The Forward Camps

Used for years by Endal and their Wind Eagles, these camps give the hunters a place to rest and recoup on long hunting trips.

The vast mountain range of Kalea is home of secret valleys, dead-end canyons, and passes that lead to places long forgotten or yet to be discovered.

Description:

Over the years and hundreds upon hundreds of hunting trips and parties, the Endal of Wind Reach have, over time, organized for themselves small campsites through out The Unforgiving. Ranging out from Mount Skyinarta like spokes from a wheel, these camps have been set up adjacent to lush meadows, fields, and other heavily populated game areas.

Simplistic in nature, like everything else in Wind Reach, the Forward Camps are hard to spot from not only the ground but the sky; one must know where the camp is in order to find it. Used as way stations for Endal who intend to hunt deep within the Unforgiving, the camps serve as a quick come-and-go place to bunk down for the night and leave early with minimal work. Also used as long term camping spots, each site has more than meets the eye.

Each camp consists of a small hut made out of fallen logs, braches and other pieces of wood, moss and shrubbery. Conical in shape, the huts are easily built and repaired, needing little to no rope or mortar to hold them together. The use of natural materials also helps the huts blend in with the surrounding. Each Camp has between two and six huts, each holding up to three people inside.

In addition to the hut, each camp has a Cache. Dug into the ground with the intention of storing gear as well as the carcasses of their kills, the Caches are designed to keep the meat fresh, clean, and away from scavengers. Each hole is lined with stone, specially placed there by the cities Reminancers to keep out the bugs and increase cleanliness, while huge sheets of canvas are stored within in which to wrap the kills.

Covering each Cache is an ingenious device created by the Endal over the years. Since all manner of creatures inhabit the forests of the Unforgiving, the Inartans had to play to their strengths in order to keep their food away from nosy wildlife. Trunks of felled trees were taken and lashed together, a long length of rope tied to the left and right outside log on each end of the raft-like creation. Attaching a thick steel pole to the ropes makes a durable handle on each end- one that is sorely needed if the Endal expect to be able to access the Cache. This is because once the “raft” was originally placed over the Cache’s opening, a massive boulder was set on top to hold it in place. Only a pair of Wind Eagles, each grasping the same steel handle, is strong enough to slide the wood and stone contraption aside and allow access to what is beneath.

Small, weatherproof lockboxes can be found within each hut containing emergency rations, dried meats, flint, tinder and a waterproof covering. A designated fire pit and a single cooking pot are found at each location.
