Wilderness Survival

Postby Jeremiah Maccabee on August 10th, 2012, 2:02 am

A few wilderness survival questions:

1. Since I have traded a house for a tent and horse, my assumption is that I will live outdoors for the most part. But the amount of time I can spend away from civilization is limited by my Wilderness Survival skill. Would it be valid to make camp on the outskirts of a city and considered that a return to civilization? Or will I have to periodically enter the city and rent a room for the night. I'm okay either way. Just want to know my options.

2. Would a wolf Kelvic be subject to the same Wilderness Survival limitations as a non-Kelvic?

3. Can I assume there are roads connecting the cities? For example, Nyka to Ravok to Sunberth. And that travel along roads is relatively safe.

Thanks for the help.

1. No one is stopping you from camping inside the city in your tent. The citizens may just laugh. Or, depending on the city and their disposition, the guards may throw you out for not patronizing their establishments.

2. As a wolf kelvic, I think Hunting determines how you get your food in the wilds. How you find shelter/escape predators/avoid dangerous fauna and/or flora will depend on your Wilderness Survival skill.

3. As far as I know, the Kabrin road and the road between Syliras and Zeltiva are the safest, as these are patrolled by the Syliran Knights. Roads between other cities, if they even exist, not so much. The Storytellers in the Sylira region should be able to tell you more.

Also, please note if you are starting with Wilderness Survival as a skill, you also need to start with: Lore: Wilderness Survival Techniques.

Notice: I will not be available for modding in the foreseeable future until I've cleared up my backlog of Miz stuff (PC and ST-wise). Hopefully, it's a temporary thing, but we'll see. I will still grade your threads, however.

I don't know about other cities, but there are actually no roads leading to or from Ravok. It's all game trails and the occasional footpath worn in by travelers. Ravok is actually pretty difficult to find.

Wilderness Survival

Thanks both of you.

All I'm trying to figure out right now is how to get from Nyka to Ravok. If there are no roads to Ravok, one has to wonder how anybody gets there from anywhere else. I figure it's a month's travel from Nyka to Ravok on foot. Maybe three weeks on horseback. So unless someone is an expert in Wilderness Survival, I don't see how he could reach the city. Maybe a caravan? Would a party of two or three be able to do it, assuming strength in numbers? Am I totally over-thinking this :)?

Caravans are the only logical way to get to the city. There are enough dirt paths that you can get there if you know the way, but there are no official roads. Usually once you get close enough the Ebonstryfe will find you and escort you the rest of the way, or at least point you in the right direction. Ravok does not do a whole lot of trade, it is very self sufficient. They mostly eat fish from the lake, and most of their vegetables come from in and around the lake as well. Hunters bring in other stuff from the wilderness, but its usually more expensive and the common citizen survives on fish. 3 people could make it to Ravok, but the Syliran wilderness is dangerous and nobody's safety is ever guaranteed.

Truly though, most people just do not travel in Mizahar. You are born in a city, you live there, and you die there. PCs travel, but that is because they are generally above the common rabble. The average Mizaharian has never left the city he/she was born in, and knows very little about the outside world.
