While Sylira is by far the most civilized region of Mizahar, countless surprises and encounters await the traveler in its rural wilderness. Called the Wildlands, Syliran's wilderness is comprised of gradual rolling hills in the south that become deep wilderness in the north. Ruins abound throughout the wildlands, and only the well-marked roads are safe.

Throwing the firewood into the bushes didn't accomplish anything, but the howls continued, and seemed to be closing in. They were coming from all directions, seeming to echo back and forth throughout the area. Snarls and growls sounded from the trees around them, and finally, the first of the beasts jumped out.
To say it was a wolf was a stretch, perhaps it once had been, but it certainly was no longer. The beast had two heads, canine in shape, though they were missing ears or fur, and were covered in mangy flesh. Drool dripped from lipless mouths that revealed deadly sharp canines and rows of pointed teeth. The rest of the body was also furless, the tail long and rat-like, and it was covered in scaly patches of dried skin that looked almost like dried blood.
Four yellow eyes narrowed as they focused on their prey, Jeram, the apparent alpha of the group. The wolf-thing stalked forward slowly, it's heads snarling angrily, salivating at the thought of tearing into the human's flesh. It's paws, ragged claws flexing with each step, dug into the ground giving away its intentions just before it lunged forward, growling furiously, and tried to grab whatever extremity seemed most vulnerable.
Another pair of the wolf monsters appeared, one of them focused on Rezren, though the other was undecided and began to circle the duo slowly. Rezren's wolf wasn't quite as big as Jeram's, but it was wiry and looked desperate for food. Regardless of its size, desperation was a powerful and dangerous motivator, and the wolf-thing wasted no time launching its hungry assault on young man.
Both combatants would be hard pressed fighting just one of the beasts, but they also had to watch out for the third that had yet to attack. Rhakash was nowhere to be found, perhaps he had run away at the first sign of danger, or perhaps he had already fallen to one of the beasts, but whoever the third wolf decided to attack, they would be in a serious situation. The quicker they dispatched their current foes, the better. |

The situation was dire. More and more of the beasts continued to pour out of the forest, and it seemed as if all hope was lost. The small group had few choices left. There was nowhere to run, so that was no longer an option, which meant they could either stand and fight to the death or hole up in the shed as like the three dead men inside. Neither option was preferable, and death by starvation would be far slower and more miserable than to be killed in battle.
Luckily, though, all was not lost. The three men were not the only scouts in the forest, and a much larger patrol of Ebonstryfe happened to be in the area. When they heard the howls they decided to investigate the situation. Howling wolves often meant they were hunting something, and if what they were hunting was human, it could prove valuable to the Ebonstryfe. So, when all seemed lost, it was then that the patrol burst onto the scene recognizing their own and joining the fray to help them. The wolf monsters were soon driven off, and Rezren, Rhakash, and Jeram were saved. The patrol helped them bring back what supplies they could salvage, as well as one of the dead wolf creatures for examination, and all was well once more. The following morning the army moved on, leaving the scene of the battle far behind.
