[Thunder Bay] The Processing Center

The Processing Center is where the eagles and endal drop off their catch, and the chiet and dek process them. The functionality of the Processing Center is highly seasonal; activity is limited strongly from late spring to early autumn. This area is the hub of the Thunder Bay branch of food intake, absolutely essential to the livelihood of the coastal settlement and the provisions for Mt Skyinarta during the colder months. The eagles and their endals fly through the highest window, drop their catch in the specified area, and sweep through the long processing hall and out again. Below, the dek process the meat, curing it in the sun, and preserving it with salt, overseen by a few chiet in charge of the operation. What food is caught by boat in the bay is hauled over from the docks by Dek and Yasi in training.

Fish, crustaceans, bivalves, sea mammals, and sea birds make up the bulk of food brought in. This is solely a work area and outsiders are not permitted entry unless they are assigned to work here. Hardiness, perseverance and pure physical strength is required to work in the processing center because of several safety hazards. Many of the fish brought in are either poisonous, have acidic scales when merely touched, are vastly heavy, or have extremely sharp fins.

The Wind Eagles are mainly counted on to bring in the larger catches like orca and other types of whales and sea creatures weighing in heavily. These hunts provide the bulk of food for Inarta daily. If the Endals don’t hunt, the Inarta starve. Because there is so much to be processed in a single load, the slow and the stupid don’t live long enough to work another day at this location.

The bulk of processing and work at the Center draws to a halt during the winter months, when Mt Skyinarta is closed off due to snow and harsh weather. A skeleton crew is kept on hand for intake of Endal hunting during the winter months, enough to cure the basest, most necessary supplies. It’s not easy to bring in a large catch from the rough oceans of Thunder Bay to the highly mountainous terrain of Wind Reach. Although working here is one of the toughest, most dangerous jobs in Thunder Bay, the people are proud of their hearty nature and exceptionally strong worth ethic.

The structure was extensively damaged during the Djed Storm of 512AV. The roof was partially caved in. The Wind Eagles now fly in through the hole on the westernmost side, and the roof has been patched up with wooden beams, but a full restructuring has not yet taken place. Nevertheless, the Processing Center remains fully functional, if a little dusty.

Image Haryd

Born a Chiet of Wind Reach more than sixty years ago, no one quite knows exactly how old Haryd is. He has long ignored any of the negative social implications of being a Chiet, choosing to stay working in Thunder Bay even through Winter, when only the hardiest remain.

Haryd was born in Wind Reach to a less than glorified Dek and Avora. His Avora father swiftly forgot about him, his satisfaction gained, and Haryd was whisked off to the nurseries to be raised by hardworking Chiet. As a member of the Yasi, Haryd was never adept at shooting, glassblowing, falconry: any of the skills that were thought to make an Inartan Inartan. It was only his pure physical strength and his strong work ethic that saved him from the Drudges. The previous Chiet in charge of the Processing Center had wandered up to Wind Reach in search of a strong lad to learn the ropes, and as such, Haryd was saved from becoming a Dek.

However, Haryd will not talk of his background. It is not that he has anything to hide: simply, he considers it unremarkable. He is silent, a hard task master, always looming in the shadows and making sure the Dek are kept in line, doing their job. He will not hesitate to raise a hand against those acting up, or inflict a more serious punishment. He very rarely talks, but when he does, it is slow and methodical, as if each word is using up a reservoir inside of him.
