and began growing in size. Tallis took his time with this step because he needed the structure to be strong enough to withstand several blows. Slowly but surely the mound grew into a column which Tallis spent several minutes solidifying. He pulled as much stone as he could from the ground, strengthening the base of the column. On top of this stone base, Tallis packed the sand and silt down, pressuring and compressing his earthen res until the structure was as solid as a brick.

Taking a step back, Tallis surveyed his creation. He had crafted a perfect cylinder, a little over five feet in height and made of densely packed earth. After giving the structure several strong kicks and slaps, Tallis nodded his approval. His dummy had been created. Now all he needed to do was to put it into action. But first, breakfast. The use of reimancy had drained him physically, mentally, and magically. He needed the time to recoup.

Braving the Bonesnapper [solo]

Postby Tallis on May 10th, 2012, 8:06 am

Fed and refreshed, Tallis made his way back to his pillar. Standing in the midst of the Bonesnapper, the meal that had kept him warm until now had become decidedly less helpful, but Tallis could see the sun climbing higher into the sky and the sight comforted him and gave him new strength. Forcing himself to ignore the cold, Tallis set to work on the next step of his plan.

Taking up a stance at a good distance away from the pillar, Tallis released a thread of smoky white Res from his left hand and began coiling the magical substance into a flat cylindrical shape. When the cylinder grew to have a diameter about as long as Tallis’ arm and a width about as large as his hand, he stopped increasing its size and started packing his Res in, filling the cylinder until it was dense with magical energy. As Tallis worked, the pool of Djed quickly changed from an opaque fog-like cloud to a thick, milk-white substance. Tallis transmuted the dense circle of Res into air and the cylinder quickly reverted to its original smoky white color.

What Tallis held was a cylinder of densely packed air held together by a thin cylindrical frame of res. Tallis had previously used his control of air to create a layer of still air that resisted vibration and rendered all sounds silent. However, this was on another level. Tallis intended to create air dense enough to support his own weight. If he succeeded, he would literally be walking on air.

Holding the cylinder of air in place with his thread of Res, Tallis took his first tentative step, placing his right foot upon the almost invisible cylinder. Cautiously placing his weight onto his foot, Tallis felt the cylinder slowly bend down, but a few inches from the ground Tallis met with resistance. The dense package of air was supporting parts of his weight and actually keeping it off the ground!

Feeding more Res into the cylinder through the thread, Tallis further increased the density of the block of air. At this point, Tallis had to use his right hand to connect a second thread of Res to the cylinder. He could feel the air violently fighting against its Res container and it took all of Tallis’ control to keep it trapped. Quickly pulling his left foot off the ground and onto the magical platform, Tallis was overjoyed to see that he was now standing free from the ground. True, it was less than a hand-span off the ground, but it was a start.

Tallis carefully began changing the shape of the circle. Pulling it into an oval and slowly pinching it together, Tallis pushed the round cylinder into a figure eight shape and after a few minutes of heavy concentration, he finally managed to pull the one large cylinder into two smaller ones. Resting one foot on each cylinder and holding them in place with a thread of Res from each hand, Tallis stood proudly on his magical stilts.

Braving the Bonesnapper [solo]

Postby Tallis on May 10th, 2012, 8:34 am

Proving that he could stand still on top of his platforms, Tallis’ next move would be to move them. Staring ahead at the earthen pillar he had created earlier that morning, Tallis began walking. It was a mixture of a balancing act and a shuffle. Tallis took his right foot off of the right platform, putting all his weight onto the left platform. He pulled the right platform forwards and up, all the while hovering above it with his right foot. A tiny step forward and he brought his right foot back onto the platform. Tallis repeated the process with his left foot and the left platform. This was actually working. Tallis was walking on air.

It was after four steps and hovering about a foot off the ground that Tallis made a big adjustment. So far he had been controlling the left platform with his left hand and had been moving his left foot along with the left platform. Moving the entire left side of his body and then moving the entire right side felt completely unnatural and Tallis realized that this system would only work at the snail’s pace he was travelling at now. Jumping down from the platforms, Tallis crossed the two threads of Res, putting the left platform on the right side and the right platform on the left side. Now when he walked in mid-air, he moved his legs with the opposite arms, mimicking his natural land walking gait.

Starting from the beginning, Tallis managed to travel an easier seven steps when a particularly large gust of wind from the Bonesnapper pushed him off of his platforms. The shock of falling had caused Tallis to lose concentration on the Res cylinders containing the dense air and the platforms were quickly shrinking in size. Stumbling back onto his feet, Tallis quickly pulled on his reserves of inner Djed to stabilize his constructs. The thread of Res was expanded into a pipe of Res and Tallis quickly managed to fix the platforms.

Readjusting his cloak and wrapping himself up warmly, Tallis got back on top of his platforms, this time with more confidence than before. Tilting the platforms and his body against the Bonesnapper, Tallis managed to push forwards. And upwards. The last few steps drained Tallis. His body was shaking and it was becoming harder and harder for him to control his platforms. Tallis couldn’t be sure whether this was due to the intense cold of the Bonesnapper or due to over-giving, but he was willing to put his money on the latter. It was a terrifying and tiresome twenty-three steps that finally brought Tallis to the top of his pillar.

With a sigh of relief, Tallis released the threads of Res and allowed the densely packed air to dissipate. Sitting atop his pillar, Tallis took a moment to rest from the physical, mental, and magical exhaustion of his recent activities. It was not that Tallis questioned why he even thought of pushing himself by training in the Bonesnapper. Now the only thought on his mind was rushing home and curling up by a warm fire.

Taking two shuddering breaths and steadying himself, Tallis jumped down from the pillar, landing more heavily on the ground than he usually would have. Overgiving caused Tallis’ mouth to fill with a metallic taste and caused his hands to shake, but these consequences were minimal compared to what Tallis had achieved today. As he wound his way back home, he couldn’t help thinking that someday soon he would be walking over the trees, and then the mountains, and eventually across oceans and among clouds. Perhaps his grand imaginations were due to over-giving, but all dreams have a root in the subconscious, and deep down, Tallis truly believed he would one day soar above the rest.

Tallis's Loot :
Tallis

Skill XP Reward
Reimancy +3

Lore:
The Bonesnapper
Short and simple, but a +3 seems fitting since it was all focused on reimancy. Good job being detailed about Tallis's practice on the skill. :) Also, I don't believe your ideas are "far-fetched"... "creative" would be a much better term. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to PM me!
